he weather is getting slightly warmer and Spring is finally on it’s way. So sit down, maybe even in the garden, relax and submerge yourself into this month’s issue…

It’s been an incredibly busy month at SCENE HQ with the team working hard to deliver March’s issue. This month we were invited to the official Aston Martin re-launch party of the recently redesigned Bickley in Chislehurst. We joined the Chislehurst locals to sample the champagne fine wines and canapés that were being served. Meanwhile Founder of Churchill Car Insurance and newly appointed Chairman of Crystal Palace FC, Martin Long, lets us into his Kent home and exclusively tells us all about his successful business career. As Mother’s Day is fast approaching (3rd April don’t forget!) we look at some of the more unusual and fun things to spoil your Mother with this year. Floral expert, Judith Richards, shares with us her latest Mother’s Day floral ideas. Looking to move home? Mart in Long A NODDING DOG MADE HIM THE MILLIONS THAT LED HIM TO BUYING HIS FAVOURITE FOOTBALL CLUB. BUT THESE DAYS MARTIN LONG PREFERS TO SPEND HIS MORNINGS AT THE KITCHEN TABLE, COLOURING IN WITH HIS CHILDREN, THAN IN THE BOARDROOMS OF THE BIGGEST INSURANCE COMPANIES. SCENE’S FRANKIE COOPER TALKS TO THE FAMILY MAN BEHIND THE INSURANCE GURU.

I

t seems fate has dealt 60-year-old self-made businessman, Martin Long, some of the best cards in the pack, from bringing an innovative insurance business plan to the table at the right moment, to buying his ‘perfect’ historical property in Kent.

“I guess I’ve just been lucky,” says the father-of-six as he smiles in admiration around his listed property, located in 25 of the greenest acres in Westerham. “I came from nothing and appreciate what I have and trust me; it was never an ambition to own Crystal Palace [Football Club]. I did it out of the love of the club, to stop it going bust. “For 45 years I’ve been sitting behind the goal at the Holmesdale Road end. These days though I spend more time in the boardroom than in the stand,” Martin says. “But I’m a fan at heart. I really have to control myself when we’re sitting in the boardroom. When we win the fan in me just wants to run around the room punching the air. I can’t help it.” 20  SCENE

Having made his millions establishing Direct Line insurance and then Churchill, Martin took a step back for an easier life in 2003. Last year he found himself back in the boardroom fighting for his lifelong passion of Palace, but he says he’s adamant to run the club with fellow co-owners Steve Parish, Stephen Browett and Jeremy Hosking, as a business. He says: “I was quite happy going along and enjoying my relaxed life. No full time job, not having to get up in the morning, have a shave, put on the tie and go into meetings all day. “The week went by quite nicely and I just decided what I wanted to do as I went along. “With Crystal Palace it’s a bit between the two. When someone buys a football club they forget about the cash forecasts and balance sheets – they’re just living the dream. “But we’re determined to run it as a business.

“With four owners rather than one we’re a safety net for one another. We’re all self-made people with the same drive I think.” Being an owner of his favourite club hasn’t taken all the fun out of the party though for Martin. “It’s very much a family affair. My weekends are full of sport, whether its golf or football and the kids love to come along to matches.” With five boys, Martin said he was amazed when his daughter, now 2, with partner of 12 years, Angie Robinson, came along. “My mother’s name was Alice, so we definitely wanted that in there and then I thought of the name Crystal Alice and wondered “could I get away with this”. The name gets a lot of interest!” And as the toddler kicks a ball around the garden with her daddy and older brother, Max, 4, they say they love the game. Laughing at their antics, Martin says: “I’m definitely a family man; I love sitting down in the mornings and colouring in with the kids before they go off.” “I bought Sweetwoods Park Golf Club to be nearer my older boys.” Martin says the Edenbridge club is a “magnet” for his older boys, Matthew, 24, Sam, 23, Adam, 21, and Joe, 15, who are from his previous marriage. “As they get older they tend to spend more time with their girlfriends and I don’t get to see them as much.” “The golf club was a magnet for them and it’s great to be able to all hit a few balls together.” Martin says he is more of a “fair-weather player”. He adds: “I’m not great at the game but whenever I play at my club I play total rubbish, I guess that’s because I’m at work technically. “ “I’m always looking to improve my business so as I’m trying to play a few holes I get distracted, looking at what can be improved, how the bunker could be better, the course flow better.” As Martin runs through the history of his life in insurance, it’s clear he’s a man with determination and drive; someone always striving to be better. He explains: “I walked out of school one Friday when I was 17 – I hated school. I got on the bus and it stopped outside Prudential and thought I’d try and get a job.” “Once I got working in insurance I thought ‘I can do this and I can do this better than some of these other people, so I worked hard. “I’ve always said never aim for the top, just look one step ahead. I made sure I could always do the next job up.” In 1984 Martin set up the first direct response car insurers, known as Direct Line, with Peter Wood. The first of its kind in the industry, Martin realised he was on to a good thing by cutting out the middle man and “going direct”. Four years later he left to form another company, which became Churchill. “It was fate – I came to the table at the right time with the cards up my sleeve that the Swiss banks wanted. It was £25 million I was asking for

SCENE 23

and they [the Swiss] had the appetite to try something new.” “I thought of the name and although the Swiss hated it, the British public loved it.” “While I was at school,” recalls Martin, “I read Churchill’s autobiography, My Early Life, and thought to myself, ‘I hate school, he hated school, and look what he achieved’. “That’s where the whole Churchill feeling came from. I just became amazed at what he achieved.” Martin chuckles as he tells me as a boss he is “quite demanding”. He says: “I would say to my employees, ‘Don’t tell me your busy – look what Churchill did, then tell me your busy’.” Martin sold the bulging Churchill insurance company to Royal Bank of Scotland in 2003, by which point it had a turnover of £2 billion, 8,500 employees and 4 million customers. But the insurance guru has never been one to do it alone. With more than two decades’ experience in the industry, some would say he has bred a generation of insurance brains with exemployees breaking off to set up rival companies including LV, Swift Cover and Admiral. Now he has a “handful of projects” including Churchill Properties and Sweetwoods Park Golf Club. “I’ve found saying ‘If you don’t want it, I’ll buy it then’, can often be a deal-clincher when doing business – there’s been a few times when I wish it hadn’t worked and I would have bought it, but that’s always the way.”

can achieve great things it really hones their mind and if there’s someone who gives the chance to strive for it then often great things will come out of it.” And his top tip in business? “Employ people who are smarter than you – use their brains to grow your company but always reward them for it.” While at Churchill, staff at the top of the food chain would do a different job for a day and so Martin could be found answering calls to insurance claimers, being a receptionist and cooking lunch in the staff canteen. “I loved it,” he says. “It’s the best way to know exactly how your company is running where it matters. One day I took a call from a woman who had an accident and as I was taking the call it was ridiculous the number of screens the operators had to navigate through.” “So afterwards I went up to IT and we changed it. It’s always about improvement and making the business as efficient as possible,” Martins explains. “Culture at Churchill was enormously powerful – as was the brand. But it’s about establishing the power – and that’s the excitement of business.” And it appears Churchill’s iconic nodding dog added to the excitement for Martin’s growing business. He recalls: “I remember one Tuesday I opened a newspaper and there were 17 adverts for different insurance companies. That was when I realised we needed an icon.”

“I’ll always say you have to treat every business plan as if you were putting your own money into it – if you wouldn’t put your money into it then why would I want to put my money in?”

“We did the usual market research groups and came up with the idea of a bulldog but the public didn’t like it, so we softened it until we developed the dog everyone knows today.”

“I have always been a people man. When people see that they

hundreds of dog-orientated gifts from customers, some of which he has still got, and it was clear the company had cracked on to an identifiable brand image. “People were calling up asking where they could get a nodding dog from so we got 10,000 of the things in and they just sold.” In 2000, Churchill also sponsored Crystal Palace FC and Martin said it was some of the best “subliminal advertising” the company ever did, with thousands of Palace fans wearing the brand strapped to their chest. Brought up in South East London, Martin has Palace blood running through his veins. He says: “We didn’t have anything when I was younger; my mother was a school cook and my father a brick layer, so I appreciate everything I have, especially the club.” “Owning the club was never an ambition but it was the most complicated business deal in my life. Fans gathered outside the boardroom, all in Palace kits, and I think that really showed the administrators what sort of a club it is.” Martin completed the deal in August last year and said although he loves being back in the business game, he enjoys a more settled life. Fine wine enthusiast Martin reveals holidays are a particular indulgence – but he has one strict rule: “If you come on holiday with me there’s one rule; hand-luggage only.” “I spent a lot of time in airports for work and so now when I go away with the family I don’t want to be in an airport a second longer than I have to. And anything you can’t fit in a small holdall you can always buy out there.” He may have houses in Barbados and Spain, but Martin said his family home with Angie, Max and Crystal Alice – which they also share with a larma, alpaca and falabella horse – is where his heart is. “In Country Life [magazine] in about 2002, I saw a ‘farm house with historic connections’ for sale and then when I looked into it further I discovered Churchill used to own it – I thought it must be fate again.” Martin bought his dream house in Westerham in a sealed bid and spent a year developing the beautiful historically property. “It’s just perfect and I couldn’t see myself anywhere else. The area is totally unspoilt, which is what I love about it. For a little place there’s just everything we want.” And Kent, he says, has got “a nice feel to it”. “I have always lived quite close to this area.” “The great thing is you’re right on the M25, Gatwick airport is 30 minutes away and there are two good train stations, so everyone is happy.” “We always eat locally – there’s no need to travel hours away for a good meal when there are such lovely restaurants and pubs here.” Surrounded by a house full of Churchill memorabilia with his daughter on one knee and energetic Max climbing around his shoulders, Martin comes back to his passion: the beautiful game. “Max is going to be a mascot for the upcoming game and it’ll be great to see the little lad walk on to the pitch.” “I love the game and come what may, I’ll always be a fan at heart.” SCENE 25

The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra pays tribute to the genius of Tchaikovsky in a concert featuring four of his most popular scores. The dramatic Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture is followed by Piano Concerto No.1, arguably the best-known of all Romantic piano concertos. The composer’s responses to battle are featured in the showpieces of the patriotic Marche Slave and the splendours of the 1812 Overture, a vivid celebration of Napoleon’s historic retreat from Moscow, complete with a colourful firework finale.

In an English country Garden The Heart of Kent has more than its fair share of the most impressive gardens in Kent, and certainly lives up to the county’s reputation as the ‘Garden of England’.

From famous gardens in their own right, such as those at Sissinghurst Castle & Gardens and Great Dixter Gardens, to smaller private gardens, such as those at Marle Place and Hole Park - the variety will delight any garden lover. National Trust properties such as Emmetts, Scotney Castle and the grounds of many of the manor houses in Kent, such Penshurst Place, Godinton House, Finchcocks and Leeds Castle, also provide some of the most stunning displays of blooms and landscapes in England.

M

other’s day is the day we get to spoil Mum rotten. If there is one day of the year you should visit a florist, it is definitely Mothers day.

Mother’s day being in spring cannot be a coincidence, it is a marriage made in heaven. A Mother’s day bouquet is the stuff that dreams are made of feminine pastel shades of pink, yellow, lilac, white and cream are the most popular for the day. Fragrant spring posies made of a delicious concoction of hyacinth, freesia and narcissi smell heavenly and look good enough to eat. Long stems of pink blossom added to the classic Mothers day bouquet of lilies and roses transform a traditional design into a contemporary one. Give a huge bunch of scented stock or phlox in one hue, simply and stylishly gift wrapped. It will melt your Mother’s heart and bring a tear to her eyes. Your Mum is unique; select the flowers you know she loves to create her signature bouquet. This is your opportunity to design a bespoke floral masterpiece that reflects her personality, evokes happy memories and perhaps includes a flower from her place of birth.

MOTHER’S DAY B looms

As an alternative to the traditional bouquet, ask your florist to create an arrangement for your Mum’s coffee or dining table. A simple design which blends well with the decor of her home is both stunning and functional.

After the long winter, your Mum may appreciate an outdoor planted container of spring bulbs and colourful primula for the patio, to introduce some much needed colour to her outdoor space. Or select a large houseplant such as anthurium, peace lily, cymbidium orchid or phalaenopsis orchid, in an unusual container. Your florist will assist with your selection of the best design to suit any scenario. A small posy of scented spring flowers, single stem vase arrangement, or a small planted arrangement of kalanchoe, cyclamen and trailing ivy is a perfect choice for those with issues of space. A silk flower arrangement works well in any environment where fresh flowers and plants are not permitted, and is a great alternative for Mums with an allergy to plants and flowers. Pre-order silk arrangements to ensure your florist can source all the flowers you require in your chosen colour scheme. For those visiting the cemetery, your florist can

Words by Judith Richards

advise on the most appropriate design. If your Mum will be receiving a lot of flowers, have them delivered in water. These can either be aqua packed, arranged in a vase (or basket), or another container of your choice. This will give her time to relax and enjoy the day without the stress of having to arrange her flowers. Even if you only buy a bunch of daffodils for the children to present to their Mother at breakfast, I urge you to visit your local florist to make this purchase. You will find a variety of all the seasonal flowers, and more. The point is, no matter how small the purchase, your florist will add value to the gift with bespoke gift wrapping. Lastly, don’t forget to order well in advance if you need to have a national or international delivery. On Mothering Sunday (3rd April) demonstrate your love, gratitude and appreciation by showering your Mum with nature’s natural abundance of plants and flowers. Maharani

Dining at the A LITTLE OVER A YEAR AFTER IT OPENED WE FIND OUT WHY MAHARANI HAS BECOME A HIT WITH THE LOCALS, RETURNING WEEK AFTER WEEK FOR A CURRY! Words & Photos by Gary Verby

I

really didn’t know what to expect when the Editor asked me to go and review Maharani, a new Indian restaurant in Sidcup. I’m generally pretty unadventurous when it comes to Indian food, tending to stick to my local and opting for a chicken tika biryani (or when I’m feeling brave, daring and down right stupid I have been known to order a phall, widely reputed to be one of the hottest forms of curry available, even hotter than the Vindaloo)! However I was delighted by what this superb unassuming Indian restaurant had to offer. It’s a simple idea: taking the Indian restaurant, modernising it, but keeping it affordable and accessible. Most of the Indian restaurants in the area seem to serve the same tandoori style dishes and despite most doing this well Maharani in Sidcup excels at offering a contemporary twist to the usual Indian meal. Having opened it’s doors just over a year ago Maharani has proved to be a massive hit with the locals. The restaurant is managed by Indian cuisine expert Rahan who is clearly passionate about serving great food and providing his customers with exceptional service. The skill of creating their dishes lie in the balancing and blending of spices, and at Maharani this is what they want to share with their customers ,the taste of real Indian food!

60  SCENE

I really liked Maharani’s modern décor: with vibrant mood lighting, abstract art, private dining booths and smart cushioned chairs help to make for a seriously stylish and comfortable dining experience. The food was really quite stunning, using an inventive combination of spices and ingredients in what might seem like familiar dishes. To start I had the mixed platter consisting of superbly cooked minted chicken, onion bhajis, shaka kebab and vegetable samosas. The dish was fresh and flavourful with a slight kick to it but the heat was not overwhelming. That was followed by Charisma Chicken: chicken breast rolled with cashew nuts accompanied with coriander, onions and a sweet tomato sauce. This was out of this world, so simple yet so delicious. Dish number two was the Lamb Kattamita: sizzling lamb in a sweet yet spicy tamarin sauce, it was cooked to perfection and had a fantastic flavour. The dishes were accompanied with saffron pilau rice and a cheese and garlic naan bread. The overall presentation of the food was fantastic and made a pleasant surprise to see some thought behind how the food sat and looked on the plate, rather than the usual bowl of curry with a bowl of rice that most Indian restaurants offer in the visuals department. Maharani was remarkably good value too and there was no difference to the prices in a normal local tandoori restaurant despite the food being in an altogether different league in terms of quality. To conclude, I thoroughly enjoyed my meal at Maharani, the food was authentic with a contemporary twist. This truly was local Indian food at it’s finest. The service was faultless and friendly and the menu was well priced. This is not an Indian restaurant where you should go for the usual, Maharani is a crown jewel in Sidcup.

The McLaren MP4-12C is revealed as the first in a range of highperformance sports cars from McLaren Automotive, the independent car division based at the McLaren Technology Centre in Woking, England. The 12C, and future models within the range, will challenge the world’s best sports cars, benefiting from the expertise and virtuosity of the McLaren Group. Twenty years of sports car design, engineering and production combined with inspirational success in Formula 1 have driven Ron Dennis, McLaren Automotive Chairman, 62  SCENE

to announce his plans for the ultimate line-up of technology-led and customer-focused performance cars for the 21st century. The rules in the sports car world are about to be re-written. Through a rich modern history, McLaren’s automotive division has already built the world’s most critically acclaimed supercar, the McLaren F1 (1993-1998) and the world’s best-selling luxury supercar, the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren (2003-2009). McLaren Automotive now looks to the future with a new range of revolutionary sports cars.

At its heart, the McLaren MP4-12C features a revolutionary carbon fibre chassis structure, the Carbon MonoCell: the first time a car in this market segment is based around such a strong and lightweight racing car engineering solution and the first time any car has ever featured a one-piece carbon fibre structure. This step change in sports car design means that the 12C introduces new standards not just in handling, ride and outright performance, but also safety, economy and practicality in an already competitive sector. Martin Whitmarsh, Team Principal of McLaren’s racing team highlighted the integral part that McLaren’s motorsport and road car experience played in developing the 12C: “McLaren has for years offered a potent mix of race car and road car technologies. This combination of McLaren’s performance heritage, and future demands on what is expected of high performance sports cars in the 21st century, gave us a headstart when we embarked on this project. The 12C, and future variants, draws on the spirit of Formula 1 and delivers realworld technological advances.” The first car from the new company, the McLaren MP4-12C, is a high performance two-seat mid-engine model in the ‘core’ sports car market segment for cars costing between £125,000 and £175,000. The 12C is pure McLaren, featuring no carryover parts from any other car, and will be produced by McLaren in the UK. It goes on sale through a dedicated, worldwide retailer network in early 2011.

The heart of the new car is the Carbon MonoCell. McLaren pioneered the use of carbon composite construction in the 1981 Formula 1 MP4/1 model and set a trend that all Formula 1 teams have followed. The company brought carbon fibre to road cars for the first time with the 1993 McLaren F1 and then built on this experience with a carbon fibre chassis and body on the SLR manufactured to the same exacting standards, but in higher volumes. So, until now, carbon chassis have remained the preserve of the most expensive exotic cars; a purchase for the super-rich where costs are driven by the complexity of carbon fibre chassis design and build. The 12C changes this by introducing the advantages of carbon composite - light weight, high strength and torsional rigidity, and longevity – to a more affordable sector through its revolutionary engineering as a one-piece moulding. Never before has a carbon fibre chassis been produced this way. The 12C MonoCell not only brings dynamic benefits, but also offers fundamental engineering opportunities that form the basis of the car’s unique character. It has been designed

to allow a much narrower structure overall which in turn contributes to a more compact car that is easier to position on the road and more rewarding to drive. Not only is the 12C unique in its class by offering carbon technology, it also has the highest specific power output as well as extraordinary power- and torque-to-weight ratios. Furthermore, the Proactive Chassis Control system offers groundbreaking handling and ride comfort while an intense focus on occupant packaging offers new levels of comfort and everyday usability. Antony Sheriff explained. “With the 12C we are redefining the relationship between performance and practicality, as well as performance and efficiency, achieving leading positions in both. We have designed this car from the inside out. We have a saying in McLaren – ‘everything for a reason’ and the 12C will surprise people in many ways.” “A clear illustration of its special qualities is in the efficiency of its power delivery. With the 12C’s power output of around 600hp and its low CO2 emissions, it delivers the highest horsepower to CO2 ratio of any car on the market today with an internal combustion engine...and that includes petrol and diesel hybrids,” Sheriff concluded. All the parts of the McLaren MP4-12C are bespoke and unique to this car. Everything from the engine

right down to the tailor-made switches and buttons is pure McLaren: nothing has come from another manufacturer’s parts bin. The 12C is powered by a bespoke McLaren ‘M838T’ 3.8 litre, V8 twin-turbo engine producing around 600bhp, driving through a McLaren seven speed Seamless Shift dual clutch gearbox (SSG). It is targeting not only new standards for power and performance in its sector, but also class-leading fuel economy and CO2 emissions; supported by McLaren’s experience of active aerodynamics to aid cooling, grip, handling and road holding. “The 12C is all about performance,” said Sheriff. “And in McLaren, we have a very broad definition of performance. We don’t just look at the traditional one-dimensional parameters like top speed, we focus equally on useable measures such as in-gear acceleration times, braking performance in all conditions, and efficiency of power delivery combined with the lowest possible fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. Sure, 12C is very fast, but it is also the most efficient, most driveable high-performance sports car in the world.”
