WELCOME
The summer issue has landed and it’s even bigger and better. When we look back and evaluate what we have achieved at Gravitas we sometimes need to pinch ourselves. The concept didn’t even exist until September 2016…and that’s when our rapid journey began. In six short, busy months we’d produced our first London-centric, luxury lifestyle magazine that has taken the region by storm and turned many heads, with its high-brand values and premium-quality aesthetics, thanks to the incredible artistic direction between our creatives and the team.
Cover
Model: Savanna Darnell Photography: adriandewey.com Make-up: Brittany Morton of BAM Beauty Nails: Graffiti Beauty, Stamford Ring: Snow Designs & Interiors, Stamford Top: Arch Label Agency, Stamford
Our vision has been incredibly well received across the region, and is clear it was a much-needed addition to the media landscape. This shows with our new partnership with Virgin Trains, which guarantees precise distribution to a key demographic that is unrivalled. These brand values are essential, particularly when your target audience are busy professionals with higher expectations than ever.
In the months since our successful sell out launch party at Maserati in Peterborough, we’ve been working even harder to make this issue even better for our valued readership, with a further 20 pages and even more creative flare within, as well as our fabulous summer-inspired cover with the stunning Savanna. In this edition, we deliver more luxury lifestyle content from the best afternoon teas and the gin revolution to botanical interiors and homes with a view, all complemented by a beauty, fashion and swimwear photo shoot that is in a league of its own. We are so proud of the incredible feedback and interest in Gravitas, and we really hope you love this summer issue as much as we do.

Commuter invitation We are pleased to announce a new strategic partnership between Virgin Trains East Coast and Gravitas Magazine. This initiative is priceless for both parties, as well as the many Gravitas clients looking to gain the attention of Peterborough’s growing commuter population. Leigh Taylor, Co-Founder of Gravitas said: “From the initial concept of this magazine, I promised I would put Gravitas directly in the hands of the regular commuters to Kings Cross. Gravitas will set the standard in quality and precise distribution providing amazing value and incentives for our clients. This is just the start for us.”
Find us alongside Virgin Trains at Peterborough station between 6-9am on Tuesday 27 June inviting commuters to join us for fizz and nibbles in Virgin Trains First Class Lounge at Kings Cross station after work between 4-7pm on Thursday 29 June. You don’t need to be a first-class traveller to join us either, just have a valid ticket to Peterborough or Stamford. Gravitas will also be exclusively available at Virgin’s First Class Lounge in Kings Cross on an ongoing basis.

It’s the end of a 90-year era for Charles Bright and just the start for the young multi-awardwinning goldsmith Matt Powell and his mother Cathy who established the jewellery business in 2008 and will continue to manage the Bourne shop. Matt, who recently won two gold and two bronze awards at the jewellery Oscars – Craft & Design Council Awards – for his superb dragonfly pendant (featured in issue I of Gravitas) said: “It’s been a long time coming and now we can finally get down to business and provide Peterborough with a unique family run service including

Bertie’s back For anyone familiar with the drive through the picturesque village of Uffington, just outside Stamford, you will be aware of the Bertie Arms, a pub dating back to 1681 with its unmistakable thatched roof, which has recently been extensively refurbished by new owners James and Katie Genever. James is a local farmer and Katie is a wellknown face in the local pub industry from her days at close by watering holes such as the Periwig in Stamford and Smiths in Bourne. The refurbishment has brought the pub back to life – it feels brighter, fresher and noticeably more welcoming. The original fires remain and work continues upstairs, which will soon become a meeting/private dining room. The pub is currently open for wet sales

Face FACTS Your face gets the most sun exposure all year round, so it’s important to look after it.
You don’t need to apply a standard sun cream to your face – you can achieve sufficient protection in your daily make-up routine by using a moisturiser, primer or foundation. The higher the SPF the longer the protection will last.
Words by Freya Pell creativecosmetics.co.uk
Moisturisers
Clinique Superdefense Daily Defense Moisturiser SPF20 £41
Origins A Perfect World Age Defense Moisturiser SPF40 £35
Elizabeth Arden Prevage Anti-Aging Moisture Cream SPF30 £120
All-day hydration for a healthy moisture barrier – this moisturiser contains antioxidants and UVA/UVB protection in a light and silky formula. Apply in the morning to your face and neck.
Help your skin to stay youthfully vibrant with this oil-free SPF40 moisturiser, containing antioxidant-rich White Tea, Eidelweiss and White Birch.
This multi-defense, intensely moisturising day cream helps to nourish the skin’s natural moisture defenses and reverse dryness. It diminishes the appearance of ageing signs and existing sun damage.

Primers bareMinerals Prep Step Mineral Shield Daily Lotion SPF50 £26
MAC Prep + Prime Face Protect Lotion SPF50 £24
Lancôme La Base Pro SPF10 £28.50
This antioxidant-enriched lotion provides a luxurious texture while meeting all of your needs to protect skin from UVA/ UVB rays. It absorbs into skin instantly and is comfortable and breathable. When worn under make-up it gives a soft-focus effect.
This primer helps to diminish the appearance of enlarged pores, fine lines and signs of tiredness. All imperfections optically fade away using light reflection. Your skin will feel supple, softer and look visibly smoothed.
This primer protects and preps your skin for a flawless make-up application in one easy step. This mineral-based sunscreen is formulated with antioxidants to help protect against environmental stressors, while UVA/UVB filters help protect against the damaging effects of the sun.
Chanel Vitalumière Aqua SPF15 £34
Diorskin Forever Fluid Foundation SPF35 £35
Foundations
MAC Studio Waterweight Foundation SPF30 £27 This virtually weightless foundation has a hydrating formula, is extraordinarily comfortable and lasts for hours. With staytrue colour and sheer-medium buildable coverage, it softly blurs imperfections like pores and fine lines with the added bonus of sun protection.
This fluid foundation awakens tired skin and its exceptionally fine, fresh and lightweight aqueous formula offers an incomparable second-skin finish.
This foundation delivers perfectly even correction and has a non-oily, melt-away texture making it feel super lightweight on your skin. Your complexion will be instantly mattified thanks to its formula, which is enriched with the Activ-Mat complex.
Another area exposed to the UV rays daily are your hands. It’s probably not an area we consider for sun protection, however it’s just as important as your face because the backs of your hands are one of the first area to show signs of ageing. So look after them also by using an SPF hand cream during the day such as Clinique Dark Spot Correcting Hand Cream SPF15 £25.

Protect your hair
Embrace your texture this season with a beachy, raw finish. I recommend Wella Eimi Ocean Spritz to give hair that grittier finish as it encourages natural movement. You simply spray it into damp or dry hair and style as usual.
During the summer hair and skin are exposed to high intensity and UV light. Add to this exposure – wind, salt or chlorine and it’s easy to see how the hair’s structure can be damaged. The result is porous hair and faded colour. In salon, we recommend, the new Solar range from System Professional as the range has been designed to protect the hair from damage through sun exposure, thanks to its ingredients including avocado oil to prevent moisture loss and UV filters that stop the absorption of radiation. Included in the range is a Hair & Body shampoo (great as a dual product to save on travel space), Hydro-Repair Conditioner, Sun Oil, Solar Cream and a Helio-Spray (a water-resistant sun protector)
Personalised code Ask your stylist for a complimentary System Professionals Energy Coding Service at your next appointment. We take the time to go through a series of questions to see how you really feel about your hair and then we’re given given a code (there’s a one in 174,000,000 possibility of you having the same as someone else making it a truly unique code). We use the code to prescribe the perfect course of treatments and products to correct any hair issues – entirely bespoke to you.
Latest at P.Kai Hair We’ve been delighted in the salon to learn that six of our team made it through to the regional finals at the Wella TrendVision competiton. It’s a hugely prestigious annual competition, so to have six entries through is amazing. We’re also pleased to announce that two of the younger members of our team have made it to the national final of the Wella Xposure competition, which is open to students working towards NVQ’s. We’re bringing that talent and eye for trendspotting straight to our clients in the salon.

Here at Zula Beauty Sanctuary we are proud to be skin care specialists.
We love to help our clients achieve healthy, beautiful skin. By using the Environ skin care range, alongside regular Environ facial treatments, the results are outstanding. Environ products contain super anti-ageing peptides which have been clinically proven to help regenerate the skin, boost collagen and elastin levels and increase moisture. These products contain optimal levels of vitamin A, meaning not only are they incredibly anti-ageing but will also balance and treat all skin conditions such as acne, pigmentation and congestion. Over time our collagen levels drop in our skin, losing our youthful, buoyant appearance, By penetrating vitamin A deeply into the skin by 4000% via the Environ machine, we can create an overall improved skin appearance, softening fine lines, balancing oil levels, tightening lax skin and refining the appearance of scarring and uneven skin texture.

If the shoe fits… There is more to choosing a running shoe than just picking a cute colour. If you thought a trainer was just a trainer, then you may never have bought running shoes and the bewildering options may have led you to give up, or buy some in your favourite colour. As there are trainers for different sports, there are also different types of trainer/running shoe for the way you run. There’s normal, over-pronation and under-pronation, which refer to the motion of the foot as it makes contact with the ground. You can find the ‘wet footprint test’ online, which will act as a guide to your foot/running type and accordingly the shoe for you. However, weight, injury and mobility can also have a bearing on what’s right for your running gait. You may also be aware that the wrong choice can cause all sorts of problems. If your foot is not being supported
Body fuel If you have committed to your training schedule, commit to fueling your body the right way too. A good nutrition plan will support your training, aid recovery and help you perform and achieve that finish line result. Whilst everyone has different needs there is a general consensus on what you should choose and how much. Your training schedule will see your energy needs increase – a lot! Running can burn 500-800 calorie per hour (depending on your pace). However, don’t use running as a free pass to eat that large pizza or extra slice of cake (or spend the next four hours sat watching TV). Keep a check on portion sizes and minimise sedentary behaviour if you are keen to lose weight.
properly, your body will not absorb shock efficiently and with up to four times your body weight going through your feet when you run this can cause an incredible amount of stress. This in turn can lead to problems not just with the feet, but the legs, knees, hips and spine – in short the whole body. So how can you find the right choice? Don’t skimp, invest in good shoes and go to a specialty running shop (not a discount chain sport or department store), where trained staff can ask you questions, watch or video you as you run and help you select a pair of shoes that offer your feet the support they need. Advance Performance stores in Cambridge and Peterborough offer free 1-2-1 video gait analysis.

How to fuel your training and maximise your performance. Words by registered dietitian Victoria Francis – victoriafrancisrd.com To avoid early fatigue (hitting the wall) and lowered immune function, choose carbohydrates for this extra energy. Muscles prefer to use carbohydrates as their fuel and the harder and longer you train the more fuel your muscles need. Choose slow release carbohydrates at meals and fast acting carbohydrates during and after longer runs to replenish glycogen stores. Aim to consume 30-60g every hour. Adding protein to your meals and snacks will support muscle synthesis, recovery and repair. As a guide aim for 20-25g per meal. Good choices include chicken, eggs, fish, beans and pulses. Distribute protein throughout the day rather than large amounts at your evening meal.
Hard training can impair your immune system for a few hours, making you more susceptible to getting run down with infections. Ensure you achieve your five portions of fruit and vegetables per day for a boost of natural anti-oxidants. Drinking fluids is necessary to replace water and electrolytes lost in sweat. Dehydration can cause your heart and lungs to work harder and affect your mental and physical performance. If your urine is darker than straw colour take on extra fluids. Water or sugar-free fluids are great for gentle, short runs, but if running for more than an hour choose an isotonic drink to hydrate and fuel your muscles. Finally, experiment with different foods before and after a run to find what and how much you can tolerate.

You’re a marked man!
Words by Jess Topping and Victoria Lill of Alwalton Hall
How to stay well groomed while leading a busy life Walking up to a skincare counter in a department store with the array of bottles and unctions can be overwhelming whether you’re a man or a woman. I recently felt out of my comfort zone, so I sought help from the team at Alwalton Hall, our stunning local beauty and wellness centre and day spa. The team has vast skincare experience and expert knowledge, so I asked them to share some insights about men’s moisturisers.
The Dependable Nivea Active Age Day Moisturiser £12.60
When it’s time to step it up a gear, this moisturiser visibly reduces wrinkles and firms due to its innovative formula enriched with Creatine and Caffeine. It moisturises for 24 hours while protecting the skin from drying out. Available from Boots.
Why moisturise? Think of the skin’s surface like the paint job on a car. If the paint is cracked, the metal underneath is left unprotected from the elements and quickly oxidizes and rusts. Protect your skin and keep it healthy by moisturising every morning and night. This is not optional – it’s essential!
The Ultimate All Rounder Decléor Soothing Aftershave Fluid £29.00
An ultra-light, fast-absorbing luxury moisturiser, which leaves your skin rested, soothed and reduces sensations of tightness. It also is enriched with Frankincense to maintain firmness, Coconut and Jojoba Oil to hydrate, and Clove to slow beard growth. Available from Alwalton Hall
37
Calm the Redness La Solution 10 De Chanel £58
Less is always more for sensitive skin types and Chanel’s revolutionary skincare cream contains just 10 ingredients, with a powerful anti-oxidant, Silver Needle Tree extract, to soothe, de-stress and protect your skin. Available from John Lewis, Queensgate
Stop the Shine Clinique Oil Control Moisturiser £25
A fast absorbing, light moisturiser – perfect for reducing excess oil while soothing any redness and irritation. It provides longlasting comfort with a matte, shine-free finish to the skin. Available from John Lewis, Queensgate
And don’t forget… Kick Start Your Day
Jess Topping of Alwalton Hall
Decléor Clean Skin Scrub £24.00
A 2-in-1 daily cleanser and scrub, suitable for everybody. Essential oil of Peppermint leaves the skin refreshed and energised, while Eucalyptus deep cleans and prevents in-growing hairs, preparing your skin for your chosen moisturiser. Use it before you moisturise and you’ll be ready for anything. Available from Alwalton Hall

Aston Martin takes to the skies
Limited edition Red Arrows Vanquish S – one of the most exclusive Aston Martin cars ever built.
Celebrating two of the most iconic marques in British history, Aston Martin Cambridge has commissioned a limited edition collection of 10 Vanquish S Red Arrows models as a unique tribute to the Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team, the Red Arrows. This exclusive limited-edition car was unveiled alongside the Red Arrows jet it emulates at the annual Aston Martin Owners Club Prestigious Spring Concourse on Sunday 9 April, at the new Aston Martin St Athan manufacturing facility in Wales. As the most extensive car collaboration honouring the nation’s national treasure and world-renowned aerobatic, the Red Arrows, the car has been designed to emulate the experience of piloting a Red Arrows Hawk jet. Approved by the Ministry of Defense and the Royal Air Force, this is one of the most exclusive Aston Martin cars ever built, with custom details throughout highlighting the prestigious iconic brands
partnership. Creating the special-edition car positively showcases UK engineering excellence, precision and innovation, which are hallmarks of both the Royal Air Force and Aston Martin.
Exquisite detailed styling The car has been painted in a special, Eclat red pearlescent colour, which is a not only the Red Arrows signature, but is a unique custom shade of red containing gold flakes. Inside, the Vanquish S Red Arrows Edition boasts specially designed features including the Diamond Nine embroidery on headrests; obsidian black with olive green inserts matching Martin Baker ejection seat fabric colours in the Red Arrows Hawk; audio on/ off system switch made from recycled Red Arrows Hawks parts; Hawk serial number embroidery on passenger airbag matching aircraft; and Red Arrows squadron crest lacquered into the screen veneer in a monochrome finish.
Giving back Red 10, the tenth car built in this series, will be donated to the Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund as a way to celebrate and honour those who have served for their country. This one-of-a-kind car will be raffled off to the public with full proceeds from the raffle going directly to the charity. As a way to pay tribute to the men and women in the Royal Air Force, Aston Martin Cambridge came up with the groundbreaking idea to gift the tenth custom car in the series to the RAF Benevolent Fund.

The Bavarian tour-de-force Motoring journalist, Tim Barnes-Clay finds out if the new 2017 BMW 5 Series – First Drive leaves Mercedes-Benz and Audi stalling in the paddocks. Tested: Estepona, Spain. For more than four decades, BMW’s 5 Series saloon has been drooled over by executives around the globe. It’s a car that still wields more status points than many – and the seventh incarnation of this Bavarian tour-de-force has shown the likes of Mercedes-Benz and Audi that the 5 Series will always be a tough cookie to beat. The new 2017 BMW 5 Series is lighter and quicker than the outgoing version – it’s also more efficient. Naturally, the car is stuffed with better tech than before and it’s also been given a boost in the comfort department. It’s a looker, too – with a conservatively handsome exterior not drastically different from the exiting model, but now a touch more like the 7 Series. The subtle changes could perhaps be perceived as unambitious by BMW, but the company has tried to make bolder shapes before and it just hasn’t worked. Coming across as a smaller 7 Series is no bad thing at all.
Inside is visually very like the outgoing 5 Series. Anyone who’s owned or driven a recent BMW will recognise the layout and positioning of the controls, but there’s now an extra focus on quality. While the last generation of 5 Series had a perfectly good interior, it had fallen behind the MercedesBenz E-Class in terms of style and overall finish - it simply didn’t feel as special. From a design point of view, some may still feel that’s the case, but at least now the quality is bang on par with its compatriot’s offerings. Technology has moved on now to the point where semi-autonomous technologies are being filtered into new cars. This new generation of 5 Series is capable of accelerating, braking, and steering around objects - perfect for long-distance motorway driving. It can also park itself without you even being in the vehicle - a system that uses BMW’s new key to operate. The technology is seriously impressive, but you must learn to trust it.
53
Pros ‘n’ Cons
The car has room for five adults, and out in the boot there’s 530-litres of load space available. This is perfect for some golf bags or a very large trip to the shopping centre, although it’s a little awkward to load comfortably because of the shape. Overall build quality feels better than ever, the 2017 BMW 5 Series is beautifully finished and the Bavarian marque has really stepped up in delivering the premium, classy feel the last 5 Series was starting to lose a little. We challenge anyone to feel disappointed with the overall finish of this new car. On the road, the new 2017 BMW 5 Series is everything you’d hope for – and more. Behind the wheel, you sit low down, and the wraparound dash and clear clocks make you feel as though you’re in a jet fighter plane. All the switchgear falls easily to hand and it operates with an effortless action. It’s agile, even though it’s longer by 36mm and 6mm broader - and the six-cylinder 265ps 530d M Sport Saloon we drove pulls like a freight train. Zero to 62mph arrives in 5.4 seconds – and when fitted with BMW’s all-wheel-drive system – xDrive, the car grips to corners like a koala bear to a Eucalyptus tree.
Turn into a twisty section of tarmac and the new BMW 5 Series replies rapidly to the precise steering, while the car’s Comfort, Sport and ECO PRO modes – each altering the throttle and steering response – will fit your mood, as well as road and weather conditions, perfectly. But, let’s face it; the new 2017 BMW 5 Series is more likely to be used as a motorway mile muncher than a sports car strung through switchbacks. We certainly had no worries cruising at 70mph up and down the Spanish test routes we were allocated. The 5 Series irons out lumps and bumps, making any road surface – even the less than mirror-smooth ones – feel brand new. Expect to pay £49,130 for the 265ps BMW 2017 530d xDrive M Sport Saloon we tested, but if you’re a business user choosing this as your company car, the new 2017 BMW 5 Series will give you those lower emissions you’ll need for reduced benefit in kind tax bills. This fresh, powerful model gives off only 138g/km of CO2 – and you’ll be pleased to hear it will return up to 53.2mpg.
The wraparound dash and clear clocks make you feel as though you’re in a jet fighter plane.

It’s a
jungle
out there
Botanicals are the latest trend to spruce up your home.
1. It’s an illusion There’s so much great choice on the high street for inexpensive home accessories, there’s never been a better time to jump on the botanical bandwagon and add interest to those lonely corners with a plant. A friendly green giant will add the illusion of more space and depth. The focus when decorating typically revolves around the wall colour and large pieces of furniture like sofas and coffee tables, but the clever placing of a tall, exotic plant will enrich your interior and become an anchor point for the rest of your accessories. 2. Botanical wallpaper There’s more to the leafy trend than just plants. Wallpaper instantly adds a luscious theme to a home. Tame the rest of the room down with minimalistic and simple decor. A monochrome and metallic palette works in complete cohesion with tropical printed wallpaper. Finish the look by adding a little rattan or bamboo.
3. Wall gallery If tropical wallpaper sounds a step too bold, there’s another option that’s just as effective – a wall gallery – easy to create and great if the budget is tight. Giant ferns, date palms and swiss cheese plant leaves are there perfect place to start for prints.

Join the AGA fan club The AGA is more than just an iconic kitchen taskmaster, it really can do everything.
Ask any AGA owner and they’ll tell you AGA food really does taste better. This is because the iconic cooker does things differently, using gentle radiant heat, which ensures all the flavour, moisture and goodness is locked in.
an AGA when cooking pastry items such as a quiche or a Bakewell tart. You can put the filling in the raw pastry and put the dish on the floor of the roasting oven, where you will get heat from underneath and around the sides to cook the pastry.
While with a conventional cooker you have to set the temperature, an AGA has ovens dedicated to different kinds of cooking. A three-oven AGA has roasting, baking and simmering ovens and a five-oven model has additional slow cooking and warming ovens.
Because the AGA is so much like a traditional bread making oven, you’re guaranteed a perfect loaf every time. It’s even good at reviving bread that’s past its best. All you need to do is sprinkle a little water over the loaf and pop it in the roasting oven for a few minutes.
This means there really is nothing an AGA cannot do. From a quick weekday stir-fry to a three-course dinner for a crowd, its large ovens and hotplates mean you’ll get amazing results every time. Baking fans love the AGA and often comment on how brilliantly it bakes cakes and bread. There’s no need to bake blind in
The AGA simmering oven does so much more than just simmer. Root vegetables can be steamed to perfection after being brought to the boil briefly on the boiling plate. Steaming will help retain their colour and nutrients. Green vegetables can be steamed on the boiling plate using a stainless steel steamer over the saucepan.
No space needed for a rice steamer – the AGA makes perfect cooked rice, with separate grains. For basmati rice, simply bring the rice and water to the boil with a little salt if required, then stir and place in the simmering oven for 15-20 minutes. For a change, add crushed coriander, chopped onion, a bay leaf and a cinnamon stick for an eastern flavour or mix with roasted vegetables for a Mediterranean vibe. If you’re interested in learning more, the AGA Shop in Oundle holds regular ‘AGA can do it all’ demonstrations, which are well-worth attending. As well as finding out exactly how the cooker works, you’ll also pick up lots of interesting cooking tips.

Stamford Fine Food Store The Stamford Fine Food Store’s afternoon tea is a less formal affair, but magnificent nonetheless; beautifully presented on miniature picnic benches, this afternoon tea is fun, colourful, and begging you to dive in. There’s a great selection of traditional and non-traditional bites – finger sandwiches, bagels, mini pork pies (from the local butcher) and chorizo scotch eggs plus meringue kisses, macarons, freshly baked scones and more. Prosecco optional.

The Olive Branch When the ‘best pub in Britain’ starting serving afternoon tea, we immediately sat up and took notice. We’re used to seeing interesting and playful dishes coming out of Sean Hope’s kitchen, so how does that translate into afternoon tea? Well, it’s traditional with Olive Branch twists – finger sandwiches sit alongside scones, clotted cream and jam, with the addition of berry Eton mess, basil sorbet and pistachio custard creams. If it’s sunny, make the most of the views of the garden by enjoying your afternoon outside on the terrace.

A family affair The hospitality industry is in the Crawford blood and they have two successful pub restaurants to prove it. A huge celebration on 16 September will mark the 20th anniversary of the Crawford ownership of The Finch’s Arms
Celia and Colin started off in the industry by sheer luck. The Peacock Inn in Redmile was their first venture, which they bought in 1987 to convert into a house. However, they realised it still had a licence so thought they give running a pub a go. The Finch’s Arms is a 19th century inn, with beautiful views over Rutland Water, and the food, like the views, is absolutely stunning. Head Chef Mark Gough has vast experience and puts his own mark on each dish ensuring the taste and presentation is a gastronomic delight. The Finches also offers the option of private dining as well as corporate events and weddings. There are 10 boutique en-suite bedrooms (four with reservoir views), all individually decorated to a high standard.
Last April the Crawford family took over The Admiral Hornblower in Oakham and transformed it into a chic contemporary eatery serving gourmet food created by Head Chef, Jennie Bowmaker, fine wines and craft ales. The two establishments complement each other so well, while retaining their individualism. Both the Finches and Hornblowers offer a superb ambiance and many personal touches as well as open fires in the winter and alfresco dining in the summer. A place where the children are welcome during the day and the parents can dress up for an evening out. Charlotte says: “Every Saturday we hold our summer BBQ with music from our resident DJ – bringing a little bit of Ibiza to Oakham. Plus we have our upcoming Mad Hatters tea party at the Hornblower, with an amazing electro swing DJ, stilt walkers and cocktails on the 22 July 3-6pm.”

The Proper Pub Company is a real family affair. The umbrella company of The Finch’s Arms, in Hambleton and The Admiral Hornblower in Oakham is owned by the Crawford family. Colin and Celia Crawford have been in hospitality for 30 years. They have recently been joined by their two children Charlotte and Jordan Crawford. Charlotte has been working in PR for the last five years and Jordan has worked in hospitality for more than 15 years.

Both venues are open 365-days a year, and have some fabulous plans for the festive season with dedicated party nights with live music and DJ events.

The men behind The Olive Branch Local lads Sean Hope and Ben Jones offer skilful, professional, taste-packed classics. Sean Hope Sean Hope, co-owner and chef of The Olive Branch pub at Clipsham, Rutland, developed a passion for food at a young age when he took a keen interest in the meals his mother prepared for the family and he began to experiment with his own recipes.
Words and pictures -Jenny Garford
Sean studied catering at Stamford College, which was then followed by training at the renowned nearby Hambleton Hall. Stints at other reputable hotels and restaurants followed and he then returned to Hambleton Hall as Second Chef, where he met up with Ben Jones and with whom he was to buy and renovate The Olive Branch pub in 1999. Sean held a Michelin Star from 2002 until 2014, and now heads up a team of young local chefs, and was recently listed in The Times Top 20 Pubs for Foodies. Sean is passionate about using local suppliers and ingredients, he now has a kitchen garden where the team grow many of the salad and vegetables for the daily changing menus.
Ben Jones Ben Jones first met Sean Hope at Hambleton Hall when he took up the position of
Restaurant Trainee after studying Hotel and Catering Management at Southfields College in Leicester. Four years later, Ben joined a top luxury hotel just outside of Paris where he spent two years gaining valuable experience, which was put to further good use when he returned to the UK to work as Restaurant Manager at the Relais & Chateaux, Gravetye Manor in East Sussex. It was during this time that he was placed 2nd in the Young Waiter of the Year Awards. Returning to Hambleton Hall for another two years as Restaurant Manager, he met up with Sean Hope again – and the seeds of the idea of buying their own pub together were first sown, but not before Ben went on to become the General Manager at Hart’s Restaurant in Nottingham that gained the coveted Newcomer of the Year award from The Guardian. Another local man like Sean, Ben was raised and educated in nearby Oakham and also like his business partner, he is passionate about supporting the local area and sourcing nearby good food and suppliers.

The of THE GIN SNOB
}
As the gin revolution shows no sign of slowing down, we speak to Stephen Miskell, Co-owner of The Stamford Wine Bar to find out about some of their favourites.
Words by Stephen Miskell and photography by Bourne Photographic Studios
}
77 Warner Edwards Rhubarb This rhubarb gin is made using a crop of rhubarb originally grown in the kitchen garden of Buckingham. The rhubarb juice is blended with Harrington Dry Gin to produce a pink gin that is both sweet and tangy on the palate. We like to pair this with ginger ale. Rhubarb and ginger… a tried and tested flavour combination.
Warner Edwards Harrington Dry Gin
Brockmans
Established in 2012, from Harrington, Northamptonshire, this dry gin is heavy on cardamom and nutmeg giving it spice while remaining smooth and refreshing. We pair it with lemon and rosemary and premium Indian tonic water. Exactly what summers are made for!
One of our most popular gins, this gives a completely new take on the classic gin and tonic we all fell in love with. Paired with orange and Mediterranean tonic water, and you have a sweeter drink bursting with tropical fruit. An excellent introduction for those who are yet to fall in love with the country’s favourite spirit, labelled as intensely smooth, this gin never fails to impress.
Botanist An interesting Scottish gin from Islay, Scotland with 22 of the botanicals used foraged from the island itself. Flavours such as cinnamon, liquorice and orange all come through on the palate. One of our favourite gins, served with lots of ice, fresh lime and premium Indian tonic water. Classic perfection!
Silent Pool
Tom Collins
A subtle and elegant gin paired with the complementary and not overpowering flavours of fresh strawberries and elderflower tonic water. Distilled in Surrey, this gin uses 24 unique botanicals and has distinct floral notes. The use of local honey gives it a perfectly smooth finish.
The Tom Collins needs no introduction – go-to for all gin lovers. This fantastically simple cocktail mixes gin (we have chosen fifty pounds gin as it works perfectly with the lemon), lemon juice, sugar syrup and soda. This recipe, first penned in 1876, has stood the test of time, and for good reason. The cocktail is thought to have taken its name from an elaborate joke known now as ‘The Great Tom Collins Hoax of 1874”.

Scott Weavers-Wright It’s in the detail
How do you think Brexit is going to affect entrepreneurship in the UK?
Would you advise business owners to have a mentor?
Is there a motivational quote that you stand by?
The businesses that you need to worry about are the businesses that are managed by managers. Entrepreneurs thrive in these types of situations. The entrepreneurs with their backs against the wall will keep trying if they initially fail. Entrepreneurs treat failure like an event. The entrepreneur failed more times than the beginner ever tried.
I think it is extraordinarily important in business to have somebody who has been and done it before, made the mistakes, seen the carnage. I think it’s imperative and if you don’t have one, I think you will struggle. Sometimes in business it is like pushing water uphill.
Failure is an event not a person.
What’s the best piece of advice you have for budding entrepreneurs out there? Cash is king. All my businesses have been designed to not giving credit because when you give credit, you become a bank and are you a bank or are you an entrepreneur? Be very clear what you are and build a business model around your strengths.
Who inspired you on your entrepreneurial journey when you were growing up? Richard Branson. On my 18th birthday, my dad’s third wife made it very clear it was time for me to go and that was a revelation for me because my “back was against the wall”. So, 100% when I started, it was Richard Branson’s inspiration that led me.
Interview by Leigh Taylor | Photography by Jenny Garford
I name my alarm clock an opportunity clock because every day is an opportunity. I may have screwed up yesterday, but I can solve today. We have bad days, but the following day, it is all yours.
I am a big fan of audio motivational books. Do you have any books or authors that you listen to regularly? A guy called Zig Ziglar. He arguably shaped my life from a motivational get up and go, get back in the game point of view. Zig has been inspirational to me.

{Q/A}
With 17 bidders, you finally sold Kiddicare to Morrisons for £70m. Tell us a bit about that? Kiddicare was the brainchild of my mother and father-in-law back in the 70s. In parallel to my IT business at the time, I started kiddicare.com. I built a simple tech platform and put Kiddicare online in 1999. I made the huge decision to give up my IT business in London and jumped into Kiddicare full-time. Over 13 years we built it to be the biggest online mother and baby business in Europe. With 85% of business being online along with our in-house programme development; it gave us a huge competitor advantage. That’s ultimately what generated such interest from the likes of Morrisons and Amazon who actually came in with a late £79m bid.
What other projects have you have going on? In 2013 my wife Elaine and I exited Morrisons and took some time out on the west coast of America. I spent that time deciding what I wanted to do. I felt I was emotionally tied to Stamford so I set up The Hub and decided to go into property and tech investment. Tall House is a property development company currently developing £14m worth of properties across the East and London although I find property insanely frustrating. Haatch is my seed investment vehicle, which has gone onto to create more than 100 jobs and returned 20 times its initial investment, with a portfolio now worth around £100m. Elevaate is the most exciting project – a simple platform that allows suppliers to
bid against each other to promote their products on their retailers’ websites. We have now received our billionth promotion. Tremendously exciting.

Are you looking to get financially focused and organised? In the last issue I covered planning for retirement – if you missed it grab my write up online at Gravitas. This issue is about investment planning. Making regular savings or investing into some form of an investment can be a struggle to get started and keep on track – the temptation is to procrastinate until it’s usually too late to make the returns needed or expected. In many cases your plans end up as unresolved and you simply miss out. There are many reasons for saving, all of which are dependent on your life stage, and access required to funds. Factors due consideration are tax, the term to lock into an investment vehicle and the level of risk and diversification on the products you are prepared to take. Our Savings and Investment solutions target the questions you need to be asking yourself in advance of an event requiring funding, and line up the tax efficiency and investment returns to match your profile and expectations.
What is your life stage and priorities? Life stages come with varying priorities and goals. Someone in their 30s will have different goals and priorities to someone in their 60s. I guess there would have been a time when you could clearly define what is likely to happen within certain age brackets, but I find it a restricted view and feel that the descriptions ‘Young Family’, ‘Pre-retirement’, and ‘Retired’ work better and are far simpler. Young family – getting started, buying your first home, with higher outgoings due to factors such as children or an alternative choice maybe pets and holidays. Pre-retirement – removing the burden of debt eg a mortgage and making the most of income in readiness for decumulation. Retirement – making the most of what you have for as long as possible in the most tax efficient and sustainable manner.
How an IFA can help? The role of an IFA is to question the current stage you’re at
and using their professional knowledge and skills outline how your financial plan looks and can look with sensible changes. Our savings and investment solutions can be tailored to your individual needs and circumstances creating a bespoke portfolio for you. A starting point is to identify your goals for the short, medium and long-term and know your net worth, which is your assets minus any liabilities. You may at this point identify that clearing liabilities is a priority, but if you’re a higher rate tax payer, investments to gain tax relief may be a solution alongside repaying liabilities. We all need an emergency fund that allows easy access and covers a minimum of three months of outgoings. This will help in an emergency, and we should all expect the unexpected and plan for this – do you have the necessary insurance plans in place to cover costs if you were to become ill, injured or even suffer an early demise? While on the subject, have you reviewed your Will and Lasting Power of Attorney? Having these in place will ensure that you are catered for and those whom you want to benefit from your estate are those that will. Then work out any disposable income and discuss how this can be best used in order to produce real returns.
What influences my investment vehicle? There are a variety of ways that disposable income can be invested, it can be regular amounts or a lump sum, maybe from the sale of an asset or an inheritance. Returns can be as an income or reinvested. Your tax position and access will play a big part in this decision immediately and in the long-term when you’re ready to withdraw. A blend of underlying investments spread over geographic areas will help to diversify the portfolio. No investment is completely risk-free, but by using an IFA who assesses risk profiles and understands your volatility and capacity for loss, this risk can be minimised. Are you looking to get financially focused and organised? Start your journey with a fee-free initial meeting with Sharon at Brooks Wealth Management.

Disaster management Thanks to Pepsi and United Airlines, businesses from all corners of the globe have witnessed a stark reminder that it’s all too easy to fall prey to PR disasters. Even worldwide corporations with budgets that allow them to feature A-List celebrities in their campaigns are not safe from public scrutiny. It’s realistic to expect that once in a while, a business, its policies or staff may commit an act that will cause them to be catapulted into the realm of the infamous – we are only human after all. It’s the way that you handle the disaster that determines whether you are going to ride out the storm. The one thing you can do to lessen the blow? Transparency. Transparency breeds trust and ultimately, lifelong brand advocates. A PR disaster of any proportion demands a public acknowledgement, an acceptance of responsibility and an authentic apology. And this message needs to be consistent across all channels. To put it in perspective, the United Airlines CEO is now on his third apology because the first two were so atrocious, they worsened the impact of the incident, along with the company’s share price. If you are ever found under an unwanted spotlight, own up and apologise to the masses, it’s the only lifeline you have. 01733 667110 amy@datify.co.uk
Have you got the right people?
The end of the tax return – not yet!
The saying goes “your business is only as strong as the employees within it”. This rings true for so many businesses today, where every sale counts and great service is the minimum expectation required by customers.
There are plans afoot to modernise the tax system, bringing it into the digital age. Does this signal the death of the tax return?
To provide a great service or product you need the right people in place at the right time with the right skills and knowledge to drive your business. Having a robust people agenda will support your business and allow your employees the opportunity to develop, use their initiative plus provide you with the framework to manage performance. With time so precious it is essential to develop your people, allowing you to work on your business strategically instead of constantly working inside it operationally. How many of you have time to check for new legislation or keep track of new case law? Recent cases including working hours, holiday payments and employment status will see huge change within workplaces over the next 12 months. You simply cannot afford to get it wrong. Working with us, takes the hassle out of HR, you get the advice and guidance that keeps your business legal and on track and feels like a natural extension of your business, for as little as £89 a month. For more information, contact Nicki Mawby at nicki@hr-yourbusinessmatters.co.uk or call 07496857688.
Making Tax Digital (MTD) has faced criticism over its short timetable, with many calling for it to be delayed. With an implementation date of 1 April 2018 for unincorporated businesses with a turnover above £85,000, businesses were beginning to plan for the requirement to submit quarterly accounts electronically to HMRC. However, in late April, clauses on MTD were dropped from the Finance Bill due to the election. The clauses will likely return. MTD plans remain controversial and need more scrutiny, and most importantly proper parliamentary debate. But the Government is keen for this initiative to continue, so readers would be wise to prepare for change. For businesses, including landlords who let out rental properties, the big change is the requirement for digital record keeping. This will involve the use of software or apps to record income and expenditure and submit information to HMRC once every three months. For individuals, the changes have already started to happen. Every person can register for a digital tax account with HMRC now. For more info speak to Ken Craig at Rawlinsons at ken.craig@rawlinsons.co.uk

Property investment Whether you’re buying, selling or just perusing the property websites with nothing more than a curious nature, keeping an eye on the property market has always been a British obsession. Investing in the property market has been increasingly popular, with buy-to-let investors remaining committed and many continuing to expand their portfolios. According to the Land Registry House Price Index, it was the East of England that saw the greatest increase in capital values in the 12 months to January 2017. Prices in our region were 9.4% up in the year. The eastern region has been the best performing region since June 2016, with London being the winner in the six months up to May 2016. So what about the future? I expect to see low interest rates that will act as a buffer to protect the economy and the housing market from any negative trends as Brexit unfolds. Over the next few years, the highest growth is likely to come from areas away from the traditional London stronghold. Rising prices have stretched borrowers to their resource limits in the capital and as a result, the East and South East will see the best growth rates. The rise of the Mumpreneurs Becoming pregnant is often referred to as life changing. You absorb as much knowledge as possible, covering apps, books, social media and attending antenatal classes all to prepare and support you to be the best parent you can be. This laying of foundation is crucial to your business success and the decisions you make will either help or hinder you on your business journey. Reflecting on my journey, the top five areas I believe you should consider when laying the foundations of your business are: • Reason why – why do you get out of bed in the morning? • Research – who is your ideal customer? • Finance – what resource do you have and realistically how much do you need? • Vision – a clear goal of where you want to be in one, two and five years? • Network – do you have the people around to support you and your journey? So have a think, what foundations are you going to lay for your business? The Unique Mumpreneur provides a variety of ways to support women considering or already on their business journey. These include monthly networking and mastermind groups, mentoring, face to face and online training. Find out more visit uniquemumpreneur.com or email Jo@theuniquemumprenuer.com

Martinis, Music and Muses Celebrity DJ Lauren Pope spins the decks for shoppers.
Hundreds of people flocked to the Queensgate Shopping Centre to enjoy complimentary Martini cocktails while watching the model and TOWIE star Lauren Pope spin the decks and create a club vibe in the city centre. As people danced on the mall, celebrity stylist and blogger, Megan Gilbride was on hand giving fashion advice on what’s hot and what’s not and model waiters handed out nibbles. Gravitas headed up the male styling area where James Benjamin and Karlo Baker, local fashion bloggers were giving the men of Peterborough some useful tips on how to piece an outfit together using some staple pieces from Queensgate retailers.

Drinking dens Bon viveur Phil Harrison continues his musings on the subject of the hippest hangouts.
I am in no doubt that our new readers’ palates have a built-in GPS finely tuned enough to seek out a sprat in a polar ice cap, but what’s the harm in a little spot of direction? However, my GPS has somewhat failed me as I’m reviewing one that’s central, one that’s yet to open, and for our new feature within a feature – Away day beanie – which for the first of this new addition is in my home town London for you train-travelling, watering hole connoisseurs. But before I start with my lyrical waxing second to only Plato! If you know of a new hidden away, or not so secret gem, that encompasses any entertainment, cocktails real ales or specialist gins et al please email leigh@gravitasmagazine.co.uk
Away day beanie Underground, and under the radar, the speakeasy spirit of the prohibition era lives on at the Megaro Bar. Sit back and immerse yourself in sultry low lighting, live jazz and great company as the mixologists craft house speciality and classic cocktails from the finest barrel aged blends. I can’t say it is easy to find, but that’s what makes the Megaro Bar a unique find. Look for the building with the top-to-toe mural and you’re in the right spot. The laid-back atmosphere here is down to welcoming staff and the jazz soundtracks playing loud enough for you to tap your feet too. Live artists do play several times a month and they have resident DJ on a Friday evening.
Creative as they come, the mixologists know their stuff. The inventive cocktails might tempt you and the intimate vibe will keep you there, note the Megaro Bar in your little black book. You might just want to check it out? 27 Euston Road, Kings Cross, London NW1 2SD megarobar.co.uk
A Thursday night at The Argo Lounge Probably not the best of nights to see The Argo Lounge at full tilt, but any night where I get to eat, drink and make merry is a great night. “Lounge” a public room in a hotel, theatre, or club in which to sit and relax, unwind, luxuriate. Sounds good to start with, doesn’t it? The Peterborough Argo Lounge is one of more than 80 lounges or Cozy Clubs (their other destination units), the first being opened in 2002 in Bristol, the venue itself is over two floors and three areas, with the downstairs being a fully tabled area, a “lounge” area and the bar. Our food was quickly delivered by a young lady on her first shift, but that said she had obviously been well trained as she knew all the dishes we chose from the tapas menu – salt and pepper squid, pork belly squares, potato bravas, beef and pork meatballs, roasted sweet potatoes. Our choice was perfect, in presentation and in taste, I really could not fault them. And I do always try to do so… on to the serious part, the drinking; its cocktail list has 11 mixes on it and of those 11, four you would expect to see on most basic lists, however with others such as Cherry Bakewell, Rosie’s Tea Party, American Smash, Prosecco & Passion Fruit Martini there is some great alternatives.
97
But, the Argo did have one minor problems to report; they had run out of wine “on a Thursday?” Overall the experience was a good one, but with a new and another operator, Turtle Bay, coming to town in late June, The Argo will have stiff competition for the Lounge Reptile.
Argo Lounge 7 Bridge Street, Peterborough PE1 1EH 01733 565255 thelounges.co.uk
And that’s where we go next… Turtle Bay is set to open its doors to Peterborough on 25 June, bringing a new, vibrant, Caribbean dining and drinking experience to the city for the first time, which will include, I believe, entertainment as well. The 180-seater restaurant will be located in the Queensgate Shopping Centre, Peterborough.
And as well as serving up blissful Caribbean food, the venue will also feature a stunning cocktail menu, which as you would expect is rum-biased and a collection that includes no less than 40 different varieties. The rum range takes in the full breadth of the Caribbean – from Mount Gay’s Bajan to Appleton Estate’s Jamaican rum, and everything in between, all at the same price! The resulting cocktail list is therefore as cool and credible as you’d expect from a culture that brought us Bob Marley. You can be sure Turtle Bay will add another level of bar cocktail culture to this everexpanding diverse city, and a step up by all maybe needed to follow? So, until September all you drink and foodie miesters enjoy your summer, put some pride in ya stride and live the life, I will be “still down to earth and up to no good”
