his year’s theme is Great Britain, so expect red, white and blue to be everywhere. Aside from the races there will be a Fitness Zone and a Children’s Activity Area, which will be packed with fun things that are either free-of-charge or only £1. The high street will have a host of stalls with locally sourced and made produce like fudge and pies, plus a variety of street food on offer. There will be entertainment in the Market Place and in the bars and restaurants. And, the ever-popular Beer Bus is also back!

Last year saw more than 2,500 visitors making it the biggest event of its kind in Lincolnshire, and with many races to watch and participants dressed in crazy, fun outfits, there is something for the whole family. The previous year raised more than £6,000 for charity, so let’s support this amazing event in its 55th year and see if we can raise even more!

CASUAL DINING AT THE BREWERY TAP PREVOST Fine dining shrugs off the formality at Lee Clarke’s city centre eatery. Lee wants his customers to walk away from Prevost having had an enjoyable time as well as a great meal; stuffiness is eschewed in favour of a relaxed atmosphere and chatty staff, with dishes brought to the table by the kitchen team, including Lee himself, which makes for a more personal experience. W prevostpeterborough.co.uk

Unique in concept, The Tap, as it’s affectionately known by locals, houses its own micro-brewery (it is in fact the largest brew pub in Europe), hosts regular live music nights and serves some of the best Thai food for miles – order at the bar, then watch your meal being prepped through a window in the kitchen, whilst you sip on a pint of JHB. W thebrewery-tap.com

THE WICKED WITCH Seasonal produce is king at Dameon Clarke’s Wicked Witch, with top-quality ingredients being sourced from local producers, as well as being grown in the restaurant’s own greenhouse, lovingly tended by the neighbour. Dameon pairs classic French techniques with Asian influences, resulting in sophisticated and exciting dishes that are also incredibly pleasing to the eye. W thewickedwitchexperience.co.uk

SUNDAY LUNCH AT THE BLUE BELL, GLINTON. Going out for Sunday lunch seems to be growing in popularity and there are countless places to go for a decent roast, but Will Frankgate and team are, in my opinion, setting the standard. All elements of Will’s roasts are well executed with towering Yorkshire puds, exciting vegetable sides and proper tasty gravy. Pair this with a relaxed and inviting family-friendly atmosphere and you’re on to a winner. W thebluebellglinton.co.uk

SILVER OAK COFFEE

FOOD ON THE GO FROM MAMA TUK

I’m no coffee connoisseur, but Bruce Garfield at Silver Oak Coffee is and his passion and enthusiasm for coffee is evident in every single cup. Bruce buys traditionally and sustainably grown beans directly from farmers; a great quality product that’s ethically produced and tastes like heaven? Yes please! W silveroakcoffee.co.uk

Tukata Bird (Mama Tuk) can be found cooking up a storm every Saturday in Stamford’s Red Lion Square; after running a restaurant in Stamford Tukata began making her own range of authentic Thai sauces and marinades using recipes passed down from her mother and aunt, who both cooked in the kitchens of The Royal Palace in Bangkok. Tukata creates flavourful dishes from South East Asia – her beef bulgogi is amazing. W tuktukfoods.co.uk

THE SINGLE CASK The Single Cask, Stamford, has fast become my favourite place to go for a relaxed drink or two. Specialising in single malt whiskies, The Single Cask is a haven for whisky enthusiasts, but also serves a range of stonkingly good whisky-based cocktails for those that can’t handle their uisge beatha neat. A selection of tasty burgers and fries are available served with a jar of whisky-spiked bbq sauce – perfection! W thesinglecask.co.uk

THE MILL STREET PUB TASTER EVENINGS Every couple of months, The Mill Street’s Head Chef, Ollie Cairns-Baker and his team create new menus and invite food lovers to come and sample a number of dishes in a communal dining set up. I popped along to one and was really impressed by the whole experience – lots of interesting and well-cooked dishes, along with a handful of fellow foodies to talk gastronomics with over copious amounts of wine. 10 tips to help you achieve a healthier and happier you.

Address stress

Chronic stress causes hormonal imbalances resulting in disturbed sleep, digestion, poor mental health, affects our hunger hormones and can lead to weight gain. Mindfulness and meditation can benefit stress relief and improved well-being. Regular exercise, which is known to release ‘feelgood’ endorphins, triggers positive feelings and enhances the immune system.

Quality not quantity

Simply forget worrying about calories or fat and focus on eating whole, nutritious foods that are prepared simply.

Gut bacteria

The gut microbiome (community of bacteria in our large intestines) helps to keep our gut healthy, regulate metabolism and immune system, influence our behaviour and mood and research suggests they have a role in yo-yo dieting too. Feed your gut bacteria with a diet high in fibre – aim for your five-a-day, swap your cornflakes for branflakes, add some nuts and seeds to your salads.

Give a little self-love

Food swaps

Research has linked plant-based proteins with a reduced risk of chronic diseases like heart disease, cancer and type 2 diabetes. So, next time you’re in the supermarket, swap your sausages for beans and lentils, your crisps for nuts or give tofu a twirl.

14

14-15 Food Tips.indd 14

Carve out some me-time to help boost mood and energy levels: n Set the morning alarm 30 minutes earlier and decide how you want to best spend that time. n Pencil in at least 15 minutes each day just for you. n Look at that never-ending list and ask yourself which one could be eliminated.

July 2017 | E: info@scenepublishing.co.uk

23/06/2017 13:58

FOOD & DRINK

Plan meals

Add protein to every meal to keep you feeling fuller for longer, help with energy levels between meals and support weight loss. Adults should aim for around 20g protein at each meal time and try to include a protein source with your snack choices too. What does 20g protein look like? n 2 large eggs n 1 small chicken breast n 4 tbsp cottage cheese Good snack choices include a piece fruit and handful of nuts, oatcakes and peanut butter or a pot of Greek yogurt and handful of berries.

Stand up for your health!

Studies have linked excessive sitting with obesity, chronic disease and early death. With research suggesting the average adults spends seven hours a day sitting (increasing with age), we need to stand and jump at every opportunity. Reduce your sedentary time by standing at the bus stop instead of sitting, taking the stairs instead of the escalator or simply walking and talking while on the phone.

Don’t skimp on sleep

Sleep is central to our mental and physical health and lack of it has been linked to lowered immunity, anxiety and depression. Positive sleep hygiene includes regular exercise, limiting alcohol, caffeine and nicotine and establishing a bedtime routine.

Fad-free eating

If a diet looks too good to be true it probably is; or if it involves removing whole food groups such as dairy or gluten then ignore it. Most fad diets sweep the practical challenges we face like meal planning under the carpet. Dull, grey advice such as 5-a-day, choose wholegrains or eat less fat won’t excite you, but can get you sustainable results.

Plan meals

Healthy eating doesn’t just happen – you need to make it happen. Finding some time to plan or batch cook meals for you and your family to just reheat and eat when time-poor will stop you reaching for the takeaway menu.

M

y name is Kwoklyn Wan, a British-born, halfChinese, half-English food fanatic. I am totally in love with and completely fascinated by food. It is, and without question, the centre of my world. Raised deep within the restaurants and takeaways of the Chinese community I feel I was born to eat my way through life, to explore the culinary delights and to taste the world we live in. This month I wanted to explore a group of islands on the Pacific Ocean that are well-known for their customs, traditions and absolute mastery of all they prevail. Welcome to Japan – also known as The land of the Rising Sun. So, what does Japan have to offer for us foodies? The answer is – OMG lots! There’s Sushie, Ramen, Miso, Udon, Tempura, Soba, Onigiri, Mochi, Gyoza and the list goes on and on. So, where does this China boy start? Well, let’s start with one of my all-time favourite Japanese dishes…

Ramen

(Soup Noodles served with Chicken) INGREDIENTS 2 chicken breasts (boneless, skin on) n Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to season n 1 tbsp unsalted butter n 2 tsp sesame or vegetable oil n 2 tsp fresh ginger, minced n 3 tsp fresh garlic, minced n 3 tbsp soy sauce n 2 tbsp mirin n 4 cups rich chicken stock n 1 oz dried shitake mushrooms n 1/2 cup spring onions, sliced n 2 packs dried ramen noodles n 2 eggs n

METHOD Cook the chicken

Preheat the oven to 180°C. Season the chicken generously with salt and pepper. Melt the T: 01778 382762 | July 2017

butter in a large, oven-safe frying pan over a medium heat. Add the chicken, skin-side down, and cook for about 5-7 minutes. Flip the chicken over and cook for another 4-5 minutes, until golden. Transfer the frying pan to the oven and roast for 15-20 minutes, until the chicken is cooked through. Remove from the oven, transfer the chicken to a plate and cover with foil until ready to serve. Make the ramen broth

Heat the oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add the garlic and ginger, and cook for a few minutes until softened. Add the soy sauce and mirin, and stir to combine. Cook for another minute. Add the stock, cover, and bring to boil. Remove the lid,

and allow to simmer uncovered for 5 minutes, then add the dried mushrooms. Simmer gently for another 10 minutes and season with salt to taste. Assemble the ramen bowls

Slice the chicken into thin pieces. Set aside. Boil a pan of water and add the ramen noodles, cook for 2-3 minutes, until soft, then divide the noodles into two large bowls. Add the chicken and the ramen broth. Top with spring onions. Lightly boil an egg so the yolk is still runny, peel and slice in half and serve with your ramen.

THE BULL MARKET DEEPING

A place for the whole family! Richard and Dawn Parrot have always had big plans for The Bull in Market Deeping and now they are starting to see some of them come to life. The garden was completed last summer and boasts a fantastic, safe, enclosed area for children and includes a FREE bouncy castle as well swings, slides and climbing frames. This area has been a firm favourite for local families. This year e plans include the removal of the internal staircase as well as relocating the

SAVE THE PLANET C How eco friendly is your bathroom?

limate change is the biggest threat to our world with forests disappearing, rising sea levels and wildlife extinction. So, if you want to do your part as an eco warrior you can start by making the smallest changes to your beauty routine.

Beat the beads

Greenpeace demanded a ban on all plastic microbeads last September because of the alarming amounts of pollution they are causing to our oceans. Plastic microbeads were often found in many budget high street shower gels, scrubs and exfoliators. These tiny plastic microbeads are not only harmful if caught in your eye, but they are also poisonous to fish and marine wildlife.

Save water

Beware palm oil

We are all told to cut our showers to less than five minutes and limit the amount of water we use in our baths. To help you step out the shower a bit quicker and shave some time off your water usage invest in a natural shampoo that is nourishing and non-drying so you won’t have to use a conditioner at all.

Palm oil is found in many beauty products from shampoos to lipsticks. This natural ingredient may seem innocent enough, but in fact the extraction and production of palm oil is contributing to mass deforestation in Eastern Asia. This in turn has resulted in devastating loss of life of orangutans and tigers.

Go organic It goes without saying, but natural and organic ingredients are the gentlest to use in your daily skincare routine rather than using a cocktail of artificial ingredients using a variation of parabens and preservatives. T: 01778 382762 | July 2017

23 Beauty.indd 23

Don’t forget the packaging Buying from brands that use recyclable and sustainable packaging is another way you can reduce your damage to the planet. There is a growing trend for brands to start going greener and use biodegradable packaging that is less harmful to the environment.

IN THE NECK

When my neck pain got worse I sought the help of physiotherapist Ann Clare says The Scene’s Dee Kennedy. I knew I had to do something about the discomfort I had been experiencing in my neck for the past year or so, especially as the pain had steadily worsened over the last few months. I self-diagnosed arthritis as I couldn’t walk or stand for long periods of time, but as the pain continued I realised my lack of medical knowledge wouldn’t solve my problem. I had to do something. I stumbled upon Ann Clare at Cell Regeneration in Tinwell, Stamford, when I visited them to talk about our sister magazine Gravitas. I was surprised to learn that a number of muscle and joint pain conditions can be resolved by either MBST (see panel), or

WHAT IS MBST-THERAPY? MR-Therapy (magnetic resonance) works at a cellular level. The technology transfers energy directly into the cells of the treated tissue to stimulate the regenerative processes. This non-invasive therapy treats the causes of pain to heal and relieve symptoms associated with arthritis, osteoporosis, or sports/accident injuries. physiotherapy. I booked an appointment. Ann and I discussed my general health and my symptoms. She diagnosed a disc problem at the top of my neck. I was relieved to find out it wasn’t arthritis. Ann advised I use an ice pack daily, and follow a specific set of exercises. She went on to explain that the pain would disappear in two weeks time. And, it did! I, obviously, highly recommend Cell Regeneration, and Ann – she was professional, understanding, and very knowledgeable.

Raising awareness and money for Evergreen Care Trust.

mma Holttum, a Stamford-based marketing expert, has been helping to promote the local charity Evergreen Care Trust. Evergreen Care Trust is a charity close to Emma’s heart. She explains: “Evergreen offers many vital services for older people, ensuring their clients never feel isolated. I initially contacted Evergreen after losing my dear Grandad, his departure left such a void in my life. Even though we’d visit and take him out, he was still lonely. A day without a knock at the door, or a phone call from a friend or relative must feel like weeks to an older person.” LOCAL HELP

“Evergreen offers a host of services that make such a huge difference to so many lives, making sure people of Stamford, Bourne and The Deepings never feel lonely or vulnerable. But the services it offers needs funds.” RAISING MONEY

“I was inspired to start running competitively after cheering along runners at last year’s London Marathon. I’d already completed a half marathon, but a full race was quite daunting. However, with the thought I was raising money for a worthwhile cause I figured it would spur me on,” said Emma.

waiting in anticipation soon became a crowd full of energy when the countdown began. Standing there on my own I felt part of something so big, but lonely all at the same time when all of sudden I bumped into Claire Morely from Stamford Striders! Then an oldschool friend I hadn’t seen for 22 years! “There were many highs and lows throughout the 26.2 miles. My husband and son came to support me and although they saw me, unfortunately their cheers were drowned out by the amazing atmosphere created by the rest of the crowds. “Reality kicked in during the second half of the marathon when I began to see more people being treated by medics. It started to dawn on me the size of the challenge I had Emma’s undertaken. So when the pain kicked fundraising target in around mile 19, I decided not to was £1,500, however, push too hard and just get myself the current total is more across that finish line for Evergreen. than £2,200. Donations “Eventually the finishing line are still welcomed at uk.virginmoneygiving. loomed. At this point I just wanted to com/EmmaHolttum1 be reunited with my family. Running through the finish line was just fantastic! I did it in 5 hours, 17 minutes, and 37 seconds. We took a long walk around London to keep my legs moving and ended up at Serpentine in Hyde Park for a well-deserved drink. “I honestly don’t think it has sunk in yet. My body is telling me I have, but I think my mind needs a bit of time to catch up.”

Phase one

T

he current development work at Serpentine Green is well underway. Both Next and Costa will be opening their new stores this August and M&S Simply Food will open in January 2018. There are plans afoot to develop the south side as well and to give the centre a total overhaul. The idea of phase two is to include new leisure facilities, complemented by high-quality restaurants and cafes. The under-utilised Rotunda, together with the southern mall, will be demolished, with an equivalent amount of retail space built to provide high-quality,

30

outward-facing shops. A new town square will be created, with improved landscaping, which can be used for outdoor activities. The existing mall will also be refurbished to give a complete facelift. David Wait, the centre manager said: “We estimate that around 240 new jobs will be created through these proposals. We have a strong relationship with the Hampton community as well as families living locally that use the centre. We welcome any feedback on the proposal and want to involve the community throughout the whole process before final plans are submitted.

10 genius designer tricks revealed by Rachel Grant.

1

START WITH YOUR COLOUR SCHEME If you are growing tired of a room, but don’t want to splash the cash with a complete overhaul, then a lick of fresh paint can make all the difference. Decide on what you want your eye to be drawn to in the room and build around that. If you want the kitchen island to be your focal point, paint it in a contrasting colour to make an impact.

2

DECORATIVE DELIGHTS Use decorative mirrors to create the feeling of light and space within you home, it’s a simple and cost effective trick. For larger rooms, or

34

34-35 Hunters.indd 34

any room with a limited amount of natural light, place mirrors directly across from the windows, to add instant light.

3

MIX IT UP Mix and match – textures, patterns, old and new, expensive and inexpensive. There’s nothing wrong with placing family heirlooms alongside your modern couch. All good interior decorators will tell you that the most important aspect to decorating your home is to reflect your personality and style. There’s no reason why past and present can’t beautifully co-exist together so long as it’s done right.

4

BREATH OF FRESH AIR Add plants to every room – small or large, many or few. Plants are an inexpensive means to accessorise your space and add colour and texture. Not only are plants beautiful, but many can clean household air and balance humidity.

5

DARE TO BE DIFFERENT Paint and wallpaper isn’t just for walls. Think outside the box – consider adding a splash of colour to the back of your display unit. It will transform what was an ordinary cabinet into something inexpensive and fabulous. Other unexpected places to consider are wooden

Small statement pieces floors, ceilings, doorframes or fireplaces.

6

MARVELLOUS MULTIPLES Clusters of lights, groups of plants or multiple mirrors can make a big, inexpensive design impact.

7

MAKE A CHECKLIST Understand your space by taking a walk through your home with an objective eye. Make a mental checklist as you go of things that you like and don’t like about your space right now, and figure out why. This inventory will help inform the decorating decisions and purchases you make in the future. T: 01778 382762 | July 2017

34-35 Hunters.indd 35

8

SEASONAL RUGS Throw rugs give warmth and can add great texture, colour and personality to your living space. Hardwood floors are beautiful and easy to maintain, but they lack the comfort that carpeted floors offer, especially in the cooler months. Consider changing the rugs to reflect the seasons using warmer tones for cooler months and lighter ones for the warmer days.

9

FUNCTIONALITY It’s all very well having a room that looks incredible, but if it doesn’t achieve the functionality aspects that you and your family require

then the chances are it will become redundant space. Purchasing a statement sofa that is aesthetically pleasing but isn’t comfortable is an expensive mistake.

10

CLUTTER CHAOS Badly arranged furniture is a common mistake, but it’s easily fixable. If your bedroom feels small it maybe because there’s too much in it – take away the items that are closing in the space. Kitchen worktop clutter detracts from your room looking stylish, so make space in your cabinets to free your counter space, which will make your kitchen feel calmer – even larger.

Shrubs, bushes, hedges, thickets – here’s our favourites.

A

few well-placed shrubs not only give your garden structure and substance, but also add a splash of colour and the evergreen varieties will give your borders a continually attractive shape and foliage. Here are 10 suggestions for some garden greats.

1

HYDRANGEAS give a dramatic display with their beautiful large flowers. They prefer a sheltered spot with moist soil and particularly like partial shade. A good-natured hydrangea is Annabelle – producing lots of stunning white flowers.

40

40-41 Garden 10.indd 40

2

RIBES SANGUINEUM, the flowering currant, is a great fast-growing shrub for instant impact. It is deciduous and is both happy in sun or shade and most types of soil. It is covered with pendant-shaped pink flowers heads in spring.

3

FORSYTHIA makes a great border or feature shrub due to its fast-growing nature and dense woody stems. It enjoys full sun or partial shade in well-drained soil. It has a vibrant sunny yellow blossom in spring and lovely green leafy foliage in summer.

5

CORNUS ALBA OR DOGWOOD is a long-standing favourite shrub for any garden. It’s happy pretty much anywhere and in winter has stems in a fiery yellow through to red. In spring, it has white flowers and has always been popular due it its versatility.

6

PHOTINIA is a vigorous evergreen shrub that is ideal for creating privacy along with an attractive focal point. The leaves start off a rich red in the spring and change through to a deep green in summer. It prefers a sheltered position, but is happy in almost any soil.

PRIVET is one the most popular fastgrowing shrubs for hedging. It has evergreen leaves and although thinning in colder winters, regains its bushy dense foliage in spring. It has small white flowers in summer and responds well to regular pruning to keep its shape and density.

7

SARCOCOCCA CONFUSE, SWEET BOX, is a compact Chinese evergreen with winterfragrant cream flowers with a heavy, intoxicating scent. This can be a goodsized shrub of 4-6ft and has glossy green leaves and black berries.

8 9

AUCUBA JAPONICA, THE JAPANESE LAUREL, grows up to around 3ft. It is quick to get established and easy to grow, even tolerating heavy shade. With pretty variations, from the yellow spotted Crotonifolia to the bright green Rozannie, sometimes with large red fruits.

PHILADELPHUS BELLE ÉTOILE OR MOCK ORANGE is a compact medium-sized deciduous shrub with oval leaves. It is highly scented with white flowers appearing in late spring and early summer.

10

BUDDLEIA the classic BUTTERFLY BUSH, is a fast-growing shrub and extremely easy to grow. Its large purple or white flowers act like a magnet to butterflies and bees, making it a fabulous shrub for encouraging these pretty visitors into the garden.

There are many beautiful shrubs available and whether you choose yours based on shape, colour, scent or just ease of growth, hopefully some of these beauties will be adorning your garden and giving you pleasure for many years to come. T: 01778 382762 | July 2017

HAVE YOU PLANNED FOR YOUR

? s r a e y t n e m e r i ret I f you go back 100 years most people expected to work until they died or at best be supported by their children. Even 50 years ago retirement would have meant five to 10 years of fairly quiet life before you died. Today, however, most people looking to stop working in their early to mid-60s would expect to have 10 to 15 years of active life doing all the things they didn’t have time to do when they were at work. This, of course, requires money, which is where the problems can start. Clearly the state will provide some benefits, many people have their own plans and some people may be fortunate enough to receive an inheritance or other windfall. However, many will simply not have enough money to maintain their standard of living let alone go on one or two holidays a year.

Call the office today for a FREE initial meeting to discuss your financial strategy for your own retirement and for the years beyond.

At the start of her reign in T 01778 342291 1952, the Queen W liberty-partnership sent out 255 100th .co.uk birthday telegrams. By the end of 2014, the number had increased to 7,517. Figures from the Office for National Statistics at the same time showed 13,780 people were over the age of 100 in Britain, compared with just 6,860 in 2000, and it is now estimated one in three children born today will reach 100. The main issue here is that we are all living longer and so our finances need to stretch further. It is clear that state pension benefits will be limited and that the Government purse is already stretched. So you will need to have a plan – which is where we can help.

TWILIGHT YEARS T Getting older – it’s no fun, or is it?

he recent general election brought the crisis in social care into focus along with the chaotic plans that the parties had to solve the problem. At the same time, local media has highlighted a case where an elderly lady was financially abused by her neighbours who stole £150,000 from her. Dementia is now the most common factor in deaths in the UK. It seems that it is bad news all round when we should be looking forward to our old age. Or, is it? Does everything have to be doom and gloom? The good news is that on average a person can look forward to a longer and healthier life, enjoying more time with their friends and family. You will be more active than your parents were, and the current generation of pensioners is the richest ever.

Even better, with the right sort of planning you can protect your assets from the worst ravages of the care system, you can ensure that you won’t become the victim of financial abuse, and you can give your loved ones the powers to make decisions as you grow older even if you can’t make them for yourself. The Alzheimer’s society is creating millions of Dementia Friends who know that it is possible to live well with dementia and they are helping people to adapt. It seems that medical advances in the treatment of the disease are announced every month. So getting older is something to be anticipated rather than worried about. All you need is a plan.

I

t is recorded that Sir Everard Digby, son of Everard Digby, was born and lived at the Red Hall in Bourne and was raised as a Protestant. However, he and his wife converted to Catholicism and in the autumn of 1605 joined a Catholic pilgrimage to the shrine of St Winefride’s Holy Well in North Wales. About this time Everard met Robert Catesby, a religious fanatic planning to blow up the House of Lords and kill King James I. The full extent of Digby’s involvement in the plot is unknown, but he prepared a ‘hunting party’, ready for the planned uprising. However, the plot failed and Digby was soon captured and taken to the Tower of London and on Monday 30 January 1606 he was hanged, drawn and quartered. A century later the Red Hall was in the hands of gentleman James Digby who appears as deputy steward to the manor of Bourn Abbotts at a session of the manorial court in October 1730.

Nine months later, on Sunday 4 September 1644 Parliamentary soldiers under the command of the Earl of Manchester left Lincoln after the battle of Marston Moor and headed south to Huntingdon. On Tuesday 6 they probably paused here at Bourne because, in the Parish Registers, a burial is recorded: “A soulgeire of ye Earle of Manchesters Regim’t”.

Robert Catesby planned to blow up the House of Lords.

The only other reference to military activities in Bourne in the Civil War is the note that “the Garryson of Bourn Castle began upon the 11th October A.D. 1645.” Built in Norman times and later structured as a motte and double castle the structure was destroyed after being used by Cromwell’s troops in 1645. PETERBOROUGH’S

HISTORICAL TREASURES

Peterborough Cathedral print c1880

To celebrate The Scene’s 10th anniversary, local historians and authors June and Vernon Bull have compiled a list of their 10 favourite historical sites.

W

e think every resident and tourist should explore our selection of Peterborough’s most historic and iconic buildings. Soak or should that be Soke (for those in the know) up these incredible sites – some built many centuries ago – think of the feats of engineering and how society has changed through time. Why the Cathedral and its Precincts? PE1 1XS Well, 2018 will mark the 900th year of the current building’s existence. The Cathedral is the oldest and largest building in the city. The 13th century West Front is one of the most striking Gothic constructions in Europe – with a tiny 14th century porch built into the middle arch.

The Grade I listed Knights’ Chamber, now part of the new visitor centre, used to be decorated with pictures of knights who met there. Outside it features a gabled 13th/14th century gateway with a statue of King Edward. It is remarkable that in size, Peterborough Cathedral ranks among the first six in England. Katherine of Aragon, the first wife of Henry VIII, is buried here, as was Mary, Queen of Scots until her body was exhumed and reinterred in Westminster Abbey in 1612. Monuments to their memory are features of the Cathedral. Catch some excellent beverages and a variety of good value meals and light refreshments in Becket’s Tea Room. Go join the splendour!

It’s those hazy lazy days of Art Deco – Lido lovers PE1 5BW This open-air swimming pool in Bishops Road is owned by the City Council and was built in 1936 to the design of a local panel of architects. At first it was unheated, but the designers had the foresight to provide pipework for a later installation. It was built on land originally owned by the Ecclesiastical Commissioners who sold it to the City Council (then the City Corporation) in 1927. The main pool is 165ft by 60ft and varies in depth from 3ft to 9ft and it had a 5 metre diving stage with springboards at 1 metre and 3 metre along with a water chute – these have since been demolished. The children’s pool is 70ft by 24ft. The filtration plant can treat the full capacity of the pools’ 388,000 gallons of water in six hours. Sadly, the building received a direct hit by the Luftwaffe on 8 June 1940 and the Lido’s northwest corner pavilion was badly damaged by the German bombs – this was the enemy’s first air raid on the city.

Customs House & River Nene Pay your dues – call at the Customs House PE1 1HA Originally this early 17th century building topped by a cupola was a granary and owned by the Dean and Chapter of the Cathedral. It then became a Toll House for goods shipped up and down the River Nene and was later sold to Earl Fitzwilliam of Milton Hall. Taxes and tolls were charged on goods that were brought in by barges and Fen lighters that travelled between Wisbech and Northampton. Goods shipped included wood and agricultural products like malt and corn from the fertile Fens. Even French prisoners were transported by river to Peterborough during the Napoleonic War and marched from the Customs House, used as a transfer station, to the camp at Norman Cross. Church bells cast at William Penn’s foundry, located near to where the Town Hall is today, were also transported by barges. River traffic included passenger vessels or packets, which did journeys three times a week from Peterborough to Wisbech. Apparently in 1810, our local poet T: 01778 382762 | July 2017

56-61 History V2.indd 57

John Clare used to make this journey regularly. Many long-standing residents of Peterborough will recall that the Custom’s House was occupied by the Hammond family in the last century. They operated a boat hire business from the Custom’s House wharf and many a pleasant time was had by locals and visitors alike who chose to hire rowing boats for trips along the River Nene. Since 1942 Peterborough Sea Cadets have used the building and they continue to do so operating as T.S. Gildenburgh. A walk in the park – Central Park dating to 1877 PE1 4DX Over the years Central Park, situated on Park Crescent has grown and offers a variety of facilities including a popular paddling pool, sunken garden, sensory garden, aviary, children’s play area, tennis courts, bowling and putting green and the bustling Buttercross Tearooms run by Vince and Filomena Terranova who always have

a warm welcome for folk, whether they are residents, tourists or visiting city centre workers. Central Park is also the resting place for Jimmy the Donkey, born on the Somme in June 1916, behind enemy lines, and was adopted by the 1St Scottish Rifles as their mascot. He was demobilised in 1919 and was bought by the Peterborough Branch of the RSPCA. Jimmy was usually found in his paddock at the Burghley Square/Broadway corner where the DWP and HMRC offices are today. He died on 10 May 1943, aged 26, and is buried in the Children’s Corner of Central Park where his memorial stone can be seen to this day. …continued on page 60

FA M I LY & F R I E N D S Take in Thorpe Hall, Longthorpe PE3 6LW The building dates to Oliver St John (b.1598; d.1673), a Lord Chief Justice who supported Parliament in the Civil War, and who bought in 1653 the freehold on an area of Longthorpe – some 26 hectares. Oliver St John had Thorpe Hall built from 1650 onwards out of the ruins of Peterborough Cathedral’s Bishop’s Palace and cloister, plus stone from Barnack quarries. Thorpe Hall was finally completed in 1656 by the builder Peter Mills. The mid-17th century architect, John Webb (b.1611; d.1672), went to great pains to vary both the design and the material of Thorpe Hall. Together with local stone he used various types of marble. The carpentry is also exquisite with scrolls ending the architraves and five panelled oak doors featuring abundant swags and scrolls. Although the dining room is less than 20 feet square it is filled with moulded fruit swags – both on the ceiling and on the oak wall panels and doors. The adornments are breathtakingly beautiful. Thorpe Hall can be hired for weddings, and the gardens and café are open all year round.

Visit our ghostly mansion of a museum and art gallery PE1 1LF WW1’s lonely ANZAC soldier is said to haunt the building – a popular place to go at Halloween. In 1856, the 5th Earl Fitzwilliam bought the late “Squire” Thomas Cooke’s mansion in Priestgate (currently the city’s Museum from 1931 and Art Gallery added in 1939) and gave it in exchange for the Milton Street premises. The Priestgate Georgian House (built in 1816 for newly-weds Thomas and Charlotte Cooke) became the Infirmary from 1856 until 1928, and a building behind it was the Fever House, which took smallpox cases until 1874. In 1894, this part of the Georgian house converted to the Dispenser’s House. Did you know that one of the early trainee doctors at Priestgate was Professor St Clair Thompson (b. 1859; d. 1943) who attended Kings School, Peterborough? He went on to work under Joseph Lister at King’s College Hospital, London and later became one of Edward VII’s doctors and was present at the King’s death on 6 May 1910. Meander around mystical Flag Fen PE6 7QJ Once a wet Fenland bay, Flag Fen lies at the centre of that lakeland site to the east of Peterborough. During the Bronze Age (around 2100BC and 700BC) a large alignment of posts crossed a kilometre of this wetland to link the two

West end from St John's Square

sides of this now important and intensively studied prehistoric landscape. Francis Prior (Channel 4 Time Team fame) discovered and excavated the site in 1982. His survey revealed the remains of a Bronze Age axial field system. Finds from the site included pottery, bone and well-preserved wooden structures. In the surrounding water of Flag Fen votive offerings (eg daggers broken in half, placed on top of each other) were found supporting the theory that Flag Fen was a site involved in religious rites. Also among the daggers and jewellery were small white beach pebbles (not natural to this area) suggesting that people travelled some distances to give offerings to the gods. Wetland places were given mystical status by prehistoric peoples and items like weaponry and jewellery became offerings to the gods as channels to the spiritual world. Also, water was considered to be a looking glass through which we all entered the next world. Must Farm Bronze Age boats (discovered in 2011) and Britain’s most complete Bronze Age wheel are stunning finds that provide a glimpse of the human struggle against a changing environment. Little wonder that this area is known as Peterborough’s Pompeii.

Peterscourt doorway now Where are the Huguenots commemorated? Peterborough Parish Church, St John the Baptist PE1 1XB The original Parish Church of St John the Baptist stood to the east of the Cathedral in an area called Bondgate, later Boongate. The old churchyard still retains the name of St John’s Close. The former wooden Church building was probably constructed around 1078, but eventually the area east of the town became prone to flooding and when the growth and subsequent reordering of Peterborough took place this left the old Parish Church cut off from the centre of the expanding market town which also serviced the district. The former church was eventually pulled down and closed in 1402 with the agreement of Henry Beaufort, Bishop of Lincoln (the largest Diocese in England). It is interesting to note that Bishop Beaufort was the son of John of Gaunt, half-brother to the reigning King Henry IV. The rebuilding and relocation of the existing Parish Church to the heart of the town began in 1402 and was finally completed in 1407. The relocated church of St. John the Baptist, in the centre of the city, took five years to build because it was funded entirely at the expense of the parishioners. Some commentators of the time noted that Abbot Genge obtained his “foundership” at a remarkably cheap rate! There is lots to discover about this amazing church – not least its links to the last man to be publicly hanged in the city; to Sexton Scarlett (Old Scarlet…the King of Spades), and Britain’s very own Rembrandt et al. There are several other subjects, but the meaning is unclear owing to the loss of the accompanying inscriptions.

Enjoy the café on Wednesday and Saturday mornings. Early 14th century wall paintings at Longthorpe Tower PE3 6LU The Tower section of the manor house was possibly erected by Robert de Thorpe, steward of Peterborough Abbey from 1330, and tenant of the building. The paintings are generally dated to c.1330 with the decoration covering all the walls, the window splays and the vault. In the vault are the four Evangelist Symbols and David with his Musicians. These murals represent the Labours of the Months (eg pruning, digging, hawking etc) along with various birds and animals, the Apostles holding scrolls with the articles of the Creed accompanied by personifications of the Church, a scene involving a hermit, the Seven Ages of Man, the Nativity, the Three Living and the Three Dead, a Wheel of the Five Senses and seated figures of Edward III and Edmund Woodstock.

Where can you find a posh door from the London Blitz? Peterscourt of course PE1 1SA Located in City Road the architect of this building was Sir George Gilbert Scott who designed St Pancras Station, the Prince Albert Memorial and the Foreign Office. He was master of the gothic revival and designed 800 buildings in England alone. He produced churches, schools and colleges, hospitals, workhouses, asylums and vicarages galore. Sir George Scott has 607 structures listed as historic – more than any other architect (next is Sir Edwin Lutyens with 402). Peterscourt was built between 1856 and 1859 and was opened in 1864 as St Peter’s College – a Church of England teacher training college for men. It is constructed of red brick and has paired lancet-headed windows with head diapered brick in recess along with patterns in a blue-black brick. Its main doorway was brought from the London Guildhall, which was damaged in the blitz of 1940. The Guildhall door is made of early 18th century wood and has finely carved Corinthian pilasters with swags on a frieze and a rectangular fanlight with Gothic style glazing. For more information on these and other historic places to visit, contact Peterborough Visitor Information Centre, 41 Bridge Street, PE1 1HA from Monday to Saturday 9am to 5pm, excluding Bank Holidays. ourne2Play has decided to pay for the park equipment on behalf of South Kesteven District Council (SKDC) who will own and maintain it, meaning you can expect to have a new play park this year, hopefully by the start of autumn. We have raised more than our initial target amount due to a massive £10,000 donation from Thomas Cook, a further £7,300 from Len Pick Trust, which is in addition to its initial £10,000 donation, a further £5,000 from SKDC 106 money, and we are still part of the Co-op fundraising scheme which continues to raise funds for this cause. We also hope to add fencing and extra picnic tables and benches during the second phase of the project. Bourne2Play will shortly be in a position to order the equipment. Once this is completed we will have a better idea of timescales and will let you know via our Facebook page and website. Bourne2Play would like to thank every local business, charity and individual who has contributed to this massive project and we will continue to work hard to get this done for the community in good time.

THE BRITISH

INVENTION CONVENTION Calling all inventors, designers and engineers of Cambridgeshire.

A

new, innovative three-day event is coming to Peterborough Arena this Autumn and its organisers, Gifted, is actively seeking out potential exhibitors from Cambridgeshire. Around 10,000 people a day are expected to attend The British Invention Convention (BIC) event 21-23 September. BIC has been created to bring together the latest innovators, researchers, developers, designers, engineers and inventors to enable these talented people to share and showcase their products, designs, ideas and findings to the trade, to industry, to the media, to investors and the public. BIC will be split into 10 key areas – Communications, Consumer, Education, Energy, Financial, Health, Home & Property, Recreation, Technology and Transport. Exhibitors will be able to demonstrate their inventions and gadgets to visitors and exhibitors and sponsors can share interesting facts, knowledge and insights in the seminar area. There will also be an Angels’ Den, a Dragons’ Den and a history of innovation area. So, all Cambridgeshire-based academics, students, individuals and companies should contact Gifted organisers about exhibiting. And, for those interested in being part of the event, but are unable to meet the exhibitor stand costs, you are encouraged to make contact anyway, as there may be the option to find generous sponsors willing to pay your exhibitor fees.

Why you may want to exhibit at The BIC: Looking to showcase your product or service? Needing to find investors and/or funding opportunities to help turn your invention, design, research, innovation into reality? n Wanting to undertake some market research, do consumer surveys or some data capturing? n Looking for advice and guidance from professionals? n Ready to try out and demonstrate your product or service to the public, the media and potential investors? n n

Over and above our monthly magazine, the Scene also offers businesses other ways to create exposure for their products and services via totally different avenues – you can book Social Media packages to assist with posts and blogs on all of the social platforms, giving you another route to new clients. Just a few months ago we launched the Scene Networking meetings, which are held on the last Thursday of each month and is an informal way to meet with other business owners and potential new customers.

his year’s theme is Great Britain, so expect red, white and blue to be everywhere.
