THIS
Happy holidays Scene readers!
W
hether you are on your way to or returning from your hols, the Scene is here and packed full of great ideas and superb ways to spend a sunny afternoon. We have our monthly gardening tips, how to entertain the kids, and different ways with Pimms plus away day getaways. It also will not be long (although at times it won’t feel like it…) before the children are heading back to school so take a look at our Back to School feature in association with Queensgate Shopping Centre and the Importance of having shoes fitted feature from the experts at John Lewis. We are also featuring two specialist columns from local hypnotherapists Hummingbird and Forward Focus Hypno who have kindly written about ways of dealing with children under stress, whether they are toddlers or teenagers. This month we feature a food review on a totally different dining experience that we enjoyed at Katana, Teppanyaki & Sushi Restaurant in Spalding. It was a truly exceptional evening with a bit of theatre and fun as well as perfectly cooked food! This issue keeps you informed of what’s on, where and when including the much-anticipated Italian festival and the Vintage Car Festival on the Embankment – so much to do and see. Have a fantastic August!

f there is one thing I love about The Square in Market Deeping is that when they say they are going to do something – they always deliver! Sabrina Iredale is the force behind the changes and improvements, and she works tirelessly to look for new ways to give customers what they want. She began three years ago by sourcing a fantastic authentic Thai chef and opened up Thai on the Square, then came the new launch and name change from the Stone Loach to The Square, and with this she added a new cocktail bar and upgraded outside space. The latest additions include a fabulous Gin Bar offering more than 15 new and traditional gins, served in beautiful gin glasses with all of the trimmings as well as the delicate tasting Fever Tree Tonics to accompany them. And, there is a Thai bar menu available downstairs with a lunch platter for only £7! The left-hand side of the bar has been transformed into a cozy and more intimate setting with new lighting above trendy

copper tables set into six stunning booth style seating areas. The transformation is unbelievable, turning a dated drinking hole in to a more luxurious venue with a great atmosphere and serving cocktails, gin and Thai! “The opening was a huge success,” says Sabrina “The brewery has helped along the way and ensured that all the work was completed to high standard, and the feedback has been extremely positive. We want to create a welcoming place to eat and drink, and to offer a wide variety of options. The booths have transformed the seating area and offer a perfect place to sit with friends in your own space.” If you have a celebration or you are just out with friends, you can reserve a booth and you can even have waitress service for your drinks! Just ask at the bar. So last, but by all means not least, the garden area is also having a facelift – the seating has been upgraded and artificial turf laid to make it a super cool and trendy place to grab some sunshine.

The Teppanyaki and Sushi restaurant takes a slice of Spalding says Heidi Semple.
K
atana Teppanyaki and Sushi restaurant offers Japanese cuisine and a dramatic theatrical experience with your food cooked in front of you. Teppanyaki is a modern Japanese style of cooking; part barbeque, part flaming grill. The chefs cook and entertain with equal skill for the ultimate experience in fine Japanese cuisine. Owners Deepak and Shah work with their chefs to ensure that every dish is prepared and cooked is the best quality and taste – using only fresh local produce, authentic ingredients and traditional cooking methods. The menu includes a choice of meat, fish and vegetarian dishes with sides of rice and stirfry, all cooked to your personal taste; Japanese food does not have to spicy, but if you prefer some heat with your meat, then just ask the chef. Katana offers a three-course Teppanyaki experience, which includes a mixed starter of Chicken Dumplings, Vegetable Spring Rolls and Fresh Fish Sushi, and then for mains you choose two of the following: Rib Eye Steak, Chicken, Duck, Salmon,

Tilapia and Tiger Prawns. And, finally a choice of ice creams served with a warm fruit salad all for only £29.95. There are many variations on the Teppanyaki and if want to indulge there is lobster and Wagyu beef. In addition, there are other plenty of other dishes on the menu like platters of Sushi served either on a bed of rice or wrapped in rice. If you prefer tempura dishes then there are fish and vegetable options including Soft Shell Crab. A selection of noodles, curries and salads are also available and you can mix up the dishes to find your perfect combination. Katana has a fully stocked bar with wines and spirits plus Japanese lager, Asahi on tap for £4.95 a pint. Katana also offers a selection of cocktails both traditional and Japanese varieties made with Sake, including the house cocktail, Katana Wave. Katana is a must for people looking for a different experience and to enjoy some entertainment while dining.

ith summer here, that refreshing jug of Pimm’s is set to be a tabletop essential for al fresco feasts. The quintessentially English beverage boasts a recognisable tawny colour and a delicious blend of citrus fruits, offering a familiar taste of summer.
Apparently, Pimm’s isn’t just for drinking on a deliciously hot summer’s day! Who knew?
How to make the perfect Pimm’s
Pimm’s scones
Soak fruit in Pimm’s and add a couple of spoonfuls of Pimm’s to the cream.
1
FRUIT FUSION Don’t overload your Pimm’s with fruit. Instead, pick a few strong flavours that complement each other. An unusual flavour combination that works well is pomegranate and basil. Or, take your Pimm’s to super-food heights with the quirky addition of trendy Acai berries.
2
HERBAL REMEDY If you’re using herbs like basil and mint, crush the leaves before adding them to your drink to maximise the aroma.
3
CUE THE CRANBERRY For those with a sweet tooth add a splash of cranberry juice, or flavoured lemonade.
4
ICE, ICE BABY Get creative by freezing flowers into your ice cube tray. However, limit the ice cubes to ensure the Pimm’s isn’t too diluted.
5
SUGAR-COAT IT Sprinkle fruit pieces with sugar and let them stand for 10 minutes in a little lemon juice to macerate which will avoid a soggy fruit situation.

It doesn’t get much more British than jelly for dessert. These jars are layered with Pimm’s jelly and cream to make a portable picnic treat.
Pimm’s ice pops
These grownup ices are filled with strawberries, cucumber and Pimm’s for a refreshing party popsicle.

e are often too busy worrying about whether we should cut out wheat or join the latest food craze and sprinkle bee pollen on our porridge (don’t by the way!) that we miss the bit where evidence tells us to eat MORE fibre and a lot more of it.
What is it good for? Fibre has been shown to reduce our risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes, protect against colon cancer, promote a regular bowel motion, aid weight loss (by keeping us fuller for longer) and certain fibres (oats, beans, fruit and veg) help lower cholesterol levels. The benefits don’t stop there. Our gut bacteria loves fibre and keeping these guys on your good

How to boost your fibre intake
If you have a sweet tooth reach for a flapjack next time instead of the doughnut. Oats are a great source of soluble fibre, or make homemade cakes with added fruit, nuts and seeds. Instead of having the usual packet of crisps with your sandwich, replace them with a small handful of nuts Linseeds are high in soluble fibre and healthy fats. Sprinkle over your cereal, salad or yogurt. If you struggle with constipation, aim to gradually include to 1 tbsp linseeds per day in your diet. Add beans or lentils to your stews, soups, salads or curries. Sprinkle chopped peanuts over your noodle dishes. Keep a pack of frozen fruit in the freezer and simply defrost and add to greek yogurt for an alternative to fruit yogurts. Use wholemeal breadcrumbs instead of white, or wholemeal flour when baking instead of white flour. Replace your crackers and cheese with oatcakes or ryvitas. Use wholemeal pasta/brown rice or 50:50. Add chopped nuts/pine nuts/pumpkin seeds or pulses such as chickpeas to your salads. If you are a chocolate enthusiast swap your regular chocolate bar for some dark chocolatecoated brazil nuts. Swap your jam on toast for peanut butter and banana – an extra 4g fibre and you won’t be reaching for the rease nibbles mid-morning. Note: Inc your fibre re and ensu gradually your se a re c in you ke. fluid inta side will make for a happier, healthier you. The gut microbiome (community of bacteria in our large intestines) help keep our gut healthy, regulate metabolism and immune system, manufacture vitamins such as K and evidence is linking the gut microbiome to obesity, mental health and mood. On average, we eat 18g fibre per day, not the recommended 30g per day. However, evidence shows increasing our fibre intake by just 7g per day T: 01778 382762 | August 2017

is linked with reduced risk of heart attack, stroke and type 2 diabetes. So take stock of what you eat now and see how you can boost the fibre. One small step is better than no step at all.
If you have any medical conditions that affect your bowel, please speak with your GP, consultant or dietitian before making any changes to the fibre content in your diet.

FOCUSED ON Help your teens realise the best version of themselves.
H
appy teens should make happy and well-adjusted adults, and that is the aim of these Focused on Teens sessions. Focused on Teens sessions aim to help teens and their parents understand how the brain works, why teenagers seem to have a personality change, appear lazy, clumsy and incommunicative. It’s not all just about hormones. On top of this they are evolving into adults, becoming independent and whether they want to or not having to make decisions for themselves and sometimes, to us parents, these seem daft. They are also learning a whole new range of skills such as driving, interacting with superior figures such as potential bosses, interacting socially with new and expanding groups of friends, trying out new activities, going to new places; in effect spreading their wings and becoming independent. Secondly, the sessions will explore subjects like posture, nutrition, exercise, fitness and how these have an impact on teens’ ongoing growth and development and where to start. Thirdly, social skills, study techniques, how to relax and reboot the system, how to deal with stress, how to overcome nerves, how to stay safe, how to be
s n tee
confident in their own decisions, how to stay calm when they feel they want to run from the situation and to make a proper decision of what is right for that situation (and that just might be to run). Overall Focused on Teens sessions will help teens to realise the best version of themselves that they can possibly be and to enjoy the process. Classes will start in earnest in September watch for advertisements to confirm date, time and location. The evenings for 12-19 year olds and parents will be run and led by Bridget Bath BSc(hons)chiro, DC; HPD,DSFH. Bridget holds an Enhanced DRB certificate and is registered with the General Chiropractic Council and the National Council of Hypnotherapy.

KALM KIDZZ Clinical hypnotherapist Nicole Woodcock helps children to overcome issues they face in day-to-day life.
K
alm Kidzz is a weekly 45-minute class for children aged 6-11. The classes are aimed at young people who struggle with anxiety, stress and day-to-day worry. Children are becoming increasingly more anxious in different situations – displaying behaviour and emotion that can mean that they are under stress and need a way to release and let off steam. The session involves explanation about how the brain works. When children know how things work they can then understand which part of the brain looks after them when they are feeling anxious, stressed or angry. Using hypnotherapy techniques and positive conversation enables the brain to relax. Each session always begins with “what’s been good?” Positive reflection on the week’s achievements boosts the brains serotonin, allowing relaxation and a happy boost. We then lay down and focus on the things that make us happy. Creating a comfortable zone with the added benefits of cloud cushions, fluffy blankets and sensory toys.
We all then relax to calming music while listening to positive storytelling. Floating away on fluffy clouds, taking magic carpet rides through rainbows and enjoying fun journeys allowing the body and mind to enter into the daydream state known as trance. The session is concluded with happy smiles and sleepy faces before heading home. Sessions are booked in term time blocks. Every new child can come with a parent and pay £6 for a one-off session. Head to Kalm Kidzz on Facebook to find out about our August holiday workshops. Two hours of creative learning to acknowledge our feelings followed by cookies and hot chocolate, concluded with half an hour of positive relaxation and time out. £12 per session.

IF THE
Shoes that are too big can do as much damage as those that are too small.
A
ll the shoe-fitters at John Lewis Peterborough are professionally trained by either Clarks or Start-rite and they can advise you on the best shoe style and brand for your child. Up to the age of four, your child’s feet can grow by two sizes a year, and by the time they start school this will slow to one size a year. This is why regular checks (every six to eight weeks) are vital to aid rapidly developing feet and to avoid problems later in life. The shoe-fitters will measure the length and width of both feet, and select a choice of shoes for your child to try on to find which style best suits their foot shape. FITTING AND MEASURING AT HOME
If you think your child has had a growth spurt, pop into our children’s shoe department for staff to check, or you can do this at home. The general rule is that if a child’s foot is right up to the end of the shoe, it’s too small. There should be 10mm of space between the toes and the front of the shoe in pre-walkers, and 14mm space in walkers. John Lewis sells a measuring gauge, which you can use at home. There are two gauges, a small gauge, which measures 2 to 8.5 junior, and the large gauge, which measures 9 junior upwards. Remember though, that shoes that are too big can do as much damage as those that are too small, so unlike clothing, it’s not a good idea to buy shoes they can grow into. John Lewis is offering a timed booking service on Friday evenings with a schoolwear adviser during the back-to-school period. The appointments are on Fridays: 4, 11 and 18 August. Time slots are 6-7pm and 7-8pm. This also includes shoe fitting. Make an appointment in the store or call 01733 344644 and ask to speak to a member of the childenswear team. S
olar panels are now a common sight on many properties, with homeowners using the electricity created to cut their bills and generate a tax-free income from the electricity going back to the grid. Although the Government incentives have been reduced, so have installation costs. In fact, we can now install a 4kWh system from £4,800. On average this will still get you a rather healthy 10% return on your investment. The technology is advancing all the time, and with the addition of system optimisers we can help you get even more from your solar PV system. These inexpensive add-ons help to combat shading issues, and can even provide hot water from the electricity you are not using in your home already. BATTERY STORAGE
We are currently fitting new PV systems with battery storage from £7,000. What’s more – with the new range of AC connected batteries, you don’t even need solar panels to make battery storage work for you. New generation home batteries can now be connected to your mains power, which, if you are an economy seven tariff user, means you can charge your battery overnight at the cheaper rate and then use the power during the day. If you do have solar panels, or are thinking of installing them, then these batteries can also be connected to your solar PV system, meaning you can be topping up from solar during the day and cheap rate mains power during the night. If you are considering fitting solar panels, or would like to explore battery storage or other enhancements then please get in touch.
One of the latest innovations in the domestic solar market is battery storage. This gives you even greater savings as you can store the energy generated by your solar panels during the day and use it at night. This can almost eliminate your reliance on the grid.

Peterborough Energy celebrates with 7,000 users. eterborough Energy is celebrating its second birthday with a fantastic present – the 7,000th local household switching to its competitive fuel tariff. Customers can make annual savings of around £122. So, in total, the Peterborough residents who have swapped tariffs have made a collective saving of nearly £1.4 million.
Councillor John Holdich, Leader of Peterborough City Council, said: “This is a great birthday present for Peterborough Energy. “I hope even more residents will consider making the switch, which is simple and can be done entirely online, although for anyone who would prefer to speak to a customer service representative switches can be arranged by phone or during a home visit.”

l a n o i s s e f o Pr SERVICE HOME & GARDEN
Interior designers are not just for the wealthy says Rachel Grant.
W
hen designing a room or project remember that no two spaces are the same. You need to factor in lighting, the age of the property, style of the rest of the house and you need to be spatially aware. Your home should flow seamlessly from room to room, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t experiment with different colours, textures and styles. Coax yourself out of your comfort zone and go for a statement wall or a bold pattern and have some fun with your interiors. If you’re not feeling brave enough to attempt something permanent, opt for a fairly neutral base and be experimental with replacement items like cushions or decorative accessories. You want your home to be a reflection of you and not a carbon copy of the local shop display. That’s why choosing an interior design service allows you access to a huge range of items that the market isn’t overly populated with and gives you fresh design inspiration. There is a common misconception that using an interior design service will cost a fortune. While there are high-end options, there are also plenty of high-quality choices with
36
36-37 Hunters.indd 36
affordable price tags. Taking on a whole project without any help from a professional is hard work and time consuming. Designing a scheme doesn’t just involve paint, wallpaper and fabric, there’s aspects to consider like lighting, furniture, flooring and accessories, which all have to complement one another. Using an interior design company means you have access to every element of your project in one place, which will save you time and a lot of stress. August 2017 | E: info@scenepublishing.co.uk

Statement pieces
Here are some of our top interior design tips.
1
Textures, patterns, old and new, expensive and inexpensive – absolutely mix and match!
2
Use decorative mirrors to create the feeling of light and space – it’s a simple and cost-effective trick. For larger rooms, or a room with a more limited amount of natural light, place mirrors directly across from the windows to add instant light. T: 01778 382762 | August 2017
36-37 Hunters.indd 37
3
An unconsidered arrangement of furniture is a frequent mistake; a poor seating and furniture arrangement or over cluttering can really affect the flow in both a practical and aesthetic manner. Don’t be tempted to use an existing piece of furniture to cut down on costs when you know it doesn’t work.
4
Don’t match your colours to the exact shade – it looks too contrived. Use colours from the
same palette with similar hues, it will add warmth, depth and interest to your room.
5
Use the rule of multiples. This can be anything from a cluster of lights, plants or mirrors. It’s a way to make a big design impact without having to shell out the price for one large piece.

August’s jobs in the garden
A
ugust usually brings plenty of opportunity to relax and enjoy the garden, but there are jobs still to be done to keep it looking good.
Ladybirds
Lawns
Ladybirds are an attractive sight in the garden, and are natural predators of aphids like greenfly, blackfly and whitefly. So here’s a simple tip to help your plants to survive and thrive – when you see a ladybird in the garden, pick it up and place it in your
40
40-41 Garden Tips.indd 40
greenhouse or on your roses, fruit trees or anything you’re worried about. It will make itself at home in no time and hungrily devour the pests. And you can attract more ladybirds with a Ladybird tower or a bug box.
If you would like a fine finish to your lawn then cut more than once a week. Any weeds should be removed and, if required, the holes filled with gritty compost followed by a small amount of grass seed raked in. When the weather is dry and hot, grass should be kept slightly longer by setting the mower blades a little higher. Prepare sites for new lawns, as the end of the month and early September are ideal times for sowing. Where perennial weeds are growing on the site, spray with a weedkiller containing glyphosate some weeks before commencing soil cultivations. This will allow any re-growth to be treated for a second time.

Vegetables
As many varieties of peas and beans come to fruition, the challenge for gardeners is to replace them with some more productive plants so consider onion sets or garlic. Sowings can also be made of spring cabbage, chinese cabbage, corn salad, winter lettuce and radish. As you lift your potatoes, why not replace them with late season potatoes, which will give you a second crop in October. The tips of any climbing shoots of runner beans should be pinched out when they reach the top of the supports. Water well any crops that are in flower, or have fruit or pods on them. The side-shoots on tomatoes should be pinched out regularly and the leading shoots tied to the supports. Apply a high potash tomato fertiliser feed weekly.
Flowers Some hardy annuals like calendula, eschscholzia and myosotis can be sown direct in their flowering positions for early flowers next spring/summer. Seeds of perennial plants that can be sown now include cheiranthus (siberian wallflower), cyclamen hederifolium and potentilla. Feverfew and field cornflower can be sown where they are required to flower. Wild flowers are becoming popular and sowings of cowslips

and primroses should be made in trays, and placed in a cold frame. Deadhead roses regularly, and trim flowers just above the top leaf on the stem. Stem cuttings can also be taken for propagating. Now is a good time for cutting plants such as achillea grasses as they are at their peak. They should be hung upside down in an airy, warm place so that they can dry naturally ready for using in arrangements.

PENSIONS, PENSIONS,
PENSIONS
I
t must feel like we keep talking about pensions and, to be fair, we do! The rules around pensions have changed significantly over the last few years, and will have a major impact both on how you save for retirement and access your money once you retire. The new pension rules have given people far more choice over what they can do with their pension pots. Historically, most retired people could take up to 25% of their pension as tax-free cash and the rest had to be turned into a retirement income by buying an annuity. Now, there are several ways you can now use your pension pot. You can: Take tax-free cash from your pension. Take additional cash sums from your pension when you want them. Take all your pension as cash in one go. Buy a guaranteed income for life – an annuity.
Thinking about your pension options? Contact our office for a FREE initial consultation. T 01778 342291 W liberty-partnership. co.uk
Invest your pension in funds designed to provide you with a flexible retirement income – called ‘drawdown’ (the income is not guaranteed for life). Mix the above options. You will need to consider your tax position. If you take cash out of your pension then 25% of the withdrawal is likely to be tax-free (the other 75% is the taxable element). The taxable element is added to the rest of your income for the year and you pay Income Tax on this in the usual way. If you take a large sum of cash you could push your income into a higher tax bracket and end up paying higher-rate or even additional-rate Income Tax on the lump sum. This increase in income may also mean you are no longer eligible for certain benefits you’re claiming.

ress codes are often used by employers to ensure workers are safe and dressed appropriately. However, dress codes may constitute acts of either direct or indirect discrimination particularly if based on the employee’s protected characteristic of sex, race or religious belief. SOME THINGS
NEVER CHANGE... R eading the latest issue of the scene I was amazed to read it had been going for 10 years. I am pretty sure we advertised in the first issue and have done ever since. The 10-year anniversary prompted me to look back on everything I have said over the years – 120 columns and counting. And, my first submission was about Wills. WE ARE ALL GOING TO DIE
The only certainties in life are death and taxes – we pay tax all of our lives because we have no choice, but death is a different matter. The plain fact is that nobody plans for death – quite frankly we are scared of it. Everyone should have a Will yet two thirds of people don’t, and those that do rarely review it. So let’s look at the common objections against making a Will. If I die my husband/wife gets everything – not true. This is the most common reason that people don’t make a Will; they assume their spouse will automatically inherit everything that they own. If you own anything in your own name (and you will) you need to make a will. I don’t own anything to give away – this is the second most common reason for not making a Will, but your Will does so much more than give things
away. It appoints people you trust to look after your children. It appoints people you trust to deal with your affairs. It appoints people you trust to deal with your funeral and leaves your instructions for the day. It can save on tax, and in some cases protect your spouse against things like future care fees. My kids will know what to do so I don’t need a Will – they might well know what you want but without a Will the laws of intestacy may prevent them from carrying out your wishes. We are not married so we don’t need a Will – unmarried couple living together need a Will. Unmarried partners cannot inherit off each other. Unmarried fathers may not automatically get parental supervision if your child’s mother dies. Unmarried couples also receive the least favourable Inheritance Tax treatment under current law. The bottom line is that we all need to make a Will, so pick up the phone today and make an appointment.

Takeaway for canny beer lovers. here is a fantastic new way for lovers of real ale to enjoy their favourite Oakham Ales brew thanks to a great deal between the brewery and Marks & Spencer. The retailing giant has launched a canned version of the popular Citra IPA, which is being brewed exclusively for the company by Peterborough-based Oakham Ales. The 500ml can contains the 4.9%ABV ale, which is liveried under the Cambridgeshire banner of Single Variety American Hop Citra IPA. The range is a natural progression from the bottled Citra, which Oakham Ales has been producing for Marks and Spencer since 2013. The popular bottled version is still available 2 to customers, as is the double-hopped version at 5.9%, which Oakham Ales also brews exclusively for the retailer in 330ml bottles. 2

Music is important to my driving experience, and this trendy, goodlooking, smart, fast and totally regenerated beauty has BOSE speakers (standard on Tekna Models) placed in the driver and front passenger headrests as well as around the car. The drive is exciting, this car just wants to go, and with its balance of manoeuvrability and refinement it’s perfection. A smart central console is easily navigable and
incorporates satnav, phone connectivity, messages and music. Available in some statement colours like Passion Red or Power Blue, this car is designed to catch the eye of young adult drivers, and is reasonably priced. I had a great driving experience both in and out of town and I especially appreciated its reverse parking camera. Prices start from £11,995 for the basic model.

Ordnance and they advanced to Burghley House. Beginning their attack at 2am they shot for upward of three hours, but didn’t break through – the house was too strong. A parley was suggested offering the Royalists to ‘have Life and Liberty by departing without their weapons’. The Royalists refused saying they would neither take – nor give – quarter. The fight continued, but by early afternoon their spirits began to fail them and they sought a parley. The Parliamentarian Colonel commanded that none of his men should dare to shoot or kill any man during the parley upon pain of death. Following a parley the Colonel took all of them – two Colonels; six or seven Captains; 300 to 400 foot soldiers and upwards of 200 horses together with the Royalists’ weapons. It was claimed that no more than six or seven men were killed although many were hurt during the battle.
ing Charles had dissolved Parliament in 1629 and embarked on 11 years of personal rule. However, a Scottish revolt in 1639, an Irish rebellion in 1640 and discord in Parliament prompted Charles to go to Nottingham in August 1642, to raise the Royal Standard as a call to arms against the Parliamentary forces. It was a point of no return for both sides. Sunday 19 July 1643 saw the Royalists defeated at Peterborough and retreat to Stamford. Two days later they attacked Burghley House – a house in mourning as David Cecil, the third Earl, had died three months previously on 18 April 1643. It is record that: “Getting within the Park Walls, for it is walled round with a stone wall, they made that their sanctuary so for that time the war ceased for the Colonel had few foot soldiers and no Ordnance. RIDE THE
RAILS Local historians and authors June and Vernon Bull reveal how Peterborough ran on rails.
P
ublic wheeled transport had been in the city from the late 1850s as the GNR established rail works in New England and wagonettes were used between New England and the Market Place (now Cathedral Square) on market days and at weekends. Horse drawn trams and tramline routes were discussed at a council meeting in 1880 but were never begun. In 1896 horse drawn omnibuses were introduced, and the Peterborough Omnibus Company worked on routes between Long Causeway, Werrington, New England, Woodston, Fletton, Stanground, Farcet and Longthorpe. Stabling was in Evan’s Yard off St John’s Street. Each bus had eight horses
for a day’s work with the pairs changing every two hours. The British Electric Traction (BET) Company Ltd (the largest group in Britain) applied to the Light Railway Commissioners to run light railways in the Soke of Peterborough, City of Peterborough and in Woodston. In 1899 powers were granted for tramlines to Walton, Dogsthorpe, Newark, Woodston and Stanground but a line to Stanground and a circular route to Woodston were refused because Narrow Bridge Street was too narrow, as its name suggests, and because of difficulties in crossing the Great Eastern Railway line on the same level. Each bus had eight horses for a day’s work with the pairs changing every two hours. the tramway began on 12 May 1902 by contractor J G White and Company Ltd. The track was 3ft 6in wide and was laid as a single line with passing places to take two tram cars. Peterborough’s electric tramway system was a comparatively small one with a maximum of 14 cars and a track watering car, which could also be used as a snow plough. In autumn 1902, the local press was invited to view the first tramcar at the BET Company depot on Lincoln Road. The 3ft 6in gauge overhead wire system opened on 24 January 1903 between Walton and Long Causeway with a route to Dogsthorpe following a week later. Newark was reached on 28 March 1903 with a total route length of 5 miles. The depot

and offices were built in Lincoln Road at a cost of £3,000. The depot comprised of five roads that converged to a single line junction in Lincoln Road facing the city. The points themselves were unusual – they were changed by railway type point levers. The cars were all open topped, and supplied by BET at Loughborough and equipped with two motors, each with 17hp to cover the city’s level terrain. The first 12 tramcars seated 22 passengers inside and 26 outside (on top deck) on traversable wooden garden type seats. Cars 14 and 15 (there was no number 13) were acquired in 1905 and could accommodate 28 on top. The tramcar livery was lake brown and cream. During WW1 women and temporary drivers were recruited as in other towns and T: 01778 382762 | August 2017

cities. During the General Strike of 1926 the trams stopped completely. In 1930 BET Co Ltd approached the city council to abandon the trams altogether and the last tram to run was on 15 November 1930 with 10 passengers. Double decker buses took over the various routes. In the 27 years of service the trams travelled 6-7 million miles and carried more than 50 million passengers. By the early 1970s all traces of tram standards had gone and the depot in Lincoln Road became a bus depot. The local press reported the demise of the city

trams as: “Our famous trams are no more. They came heralded by the whole populace. They went unhonoured and unsung” plus “The trams have all gone to the Big Depot in the Sky”. It is interesting that in more modern times there has been a real resurgence of trams in various cities and towns because of their economy and environmental friendliness

PLANET B Peterborough unites to show that understanding and caring for the environment is vitally important.
P
eterborough is home to one of the largest Green Festivals in the UK, and this year it takes on a new life as Planet B. Planet B encompasses a two-week programme of events, performances, film screenings, workshops, commissioned artworks and a conference – all around encouraging discussion and debate on sustainability. The environmental charity PECT, working alongside arts organisation Metal and The Green Backyard and with funding from Arts Council England, will be running Planet B from Saturday 29 July through to Saturday 12 August. The environment is a huge subject that can often
feel hard to get to grips with, but Planet B is asking: “What needs to happen for people to understand the issues, become more resilient together and take positive actions?” Planet B will look at the key themes of how communities can become more adaptable, what lifestyles and habits we need to change, and how we can learn from the past.

Keep the kids happy, and occupied, in the summer holidays.
J
uly sees the start of that long expanse of child entertaining time known as the summer holidays. This can be a bittersweet time, mainly depending on the weather, available funds and ages of your children. Although we all love to spend more time with our children as they grow so quickly and time flies past, we also secretly wonder how we will survive what feels like an eternity without running out of things to do with the kids.
INTERNET POWER Get on the internet, diary in hand and check out the local events. Peterborough Museum always has activities during the holidays and it’s free. Nene Park has a diary of events from pond dipping and den building to nature walks and crafting sessions. There is sometimes a small charge, but it’s always reasonable. Netmums is a useful tool too.

STRENGTH IN NUMBERS Firstly, get your friends together to co-ordinate calendars. There’s strength in numbers! Arrange a weekly trip to the local park, the woods or even your own gardens. Kids easily bore of their siblings’ company (or parents), but get them all together and they generally find plenty of things to play and tell their friends. It also gives you a chance for some adult time to chat to other parents while your little ones let off steam.
Get active GET CRAFTY
FIRE YOUR IMAGINATION Pinterest has a plethora of children’s crafts for when the weather is not so good, but for when it is fine outdoors, get their little pulses up with a regular exercise session. It helps them relax, focus and burn off energy while soaking up some vitamin D. Here is a little exercise list for those budding Olympians. Don’t forget to stretch first! Jumping jack

Now you should only have two or three days a week to keep them happy. You could start a project, like hatching your own butterfly (kits available online); or a scrapbook of places you’ve been or things you’ve done during the holidays; or start a huge lego construction using every available piece.

range of music, dance and theatre will add an extra cultural twist to this year’s Peterborough Italian Festival. New additions to the line-up includes music and dance from Laboratorio Orafolk, who are coming all the way from Deliceto in the province of Foggia, and captivating theatre from Shakespeare in Italy with its performance Aliens Order. Classic pieces from Italian opera will be sung by Davide Sorrentino, Giuseppe Barile and Teresa De Roberto. There will also be wine making, Italian cakes from bakers such as La Rondini and pizza from a range of specialist vendors. The Mediterranean extravaganza, organised by Peterborough’s Italian Community Association and supported by the city council, will also feature an Italian market, confectionery, ice-cream, pasta, football and boxing demonstrations and classic Italian cars, motorcycles and scooters. The festival runs on Heritage Open Day weekend and there will be an exhibition celebrating Peterborough’s London Brick heritage at St John the Baptist Church in Church Street on the Saturday.
