o New Year magazine could possibly be complete without a dedicated section all about health, well-being, fitness and change. We have teamed up with some local experts that have kindly given us their top tips, help and support to guide us how to not only make the right changes but to ensure that we stick with them to have a positive impact on our lives. DSA fitness talks about setting achievable goals, Bev Brabbins from Newborough Dental shows us non-invasive rejuvenating facial treatments and Nicola from Hummingbird Hypnotherapy and Kalm Kidz explains about the importance of changing your mindset. All this as well as an amazing competition from Fiona from Arbonne who is giving away beauty products worth ÂŁ300! We also introduce a new beauty retreat called Homefields, which offers spa break packages that include relaxing, detoxing and mindfulness. So once you have grasped 2018 by the proverbial horns and put in place your plans to improve your lifestyle without compromising on having a life, check out the new shows and day trips on offer with Shaws Coaches and the newly refurbed Bull in Market Deeping. THE LEAN PANTRY Following great success with her first cafe in Oakham, The Lean Pantry founder Seema Khanna opened the doors to her Stamford cafe last summer and has been pulling in the crowds since. Wholesome, nutrientdense breakfasts and lunches are freshly prepared on-site and served alongside smoothies, protein shakes and a selection of tempting treats that you can enjoy guilt-free, like the vegan

millionaire’s shortbread made with chestnut and quinoa flours, coconut and almond butter and cacao. Coffee, tea and chai/ matcha lattes are served with dairy milk alternatives and sweetened with coconut sugar, and there are a number of raw, organic goodies (including lots of chocolate) to enjoy in store or to take away, as well as pantry style shelves loaded with goodies for those with special dietary requirements.

THE STAMFORD DELI Kelly’s deli, with its truly tempting array of homemade cakes, bakes, quiches and sausage rolls might not be the first place you’d think of visiting for a healthy lunch on the go, but the Deli also serves a fantastic selection of freshly made sandwiches stuffed full of delicious, yummy fillings, freshly made seasonal soups, savoury flapjacks and salads that are packed full of greens, grains, fruit, vegetables, nuts and seeds. The selection changes frequently and there are always new items appearing on the shelves.

Boost

Ease yourself back into a healthy eating regime with a delicious juice or smoothie from Boost in Queensgate Shopping centre. You can turn the feel-good dial up a notch further by adding a booster supplement, with specially blended ingredients to help build immunity, increase dietary fibre, increase energy and to help detox the body. Boost’s breakfast smoothie – a satisfying wheat-free muesli based drink blended with banana, milk, yoghurt and honey – is an incredibly satisfying way to start the day, while juices with hidden vegetables in (spinach, beetroot, carrots, celery) are a great way to get little ones eating more of the good stuff without even realising.

popped into Samba Brazil while out shopping in the City Centre, as I had heard about this new Rodizio experience everyone was talking about. Once seated you are invited to partake in the open salad buffet, which is available to eat with an array of BBQ meats. You have a choice of a four or eight-meat experience; I went for the four meat as it was only lunchtime. The first meat was pork, which is carved from a skewer by a very talented chef. While tucking into this, the next meat arrived – also on a skewer. The chef sliced off a couple of pieces of beef – just like the pork, was fantastic, melt in the mouth. The owner Paul told me the beef is imported from Argentina, and well worth it, there is nowhere else in

RODIZIO

town that serves Argentinean beef. The third meat was Argentine sausages – spicy and meaty, with that authentic BBQ taste, followed by chicken wings. However, I was treated to another meat delight after that – garlic infused beef, which was outstanding. Definitely worth the impulse to pop in. Loved it!

T

he Bull in Market Deeping has reopened after a total refurbishment, transforming what was a dark and dated old man’s pub into a bright, cosy bar-come-brasserie with a contemporary country feel – a far more inviting affair for locals and visitors alike. The Bull’s landlord Richard Parrot has kept the selection of real ales, has added more fine wines and extended the gin menu with complementing tonics. Richard (landlord and head chef) took on The Bull 18 months ago and has been steadily working on its makeover since, and although the pub retains the character and charm of its 16th century coaching inn beginnings, the removal of an imposing staircase, and an extension at the back of the pub which now

14

The Bull in Market Deeping has been refurbished but retains its old-world charm houses the kitchen, has opened up the interior, making lots more room for both drinkers and diners. There were certainly a lot of people taking advantage of the pub’s generously portioned and well-priced lunches on our visit. Sandwiches and jacket potatoes start at £4.95, and pub classics such as lasagne, fish and chips, and sausage and mash come in at £8.95, making this is a great

place to come for a well-priced meal. To start, I chose the chicken liver pate served with onion marmalade and toast, before tucking into a fabulous steak and Tiger ale pie served with mash and peas; the beef was really well cooked – tender and fall apart – with a rich, flavourful gravy. Heidi opted for the perfectly crisp tempura battered squid rings, served with fresh salad

FOOD & DRINK and sweet chilli sauce, followed by a rich chicken jalfrezi served with rice, poppadom and mango chutney. The Bull also serves breakfasts (full English £7.95), coffees and teas – which can be enjoyed on comfy sofas next to the roaring log burner – and roast dinners from 12-6pm on Sundays, which I hear are quite the crowdpullers! If you pop in to The Bull, make sure you have a look around – there’s an interesting medieval dugout to the left of the bar which has been turned into a gin bar.

Don’t set yourself up to fail – be realistic.

C

hristmas day for many is the epitomy of a cheat day; a free pass to eat and drink what we like on the promise and belief that next year we are going to make a change for good and lose weight. No doubt many of you toasted with your nearest and dearest at midnight on New Year’s Eve and made that secret resolution with the hope that this New Year will see a new you! How many of you felt this overwhelming inflexible year-long goal feel like a ball and chain after a week and gave up (joining the 25% of people who make New Year’s resolutions and give up after a week? We make resolutions to motivate ourselves BUT rely heavily on

willpower and self-control to stick to them and this is the first mistake! Relying on willpower alone often results in burn out and failure. These are my tips on how to make this year a different one, one where you finally achieve your goals and succeed. ■ Firstly, don’t rely on willpower! Evidence shows success comes from establishing habits rather than relying on self-control; habits can create a system to help you stick to your goal. For example, instead of struggling to avoid temptation at the local coffee shop offer to host the coffee morning at yours and be

in control of what to offer. ■ Set small goals. Once you put a year-long date stamp on your goal it can feel overwhelming, unrealistic and inflexible, which is likely to make you more likely to quit. Setting weekly goals or focusing on one behaviour at a time can feel more realistic and achievable eg set time aside during the week such as a Sunday to plan meals or timetable exercise into the week ahead. ■ Find the right goal for the right time. Goals are about improving yourself and this should be something that comes from intrinsic motivation that you want to do for yourself. If you believe in the goal, then you will stick with your goal because you don’t need anyone else to notice. You will notice and that’s all that matters. Setting yourself goals because “you must” because it’s a New Year can lead to failures and feelings of inadequacy. ■ Be SMART with your goals. When making goals be Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time Specific eg replace “I’m going to eat healthier” with “I’m going to eat wholegrain cereals at breakfast” ■ Find a buddy. Life is so much easier (and fun) with a friend!

LUCKY

Seven tips to lose seven pounds in seven days

KEEP BUSY

EAT LITTLE AND OFTEN

When dieting, people often think they should starve themselves resulting in constant hunger and resentment of the regime they are following. Instead, you should eat regularly (every two to three hours) lowering portion sizes. Eating is actually the best way to assist with weight loss!

EAT FRESH PRODUCE There’s no excuse not to eat fresh with supermarket shelves stacked with lots of fresh ingredients and pre-made fresh on the go snacks. Try apple slices dunked in organic peanut butter. However, remember snacks like this must be consumed in moderation.

T: 01778 382762 | January 2018

17 Lose 7lb.indd 17

Hunger is often confused with boredom. You go without food for two hours and dwell on how much you miss it. Stop! You are bored not hungry. Keep busy and stay focused, also ensure you stick to it and don’t give up.

UP YOUR DAILY STEPS

Add extra distance to your exercise – upping your steps by as little as 200 steps a day can help you burn the pounds off without going to the gym. If you’re a keen jogger, push yourself and go that extra distance. Keep out of your comfort zone!

REMOVE SUGAR AND EXCESS CAFFEINE

STAY HYDRATED Drink lots of water and stay hydrated as this will keep you feeling fuller for longer and you will also benefit from clearing out toxins leaving you with fresh unblemished skin.

REPLACE DENSE CARBS FOR SEEDS AND ALTERNATIVES Eat sweet potatoes and quinoa. They are so simple to make and you still feel full without suffering from a carb overload.

Adding sugar to drinks, cereals and meals is a no-no. Most of these already have a high sugar content so they don’t need any extra.

PURE SAFE AND

Hello and happy 2018 to all you lovely readers!

I

sn’t it funny how 1 January, is really no different to 1 December, except it’s our perceptions that allow us to get excited for new beginnings, fresh start – revitalising, rejuvenating, renewing –all the REs, which reminds us of our RE9 Advanced anti-ageing skincare line. These revolutionary and unparalleled products, improve the appearance of skin radiance, elasticity, firmness and texture while minimising the appearance of wrinkles by conditioning the skin. You may be wondering, what makes these product’s so good? Arbonne, a 37-year old, botanically based, vegan Swiss skincare company and has always been unparalleled in the marketplace. Why? We

18

18-19 Arbonne.indd 18

have never tested on animals and have prohibited many ingredients. Our products contain no animal products or by-products, no synthetic dyes, no artificial fragrances, no mineral oil, no formaldehydedonating preservatives, no sodium laureth sulfates (SLES), no sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), no petrolatum, no parabens, to name a few. Our products are also pH correct, gluten and wheat free and have a carbon neutral shipment. You must be wondering what a paraben is? A paraben is a synthetic preservative that enhances the shelf life of a product for up to seven years. It is also carcinogenic, it mimics oestrogen and has been linked to breast and ovarian cancer. It will be at the bottom of an ingredient list, as it is a preservative, January 2018 | E: info@scenepublishing.co.uk

the most common names are propylparaben and butylparaben. Mineral oil, is also another ingredient to watch out for, the word mineral sounds lovely doesn’t it, though unfortunately mineral oil is a by-product of the petrol chemical industry – you wouldn’t drink petrol, would you? As your skin is your largest, living, breathing organ, each pore is like a mouth breathing, continually detoxifying. Mineral oil wraps around the skin like clingfilm, clogging the pores, which slows the skin’s ability to eliminate toxins and at the same time leaches water and vitamins from your skin, T: 01778 382762 | January 2018

ageing your skin. Mineral oil will appear, around the third ingredient on an ingredient list as liquid paraffin, paraffinum liquidum and liquid petroleum. Our mantra is pure, safe and beneficial and having just explained what pure and safe stands for – beneficial means active ingredients, your products have to actually do something. Due to our clinically tested trials, we have incredible testimonials, including last month’s article written by Dee Kennedy, after trialling our superior products. I am super excited to be giving joy all year round and to offer you, the chance to win a whole skincare range, worth £299, how remarkable is that? See page 21.

W

hile reviewing the RE9 anti-ageing products, I was also given the new Arbonne Genius Ultra to review alongside the products. Genius Ultra is an ultrasound skincare device that works in alliance with the Arbonne skin products. The Genius Ultra gently warms at the tip, while massaging the product on the outer layers of the skin. I used this for a week as part of my regime as seen in my December review, and the difference in just three days was outstanding. Fine lines around my eyes improved, giving me a For more smoother looking skin. I information on also used it around my Arbonne products upper lip and this too please email began to smooth out fiona.mccarthy@ over the three days. myarbonne.co.uk

The Genius not only warms, but pulsates which helps to penetrate the skin layers so that the product actually goes deeper than normally applied products. For best results you should use for at least 30 days, but I found after one week I could already see a smoother looking face in the mirror. Now I know why it’s called Genius!

MAKE THIS YOUR

Hi, and a happy New Year!

Have you already started with good intentions? Ditched the alcohol, sugar, cigarettes and opted for a healthier 2018?

Or, are you the “It’s okay, I will wait till I have eaten everything leftover from Christmas and start on Monday, it should all be gone by then”? With all the best intentions, will power and motivation did you know that 43% of adults who make a New Year’s resolution based on a healthier lifestyle, diet or exercise break them within a month. That’s nearly half! So, how can you succeed? Make that change and turn 2018 into your best year yet!

Charge up your mindset

Hypnotherapy increases your chances of not only sticking to a new diet or health programme but can also boost your confidence, self esteem and general self care, resulting in a more positive outlook, increased well-being and greater prospects of achievement. Over the last year I have thoroughly enjoyed being part of my clients’ journeys. Whether they chose to give up smoking, beat anxiety or decided to become healthier. The greatest change has to be a client who gave up a diet coke addiction. She spent on average £45 a week on diet coke. Starting with a glass after the school run and running up to four litres a day. We worked together for five weeks in total and on returning for her sixth session, she had cracked it. Not only did she beat her demon but she also lost weight, gained a better grip on her lifestyle, had more energy and began to enjoy life without diet coke controlling her .

When our brain is in a position of control we can direct ourselves to achieve whatever we want. But, once our primitive brain kicks in and our stress levels increase we can lose intellectual control resulting in those choices that aren’t beneficial for us or returning to previous negative thought patterns, habits and behaviours. At Hummingbird Hypnotherapy I work with clients from the age of six to my eldest currently being 83, dealing with repetitive habits, smoking cessation to eating difficulties, anxiety and depression. As a trained solution-focused hypnotherapist I work with clients to focus on their positive attributes working towards that positive goal and

creating a brighter future. I also run a weekly relaxation class for children aged six to 11 called Kalm Kidzz – fun half an hour of positive reflection on the week and relaxation designed to reduce worry and concern and promote a healthy sleep pattern. For further information on Hummingbird Hypnotherapy and the classes I offer please go to hummingbirdhypnotherapy.co.uk or find me on Facebook at Hummingbird Hypnotherapy and Kalm Kidzz.

Newborough Cosmetic Skin Clinic offers non-invasive treatments giving amazing results says Bev Brabbins

O

ur skin clinic offers a wide variety of skin treatments particularly suited to clients who are either reluctant to have injectables or who want to optimise the result of injectable treatments. As well as the pHformula facials, which optimise the homecare product results to improve acne, pigmentation, chronic redness and ageing, the innovative LED light fusion facials are now available. LED PHOTO FACIAL

The LED photo facial is an advanced light therapy using natural visible red light wavelengths to restore cell processes, promoting collagen activity in the skin to soften lines, improve hydration, skin tone and brighten the complexion of the skin. Results are seen after a single treatment session and after a course of a recommended four treatments, clinical studies show deeper wrinkle reduction, longer lasting results, including wrinkle reduction and improved elasticity. LED light facial promotes the body’s own natural healing response, so it is often used either before or after invasive treatments such as injectables and PLEXR and significantly reduces the associated downtime. SKIN CONSULTATION

When a client attends for a skin consultation, all concerns regarding their skin are discussed.

Before and after treatment Treatment of the skin including the use of medical grade skin products such as a pHformula which hydrates the skin by 112%, are often essential, as dehydration in itself can make the skin look dull and result in fine, medium or even deep wrinkles. PHformula, as well as treating ageing skin, tackles other problems including pigmentation, rosacea and acne. The pHformula has a patented delivery system, which transports essential ingredients across the dead layers of the skin to the living layer, called the dermis, where its effects can transform your skin. Basically if your skin creams are not medical grade they are sitting on the dead layer of the skin and are in fact pointless.

SUN PROTECTION

We also recommend our clients use an SPF of factor 30 to 50 daily to protect their skin from UVA and UVB rays in summer and winter alike. The FDA notes that skin damage from sunlight accumulates with continued exposure, whether sunburn occurs or not. In addition to skin cancer and sunburn, other effects of UV ray exposure includes premature ageing, wrinkling and a leathery appearance. Research also suggests that excessive exposure to UV rays may interfere with the body’s immune system. PHformula has SPF50, which is safer than other SPF50 products on the market as most of these contain chemicals harmful to the skin. Clinical research has endorsed the efficacy of the consumption of daily skin supplements. In line with this, Newborough cosmetic skin clinic offers a variety of theses including pHformula skin supplements (in capsule form), Totally derma pharma grade anti-ageing skin drink and Forever Living Aloe Vera products, which include a wide range of nutritional supplements tackling the root cause of ageing in the deep layers of the skin. The cosmetic industry is booming and advancing rapidly. Both I and my beauty therapist, Jenna Browne are continually undergoing training in new products in order to be able to offer our clients the most innovative and up-to-date treatments.

FAT

Get back in shape and stay trim with Renu

I

t might be considered attractive for Santa to have a big belly, but not many of us chuckle “Ho! Ho! Ho!” when we look at our reflection. In fact for many of us belly fat is the single biggest cause for complaint about our bodies. So why is it that so many of us gather inches around our middle and what can be done to improve our body shape? Christmas is certainly the time to eat, drink and be merry, but it’s not what you do between Christmas and New Year you need to be concerned about. It’s what you are doing between New Year and Christmas that will make the difference! This is the most popular time for people to start a diet or a new exercise regime. If you are serious about beating belly fat then this year make it your mission to review your regular diet and activities for long-lasting results. It’s tempting to go for the quick-win options – lose-7-pounds-in-7-days or miracle-diets, but the reality is that the results are short-lived and you eventually end up back in your old habits. There are two types of belly fat, one responds to exercise and the other responds to diet, so the best way to get a flat tummy involves a sensible exercise regime and a healthy diet. Inch loss is what matters, so try not to be focussed on the scales and measure yourself instead. Low fat, low calorie combinations with long periods between meals are the perfect way to increase your belly fat. Hunger leads to low energy levels and this leaves you reaching for starchy, high sugar foods that will not fill you up and plant themselves firmly around your middle. Big plates of pasta, potatoes or rice with your curry or casserole may be the perfect diet for an athlete about to do

Owner Claire Saunders a long distance run, but if you are more likely to be sitting in an office or a car they are going straight to your waistline. Reducing your alcohol intake will also drastically reduce the size of your beer/ wine/vodka belly! The secret is to aim for a higher proportion of protein such as chicken, fish and eggs and fill your plate with lots of vegetables that grow above the ground. Eat regular meals and drink plenty of water. The right amount of healthy fats such as olive oil, and even butter can actually help you lose your belly fat! Short bursts of exercise rather than long workouts are essential to kick-start your metabolism and increase inch loss. Aim for 30 minutes of this type of exercise two or three times a week. Core conditioning exercises such as pilates, yoga or general body toning will complement this. At Renu, our speedy-gym-for busywomen promotes a 30-minute workout and sound nutritional advice that has had amazing inch loss results for its members with results that last. Our 30-minute workout designed for women is the perfect choice for busy women who would like to improve their fitness or body shape. Our beautiful airconditioned gym is the perfect place for us to help you change the shape of your body and it only takes 30 minutes! The easy-to-use machines tone all major muscles in the body, increasing your metabolism giving great results in weight control and inch loss in minimum time. We would love to offer you a tour of our facilities and a free trial in the gym at your convenience.

SETTING UP FOR

Dave xxxx at DSA fitness can help you on your journey to achieve your fitness goals.

A

s 2018 starts you’ll probably have one or two New Year’s resolutions. I take a different approach. Rather than a list of things I want to do or stop doing I decide on my ultimate destination before I consider how I will get there. Setting a goal is the most important part. Only when you have your goal set can you think about the path that will get you there (working out, cutting out junk food). When setting goals, it’s important to use the SMART principle.

Specific – setting out to get fit or lose weight isn’t enough. You have to be clear on what you want to accomplish and to do this you need to be specific eg how much weight do you want to lose, how many inches do you want to lose and where from? Measurable – your goal has to be measurable. If it’s weight loss, how will you measure this? By weight? By measurments? Achievable – this is about setting yourself up for

success. Can you actually do what you set out to do in the above steps? For example, if you want to lose one stone in a week, is this attainable? No!

28

28-29 Fitness.indd 28

Relevant – is your goal relevant to the direction you want to take in your life? For me this is the emotional attachment – your big why. When you have an emotional attachment, this can keep you on track when the going gets tough. Time bound – set a deadline. This provides real clarity and acts as reminder, which in turns means your actions are more likely to be in harmony with your ultimate goal. To set yourself up for success, define your single most important goal. Don’t try to create Mission Impossible. Start with one goal and put all your focus into achieving that. Achieving one single goal which is the most important thing to you is better than trying to juggle four goals and not achieving any of them. To help define your goal and resonating with it, try using the following approach: Use these FIVE Ws to get specific about your health and fitness goals (or any other goals for that matter). Doing this will help you sustain your motivation so you can stop putting off making a start. Take five minutes to actually write down responses to the following questions. To claim your FREE taster session please follow me and get in touch via DSA Fitness on Facebook, contact me on 07740 362324 or email dsaustin@sky.com.

What do you want to achieve? Do you want to lose weight? Do you want to have more energy? Do you want to lose fat? Do you want to feel and look young again? Write this down.

Why do you want to achieve this goal?

Think about how achieving your goal will make you feel. This provides an emotional attachment that will prove crucial when you encounter bumps in the road on your journey. Write down EXACTLY how you will feel once you achieve your goal – it will provide motivation at difficult times.

Do you need help staying motivated? The key to answering this is to think about the obstacles that stopped you in the past and try to think of WHO can help you overcome these obstacles. At DSA Fitness I specialise in helping women who want to lose weight, get fitter and more toned but don’t want to go to a gym. As a special offer in January, I’m offering 10 FREE Lose Weight, Get Fitter and More Toned without going to the gym taster sessions. I would love nothing more than helping you make 2018 the year you achieve your goal. You can do this!

When do you want to see this goal accomplished? Pick a date where you’ll have this goal achieved. Be realistic here. Write it down.

Which obstacles have stopped you in the past? There is a reason you’re still struggling with weight, health and fitness—maybe more than one reason. If you started a workout programme, a diet, or a plan to move forward in the past—what stopped you?

Get focussed – get fit

Who do you need to get help from? Think about

what you can accomplish on your own with the knowledge you have, skills you have, and background you have. Do you need to turn to anyone for help or guidance?

For the perfect kick start to a healthier you in 2018, check out Homefield Grange, a day spa and health retreat, based in Rushton, which offers packages for weight loss, detox and wellness. Homefield’s venue is small, stylish and its team of specialised practitioners offer a personal touch that many big conveyorstyle spas just can’t match. It’s no surprise that since its opening in 2005, this little gem has built an enviable reputation as the celebrity-go-to health spa for those serious about wanting to look and feel great. Suzanne Peck, Naturopathic

Practitioner and Director explains the purpose of Homefield: “Clients want more from a day spa than a fluffy dressing gown and a back massage. Although Homefield’s beautiful venue is the perfect place to enjoy plenty of pampering therapies, it’s our speciality treatments that set us apart from the average health farm. For example, our intolerance tests can help

Queensgate’s Child Safe scheme reunites children who become lost while shopping with their parents.

ueensgate Shopping Centre has introduced a pioneering safety scheme, which offers a hotline number to assist parents and guardians in finding children who have become separated from them while out shopping. By calling the dedicated Child Safe number 0844 619 1202 parents and guardians will be put in contact with the security team, who will use a coordinated approach and CCTV to re-unite them with their children. The initiative also provides children with free wristbands for contact numbers so that, in the event of a child being lost, the parent or guardian can be contacted quickly. The wristbands will be available free of charge from the Customer Information Desk (outside John Lewis). The Child Safe helpline number will be displayed on bright, eye-catching posters throughout the shopping centre. Mark Broadhead, Centre Director at Queensgate Shopping Centre said: “Our customer safety and providing an enjoyable and relaxed experience is our priority, and Child Safe will give that extra reassurance to our shoppers with children.”

Eileen explained: “Since Safe Local Trades was established

in 2008, we have been asked for recommendations many services – so we are now delighted to be able to launch Safe Local Services. “Each service will undergo a stringent vetting process, have its own profile, gallery of images and a chance for consumers to leave their own feedback and reviews. hen planning an interior design project, it is important to take into consideration both functionality as well as aesthetics. Take your time, make informed decision and always seek professional advice especially on a big project or expensive purchases. Sometimes it is easy to fall into the trap of buying something just because you love it when in reality it does not work with the rest of

If space is something that your room is lacking you want to create an impression of light and roominess and your furniture choices have a big part to play in helping you achieve that. Filling the room with sofas and chairs with high arms and backs

It is important to try and create a seamless flow throughout your house to form the feeling of light, space and continuity. This does not restrict you to the exact same colours in each room but there should be points of interest throughout. By using colours from similar palettes that complement each other, you can T: 01778 382762 | January 2018

achieve a home that works in harmony without looking bland. The options are endless and the design of your home should be fun and stress-free, which is why our designers are on hand to offer help and advice. At Hunters Interiors we are happy to help you with your project from start to finish or with just elements of it, the choice is yours. ASK THE DESIGNERS

Candida Smith and Georgie Teesdale have more than 40

years combined experience in the interior design industry. Candida says: “If you are on a budget but still want your project to pack a punch, choose a less expensive fabric to make an impact with cushions or a blind and use a more cost-effective fabric for your main base such upholstery or curtains.” Georgie says: “I love combining curtains and blinds in coordinating fabrics for the ultimate well-dressed look. Go for long curtains for a more elegant look.”

HOW TO

YOUR HOME Thinking of selling your home? Do you want to achieve the best price for your home? Would you like a quick sale?

M

3

TRYING TO SELL WITHOUT AN AGENT

1

4

REFUSE AN EARLY OFFER THINKING A BETTER ONE WILL COME ALONG

5

BEING TOO RELAXED ABOUT SELLING

ost vendors aim to achieve the highest possible price in the shortest possible time, which is considered the ultimate sale. It’s no fluke that some properties sell quickly, but you need to know what to do for the best, and how to market them correctly. Wilson & Co highlights some common mistakes that you should avoid when selling. SETTING A REALISTIC ASKING PRICE

The first three weeks are the most critical time of your sale – this is when 70% of interest occurs. If you price your house too high, you may end up reducing the price a couple of months down the line when you could have already moved and started life in your new home

2

GOING WITH A CHEAP ESTATE AGENT TO SAVE MONEY

When it comes to choosing a good estate agent, you need to ask yourself this – what will this agent do to sell my house? Just like anything else you buy, you get what you pay for. Instruct an estate agent you trust and respect and follow your gut instinct. A good

agent may charge half a per cent more, but they are far more likely to sell the house for a higher price.

The biggest danger here are time wasters. A good agent can vet your buyers and check they are able to proceed with the purchase as well as afford it.

Weigh up all of the alternatives, nobody wants to give their home away, but try to be realistic.

This can put buyers off. You need to be keen, but not desperate.

Here are just some of the things Wilson & Co can do to help you to sell your home: ■ Value properties at the perfect level, showing evidence of price. ■ Offer professional photography to show your home at its best. ■ Write an informative and engaging property description giving just the right amount of information to gain interest. Tweak things if we feel anything requires improvement. ■ Promote your house on websites and social media, nationwide and around the world. ■ Continual analysis of your viewing figures and constant feedback. ■ Friendly and practical support throughout the sale process. ■ Liaise with surveyors and solicitors and ensure the progress of the sale does not slow down.

Cleaning tips from Peters’ Cleaners

Tea

With more customers bringing their linen to Peters’ Cleaners each week for a professional wash and press, a common stain we treat is tea. Cash flow

MODELLING

What does your financial future will look like?

C

ash flow modelling is an exciting innovation at Liberty Partnership that allows us to assess your current and projected wealth. We will create a detailed picture of your financial position and forecast what your finances will look like from your current age to a maximum age of 100. We will be thorough and will consider all of your assets, which could include savings, investments, pension funds, future inheritances, state pension provisions and property investments.

We will complete a detailed income and expenditure, which will include your anticipated future expenditure at the point of your retirement. We will make allowances for investment returns, inflation and we can even model stock market downturns and how these events could impact on you. You will find that the cash flow models that we create are an essential tool as you will be able to see an accurate visual representation of your finances, both now and in the future, therefore making it easier to make adjustments to accommodate

your future goals and aspirations. Once the cash flow model has been created this is just the starting point as your advisor will continue to work with you and update your personal model to reflect changes to your circumstances. The cash flow model will be presented to you and you will be able to understand it, we promise, you really will! We are certain that this will change how you plan your financial future. So should you wish to model your finances with certainty towards the future then do not hesitate to contact our office for a FREE initial discussion.

MORMON

Charles Kingston – our city’s Mormon Fundamentalist and Registrar to the USA Land Office

JUNE AND VERNON BULL – LOCAL HISTORIANS AND AUTHORS

C

harles was born on 9 November 1856 in the parish of St Mark’s Peterborough and appeared in the census of 1861 and again in the census of 1871. He emigrated to Utah, USA in 1879, and died aged 87 in Ogden, Utah on 19 July 1944. His father, Frederic, left his mother Mary Anne (nee Hunter), and him in Peterborough to join the Mormons in America. For this reason, his mother poisoned Charles’ mind – refusing to join her husband in Mormonism. Charles went to St Mark’s junior school in Gladstone Street and then after senior school he took a position with Great Northern Railways. At the age of 22 he left Peterborough for Utah and encountered his first harsh

winter – said to be so severe that livestock died because of a lack of food. Being used to an active life in Peterborough, Charles could not find work in Morgan, Utah, other than feeding his father’s cattle. This he found so unsuitable that he started to read Mormon literature. In later life he said he was so glad of these books because it gave him enough reading material to enable him to use the Book of Mormon as a weapon of assault to gather in others to the faith – the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS). Within months of his arrival at Morgan, Utah, he was converted to the faith and was baptised into it on his 23rd birthday in 1879.

Kingston Utah clan

The Mormon doctrine believes homosexuality is a sin. Meanwhile, back in Peterborough, Charles’ mother was sent money by her husband, Frederic, to join him in Utah but in 1885 when she arrived Fred had already married polygamously, and was raising another family! Worse was to come as she learnt that her beloved son Charles had also married to Mary Priscilla Lerwill Tucker on 17 May 1883. Shortly after Mary’s arrival she lost hope and immediately returned to Peterborough. The devastation of her 29-yearold son Charles being totally converted and immersed in the Mormon faith seems to have utterly depressed her.

Charles and Priscilla went on to have 10 children but at the time of his mother’s visit – he only had the one son – Charles William Kingston, born 26 June 1884. In May 1886 Charles was given a two-year mission to England. When he arrived, he travelled to visit his mother in Peterborough, only to find that she had died and that her funeral had taken place only a week earlier. His father Frederic died nine years later. Today there are 14 million

worldwide followers of Mormonism. The Mormon doctrine is anti-abortion, opposed to gay marriage and believes homosexuality is a sin. Unmarried sexual acts, gambling, tobacco, alcohol, tea and coffee consumption and the use of drugs are all frowned upon. In June 1897 President William McKinley (25th president of the USA) appointed Charles Kingston as the registrar of the US Land Office at Evanston, Wyoming.

Elden Kingston grandson of Charles Charles’ grandson Elden Kingston (1909-1948) was the eldest son of Charles William Kingston jnr, and became one of the fundamentalists who introduced polygamy into the Mormon faith. NEXT ISSUE: James Horrabin – distinguished cartoonist, illustrator and the city’s MP from 1929 to 1931.

The 18th century saw the fall and rise of local community numbers. BRIAN JONES – LOCAL HISTORIAN

T

he 17th century – the Civil War and its aftermath – changed many things. Now it is the 18th century – 1700s – and, in Stamford, the traffic and traders passing through the town are helping things back into life. The communities along the river Welland are also settling into the new century repairing damaged conditions and, in Uffington, expanding with the building of a new, large house by a new family. However, away from the river Welland is the community of Bourne, and things are not quite so good there. Its Abbey church had been dissolved in 1539 and the site granted to Sir Richard Cotton. The Abbey was not a singular community being a sub-division of the Augustinian order with the nave being used as Bourne’s parish church. On a wall of the church today this ‘duplication’ shows Abbots being in situ from 1138 to 1534 and ‘Vicars of Bourne’ recorded from c1200 to the present day. There are gaps though. Richard Milward is recorded as taking office in 1649 with the next vicar taking office in 1711 – far too long a gap! However other sources record him ‘moved on’ in 1662 with T: 01778 382762 | January 2018

Looking for a fresh challenge, new skills and a great social scene?

F

ollowing its phenomenal success over the last couple of years, Men United in Song is back for 2018, once again raising money for Prostate Cancer UK. Launching in February, the project will sign up a minimum of 40 local men with a range of previous singing experience (including none) to rehearse over 10 weeks for a charity concert at the Cresset Theatre on Saturday 14 April. To date the project has engaged hundreds of local men, raising many thousands of pounds for the charity. “I’d seen the adverts for Men United in Song and finally plucked up the courage to give it a shot!” says Alex Smith, who participated in the project last year. “The first rehearsal was nerve-racking and nothing like I expected but the final performance was such an adrenaline rush. If you’re thinking about signing up, you have nothing to lose and everything to gain – confidence, friends, trips to the pub – and the singing of course! Getting involved is one of the best decisions I have made.” Men United In Song kicks off with introduction sessions at the Key Theatre at the beginning of February. Absolutely no previous experience is required to join, they are not looking for 100% in musicality, but 100% in enthusiasm. Come along to an introduction session and find out more.
