THIS
Happy Spring Everyone!
H
ello readers and I can finally say, hello Spring! The clocks have turned back, the days are getting longer and we live in hope that the sunshine follows. I think we are all ready to get outside and enjoy some fresh air. As Easter is very early this year, we included lots of places to go and activities to do for the holidays in the March edition (which you can still find online). The April issue of Scene is a celebration of our beloved pets! More and more people are owning pets now and we love to spend our leisure time walking, playing and cuddling our little furry friends. This feature, starting on page 34, includes information about deciding on what pet to have, protecting your pets, training, feeding and helping them when they are not feeling 100%. We have advice from a local vet and information about a more holistic approach to pet health. In addition, you’ll find some great nutritional tips as we highlight the benefits of turmeric and provide you with a guide to fitness. You can also win some amazing skin care products on page 19. In our leisure section there are inspirational ideas about where to go on holiday abroad or day trips a little closer to home, plus we have a family ticket for theMusic in the Park event – see page 63. We hope you enjoy this months’ Scene - have a fabulous Easter.

It really is ‘the’ place to eat

ith many choices now available in the city centre to stop and have a bite to eat, you must not overlook the long-time established Brasserie style café at John Lewis in Queensgate; The Place to Eat. A new menu has been introduced to accommodate the ever-changing dietary demands through choice and health, whilst still offering some of the all-time favourites. Heidi from the Scene had to try the new dishes for herself! “I am always pleasantly surprised when I visit the café at John Lewis, although knowing the high standards of the brand, I shouldn’t be. The food on the menu is more varied than most cafes and you cannot beat them for freshness. I ordered a selection of dishes to sample salads, hot plates and cakes, starting with an egg and king prawn Caesar salad with parmesan and crisp fresh coz lettuce that was the perfect light lunch. Also available is a falafel, humus, roasted carrot, omega seeds and super sweet pepper salad – totally delicious and a great healthy option. The chunky chicken, leek and ham pie with shortcrust pastry had tender meat and gravy full of flavour. There is also an authentic chicken curry dish served with dahl (lentils), rice, poppadums’ and a superb mango chutney, however you will need a

hearty appetite for this one! Customers at the café enjoy nothing more than a coffee from the espresso bar and a sticky bun, and if it is choice you are after, there is nowhere better than here. There must be over 15 different treats to choose from, from cream scones to carrot and pumpkin cake. I wanted to sample a wide range so started with a piece of the Jaffa cake – an orange and chocolate sponge that was full of zesty flavour and rich chocolate, followed by a variation of a lemon meringue pie, which instead of pastry, was placed on a buttery biscuit base which was a perfect match. I also tried the sticky ginger cake which ticked all of the boxes. But be aware, the portion sizes at The Place to Eat are on the large side, but then after your retail therapy, it’s just the ticket!

urmeric seems to be very much in vogue at the moment. I am increasingly seeing new turmeric products gracing the shelves of our health food shops and supermarkets. There are all sorts available; various turmeric lattes, teas, tablets and even face creams!! Hmmm, I am not too sure about the face cream though, I would rather not have turmeric coloured skin! This bright yellow, mildly aromatic spice may now be trending in the Western world but many Eastern cultures have been using it for centuries. So, why is turmeric trending in the U.K? Well, the simple answer is that it has amazing healing properties. It is a natural anti-inflammatory as it contains curcumin. Although there is no real hard evidence as to how beneficial it actually is, it is widely used by Asian housewives, who swear by it. One particular Asian housewife

who was a huge fan of it was my mother. I remember mum telling me how she would use turmeric paste on cuts to heal wounds and stop infections and of course anyone who was ill was religiously given turmeric milk to help them heal from the inside. So, not only can it be applied topically, it can be ingested but be careful, itcan stain. As a child I thought these stories of the wonders of turmeric were exaggerated and just old wives tales, well - Asian old wives tales actually. However, I now know that the turmeric tales my mum told me were full of wisdom, passed down from generation to generation. So, in keeping with my family tradition and culture, I am passing on that knowledge to my own daughter. She recently caught this terrible flu bug that was going around, so when she came home recently, guess what I made her – yep, turmeric milk just like my mum would give to me when I was ill.

y client originally came to see me for anxiety issues and concerns around drinking too much when feeling emotionally low. This, with a number of other personal issues, ended up with her feeling out of control and constantly on edge. Within a couple of weeks, her sleeping pattern was much better and she was feeling more alert during the day. Now, reflecting on the last 7 sessions, my client has made better choices, allocated much needed time to switch off and relax and gained greater confidence in herself. Visually she looks a lot brighter, and positive reflection of the week shows that she is making better decisions to help with day to day problems. More than anything, she has the capability to do more and achieve the things she wants for her family. To do this, she needed control. Once we feel in control, our anxiety decreases.
When we are feeling confident and in control we are using the intellectual brain. This allows us to make better choices, reflect positively on how to move forward and come up with answers to our questions by making a proper assessment of the situation. Following this clients journey has been fantastic. I have watched her grow and realise that life isn’t about doom and gloom and hiding emotions and anxiety, it’s there to live and enjoy. It’s so rewarding to get clients to understand that acknowledging achievements and daily positives actually rewires our brain to start looking for more positives. Keep repeating the process and they can end up feeling happier naturally without much effort. Do you feel trapped by anxiety? Controlled by those things your mind has told you you can’t do? Consider giving hypnotherapy a go. Positive thoughts.

y eliminating toxins, we naturally start to lose weight, which means in turn by hitting the ‘refresh’ button, our body will also be able to increase its nutritional intake. How would this benefit you? Let me share with you a list of the symptoms you may be experiencing and see if any of these apply to you: ■ Digestive complaints - constipation/bloating ■ Nausea ■ Migraines/headaches ■ Fatigue ■ Weight gain ■ Aching muscles/joints ■ Poor concentration/memory ■ Mood swings ■ Bad skin/bad breath ■ Lower back pain If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, the good news is, you can do something about it. Because 80% of our immune system lives in our gut, inflammation can occur by an overload of toxins so you need to remove food groups that do not serve you! I’ve previously talked about sugar and dairy, but other toxins you should remove are alcohol and coffee. In October 2015, the Telegraph published an article exposing that many alcoholic drinks are made sweeter to appeal to young Brits who have been raised on high energy drinks, which links into the

How to improve your health through your diet
Think about the ‘cause and effect’ of your choices problem of many hidden sugars. Caffeine, the main ingredient in coffee, is a compound that naturally derives from over 60 different plant sources, however if the coffee you are drinking has had certain artificial chemicals added, the body doesn’t recognise the source. Did you know that the liver and kidneys are two of our main detoxifying organs? The liver has over 500 functions, whilst the kidney filters over 189 litres of blood every day! Our bodies eliminate toxins through a number of different ways too - lungs, skin, colon and the lymph. When we overload our bodies with toxins the liver is unable to eliminate them properly. The toxins then get stored as fat. By stopping the flow of toxins to our body, the body can find its natural balance again and release the excess weight. So the next time you shop or eat, take a step back and really think about the ‘cause and effect’ of your choices. Wishing you a wonderful April – Happy Easter.

Jouve Products reviewed by Dee Kennedy
O
ver the last few weeks I have been reviewing the Jouve instant tightening and restoring serum, along with the Jouve dark spot corrector and brightening cream and at the end of the day, the Jouve nourishing night cream. Only the cleanest ingredients are used including plant extracts- so no harmful chemicals and they also carry the leaping bunny mark- so not tested on animals. When applying to the areas of your face you wish to tighten, for me the crows feet around the eyes, you can actually feel it tightening the skin as it dries, almost like a face mask would feel. The longer you leave it on the better it works, so I left mine on for around an hour then applied the dark spot corrector and brightening cream before getting ready for the day ahead with my usual make up. If in a hurry, I mixed the serum with the brightening cream so I still got the benefit of both. After just a couple of weeks using these Jouve products, I could see a reduction in the lines around my eyes and the dark circles have reduced. The nourishing night cream is a must! Applied every night, an hour before bed, it helps replenish the moisture lost during the day and your skin feels soft and plump the next morning. So, if you are like me and need to hold back the lines, then these 3 Jouve products are a must. Double celebration for city business dedicated to championing consumers
W
hen it comes to looking for a recommended and reliable tradesperson, there is one city business that has been championing consumers for a decade. Safe Local Trades online service provides thousands of customers within the PE area with easy access to reliable and reputable tradesmen. In a double celebration, Safe Local Trades Director, Eileen Le Voi, has launched a sister company, Safe Local Services, which received its official unveiling at a recent celebration for members, attended by Peterborough Mayor, Cllr John Fox. Consumer confidence and working tirelessly to force out rogue and cowboy traders across the Peterborough area, Safe Local Trades and Eileen have received a number of awards for the community-focussed service. Safe Local Services, which will offer recommended services from accountants to dog groomers and dentists to website designers, will seek to build on the huge success of Safe Local Trades which has attracted over 12,000 positive reviews. Hosting the celebration at Peterborough Greyhound Stadium, Eileen explained: “We are thrilled to be able to celebrate our 10th anniversary
with many of our valued members and the Mayor and Mayoress of Peterborough. Since Safe Local Trades was established in 2008, we have been asked for recommendations on dozens of different services outside the remit of tradesmen – hence we are now delighted to be able to launch Safe Local Services. Each service has been vetted, has their own profile and a chance for consumers to leave feedback and reviews. Consumers trust our recommendations and the benefit is two-fold as professionals becoming a member of Safe Local Services will benefit from an already trusted and highly respected service - as well as a reputable brand name. Gaining the Safe Local Services seal of approval will provide instant consumer confidence and trust and ultimately win more business.” Spaces for services will be limited to a first come first served basis, and anyone keen to be featured on Safe Local Services within the PE postcode can register their interest now at www.safelocalservices.com/service-providers

Pop your summer duvet on and get the winter one laundered
D
uvets and pillows absorb sweat, grease and dirt so ideally you should wash them twice a year although many people think annually is sufficient. Do check the care label - most duvets and pillows can be put in your washing machine (if they fit!) on a low temperature with a basic detergent. Do ensure it is completely dry though as if it is stored damp, it will start to smell. If you can’t fit your duvet or pillows into your machine at home, find a laundrette or drop it off at your local Dry Cleaner. All duvets we wash are returned in breathable bags for storage to keep them fresh.
4. Wash with detergent in warm water – chocolate melts in your pocket so you don’t need hot water that can damage fabrics to remove it. 5. If residual marks remain, re-treat and wash again. Chocolate contains a high level of fat so if the fabric is delicate or dry clean only, take it to a reputable Dry Cleaner. It is not advisable to apply water to dry clean only fabrics as water may shrink, distort and discolour some fabrics.
Ask Peters’ Cleaners
Q
My cat urinated on my duvet, what should I do? A Animal urine, specifically cat urine, has a very strong odour so the duvet needs to be washed to remove it. We advise that you wash the duvet immediately and thoroughly air it. If you want your duvet professionally cleaned, ensure you advise the Dry Cleaner that the duvet has urine on it so they can wash it immediately.
One final note… Easter Egg Stain Shame?! It’s the Easter season and chocolate stains can set in fast, so here are some basic steps for removing them: 1. Check the care label for the item. 2. For washable fabrics, scrape off any excess chocolate being careful not to spread the stain. 3. Pre-treat with a stain remover. T: 01778 382762 | April 2018

A
s we start a new financial year at Wilson&Co Homes, we thought we’d give you a quick hit of some facts and figures on our sales and letting performance over the last few months. Why choose us? The following figures speak for themselves!
SALES PERFORMANCE The last 13 property sales that have turned to SOLD have taken an average of 29 days to sell, from the date of being put to market. The industry average in our area is 72 days. In fact, 5 of them were actually sold within 48 hours! We achieved 98.3% of the initial marketed value on all of the properties.
We were proud to see our listings achieving the most views on 22 days of the last few months. Over the whole time period, we achieved a very respectable 4th out of 52 estate agents operating in our area and we sit 7th for performance in terms of speed of sales. We naturally have properties that take longer than others to sell, but currently our longest property on the market has been for sale for just over 12 weeks.
SOCIAL MEDIA PERFORMANCE
In today’s world we understand that as a business we need to have a strong presence on social media. We operate across most platforms, providing news (both local and property related), tips, advice and of course, sharing the properties we are marketing. Over the last 4-5 months we have LETTINGS FIGURES outperformed all other agents in our area Our average let time this year sits at 11 on Facebook alone, and continue to days from a property being advertised lead the way on Instagram too. any pet owners will be familiar with pet insurance that is used to help pay for treatment of a pet once it falls ill. But there are other ways to help keep your pet healthy – and potentially avoid costly treatment in the first place. Scott Cheyney, from the Best Friends Vet Group, explains the benefits of the Pet Health Club.
WHAT IS PET HEALTH CLUB? The Pet Health Club is a wellness plan, focused on preventative healthcare. It covers annual vaccinations and monthly anti-parasite treatments and enables people to spread the cost of this preventative care over 12 monthly payments. The treatments are also discounted significantly when compared to purchasing them individually.
WHAT PROBLEMS CAN IT HELP PREVENT? It is a sad fact that a significant number of pets do not receive annual vaccinations. This varies from species to species, with dogs being better catered for than cats, and rabbits being the most forgotten, with just a small minority being vaccinated each year. Myxomatosis is a widespread disease. It has an almost 100% fatality rate. Most rabbit owners will be familiar with it, but still relatively few rabbits are vaccinated. Pet Health Club ensures all vaccinations

It also helps encourage the regular use of antiparasite treatment to control external parasites such as fleas and ticks, and internal parasites such as lungworm, roundworms and tapeworms. Fleas are not just a nuisance, they can spread other blood borne parasites, and their saliva can induce an allergic reaction leading to skin diseases. Lungworm – a disease dogs pick up from eating slugs and snails, or even just drinking from puddles – is being diagnosed more and more frequently in the UK. Dogs are often extremely unwell with internal bleeding because of the worm infestation, and it can be fatal if not caught early enough. Monthly worming, with certain wormers only available on prescription from a veterinary surgeon, can prevent this disease and its potentially disastrous consequences. Ticks are another parasite of concern. They

spread several diseases, including Lymes disease, a bacterial infection spread to animals and humans when they bite. There are also several of what we call zoonotic diseases, diseases that can pass from animal to human, that will be less prevalent where regular parasite control is used. These include the toxocara roundworms, the eggs of which are passed in dog faeces and can be a health risk especially to children. PCR - a volunteer run registered charity, helping to re-home stray and unwanted cats in Peterborough and surrounding areas.
P
eterborough Cat Rescue (PCR) believe that all cats should be neutered to prevent the widespread number of unwanted animals that find themselves in rescue centres across the country. Funds raised by PCR are used to support cats and kittens in their care, plus to raise awareness of what happens when cats are not neutered – a pair of unneutered cats can produce several thousand offspring in their short lifetimes! Unneutered male cats tend to roam and get into fights with other domestic cats. Wounds can abscess and if left untreated, can have painful and sometimes fatal results whilst at the same time, running the risk of catching and spreading disease. PCR has no premises so rely on volunteers and always have cats looking for caring lifetime homes. If you’d like to adopt a cat, you can find out more about how our adoption process works via our website and take the first steps into bringing a new furry friend into your life. In fact, you can help PCR in a number of ways; by volunteering to help fundraise, by sponsoring an individual cat, by a one-off or regular donation, or giving items for tombola and to sell online. In addition to fundraising events, we hold regular homing days throughout the year.

ith a passion for natural products and wanting to offer customers good quality, natural food and treats, Elise Sandiford and Mel Randle made their dream a reality in 2011 when they founded Posh Petz. Here’s what they’re all about. With all things natural being very important to us, this had to be evident in the theme of our new found permanent premises. When you enter the store, you’ll find that the place has been kitted out with homemade wooden gondolas and stands made from scratch using old cable drums and pallets. There is even a real tree in the shop!
ALL THINGS CATERED Predominantly catering for dogs and cats, alongside some small animal and wild bird products, we stock natural food and treats, beds, dog coats and accessories. As well as our very own brand, we offer an array of alternative well known fresh and frozen food brands. Why not try out raw bones and treats? THE IMPORTANCE OF DOG TRAINING Your dog is never too old or experienced to learn new skills, and dog training classes aren’t just for puppies, but benefit adult dogs and rescue dogs too. They will go through various developmental stages and challenges and training classes will provide you with the confidence and skills to enable your dog to live a happy and fulfilled life. You’ll soon find that you are able to do more with them as you won’t feel so limited if your dog is well behaved, wellmannered and makes good choices. Training helps your dog to learn how to learn, continue to learn new things and also to maintain an active mind. It improves skills such as recall, self-control and obedience and
most importantly, strengthens the bond between you both. You learn life skills which are unique to each dog and family. Our dogs are learning all the time, whether we step in and direct them or not, so by going to training classes it can help to prevent many unwanted behaviours and gives you the support and knowledge to overcome them. Do any of these sound familiar – ‘you won’t get anywhere until you start showing him who’s boss’, ‘she’ll calm down when she’s older’ - we certainly did until we discovered that the way you see real life results is down to what games and tools you have in your tool kit. Please get in touch if you have any questions or would like more information! We look forward to working with you and your dog!

T
he implications of the child benefit tax charge for higher earners aren’t always immediately obvious! Child benefit can be claimed for all children under 16. The current benefit is £20.70 per week for the first child and £13.70 for each additional child. So for 2 children this is currently £1,788 per annum.
Be tax efficient with your child benefit
HOW IS THE EXTRA TAX CALCULATED?
If you have an income of £50,000 - £60,000 a year, the amount of extra tax you’ll have to pay will be 1% of the amount of Child Benefit you get for every £100 of your income above £50,000. So, should your income be £55,000 this would lead to a 50% reduction in child benefit - £894 if you have 2 children.
THE TAX CHARGE Where a parent has not requested that HMRC stop paying child benefit, a tax charge will be levied on the household’s highest earner if their personal taxable income exceeds £50,000 per tax year.
Whatever you circumstances we believe that advice is essential. So for this or any other financial matter please contact our office on 01778 342291 for a FREE initial discussion.
WHAT CAN BE DONE? One possible solution is to make an additional pension contribution. The £55,000 earner could make a £5,000 pension contribution, and, as a higher rate
tax payer, can claim effective tax relief on the payment of £2,000 – the net cost therefore being £3,000. The pension contribution of £5,000 then reduces the net income to £50,000, so 100% of the Child Benefit will be retained. If you follow the example through, a £5,000 pension contribution would receive £2,000 tax relief and £894 returned by way of child benefit, so the true cost of the £5,000 contribution would be £2,104! There are other ways of doing it, including charity contributions.

e all have to grow older, and why shouldn’t this be in the comfort of our homes? We all deserve to be surrounded by our memories and those we love. Wright Care at Home believes in a care team that do just this. Their mission is, and always will be, to ‘promote independent living’. They believe in giving people the support and opportunity to carry out their daily routines as they always have, whilst maintaining safety in their own home. Their goal is to always ensure customers are provided with dignity and respect and that their wishes are met. Every individual is different and they create a bespoke, personalised service. Since 2016 Wright Care at Home has grown within Stamford and the surrounding villages. Over the next 12 months, they are looking to offer more jobs in the area to provide the community with more skilled carers to meet the evergrowing demand for support. Care isn’t just a career but it is a ‘career with a difference’ that comes with a huge reward. Recruiting the right person is vital to ensuring that an individual receives the quality of care they deserve. Often many questions are asked such as: Do I need qualifications? age? Do I need to drive? Do I need training? Wright Care at Home understand that interviews are often daunting, it’s a role that may be new to someone, or a career that not many understand the details of. With that in mind, they are holding regular monthly recruitment sessions within Stamford where you can pop along, have a coffee with a member of the team and take an application form. They believe in offering friendly information that enables you to decide if this could be a career for you. If you are looking for a career change that adds reward to your day then pop along. All details for coffee mornings can be found by contacting one of the friendly team at the Wright Care at Home office, Monday to Friday 9am - 5pm.

lfred Caleb Taylor was born in Newark, Nottinghamshire on 29 December 1860. In 1880 he started work as a dispenser at Peterborough Infirmary (now the Museum) in Priestgate, succeeding Mr Whitwell. Dr Paley was then physician and Mr Thomas Walker was surgeon. Caleb, as he preferred to be known, was an early promoter of X-ray technology and he designed and built his own equipment at the Infirmary in 1896. His machine was the first outside London and was powered by batteries (accumulators) which were recharged at Cadge & Coleman, the local flour mill,
as there was no public electricity supply at this time. His device ranked as the first in the UK outside London and took positive rather than negative images. Back then the dangers of prolonged exposure to radiation were unknown. Caleb’s work was pioneering in the medical world, but it exacted an enormous price as he used himself in his x-ray experiments. Ultimately this caused him to have three fingers on his left hand and one on his right hand amputated. Eventually, Caleb contracted radiation poisoning, but he

This pioneering x-ray work finally cost him his life and he died of skin cancer on 26 July 1927. Caleb had a keen interest in photography which was shared with his relatives Andrew and George Taylor (A&G Taylor Photographers to Queen Victoria under a Royal Warrant dated 1886 - they claimed to be the largest photographers in the world, with national and international offices). In fact, Caleb Taylor was a founder member of the Peterborough Photographic Society in 1916 and was its President from then until his death. His other interests included art and music (he was a member of the local Operatic and Orchestral

Victorian x-ray department societies). In addition, he was on the committee of Peterborough Archaeological Society and a member of the Natural History Society. He served as Radiographer and Secretary (a managerial position) at the infirmary from 1889 until he retired in September 1926 when he was presented with a £700 cheque and a silver salver in recognition of his sacrifice to the advancement of pioneering x-ray machines that served to assist with early diagnosis of

medical conditions. However, these early x-ray machines were highly rudimentary in the way they were pieced together, as well as the fact that they discharged shockingly high levels of radiation – both to the operator and the patient. An 1896 x-ray machine exposed the body to 1,500 times more radiation than modern technology does; mainly because each image took 90 minutes to develop which in
turn dramatically increased the patient’s cumulative exposure to the rays. In comparison, modern x-rays require 21 milliseconds and technicians place lead covering over the body to protect vital organs from the slightest exposure. Pioneering experimenters, like Caleb, used these early x-ray machines that often caused them to suffer effects such as eye complaints, skin burns, loss of hair, cancers and premature death. Caleb’s x-ray tube was acquired by South Kensington Museum to form part of their exhibits on the development of x-ray research. On his death Caleb left a widow, four sons and three daughters. His funeral took place at the Cathedral at 2pm on 29 July 1927 followed by interment at St Botolph’s Church, Longthorpe. y 1665 the Welland Canal was basically complete and the tolls arising from it were leased to one of the aldermen of the borough at a nominal rent. In 1673, a Richard Blome records that ‘traffic was passing up and down the river, now made navigable’. Canal leases ran for 40 years and were obtained from the Mayor and Council of Stamford and the holders of these leases were required to scour and cleanse the bed and repair the banks, ditches, bridges, drains and locks. If, after 3 months’ notice, the lease holder had failed to repair the defective parts, the Corporation would claim the profit of the navigation to do the repairs. The Domesday survey had recorded 4 mills at West Deeping which probably included the mills at Lolham and Maxey. One of these mills, in Simon Walburge’s ownership, was situated at the south end of the village near Saint Andrew’s church and, in 1728, its’ ownership passed to Thomas Sellars. He retained the ownership until
the holders of the leases were required to scour and cleanse the bed and repair the banks, ditches, bridges, drains and locks 1764 when it passed to John Castledine – a farmer of Manthorpe near Grantham. In his will of 30th August 1793, John gave his daughter Theodosia the water mill with ‘all its gears and implements’. He also gave her two acres of pasture land in the village. The Stamford Mercury of 27th October 1795 offered: ‘To let on lease or otherwise and entered upon immediately a very good corn Watermill situated at West Deeping. Applications should be made to Messrs Joseph and Stephen Castledine of Manthorpe.’ However - Theodosia married John Green – a miller of West Deeping and, in due time, the mill and lands were left to their youngest daughter Elizabeth who put the mill up to auction. But that’s in the 19th century so we’ll come back to that later! The Lolham Mill had been built on the River Welland in 1640 and survives behind

the main house - an imposing building of Regency design added almost two centuries later that catches the eye. The mill is now a working farm and no longer grinds corn – however, the mill race and operating machinery can still be seen above the mill pool at the rear. Further along the river bank towards Market Deeping still stands Molecey Mill. In 1747 John Molecey had been recorded as a ‘Whittawer’ – ‘A person who makes white leather’. In later descriptions we find ‘a saddler or harness-maker, especially one who works in whitleather’ or ‘a person who converts skins into white leather; a tawer’. He was also known as a miller and baker. When John died in 1774 his son and then grandson – both named John – succeeded him as millers using water from the river Welland.

here is much to celebrate in 2018 but there are also two important centenaries to remember - 100 years since the end of the First World War and 100 years of service from The Royal Air Force, which was formed in the last year of the war when the Royal Flying Corps merged with the Royal Naval Air Service. A century later we continue to honour those that fought in The Great War and this year we’ll add to these military tributes and pay thanks to The RAF who have proudly protected our country since 1918. Would you believe that it was 50 years ago that Gardeners’ World and Dads Army first aired on our screens! The first episode of Gardeners’ World was presented by enthusiastic horticulturalist and audience favourite Percy Thrower who was awarded an MBE before Ypres–

passing away in 1988. And who could forget some of Mainwaring’s famous lines from this classic British comedy including “Don’t tell ‘em Pike!”, “Stupid boy” and “That’ll do, that’ll do”. Here’s a little something that might come in handy at your next pub quiz… 50 years ago the last steam powered main-line passenger train took its final journey before being banned the next day, only to have the ban lifted three years later meaning we can still enjoy these heritage engines today! And of course, 2018 will be remembered for The Royal Wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle who have decided to wed on the same day as the FA Cup Final! MAURITIUS M auritius, an Indian Ocean paradise island, boasts long stretches of stunning powder-soft white beaches, secluded coves and stunning scenery. It is a rainbow island with a mix of both eastern and western cultures living together on a verdant tropical island of colour and contrast. The attraction of this balmy island, chattering with bird calls and cascading waterfalls, is as apparent today as it has always been, drawing visitors from around the globe. The airy colonial homes of a bygone era have been replaced by an offering of sophisticated resort hotels, which set standards the world over. But there is more to the island than just self-contained resorts. For the beach connoisseur, the island is a treasure but between the shores of dazzling sand and blue seas is a scenic island with extinct volcanoes, lakes, waterfalls, forests and botanical gardens. The north of the island tends to host the most inviting beaches. Grand Baie is certainly one of the finest and its small town provides some wonderful bars and restaurants, creating a very cosmopolitan feel. Other excellent beaches are found on the east and west coast but, as the island becomes more rugged to the south, the beaches diminish. The mountains, however, provide some impressive scenery, with magnificent views from the top of Black River Canyon looking out across the densely forested gorge to the coastal plain beyond. With a good ‘motorway’ running across and around the island, Mauritius is easy to explore and the number of points of interest should certainly

For romantic escapes and fun family holidays – Mauritius has it all!
keep the inquisitive traveller busy. The multitude of races and religions living side by side on the island, resulting in a year-round schedule of festivals, adds a level of vibrancy, colour and impetus to get up and explore. The summer season is from November to May, when it is hot and humid, with a good chance of rain. The more refreshing “winter” season is from June to September when it is cooler and dry, and the temperature rarely drops below 25°C. Mauritius is home to some of the finest hotels in the world and the standard and selection of accommodation available means you will be spoilt for choice. From 3* simplicity to 5* all-inclusive luxury - there really is the perfect resort for you.

Superior Room - 7 nights all-inclusive from £4,017.00, based on a family of 4 (2 adults/2 children), including return flights and private transfers.
The island’s world-class resorts, fabulous beaches and fun nature reserves will keep young ones entertained for hours. Most resorts have FREE children’s clubs with dedicated staff to look after younger guests and where specially planned activities and events are on offer. Amusement parks, museums, sports activities and nature trails are also to be found throughout the island and will be memorable experiences for the whole family. Amongst our favourite family hotels are the 5-star Heritage Awali, an all-inclusive resort located in the south that has a great array of facilities. The 5-star Westin Turtle Bay Resort & Spa on the north west coast faces Turtle Bay which is a protected marine park. The 3½-star Veranda Grand Baie Hotel and Spa is located in stunning surroundings and offers fabulous hospitality. There is no doubt that Mauritius offers something for everyone. Mix this with beautiful weather and ultra-friendly people and you certainly will not be disappointed. T: 01778 382762 | April 2018

Want something to do with the kids over Easter?
F
ilms are an obvious choice for Easter entertainment, so here are a few little gems that will not only keep the children happy, but will also entertain you parents as well: The Book of Life (U): Based on the Mexican celebration of Day of the Dead, this animated story follows 3 friends battling inner demons and a rampaging baddie. With thought provoking script and some genuine heart behind the story, Book of Life has great music and action for everyone. One for the whole family. A more entertaining version of Coco! Flight of the Navigator (U): A story about a young boy who is mistakenly dropped off by a super intelligent alien in the wrong year after being studied; 10 years late in fact. Havoc ensues as the unlikely pairing escape in a state of the art space ship. If you liked ET, you will love this 1986 classic.
Zootopia (PG): A calm metropolis of mammals live and work together in peace until a mysterious case throws everything they know into jeopardy. A superb watch, with plenty of hidden messages about self-belief, positivity and more. Great for everyone to watch. Watch if you loved Monsters Inc. Big Hero 6 (PG): When his brother is killed by a masked assailant, super intelligent Hiro uses his brother Tadashi’s medical marvel robot to find the masked man. With the help of Tadashi’s co-workers and friends, this group of unlikely superheroes use their intellect to find them. With some powerful messages amassed between some sizzling animation sequences. Watch if you loved Kung Fu Panda The Sandlot Kids (U): A heart-warming film set in suburban America and centred around a group of baseball playing kids. Following them through a series of funny and touching adventures, things go awry when the boys hit a baseball over a feared neighbour’s fence and must get it back before daylight runs out. A fantastic film. Watch if you loved The Mighty Ducks
Honourable mentions to The Mighty Ducks (PG), Little Giants (U), Drop Dead Fred (12), UP (U), An American Tail (U), Star Wars IV A New Hope (PG),The Goonies (PG) and The Wizard of Oz (U).
