ith summer here, that refreshing jug of Pimm’s is set to be a tabletop essential for al fresco feasts. The quintessentially English beverage boasts a recognisable tawny colour and a delicious blend of citrus fruits, offering a familiar taste of summer.

How to make the perfect Pimm’s

Apparently, Pimm’s isn’t just for drinking on a deliciously hot summer’s day! Who knew?

Other dynamic ways to use Pimm’s

1

FRUIT FUSION Don’t overload your Pimm’s with fruit. Instead, pick a few strong flavours that complement each other. An unusual flavour combination that works well is pomegranate and basil. Or, take your Pimm’s to super-food heights with the quirky addition of trendy Acai berries.

2

HERBAL REMEDY If you’re using herbs like basil and mint, crush the leaves before adding th≠em to your drink to maximise the aroma and perfectly seasoned your Pimm’s.

3

CUE THE CRANBERRY Those with a sweet tooth mi add a splash of cranberry juice, or flavoured lemonade for an extra boost.

4

ICE, ICE BABY Get creative by freezing flowers into your ice cube tray. However, limit the ice cubes to ensure the Pimm’s isn’t too diluted.

5

SUGAR-COAT IT Sprinkle fruit pieces with sugar and let them stand for 10 minutes in a little lemon juice so they macerate before adding them to the liquid to avoid soggy fruit.

Pimm’s scones

Soak fruit in Pimm’s and add a couple of spoonfuls of Pimm’s to the cream

Pimm’s Jelly

It doesn’t get much more British than jelly for dessert. These jars are layered with Pimm’s jelly and cream for a portable picnic treat.

Pimm’s ice-pops These grownup ices are filled with strawberries, cucumber and, of course, Pimm’s for a refreshing party popsicle.

Delight T R O P I CA L

Parveen The Spice Queen presents us with the delectably delicious Mango Lassi

S

ummer is here and for me that means enjoying those gorgeous summer salads and fruits. When most people think of summer fruits, they usually think of strawberries, raspberries, honeydew and watermelon, all of which are divine on a hot summer’s day. However for me, it’s all about mangoes... I just love mangoes. There are many types available but I prefer the Indian/ Kashmiri mangoes, as they tend to be less fibrous and are as sweet as nectar. I often make mango lassi with them. My husband thinks it sacrilege to obliterate them to an inch of their life but I disagree - well it wouldn’t be a marriage if I didn’t! His favourite way of eating them is simply chill, slice and enjoy.

For the more adventurous amongst you, try my recipe for yourself and hopefully, you will agree with me - it’s a perfect cooling palate cleanser after a spicy meal. It’s simple to make too, just add all the ingredients into a blender and blitz - it’s a doddle!

Mango Lassi - Method

Ingredients

Prep Time: 5 mins Serves: approx 6

2 fresh mangoes (di ced into 1cm pieces)

1. To dice the mango; carefully cut down either side of the fattest part, sometimes called the ‘cheek.’ Take that piece and score lengthways and widthways, making small squares. Turn the skin inside out and you should have a mango that looks like a hedgehog. Cut out the juicy little cubes of mango.

100ml single cream

2. Add the mango pieces into a blender together with the cream, milk, yoghurt and sugar and blitz together until smooth. 3. Have a taste and add a little more sugar if you like it sweeter, or milk if you prefer a thinner consistency. 4. Chill, pour into tall glasses and serve. For more of Parveen’s recipes or to buy her cook book, log onto www.ParveenTheSpiceQueen.com

200ml full fat milk 400ml natural unsweetened yogh

urt

2 tsp caster sugar

Parveen’s Top Tip Although fresh mangoes are best, you can use tinned, frozen or even mango pulp. For a richer flavour, you can add ice cream and if you are watching the calories, you can always leave out the cream and use semi-skimmed milk.

Words by Jenny Garford

A review of another local gem serving up hearty meals - The Ramblewood Inn, Orton.

T

he Ramblewood Inn has on one of the most enviable locations in Peterborough, adjoining the splendid Orton Hall Hotel at the end of a leafy drive. Stone-built and full of character, the Ramblewood was originally part of the Hall’s stable block and there are interesting and quirky nods to the building’s history everywhere. My guest and I took advantage of the beautiful sunny weather on our visit and sat outside on a table overlooking the wooded parking area, watching people come and go from the hotel; it was surprisingly peaceful given its suburban location.

The Ramblewood’s menu is chocked full of dishes, with something to suit everyone - including crab cakes, prawn cocktail and sweet potato falafel starters. We enjoyed a tomato and halloumi salad dressed with pesto (£6.50) and the Ramblewood sharing tower (£14.95) - sticky wings, ribs, wedges, garlic bread and more, served on a three-tiered stand, much like an afternoon tea. The main menu is full of classic pub grub - think scampi and chips, hunter’s chicken, burgers, steaks and a humungous ‘Chef’s Special’ mixed grill (£21.95) - a plate piled high with rump and gammon steaks, chicken breast, 2 sausages, black pudding, peas, tomato, mushroom, and a fried egg - definitely one for those with an appetite! I was delighted to see that vegetarians and vegans are catered for, and that jackfruit tacos (£12.95) have made their way on to the menu!

I opted for a plate of sticky ribs (£14.25), served with chips and smothered in bbq sauce while my friend ordered a Miss Spicy burger (£13.95) - cajun-style chicken breast, topped with bacon, cheese and jalapeños, served in a brioche bun. I’m not a massive fan of chicken burgers, but I had a taste and it was really good! The Ramblewood serve a number of other burgers which I’d keenly go back and try - wild boar and chorizo, venison and marmalade, and at Thursdays Burger Club (burger and chips £10.95) they serve The Godfather - mini meatballs in tomato sauce, topped with mozzarella!

This is a lovely pub, with good food and a welcoming atmosphere; portions are big, so go hungry!

We somehow managed to fit in dessert - rich fudge cake with ice cream, and sticky toffee pudding with custard, followed by coffee and a cart to wheel us home!

GET SOME GOOD

Find out how to eat your way to a good night’s sleep!

M

ore and more research is pointing to the importance of a good night’s sleep in performance, mental and physical health, appetite and even cell renewal. But for many of us, modern life seems to be an endless struggle to fall asleep, followed by a morning fight against grogginess.

We try to counter our disrupted sleep cycles with caffeine and sweet treats, only to find our sleep disrupted even further. So which everyday ingredients help, rather than hinder a peaceful night? Oats

Good-quality sleep is more important than the amount of sleep that you get

Oily fish Salmon and tuna are high in vitamin B6, which is instrumental in making serotonin and melatonin, hormones that relax you and prepare you for sleep. They’re also universally known to be good for you in a variety of different ways, and good health contributes to good sleep. Experts recommend eating at least two portions of oily fish a week. Chocolate

As well as being a good way to start the day, oats can be a great way to end the day. Surprisingly, your body requires energy to sleep, as well as to be active. The slow-releasing carbohydrates in oats drip-feed your cells with energy throughout the night. Herbal teas

Chocolate can boost serotonin, helping you sleep, but eat too much and you might be kept up by the naturally occurring caffeine content. Raw (70% cocoa) chocolate preserves all the nutrients in fermented cacao that are sometimes eliminated through pasteurisation. It uses coconut sugar, a gentler and less refined alternative to cane, and tastes delicious too.

Hydrating and soothing, herbal teas are a great alternative to a normal cuppa and can have a wide range of digestive and calming effects. They will also help you minimise your caffeine intake.

Sunny Days I H OT

Enjoy the summer sun but know how to protect yourself too.

just love summer. As well as being born in June, it’s my favourite season of the year and although most people love the warmth and light of the sun, I am here to share with you that too much sun exposure can significantly damage human skin. Most people already know there are certain risks involved and, in this issue, I would like to affirm and also highlight what we should all be aware of. As we know, the sun’s heat dries out areas of unprotected skin and depletes the skin’s supply of natural lubricating oils. In addition, the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) radiation can cause burning and long-term changes in the skin’s structure. The most common types of sun damage to the skin are: • Dry skin — Sun-exposed skin can gradually lose moisture and essential oils, making it appear dry, flaky and prematurely wrinkled, even in younger people.

and skin cancers. This is because your skin contains less of a dark pigment called melanin, which helps to protect the skin from the effects of UV radiation. Prevention • You can help to prevent sun-damaged skin by taking the following steps: • Apply a sunscreen before you go outdoors. Choose a water-resistant sunscreen that has a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30, with a broad spectrum of protection against both UV-A and UV-B rays. Be sure to reapply often to avoid sweating off or washing off the sunscreen. • Use a sunblock on your lips. Choose a product that has been specially formulated for the lips, with a sun protection factor of 20 or more. • Limit your time outdoors when the sun is at its peak (from about 10am – 3pm in most parts of the continental United States). • Wear sunglasses with UV light protection. • Be aware that some medicines and skin care products can increase your skin’s risk of UV damage. These include certain antibiotics, as well as some prescription medicines. If you are taking a prescription medication and you normally spend a great deal of time outdoors, ask your health care professional whether you should take any special precautions to avoid sun exposure. Also, be aware that certain non-prescription skin care products containing alpha-hydroxy acids can make your skin more vulnerable to damage from sunlight.

• Sunburn — Sunburn is the common name for the skin injury that appears immediately after the skin is exposed to UV radiation. Mild sunburn causes only painful reddening of the skin, but more severe cases can produce tiny fluid-filled bumps (vesicles) or larger blisters. Over a lifetime, repeated episodes of sunburn and unprotected sun exposure can increase a person’s risk of malignant melanoma and other forms of skin cancer. As a rule, if you have fair skin and light eyes, you are at greater risk of sun-related skin damage

By being consciously aware of how to be safe and protected in the sun, we can all still have as much fun as possible and be protected at the same time. Wishing you all a wonderful sun-kissed summer

Curtains gather dust and dirt and should be cleaned regularly to help avoid allergies and to keep them in good condition.

clothes, if not treated quickly, the stains can get darker. If you do get a sunscreen stain either:

Ask Peters’ Cleaners

Q - Does dry cleaning get rid of body odour ? A - If you have clothes that smell of smoke or body odour then dry cleaning is unlikely to make the clothes smell fresh again. Whilst dry cleaning is excellent at eliminating dirt, it does not eliminate smells; washing is more effect ive. Some dry cleaners have the exper tise to wash even those items with dry clean only labels to ensure your clothes have a fresh smell.

do nothing to the stain (do not rub or treat in any way) and get it to a professional, especially if the item is dry clean only. As sunscreen is an oil based stain, dry cleaning is an effective form of removing it.

treat at home - but act fast! Scrape off any excess cream with a clean spoon then put talc, corn starch or sand (if you are at the beach) to absorb any excess oil. Leave for 15 minutes then shake off.

Sunscreen stains Try to avoid getting sunscreen and suntan lotions on your clothes as it can be tricky to remove. Apply sunscreen and let it dry before dressing and always wash your hands after applying it. Sunscreens contain oils to make them moistureresistant and once they have stained

If you have soft water, treat the stain with a prewash stain remover or some heavy-duty liquid detergent. Work it in with your fingers then leave for 15 minutes. Wash according to the care label. Do not tumble dry if the stain remains as heat will set the stain in. If you have hard water, beware! Washing a sunscreen stain in hard water can make the stain go brown. Use softened or distilled water only. Also avoid excessively hot water temperatures and chlorine bleach.

fabrics check the care label. If in any doubt, seek professional advice. It is not advisable to apply water to dry clean only fabrics as water may shrink, distort and discolour some fabrics. Out partying? Your bag might need a clean too! We love this satin clutch bag. We cleaned a very similar cream coloured one in June. It came in with drink stains but left the shop looking like new. hether you’ve booked a week or two in the sun or have planned a short family break, don’t forget to add home security and property protection to your checklist. We can all greatly reduce the risk of burglary by taking a few simple security measures to help make our home less attractive to thieves. Before you go on holiday: • Cancel milk and newspaper deliveries

• Set up automatic timer switches to turn your lights on when it gets dark • Register for the Royal Mail’s ‘keepsake’ service • Cut front and back lawns and trim back plants • Don’t discuss holiday plans on social media • Ask a trusted neighbour to watch over your home whilst you’re away

How to avoid the post-holiday burglary blues or a domestic drama

Words by Eileen Le Voi, Safe Local Trades • Ensure all windows and doors, gates, garages and sheds are locked • Keep items that could be used to break into your property such as ladders, tools and wheelie bins stored safely away If you are considering installing or upgrading any CCTV security, lighting or alarm systems – or even changing the locks – Safe Local Trades has many reputable traders who can help across the PE postcode areas. However, as well as protecting your property from burglars, it’s also worth giving some thought to preventing domestic dramas whilst you’re away. Research has shown that around 25% of Brits have come back from their holiday to a home emergency, with water leaks the most common problem by those who have been faced with

an unexpected disaster. Boiler breakdowns, pest infestations, and appliance breakdowns are among some of the other unwanted home-coming dramas. Turning off the water supply at the stopcock, switching off the boiler and unplugging all electrical items before going away are sound preventative measures. However,

Research has shown that around 25% of Brits have come back from their holiday to a home emergency. if you are unfortunate enough to come home to face the holiday blues because of a household crisis, Safe Local Trades has recommended professionals from electricians, bug busters, plumbers and more at www.safelocaltrades.com.

CHILDREN’S SHOE-FITTING

SCHOOLWEAR

Growing feet

For us It’s all about quality, so here are some of the unique features of our schoolwear:

Up to the age of four, your child’s feet can grow by two whole sizes each year. By the time they start school this will slow to one size a year. Checking whether your child needs new shoes is vital to aid rapidly developing feet.

Teflon® fabric protector DuPont™ Teflon® fabric protector is an invisible force field that helps protect our clothing from spills, stains, blemishes and everyday messy mishaps children encounter. The Teflon®fabric protector offers protection without affecting the look, feel or breathability of the cloth. Look out for the Teflon® fabric protector logo on our school uniform range. Any product featuring this logo is easy to clean, easy to care for and helps to lower the impact on the environment. Non-iron

Our service If you think your child has had a growth spurt, pop into our children’s shoe department where we’d be happy to check. Our trained Partners will measure the length and width of both feet and select a choice of shoes for your child to try on to find which style best suits their foot shape. Book an appointment All our fitters are professionally trained by either Clarks or Start-rite and will be able to advise you on the best shoe style and brand for your child.

Co mfort, practicality and longevity

Our Schoolwear department in Peterborough is located in Childrenswear on the Upper ground floor.

Non-iron fabrics are what every parent wants. Made with taped seams, you just need to hang the shirt or blouse up immediately after washing them, then let them dry naturally and they’ll be wrinkle free. Adjustable waist Bands Our trousers and skirts come with adjustable waists – perfect for growth spurts and extra comfortable for active kids (excludes senior skirts). Girls’ School Uniform Our school skirts provide comfort, practicality and longevity – perfect for keeping you and your child happy. Options with adjustable waists will fit them as they grow, while special fabrics like Teflon® Shield Pro+ repel stains and reduce drying times. Select neat pleats or A-line shapes and look out for sweet additions like bows and buttons – and multi-packs will ensure you’re never caught short on a school day. Boys’ School Uniform Shop our range of Boys’ School Uniform, from school trousers and shirts, to blazers, jumpers and shorts.

Your soil! S OA K

Tips on when, how and how often to water your garden to beat the heat.

I

t’s been long, hot summer and gardens are looking a bit worn in by the heat. Many gardeners don’t know how to water their gardens. Here’s some advice from those in the know. When should you water? Don’t water in the heat of the day. Water in the morning or in the evening when it’s cooler. Watering when it is cool reduces evaporation and makes the water available for your plant when it needs it the most – during the hottest part of the day. Where should you water? Water at the base of your plants because overhead watering can splash water on the leaves of your plant which can cause diseases. Keeping your plant

leaves as dry as possible helps control common garden diseases such as powdery mildew, blight, leaf spot and many more.

sessions, water your garden less frequently, but water slowly, deeply, for longer periods of time.

How often should you water? The frequency of watering really depends on the weather. In hot, dry weather you will have to water more often than you would in cold or rainy weather.

Check the moisture level of your soil frequently to determine whether or not you need to water your plants.

Check the moisture level of your soil frequently to determine whether or not you need to water your plants. This is very easy to do either with a moisture meter or even with your finger - simply stick your finger in the soil as far as you can reach it at the base of your plants. If the soil feels wet, you don’t need to water, if it feels dry, water your plants. Rather than quick watering

The best way to water is with a drip irrigation system because you get a nice, slow, steady drip that sinks deep into the roots of your plants. Invest in a timer for automatic watering but be sure to check your garden regularly to see if you are watering at appropriate intervals. If you are watering with a nozzle, water slowly at the base of your plants, let the water sink in, then repeat, letting the water sink again so the it gets all the way to the roots. Check garden daily and mulch Mulch, mulch, mulch with shredded leaves, straw, or quality wood chips. This cuts down on water evaporation, which means that you have to water less often, especially during the long days of summer.

With care FOOD SERVED

If you are looking for a home for yourself or a loved one, find out what makes Clayburn Court different.

A

t Anchor’s Clayburn Court Care Home, we take great pride in the range of high quality, seasonally focused and nutritionally balanced meals our chef makes available to residents on a daily basis. We are committed to making mealtimes a sociable and pleasurable part of the day. The meals we serve are created, not just with a deep understanding of each resident’s specific needs, but with an awareness of the important personal role food plays in our lives. After all, we all know that when it comes to food, individual tastes and preferences are everything. That’s why at Clayburn Court, our catering team makes an effort to get out of the kitchen and speak to the people they cook for every day, finding out about their likes and dislikes and discovering more and more about the people they cook for. We all have strong memories associated with certain recipes, foods or specific meals, and for our chefs, it’s important that the food they serve isn’t anonymous.

Our catering team makes an effort to get out of the kitchen and speak to the people they cook for every day We understand the importance of ambience and ensure that our dining room décor helps to stimulate appetite and creates an enjoyable atmosphere. We

also recognise that mealtimes are a great opportunity for social interaction and involvement. At Anchor, all our chefs attend in-house, nationally recognised training programmes and we use the Standard Nutritional Assessment check at Clayburn Court and all of our homes. Anchor is proud to have won national recognition for its food and catering service and strives to continually enhance the dining experience for residents across all of our care homes. Number of older people left without social care support hits record high New figures have revealed that the number of older people in England and Wales without social care support has hit a record high. According to official statistics from Age UK, approximately 1.4 million people aged 65 or over have needs such as getting dressed, washed or out of bed which are not being met by the NHS or Social Care system. The charity Director of Age UK, Caroline Abrahams said: “Older people around the country are being very badly let down by the catastrophic lack of government funding for social care. “Our new analysis echoes what we hear all around the country: it is getting ever harder to access care if you need it and increasing numbers

of frail, ill, older people are being left to manage alone. “It is profoundly shocking that 1.4 million older people, one in seven of the entire older population, now has some degree of unmet need, and the numbers are rising quite fast.” Nick Ash, Managing Director of Will and Probate Services reacted to the report. “The statistics are a real wake up call for those of us in our 50’s and 60’s. We need to get our plans in order.” He continued “Having experienced the social care crisis first hand in my own family, I have come to the conclusion that the only way to ensure that future needs are met is to have a plan in place that retains control of both

assets and decision making within the family unit.” A spokesperson for the Department of Health and Social Care said “The government has committed to a long-term plan with a sustainable multi-year settlement for the NHS to help it manage growing patient demand. Health and social care are two sides of the same coin and reforms must be aligned. That’s why our forthcoming green paper will be published in the autumn alongside the NHS plan.” This will be the third green paper of the last ten years. You can’t afford to wait for the government. Take advice on making your plans today and call Will & Probate Services on 01778 382723.

Charity abseil raises thousands for good causes Peterborough Cathedral and Shine, the charity which supports people affected by spina bifida and hydrocephalus, have announced that their charity abseil in May has raised a total of over £37,600. “We are absolutely thrilled with this total,” said the Very Revd Chris Dalliston, Dean of Peterborough, adding “we’d like to say a big thank you to everyone who took part and to all the people who sponsored them.” The funds will be shared equally between two organisations helping to maintain the 900 year old Cathedral for future generations and provide specialist help to those affected by spina bifida and hydrocephalus.

Craftmanship in the making Stories of osier peelers, Woodston’s basket works, and the city man who patented the General Post Office hamper!

S

ellers Basket Works, Wharf Road, Woodston was a profitable business in the mid to late Victorian period. The business was started by Ebenezer Sellers who was born in 1846 at the Toll House on London Road (junction of Oundle Road) where his father Joseph was the Toll Gate Keeper, as well as running his small basket-making business. Ebenezer served his apprenticeship with his father’s basket business and soon became the senior partner. Sellers jnr grew his own osiers (willows) when he purchased the lease from the Marquis of Huntly on 25 March 1874 for the existing 44 acres of osier beds from Woodston to Botolph Bridge and Orton Longueville. The willows were brought down river by barge and the last few yards were transported by donkey. Most of these willow fields/beds

Sellers were known for their wicker and splint basketry making, using willows and reeds to make hampers predominantly - but also

shopping baskets, confectionary trays and bakers baskets etc. The osier peelers used a mental tool to removed bark from willow rods or osiers which were used in basket weaving, and this work was usually performed by women and children. They were also known as withy peelers. The basket making business started to boom when Ebenezer won government contracts at home and abroad for railway companies and the General Post Office. Other customers included agricultural workers, the military in India and the British Army, Smithfield market and the domestic market for linen baskets. By all accounts Ebenezer was a shrewd businessman and patented a design for a Post Office hamper during the 1890s which brought in so many orders that he had to employ an additional sixty people at his Woodston works. The growth in basket making meant he had to purchase 10 tons of osiers (willows) annually from

the Corporation Farm at Fengate to top up the quantity needed for the number of orders gained. Sadly, the firm suffered a major fire in April 1922. However, this was not to be the last of their woes because as time went by the business was affected by substantial changes in the way the Post Office and other markets progressed. For example, the Post Office stopped buying hampers

because they started to send parcels in bags (just like their letters), plus the railway also stopped buying wicker hampers to transport meat and poultry and other perishable goods. The latter was rendered unnecessary as refrigerated vans were being introduced and this was considered much more hygienic with even temperature control. Thus, Sellers

41

Basket Works witnessed a huge decline in orders with only pigeon fanciers, fruit growers and laundry companies keeping the basket trade viable into the 1930s. Ebenezer’s son Joseph took over the company at the end of the First World War and continued in business until 1932. After Sellers Basket Works closed the building was used as a warehouse. It still stands today at the bottom of Wharf Road but is occupied by Complete Framing Ltd - part of the commercial units on the Wharf Industrial Estate. Another acknowledgement to the Sellers Basket Works’ existence is the nearby Ebenezer’s Social Club in Grove Street, Woodston. Next Issue: The story behind our city’s WW1 recruiting office.

ooking for an activity for the kids which will give them new skills, independence and selfconfidence, not to mention new friendships and some once-in-alifetime experiences? Then look no further - Peterborough Youth Choir provides all this, and more, to children aged 7 and upwards. Better yet, it’s completely free! Directed by William Prideaux, Peterborough Youth Choir is the city’s leading youth music group, providing professional tuition and exceptional performance opportunities to over 40 members aged between 7 and 19 from schools across the city and beyond. Their performances have been broadcast on BBC Radio Cambridgeshire and in 2016 they were featured on BBC One’s Songs of Praise. Peterborough Youth Choir has collaborated with worldclass musicians including the King’s Singers, the BBC Concert Orchestra and the Central Band of the RAF, among many others. Members of the choir have also performed in the national tours of Evita starring Marti Pellow, Joseph and his Tecnicolour Dream Coat, starring X Factor winner Joe McElderry and Dreamboats and

Always a highlight of the choir’s busy schedule is their annual residential weekend at Buckden every February half term, which, as well as being lots of fun, enables them to rehearse intensively, making remarkable progress in a very short period of time (even if they haven’t always had much sleep!). The Peterborough Youth Choir boys also recently enjoyed a five-day trip to Cumbria, performing highlights from their repertoire at Carlisle Cathedral. Peterborough Youth Choir has an excellent track-record of preparing singers for regional and national opportunities. As well as going on to join the city’s awardwinning adult choirs Peterborough Male Voice Choir and Peterborough Voices, members

have successfully auditioned for the National Youth Choirs of Great Britain, and some have gone on to specialist music schools and gained places with Durham Cathedral Choir and the choir of King’s College, Cambridge. Rehearsals are at All Saints Church Hall, All Saints Road, Peterborough PE1 2UL on Wednesdays during term time from 4-6.30pm, supervised by a team of enhanced DBS checked chaperones. The choir is split into three groups - junior, intermediate and senior - so that singers can rehearse at their own level and progress through the choir as they develop musically. New members are always welcome! So, what are you waiting for? Get the kids signed up now and in a few short months you could be watching them perform in Christmas Magic in the spectacular setting of Peterborough Cathedral. And next year…who knows! Brian Jones – Local Historian

The 18th century moves into the 19th century – that calls itself the 1800 hundreds!

J

oseph Robinson had taken control of the King’s Mill in the late 1780s. In November 1800 his name is on a Royal Exchange Fire Insurance Policy for: ‘Water Corn Mill House; Granaries and Offices all adjoin situate in All Saints, Stamford. Stone built and slated - £800. On standing and going gears, millstones and machines therein £200. Warranted - no steam engine.’ Ten years later, in November 1810, the Mercury newspaper reported that: ‘On Saturday night the King’s Mill at Cliffe was been blown down during a storm. Mr Gamble was reported as the occupant.’ Another of the mills of Stamford was Hudd’s Mill and, in the Stamford Mercury of 28th January 1814 we find: ‘On Saturday last Mr Job Topley, an industrious man in the employ of Mr. Smith, miller of Stamford, was employed in cleating the inside of the watermill wheel at Hudd’s Mill. In setting the machinery in motion he accidentally slipped and

was precipitated into the recess of one of the ladles. Unfortunately one hit his neck and another caught him across the loins by which he was instantly killed. This happened in the presence of a young man who was assisting him to move the wheel. The young man narrowly escaped the same fate.’

Most of the ancient buildings of Stamford had long gone by 1800, but one housed poor pilgrims to Jerusalem and survived until 1818 opposite to St Mary’s church. Most of the ancient buildings of Stamford had long gone by 1800 but one – the Augustinian hospital of St Sepulchre with its chapel dedicated to St Mary Magdalen housed poor pilgrims to Jerusalem and survived until 1818 opposite to St Mary’s church.

Let’s now consider a story of this period that happened in August 1817 in Deeping St James. We are told of two boys – one aged 8 and the other 10 – who were caught by the Parish Constable one Saturday and were brought before the magistrate. What had they done wrong? They had stolen a neighbour’s apples! The punishment was to be that the Parish Constable shall give each boy a lash of the whip at the Cross in Deeping St James as an example to others. BUT – while he was attempting to execute the instruction, the father and mother of the youngest boy living close by had their own plans. They flew at the constable and ‘an affray’ began in which the officer got knocked down and had his staff taken from him before anyone could – or would – help. Other Constables and assistants arrived and a ‘battle royal’ of an hour or so took place. When order returned the father was put in the stocks – but because he had a ‘terrible broken head’ he was not left there. However – the children escaped punishment that evening but the elder was whipped on Monday; the younger on Tuesday and the father stood bound over to the sessions for the assault.

Cinema vs Streaming Cinema. The best way to watch a film. Or is it?

Words by Richard Stevens

A

s the modern world evolves, so does the way in which we watch films. As consumers, our habits have changed and the emergence of streaming businesses like Netflix, Amazon and now YouTube et al have just added an additional layer to our habits; the comfort of our own home. Saying that 10 years ago would make it sound like you were buying hooky DVD’s from the guy who comes around every fortnight. But with so much power going to the likes of Netflix etc, is the cinema experience dying? Some would argue yes. Others would argue no. So, who is right? That’s a tough one! With the inflated prices of tickets to mirror the inflated budgets of films today (all because of the publics need to see a ‘spectacle’ apparently) as well as the Cinema businesses need to turn a profit and hence their extortionate prices for snacks at their concession stands (you need a loan to buy a decent amount now) people seem to be turning to staying at home and waiting for the films to show up. Or so you would think…

The cinema experience is not one you can match at home. Every time I have been to the cinema it has been packed. Granted I have only been to see ‘blockbuster’ films, but the overpriced tickets and snacks still have not stopped people from enjoying films on a super

large screen with surround sound and fellow film lovers. That is an experience you cannot match at home on your TV with a sound bar. But then, isn’t it just subjective? And therein lies the issue. You see, the cinema experience is subjective, something that Hollywood hasn’t yet grasped. With the emergence of Netflix original films and shows; through subscription payments of as little as £8 per month, and the same with Amazon etc, cinema cannot really compete without the big blockbusters to prop up the extraordinary amount of average films that are marketed as being the ‘best film this year’, which pretty much every film is labelled as, in a way to entice consumers in. In reality, the majority only really care about the blockbusters which, in most cases, only ever satisfy a small minority because Hollywood doesn’t understand consumer trends anymore, and neither do cinema businesses. It all comes down to marketing and playing on either nostalgia, twisting of words, or the very clever editing of trailers. Or it’s just Ryan Reynolds on a one-man mission to give gratuitous anti-hero Deadpool the limelight he needs. Marketing is now king, with the quality of the film almost secondary from Hollywood’s perspective. Netflix et al have a different model; Cloverfield Paradox anyone? They understand their target audience, do Hollywood? So, is the cinema really the best way to watch a film anymore? Well, I guess that really depends on the type of film fan you are. And again, that is subjective. Richard S hosts The Film & TV Show, every Monday at 7pm on Hereward Community Radio

Extravaganza MEDITERRANEAN

One of the biggest celebrations of Italian culture is coming back to Peterborough

T

he tenth annual Peterborough Italian Festival will be held in Cathedral Square on 8th and 9th September 2018 and returning for the event is celebrity chef and restaurateur Aldo Zilli. Aldo, famed for his TV appearances and string of Zillithemed restaurants, will share his culinary expertise and sign books for Italian food lovers. The festival is organised by Peterborough’s Italian Community Association and supported by Peterborough City Council, offering a wide range of tantalising sweet and savoury food. Aldo said: “I’m very pleased to have been asked to attend the Italian Festival in Peterborough again this year, especially as it is the tenth

A wide range of tantalising sweet and savoury food anniversary of the event. “I’m looking forward to spending the weekend there with my family. It will be great to see the lovely people of Peterborough again where there is such a thriving Italian community. “I will be cooking there for you and demonstrating how I prepare and make the dishes. See you in September!” Aldo will be present on both days of the festival and his appearance adds to a bumper list of activities planned for the weekend, with the full line up to

be confirmed closer to the event. As in previous years the Mediterranean extravaganza will also feature an Italian market, classic Italian cars and motorcycles, confectionery, icecream, pasta, football and boxing demonstrations, scooters and lots more.

Annette Joyce, the council’s service director for environment and economy, said: “Italy is one of the most cultural and historical countries in the world and it is tremendous to see it celebrated so well once again by Peterborough’s Italian community for the benefit of the city. “I am delighted that Aldo Zilli is coming back and sure that he will add an extra ray of Mediterranean sunshine to an already packed weekend of music, dance, food, drink and more.” The festival runs from 12noon to 5pm on both days.
