appy June readers! I hope you are enjoying the sunshine and the holidays. As it is that time of year, we have many features this month on local events and places to go. For great ideas and information about what events are happening for families, children and adults, there is superb Facebook page called ‘We Love Peterborough’, and it covers events all over the area to include Stamford, Deeping, Bourne, Spalding, Oakham and of course the city. Join the page to receive regular updates and post your events too! To ensure that we keep our bodies in tip-top shape we have our regular features on eating healthily by nutritionist Victoria Francis and getting and keeping fit from Dave Austin, personal trainer. Don’t forget about the two amazing outdoor pool complexes we have on our doorstep; Bourne and Peterborough – volunteers work really hard to make the venues safe and fun for everyone, and when the sun is shining where else better to cool off and splash around. One date we must not forget this month is Father’s Day, the time we spoil all those lovely dads out there with breakfast in bed or a nice lunch in one of the many fabulous restaurants we have locally. Enjoy the read!

e t i p s e R l a r Ru Check out these traditional country pubs, which are no more than a stone’s throw away The Black Horse

S

et just off the A605, this handsome village pub offers great food in a comfy, stylish setting; the pub has several dining rooms around a central bar area. Classic pub dishes like the house burger, with smoked cheddar, bacon, onion jam, pickles, ‘slaw and chips (£14) are served alongside dishes like braised ox cheek with potato dauphinoise (£18), or roast chicken with beetroot, celeriac, and brown butter potato rosti (£16). For pud try the vanilla cheesecake with Earl grey ice cream, jelly and poached plums (£7). The Black Horse also has a pretty terrace and one of the most beautiful beer gardens in the area. 14 Overend Road, Elton, Peterborough PE8 6RU theblackhorseatelton.co.uk

The Bertie Arms

W

ith its traditional thatch and chocolate box charm, The Bertie Arms has serious curb appeal. Built in 1681, the pub is said to be one of the oldest in the county, however it has been given a contemporary makeover by the new landlords, Katie and James, creating a light, bright eclectic vibe. The food is more traditional with plenty of pub favourites, but it’s the epic B.A. mixed grill (£23) and the Plate Full of Lincolnshire (£14.50) that got us excited - Lincolnshire rarebit and sausage, Nelson’s pork pie, haslet, chine, cheese, plum bread, brassica fritters and apple chutney - guaranteed to satisfy the hungriest of patrons. Or, pop in for coffee and enjoy a selection of homemade cakes and bakes. Bertie Lane, Uffington PE9 4SZ 01780 766400 thebertiearms.co.uk

ith its striking cornflower-blue exterior, The White Horse is hard to miss, not that you’d want to, as the popular village pub has been drawing in the crowds with its modern-rustic interior and inviting atmosphere since its refurbishment in 2013; it’s a truly smart and cosy place to sink a pint. The food is equally as splendid with a seasonal menu that includes game shot on the landlord’s farm, as well as some imaginative dishes like beetroot jelly served with pickled shallots, walnuts and parsley meringue (£6.25), maple glazed pork rib, with charred pineapple, anna potatoes and creamed kale (£15.95), or the whipped coconut panna cotta with passion fruit granita and white rum jelly (£6.95).

Summer Sizzling Lamb Shish Kebabs

S

ummer is here and barbeque season is upon us. I am not much of a meat eater but there is something about the chargrilled smokey flavours of barbequed meat that I really like. I am quite flexible when it comes to eating meat and vegetarian food, so I suppose I am a what they call a ‘flexatarian.’

Method Prep Time: 10 mins Cooking time: 6 mins 1. Mince the chicken in a blender then place into a bowl with all of the ingredients (apart from the oil). Mix thoroughly using your hands. 2. Moisten your hands with a little oil. Take 50g of the mixture and shape into burgers using the palms of your hands and fingers. 3. Add a few drops of oil into a non-stick pan and seal the meat for 30 seconds on each side.

This summer, try my recipe for these lamb shish kebabs. They are spicy, succulent and barbeque beautifully. I am actually not a huge fan of red meat but you would be forgiven in thinking so, if you ever saw me eat one of these. I love them so much, I will have them for brunch, as I can’t wait for lunch.

Ingredients 800g lamb mince 200g chicken mince 1 finely grated onion 2 green chillies finely chopped 1 tsp of salt (or to taste) 3 tsp coriander powder 2 tbsp chopped fresh coriander 2 tbsp vegetable oil Makes 18 to 20

4. Cook on the barbeque for 3 mins on each side. Serve with mint dip - you can always make a cheat’s version. Just add a level teaspoon of

ordinary mint sauce and 1/4 teaspoon of salt to 6 tablespoons of yoghurt and stir. Easy! For more recipes and Parveen’s cook book, log onto www. ParveenTheSpiceQueen.com See Parveen at the Cambridgeshire Food and Drink Festival at the Peterborough Arena on Saturday 23rd June at 12pm & Sunday 24th June at 11am Visit www.cambridgeshirefood anddrinkfestival.co.uk for more details

Parveen’s Top Tip My lamb shish kebabs freeze perfectly. To Pan fry - cook for 3 mins on each side in a hot non-stick pan.

Bloat!

Don’t struggle in silence, take some simple measures to help your gut.

I

rritable Bowel Syndrome is a chronic condition that affects 10-20% of the population and can have a significant impact on a person’s quality of life. IBS is typically diagnosed when a host of tests have not been able to diagnose any other disorder. Many people can struggle on for a long time before they seek help, but a visit to your GP and some simple blood tests can help you identify the cause of your symptoms and manage them.

Words by Victoria Francis it reassuring to hear that simple dietary measures can help up to 50% of the IBS population and below are the first steps to take to help address unpleasant gut symptoms:

Do not self-diagnose using the help of Dr Google as symptoms typical of IBS such as bloating, altered bowel habits or tummy pain/cramps can be a sign of other conditions such as Crohn’s disease or Coeliac Disease.

Fatty and Spicy foods Fatty foods (pizza, creamy sauces) and spicy foods (such curries) have been linked with an increase in IBS symptoms. Fat can trigger cramping and stimulate gut contractions contributing to diarrhoea. A good start would be to choose lower fat options and reduce the portion size and frequency of high fat foods in your diet.

For those of you who are struggling to know what to eat, what to avoid etc you might find

Check your caffeine intake Caffeine is a natural laxative and known gut irritant. If you suffer

from diarrhoea and pain you might want to limit your caffeine intake to maximum 2 cups of coffee/tea per day. Coca Cola also contains caffeine. Slowly introduce and swap for caffeine free alternatives such as rooibos, camomile or decaffeinated coffee. Alcohol similarly can act as a gut irritant.

Focus on your fibre intake We all know fibre is good for our health but for people suffering with IBS fibre can make symptoms worse and increase your gas production or frequency of needing to go to the toilet. If constipation is the main problem you might want to try increasing your intake of soluble fibre such as oats and fruits (for example, berries, bananas, oranges). Linseeds have been shown to be IBS-friendly and help with constipation (aim to increase gradually to 1-2 tbsp linseeds per

day on cereals, yogurts). Increase your fibre intake gradually to avoid making symptoms worse and make sure you drink more water too.

Simple dietary measures can help up to 50% of the IBS population If diarrhoea is the issue then reducing your fibre intake can help so choose lower fibre alternatives (for example, white rice, pasta, bread) and remove the skins/pips/seeds from fruit and vegetables and limit your intake of beans.

see how many times you actually chew your food (can you reach the goal of 20 chews?). Take stock of your stress! Stress can play havoc with our gut and is known to trigger IBS symptoms. Nerves in the gut can become highly sensitive when stress signals are sent from the brain. Stress is also thought to influence our gut microbiome, killing off the good bacteria and supporting the bad bacteria to thrive. Exercise, mindfulness or simply making more time for relaxing can help.

17

The last resort If your gut is still causing you havoc the next step is to embark on a low fodmap diet. Fodmaps is the collective name for short chain carbohydrates found in a range of foods such as bread, onions and beans which are not digested by the human body. They pass to our large bowel where they are fermented by our gut bacteria causing pain, discomfort, bloating etc by those who suffer with sensitive tummies. You do not remain on a low fodmap diet forever but following the programme allows you to identify which specific foods can cause you symptoms. PLEASE only trial a low foodmap diet under the guidance and support of a dietitian. A handout from your GP will not suffice! If you would like to know more, let me help. Call me on 07881 805770 or email victoria@ cherrytreenutrition.co.uk

Go slow.. Eating on the go or eating very quickly whilst rushing to get the children ready or to make it to your next appointment can contribute to bloating. When we eat quickly we take in extra air which needs to be expelled somehow. Take time for your meals, try to eat when sitting down at the table/desk and Please mention Scene magazine when responding to advertisements

Fuel your body Let’s talk about food cravings!

Definition: A food craving is an intense desire to consume a specific food, stronger than simple, normal hunger. There is no single explanation for food cravings! Foods that are high in fats, carbohydrates and glucose (chocolate, sweets) affect the brain centres for appetite. This leads to the production of endorphins and interactions with the opioid system in the brain triggering an addictive effect to occur. The consumer of the glucose feels the urge to consume more glucose, much like an alcoholic; because the brain has become conditioned to release ‘happy hormones’ every time glucose is present. This essentially means that the brain physically changes when it becomes used to consuming a mass quantity of a certain chemical so that the brain can release the highest quantity of ‘happy hormones’ as possible. Note, emotional eaters are not emotional eaters – it’s your brain telling you it wants happy hormones! When we consume foods that are not clean (providing nutrients and fuel) for the body, the body remains unsatisfied creating a craving for the ‘fuel’ that is still needed, sometimes even after eating a large amount of food. What these statements say to us is that craving for food is a true physical response from your body and it is and can affect how you eat.

from the responsibility to do something about your health, but can allow you to give yourself a break and start taking steps to making healthier choices with food. You have now been empowered to start taking steps in changing the physical response you might be having. Every day that you make a conscious effort to eat clean, you are making the choice to change! You will re-train your brain to crave healthy foods - the healthier the choices you make, the more your body will realise that it feels great when you do! Your body will want more of those happy hormones, it will know where its new source is and you will enjoy a life full of energy and good health. Words: Fiona McCarthy fiona@myarbonne.co.uk

Summer sun! How Summer can help your fitness goals

S

ummer is around the corner and we’ve already been given a glimpse of some very good weather! From the articles I have done in previous editions of Scene, I’ve discussed blending together the key ingredients of mindset, exercise nutrition and rest to help you get to your goals. This article addresses some of the opportunities that summer gives us, plus some things we need to consider. Summer opportunities • We can exercise outdoors without getting soaked. It’s all too easy when the weather is rubbish to have it curtail your planned walk, run or bike ride. Use the weather to your advantage to get moving outside and get some fresh air.

• We generally feel more positive when the weather is good. A positive mindset gives a much greater likelihood of carrying out our intentions.

• Social events tend to increase. Being around friends and families at things like BBQ’s makes us feel good. Use exercise sessions as an additional way of getting together socially whether that’s a nice long walk, a run or a good bike ride around surrounding villages – there’s plenty of nice routes to take. Things to think about • Hot weather can lead to dehydration, accelerated even more when exercising so it is important to hydrate even more than you would normally. Don’t reach for sugary energy drinks here – plain old water (and lots of it) is far better for you. A dehydrated body doesn’t function as well, reduces energy, is likely to impact quality of sleep and in more severe cases, causes headaches.

• I’m not saying you have to live on salads by any stretch of the imagination but a nice salad can complement a warm day. Be sure to include a good protein source such as chicken, salmon or eggs. They are so quick and easy to make too which fits into our busy schedules nicely.

• The social events we mentioned above are great but apply moderation when it comes to food and drink. Be clear on what you will/ won’t drink beforehand and plan your food as much as you can e.g. with BBQ’s go heavy on salad/vegetables and lean meat or fish and less of the fatty meats such as burgers and sausages. Moderate social events – just because it is nice outside, doesn’t necessarily mean a midweek visit to the beer garden which runs the risk of too much alcohol (and a visit to the fast food place on the way home!).

Dancing up a storm Combining fitness with dance, all for a good cause! Zumba Instructors from across Peterborough came together in April to raise money for the Peterborough & District Samaritans. The 2 hour 80’s themed Zumbathon saw almost 100 Zumba-goers in their finest legwarmers come together to dance to the decades’ top hits. Market Deeping’s instructor Sandy Smith told us “The atmosphere was electric! A room full of smiling, colourful people of all shapes, sizes, age and ability. We are so proud to be able to help our local Samaritans branch continue to do their incredible work.” Along with Michelle Bellamy and Mark Furnell, the 3 instructors raised £870 which was gratefully received by volunteers at the branch.

The Samaritans are available 24 hours a day. Whatever you’re going through, call them free any time, from any phone on

ore people are living longer lives than previously. In fact, there are now over 15 million people aged 60 or over in the UK, that’s 23% of the UK population, and many choose to continue to live in their own home - safe and secure surroundings they have worked their lives for. But with getting older also comes the need for additional help; perhaps to aid with mobility and generally getting around. It may come as no surprise that rogue traders work in this area too, often targeting the most vulnerable in the community. Scams including cold callers claiming to be from their victim’s GP surgery asking for an appointment to discuss the person’s mobility needs, are not uncommon. In many cases, it is believed that unscrupulous firms are buying databases containing details of patients and their medical / mobility needs. Often, they arrange to meet the person in their own home or at a designated place and will persuade them to buy mobility aids (bath lifts,

Adapting to the needs of the elderly and vulnerable, while disabling the rogue traders

scooters or reclining chairs) at inflated prices. More often than not, these aids are unnecessary, inappropriate and always expensive.

Never deal with cold callers – however persuasive they are. But as champions of the consumer, Safe Local Trades and Safe Local Services are able to offer recommended reliable trades/companies, which elderly and less abled people can use with peace of mind. Members work across the PE area, and will make an appointment to talk with customers, their families and loved ones about their needs and expectations, whether that be a low level shower room or wet room, ramps and rails, non-slip flooring, hoists, door widening and much more.

As part of our Safe Local Services offering, we have signed specialist company Bentley Nursing Supplies - a retail outlet providing Mobility Aids, Nursing Equipment and Consumables and Continence Supplies to the general public. This company offers free no obligation home or premises visits with demonstrations and professional assessment of all equipment. So Remember: Never deal with cold callers – however persuasive they are. If you receive a call of this nature, always check with your GP surgery before agreeing to a visit. Likewise, any cold callers offering to carry out work on your property should be met with extreme caution. If you need a recommendation for a safe, approved local tradesperson, visit www.safelocaltrades.co.uk or call 0800 014 1832.

he sunny weather means an end to paws and feet treading dirt through your home so it’s a good time to get your rugs cleaned.

detergent onto the area and then wash as normal. If the stain has not lifted, repeat the process. Remember not to rub as this may damage the fabric.

Like carpets, rugs act as a filter, trapping particles including dead skin cells, animal hair and soil. It is generally recommended that you clean rugs annually as it improves their appearance, increases their longevity and ensures they are hygienic.

Rugs and upholstery cannot usually be put in the washing machine so use a clean cloth to soak up any remaining wine and then dab the affected area with some detergent or if the spillage is on carpet, use carpet cleaner. As with clothing, do not rub, just dab gently and allow to air dry.

Removing a white wine stain White wine, red wine and champagne all contain tannins which can leave a stain on fabrics, but the tannins of white wine and champagne are less dramatic. For dry clean only fabrics, we advise that you do not treat the stain but take it to a Dry Cleaner for treatment. If the item can be washed or you want to attempt to treat a stain yourself, do so as quickly as possible. For clothing, start by running cool water over the affected area. Dab a bit of

Before treating any mark or stain on your clothes or fabrics check the care label. If in any doubt, seek professional advice. It is not advisable to apply water to dry clean only fabrics as water may shrink, distort and discolour some fabrics.

Something different We cleaned the Church Vestments for a local church. With the wedding season upon us they wanted to ensure the altar cloths, surrounds and chasubles looked their best.

Visit www.peterscleaners.co.uk for more information.

Ask Peters’ Cleaners Q - How can I get the smok y barbeque smell off my clothes? A - Dry Cleaning does not get rid of strong odour s so if your clothes smell smoky you will need to wash them or have them washed. Washing dry clean only fabrics can be risky as they may shrink or distort so if you do not want to risk damaging your item you can either: 1. Try airing the item by hanging it on the washi ng line on a breezy day as this will reduce the odour over time. 2. Ask a Dry Cleaner you trust for their advice as they may be able to wash the item without damaging it.

Businesses together BRINGING

Cambridgeshire and Lincolnshire businesses swapping services and advice as well as introducing themselves to other local business owners.

B

ooth Networking is held three times a year at the Peterborough Greyhound stadium and has taken Peterborough by storm by attracting over 120 businesses to their networking events. This tried and tested concept has been hugely successful and as a result has seen many new connections made, with thousands of pounds of business to follow.

The next event is from 10am on Tuesday 19th June and is sponsored by Allia Future Business Centre which offers workspace and support for small businesses and start-ups. All you have to do is simply use one of our booths as your exhibition space to display your company leaflets, business cards, and promotions. Then get networking around the Stadium. We recommend two people from each business, however this isn’t always possible so you can come on your own as we give you a full delegate list with contact details on in case you don’t see everyone you want to.

It is important that we support each other

Hannah Thompson, Business Development Manager of the Greyhound Stadium says, “It is such an informal event that people just enjoy the atmosphere and talking to people and forging relationships. We have had such a great response from local businesses both small and large, attending the events, it is a great community to be a part of”.

Jules Goldsmith, Business Development Executive at Allia, FBC said “We’re delighted to be sponsoring the June 2018 event. We look forward to meeting everyone and greeting first time attendees. It is a credit to Peterborough, a City with a wealth of opportunity”. Planning a holiday?

39

Before you jet off on your travels, make your Holiday Will

P

eople often ask me if our business is seasonal and are quite surprised when I tell them that it is. The sad fact is that more people die during the winter months and hence we tend to be busier with probate. However, there is also a really interesting phenomenon that affects us during the summer and it is affectionately known as the Holiday Will. Every year as we move into July and August we will get dozens of new clients approach us to get a Will written or updated and it will invariably be urgent. They need their new Will in place before they go on holiday.

own mortality. The question of what happens to my wealth if the plane falls out of the sky is the basic premise of all Holiday Wills. The ABTA holiday trends report 2018 states that more people than ever before are expected to take a foreign holiday this year. So, if you are one of them then maybe it’s your turn to make a Holiday Will. Of course, you don’t have to be going on holiday to make your Will. Remember two thirds of UK adults don’t have an up to date valid Will. If it is time to make yours, call us today on 01778 752 861 and we will get it done before you go on your holidays!

Now statistically, air travel is one of the safest things you can do, but it always seems to remind us of our

Money Matters

Understand your investments and the risks you might be taking

You really need to start considering how and where your own money is being invested

How are your pensions and investments really invested? It’s a reasonable question but more often than not one that you never get around to answering. Many of us have Pensions and ISA’s but these are not actually investments they are ‘tax wrappers’. In other words, they determine how you are being taxed on the capital you have invested. So, you really need to start considering how and where your own money is being invested and by whom and how much are they charging you for the privilege. Are they investing your capital into the Stock market, Bonds, Property or a combination of each? Are your holdings cautious, balanced or adventurous and how do you feel about the risks you are taking? What do your advisors recommend in order to help minimise risk and most importantly, do you understand that you are taking risk? All of which are reasonable questions, ones which I asked a client to consider this week as we discussed

what they described as being their ‘small pension holdings’. Through discussion it became clear that there was no plan, no strategy for investing, no consideration of how their money had been invested and the risks that they faced should things go well or perhaps start to go wrong. The client was greatly surprised to find that the ‘small holdings’ we were reviewing actually totalled over £80,000. There really is nothing unusual about this particular situation, most of our clients are often surprised by the extent of their holdings and so we would ask you to take a moment, pause for thought and consider your own planning. If you can really answer all of the above questions then we wish you well (odds are you should still have a chat with us!) but if you can’t then perhaps now is the time to arrange a meeting with us as we are certain we will be able to help! Stargazer, school teacher and acclaimed amateur astronomer

G

eorge Eric Deacon Alcock MBE was the son of a self-educated railway worker. He was born in Peterborough on 28 August 1912. A bright child fascinated by insects, plants, trains and the weather. He witnessed the large partial solar eclipse on 8 April 1921 and from then on added astronomy to his many passions by observing the heavens with a small brass reflector belonging to his father.

Whilst training to be a teacher in 1931, George joined the Meteor Section of the British Astronomical Association (BAA). He became one of its small team of official meteor observers with the aim of predicting optimum times for twostation observation of meteors. In 1933 George obtained permission from the Meteorological Office to set up his own weather station.

Words by June & Vernon Bull – Local Historians and Authors Finding only occasional and temporary local teaching posts he was permanently broke and dependent on a borrowed telescope for his observations. During this time George’s drawings of comets and the planets impressed several eminent BAA members. In 1937 he secured a full-time teaching post and meteor watching then had to be fitted into a strict routine

He was completely absorbed in the scientific study of the universe, especially of the motions, positions, sizes, composition, and behaviour of objects in the sky.

to bed until 8pm, observe from 8.15pm till 1am, or 3am if there was a lot of activity.” From 1939 to 1945, George experienced some alarming wartime escapades, including three court martials with the RAF in North Africa and Italy for observing the sky at night – when he should have been on night duty. After WWII he returned to teaching in Peterborough; first at Southfields Junior School and then Fletton Secondary School; and of course, he continued with his utter fascination of astronomy. He was completely absorbed in the scientific study of the universe, especially of the motions, positions, sizes, composition, and behaviour of objects in the sky. He once confessed to us that the best part was studying the data and interpreting it as far as the science of the stars, planets and other objects are concerned. He didn’t have any fancy equipment to study the sky – so sketching or

of daily life. He recalled in later years that: “If it promised to be clear, I’d leave school at 4.30pm, go home for tea and then go

painting his observations enabled him to recall events more than any photograph could or would be able to do. In 1953 George embarked on a five-year search for a comet. He was not optimistic, as none had been discovered in England since 1894. However, that was all to change, as on 25 August 1959 he discovered his first comet - and five days later became instantly famous by finding another!

Success continued as some nine months later George found his second nova and for a brief period the two novae discovered were simultaneously visible to the naked eye. The last of his discoveries included Nova Herculis in 1991 (the fastest nova ever recorded!) which brought him the record for discoveries of comets and novae. Astronomy, however, was only one of George’s passions. He told us in 1987 that he spent more hours

He was completely absorbed in the scientific study of the universe studying birds, botany and church architecture, than the skies. That said, he had no doubt

43

that his greatest achievement was the years he spent teaching. He received an MBE “for services to astronomy” in 1979 and a minor planet (3174) was named in his honour. George died on 15 December 2000.

Next Issue: Medeshamstede (now known as Peterborough) can claim to have been the first resting place of Christianity in Central England

However, celebrity life was not for George, as he was a shy and modest man who tried hard to avoid media attention. Comets Alcock three and four were discovered in March 1963 and September 1965, respectively. Again, on 8 July 1967, George broke another record as no new novae had been discovered by anyone anywhere since 1964 until he spotted one. The very next day the Royal Observatory confirmed his find: “Nova Delphini, the first nova discovered from England since 1934.” Please mention Scene magazine when responding to advertisements

C

amping is a hobby and holiday that most people like to do on a regular basis, either as a quick weekend away, or longer on one of the many camping sites around the UK. Caravanning and Camping in the UK has been on a steady increase, with more people deciding on a staycation rather than flying to hotter climates. It’s a fun opportunity to enjoy the outdoors with family and friends. You are able to go back to basics, getting the family together and enjoy a game of rounders, cricket or just lazing in the sun whilst the children play. Eat alfresco by cooking on the many great products that are available – you no longer need to heat a can of beans over a gaslight! We have plenty of utensils to make that eating outdoors a great cooking experience. Dads seem to like to barbeque, whilst mum relaxes and watches the children having fun. Changing times I William Cecil, from Bourne to Stamford n the 18th century many things were changing at Bourne, as it was in many other communities across the country. Land use was critical in many ways and Bourne had Fenland that could be used in a different and better way for the community. In an Enclosure Act of 1766 the Bourne Commissioners were directed to set out some 340 acres in Bourne Fen for roads and drove-ways with the remainder to be vested in the Black Sluice Commissioners, in trust for periods not exceeding 21 years - the rents to be applied towards satisfying the tax laid upon the North Bank and the North Fen with the deficiency, if any, to be made up from the tax levied on the Fen. However, the quantity remaining was 218 acres, and the rent from this was not sufficient to pay the Black Sluice Taxes until about 1811! It got better though because in 1816 there was a surplus of over £83 a year! Looking back some 200 years in the history of Bourne we find William Cecil, a Lincolnshire man, born and bred, who always saw that county as his own. But as a politician, he needed to keep close to the centre of power and he spent the majority of his life in and around royalty.

William’s father’s family had settled in the neighbouring town of Stamford in the last quarter of the fifteenth century, having come from South Wales. William’s mother’s family were well-established in the district, with a history of service in the

William was born in Bourne and christened in the Abbey Church of St Peter and St Paul, which still stands in the town today. However, things changed in and around Bourne and not always for the good of the town. We know that William Cecil was born in Bourne, but the family and its influence were based in Stamford.

Brian Jones – Local Historian

In the second half of the 1700’s Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown was changing the grounds of Burghley House and in the town things were also being altered. The Lady Anne’s Hotel in the middle of town was renamed the William Cecil Hotel and, in 1771, three new buildings were built. Number 36 was described as being ‘newly built’ for John Clarke, the clerk/agent for Brownlow the 9th Earl of Exeter. The earliest mention of number 37 is in deeds dated 1763 and number 38’s first occupant was Lady Anne Cecil, the sister of Brownlow Cecil, the 9th Earl of Exeter. Lady Anne died in 1785 and ten years later, on 8th April 1796, the Stamford Mercury carried an advertisement that number 38 consisted of “Two cellars; and on the Ground Floor, Three parlours; a Kitchen, Scullery, Larder, and Butler’s Pantry; on the First Floor, Four Chambers; and two rooms in the Attic Story; a Yard, Garden, and Appurtenances, walled round”.

ilm Festivals are always deemed a stuffy, highbrow affair where people from the film industry judge Independent (Indie) short and feature length films and make a judgement across all aspects of the films. You have probably heard of Cannes Film Festival or Sundance Film Festival or even a few in the UK, like the London Film Festival and wondered what on earth is going on! Well, in September (14th-16th), myself (Richard S of The Film & TV Show Radio Show & Podcast) and the team behind YaxFest, are bringing a much more inclusive, public Film Festival to the village of Holme, with The Admiral Wells Pub (the lowest pub in the British Isles – see where we get LowDown from?!) at its heart. We are planning a Film Festival that mixes the Highbrow, with family entertainment and aspects of Comic Cons. We have panels, workshops and Q&A’s planned with industry professionals, as well as a plethora of films already submitted and going through the judging process. BUT… we are also asking the public to come

and join in; enjoy the film based traders, film based vehicles such as the TARDIS, DeLorean to name just 2, enjoy our Drive-in Cinema and, of course, watch all the fantastic Indie films that have been selected. Category winners will be announced Saturday 15th and the Grande Winner will be announced Sunday 16th. We also have music planned throughout the weekend and on stages, with the songs

We are actively encouraging local Schools and Colleges to get their students involved and submit films to the festival being film based song covers only! We have already secured a Q&A Panel with a very talented, and up & coming, Writer, Director and Musician, a cast member from Game of Thrones and a cast member from Ready Player One, as well as some very excellent

feature length films and their cast and crew and some TV series cast and crew too. We have so much more planned that we will be sharing over the coming months.

We are actively encouraging local Schools and Colleges to get their students involved and submit films to the festival, as we want to be able to give the next generation of filmmakers/ actors/writers etc the chance to showcase their talents to the Film Studios we have attending, looking for the next big thing! If you are into films, why not get your school or college to get in touch with us? We would LOVE to have EVERY local School & College involved! To keep up to date will all things LowDown, join our Facebook Group (LowDownFF), Twitter (LowDownFF) and website www.lowdownfilmfestival.co.uk Richard S hosts The Film & TV Show, every Monday at 7pm on Hereward Community Radio and the hugely successful podcast can be found on iTunes or via all podcast apps.

Helping to bring the community together

A

s and When launched in November, to make finding help and contributing our skills, knowledge and talents, an easier process. I myself have been in both positions, in regards to both needing help but also wanting to give back to society. We don’t live long enough to know how to do everything, but I was unsure of who would or could help

Words by Zoe Phillips, Founder when I needed it. I also wanted to give back, using the skills and knowledge I had gained, mainly my personal development skills that had helped build my confidence. I have always enjoyed helping others and to feel useful adds value to my life. So, I wanted to find out if others felt the same? They do! I have been delighted by the response of people, who have benefitted through our sharing economy by both asking for help and contributing, most of our users have done both. So, to celebrate our successes and to hear more about the

community of collaborators, we held an event. The idea was to bring people together in one place, no mean feat, but an amazing opportunity, to connect and collaborate in the name of improving our city! The evening was a celebration of As and When collaborators and people who make our city great! We had presentations by The YMCA Trinity Group and Lizzie Benton, workplace Wellbeing Mentor. Nicole Lawrence an amazing talent, entertained us while we enjoyed food inspired by Parveen the Spice Queen, Chef de la Maison and Krispy Kreme Doughnuts.

an it really be 37 years since George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley formed one of the most enduring pop groups of the 80s? In four short years WHAM! sold more than 28 million records, topping the charts with three albums, four number one singles and eleven top ten hits. They featured in the Live Aid concert of 1985 and were the first western pop group to ever tour in China. Their impact and influence on the 80s era and music today really cannot be over-emphasised. The Best of WHAM! Show brought to you by Sweeney Entertainments, includes all those hits, a few B side favourites and a couple of early George Michael bonus songs. With sensational vocals, choreography, costumes and an awesome live band, The Best of WHAM!, starring Craig Webb, is an authentic musical journey that truly recaptures the full WHAM! experience. This non-stop 80s party will get audiences singing and dancing to all the greatest hits including ‘Wake Me Up Before You Go Go’, ‘Freedom’ and ‘I’m your Man’. Julie Sweeney, co-founder of Sweeney Entertainments said: “We are thrilled to be presenting this amazing new show – this is a non-stop WHAM! party that is sure to leave audiences singing and dancing the whole way home!” This fun-loving, vibrant, mega-mix tribute to the pop sensation of the 80s will be loved by ‘Young Guns’ of all ages, so book tickets now and join The Best of WHAM! at the ‘Club Tropicana’ (*Sorry.
