Prosecco, people and pythons!
S
eptember has come round again – and, hopefully, both parents and children have survived the long summer break and everyone is looking forward to get back to a modicum of normality and routine. It has been a great summer and, now that we are officially in autumn, the time has come to look towards the harvest festivals, the new seasonal home trends and jobs in the garden. In this issue of the Scene we have some energy saving tips as well as safety advice. We introduce a new regular feature to the magazine from Peters’ Cleaners all about stain removal and advice on keeping your suits, upholstery and delicates in tip top condition. We also have film reviews, history and updates on what’s new, what is coming and what is happening in and around your area. Look out for the JCB Young Driver Zone update on page 67! Next month we are reviewing the Rutland Belle Gin Cruise as well as the Baskervilles’ new menu. There will also be lots going on for Halloween and ideas to entertain the children for half term – so don’t forget to pick up your copy.

n Friday 17 and Saturday 18 November, Peterborough will be hosting one of the UK’s biggest gin festivals within the resplendent surroundings of the city’s Cathedral. Time Out described the Gin Festival (there are events all over the country) as one of the top 10 things to do in 2016, and now local gin lovers have the opportunity to celebrate all things gin on their doorstep. There are more than 100 different gins on offer, including new and exclusive gins that you won’t have seen before, plus masterclasses, a gin cocktail bar, tasty food plus the opportunity to meet and talk to the gin distillers themselves. Tickets are £16 each and grant you approximately five hours of gin-guzzling time. Book early to avoid disappointment.

LA BUCATARIE I’m not all that familiar with Romanian cuisine, but I am excited about the latest addition to Peterborough’s restaurant scene, La Bucatarie – a Romanian and Continental restaurant. La Bucatarie is located next to and managed by The Turkish Kitchen, which has been drawing in crowds from Peterborough’s Romanian community (a lot of Romanian dishes are ‘borrowed’ from
Turkey and other neighbouring countries). Romanian cuisine traditionally includes lots of pork, polenta, soup and salads, and you will certainly find these on the menu at La Bucatarie, as well as a chicken dishes, vegetable sides and meat-heavy sharing platters, including the pork platter, which consists of grilled pork, collar pork fillet, grilled pork loin, grilled minced pork, rustic potatoes and pickles (£30). Traditional stuffed cabbage leaves with minced pork and rice are on the menu, as well as sour soups, but the dish I’d most like to try is the fried lamb with polenta, cheese and pickles – an unusual combination but one that sings to my heart.

here’s something about the Vino Van’s glorious powder pink hue and queues of eagerly awaiting patronage that make it stand out from the growing number of converted Prosecco vans. Vino Van’s owner, Corby lass Siobhan Holmes, had a disused horse trailer remodelled with one aim in mind – to bring chilled glasses of the good stuff to your special event. The van is self-contained, with its own power supply, meaning
that no location is off limits – great news for anyone looking to hold a wedding reception in a remote field. The van – like the Prosecco – can be pimped up to suit your events theme; clients can add flowers and bunting to the van, and guests are positively encouraged to pimp their Prosecco with harmonising syrups and soft fruits sat in a crate atop the bar.
GET YOUR M OTO R R U N N I N G The Iron Horse Ranch House has been bringing a taste of the American roadside cafe to crowds of bikers, hot rod enthusiasts and families alike since 2008, pleasing guests with classic diner dishes. The grills are fired up at 10am, serving a number of gargantuan breakfasts, including plenty of hash browns and pancakes. Hot sandwiches, burgers, hot rods, steaks and grills are served from lunch with a number of tasty bites and sides, including southern fried chicken, griddled corn and bbq beans. It also hosts a Craft Beer Club, held every first Wednesday of the month from 7-10 pm. These evenings are popular with local beer lovers, who enjoy the lively atmosphere as well the informative talk and sampling. Tickets are £20 and cover the cost of some Iron Horse nibbles and a mixed six-pack of beer, which can be drunk on the evening or taken away.
The Vino Van also sells Pops Prosecco Popsicles – perfect for keeping wedding/corporate event guests cool.

Sampling of ales and ciders is encouraged and all half pints are £1.60 and full pints £3.20. Live acoustic music events are held regularly as are silent quiz nights!

F
ans of home-cooked comfort food and beer from around the world are about to be very happy as award-winning pub chain, Pizza, Pots and Pints opens the Queen’s Head on Queen’s Street on 17 August. The concept is based around the idea of the perfect place to enjoy a pint with friends and the food that would be an ideal accompaniment. Everything about Pizza, Pots and Pints, from its
light crispy artisan pizza cooked in a bespoke wood-fired oven, to warming one-pots of comfort food such as bubbling mac and cheese, to international delicious beers, is an obsession for those who run the business. This is the third Pizza, Pots and Pints to open in the region but the first city centre site for the chain, as Director Craig Mayes explains: “We’re really excited to share our passion of delicious Pizza, Pots and Pints with the
people of Peterborough. “The community around the pub also means a great deal to us and we host offers and events to suit all tastes, such as 2-4-1 Mondays, live music Fridays and Sunday roasts.”

Packed lunches with a nutritious punch.

S
hiny shoes at the door and bright white shirts can only mean one thing – back to school time! While I am excited to boot the kids out the door I am less enthused about making packed lunches again. Packed lunches are however a time to experiment and broaden children’s food likes as often they are so hungry at school they devour the whole contents without moaning. Equally, I realise there are also many parents left at the end of the day removing squished fruit and half eaten slimy sandwiches from their child’s lunch box. So, how can we provide a lunch box to support learning and play that will be enjoyed by our
18 18-19 Packed Lunch.indd 18
children and not the bin? Read on… ■ Include a high fibre starchy carbohydrate to fuel brain power, play time and avoid the “I’m starving” at home time. Examples include wholemeal bread, wholegrain pasta and oat cakes. A dry wholegrain cereal with raisins can be included as a healthy, high fibre snack. ■ If sandwiches are met with turned up noses try jazzing up the fillings with grated cheese, apple and mayonnaise; smoked mackerel mixed with cream cheese; chorizo and red pepper or
simply hummous and cucumber. Bored with bread? Then try oatcakes, wraps, breadsticks, pasta, quiche or pizza for variety. ■ Involve your child in decisionmaking and preparation too. Simply asking what your child wants can go a long way to minimising food refusal, waste and most importantly the moaning. Keep it simple and offer two choices like bread or roll, apple or satsuma or which pots they want to use. ■ Make food fun and appetising. Cut sandwiches into shapes, offer food on skewers like fruit kebabs

or simply add colour with fruit and vegetables. A Bento style box can look appealing and means your child can just get on with eating, not spending time opening wrappers. ■ Aim to provide at least two portions of fruit and vegetables like chopped vegetables such as sliced carrot, pepper, cucumber or cherry tomatoes with sandwiches and little pots of mixed fresh and dried fruit – melon and dried mango. Aim for the rainbow to provide colour and a variety of nutrients. ■ Protein is the building block of bone and muscle so needs to be offered at every meal. Ideas include chicken satays sticks, tinned tuna, boiled egg, salmon skewers or beans and tofu for a T: 01778 382762 | September 2017

vegetarian alternative. ■ To support strong and healthy bones and teeth aim to include a calcium source such as yogurt (frozen), pots of rice pudding or custard or cubed cheese/ cheese strings/Babybel. Dairy free alternatives include soya, dried apricots and white bread. ■ Drink. Keep it simple with water! ■ A little something nice. Requests for Mr Kiplings or
chocolate bars will flood the conversation and while it is okay to occasionally indulge them, try to offer healthier snacks such as scone, tea cake, brioche, homemade flapjack or homemade cake. Fruity pancakes are a great hit in our house at breakfast that double up for pack ups too. For a savoury tooth try pretzels, cheese straws/scone, popcorn or small handful of crisps.

fter months of looking for premises in which to open an upmarket, licensed tea room providing table service for customers who would like a more relaxed and easy cafe experience, Eve Werner stumbled upon the perfect venue at 31 Bridge Street, Peterborough. A lovely, light, bright and airy space that lends itself perfectly to Eve’s plans of a daytime tea room and a night time bar. Eve explains: “During the daytime, the environment will be ideal for all of our customers (from mums with children, to office workers, students and OAPs). We will serve reasonably priced, locally sourced and freshly
prepared meals, and my wonderful and experienced pastry chef will be making all of our scones and cakes inhouse. A house speciality will be our Prosecco and Champagne afternoon teas. “In addition, Thursday through to Saturday The Lightbox will stay open late into the evening, attracting a more grown-up crowd looking for a relaxed social environment in which to enjoy quality wines, spirits and cocktails. We are hoping to prove a valuable addition to the growing Bridge Street buzz for pre and after dinner drinks.” The Lightbox will open mid-October, so look out for the latest updates on The Lightbox Cafe

Check out Walter’s Bar and Eatery, named after an iconic Cambridgeshire strongman.
F
rom 1 September Walter’s Bar and Eatery, on the first floor of The Broadway in Peterborough, will be open every day from early morning until the twilight hours. Live music including harpists and classical guitarists will play between noon and 3pm providing the perfect atmosphere for something different for all those at work or at play. The venue is named in recognition of local legend Walter Cornelius, who died in 1983. Born in Latvia, he came to England as a teenager in the 1940s, escaping his home by rowing 400 miles across
Birdman the Baltic, with a Russian bullet wound in his stomach. To some he was the swimming pool attendant who taught them to love water. Others recognised him as being fearless, for instance walking on his hands for 153 miles, or pushing a double decker bus for half a mile with his head, and breaking more than 50 world records. Walter Mark Ringer, Managing Director of The won the World Broadway, said: “Aside from the main Sausage Eating auditorium and our Broadway Suite Championship in conference centre, we also have Walter’s 1966, devouring Bar and Eatery, featuring the Cornelius 23 bangers in 10 Banger – a signature snack.” minutes. EAT TO Five food staples for a better night’s sleep.
T
hese five foods can have a positive effect on our sleeping patterns and help us drift off into an uninterrupted and peaceful night’s sleep.
1
OATS As well as being a good way to start the day, oats can be a great way to end the day. Surprisingly, your body requires energy to sleep as well as to be active. The slow-releasing carbohydrates in oats dripfeed your cells with energy throughout the night, and can stop your blood sugar from falling too low and waking you up. The carbohydrates can also help the amino acid tryptophan to cross into your brain to make melatonin, the hormone that regulates your sleep-wake cycle. Try a half-bowl of Nairn’s GlutenFree Scottish Porridge Oats for supper (RRP £2, Sainsbury’s).
2
KUKICHA TWIG TEA To encourage better sleep, minimise your caffeine intake after midday. If you love your green tea, try switching to Kukicha twig tea in the afternoon; it’s made from twigs and stems of the tea bush rather than the leaves and is much lower in caffeine. Try Clearspring’s Organic Japanese Kukicha (RRP £3.59, clearspring.co.uk). T: 01778 382762 | September 2017
23 Food For Sleep.indd 23
3
PUMPKIN SEEDS Pumpkin seeds are rich in magnesium, a mineral that helps to calm and relax the muscles and encourage restful sleep. For a tasty evening snack, try Clearspring Organic Tamari-Roasted Pumpkin Seeds (RRP £1.69, clearspring.co.uk). Supplementing magnesium could also help – try KalmAssure Magnesium Powder by Natures Plus (£24.50, naturesplus.co.uk). Take it with your evening meal to help your body wind down.
4
SWEET POTATOES For a similar reason to oats, eating some sweet potato with your evening meal can help keep up that drip-feed of energy over the night and help with melatonin production. Sweet potato can be a better option than white potato, as it tends to release energy more slowly, while still being a good source of carbohydrates. And stick to a moderate portion such as one medium potato, especially if you’re watching your weight.
5
CHERRY JUICE Cherries contain small amounts of melatonin, the hormone that helps regulate your sleepwake cycle. So if you struggle with insomnia, a glass of cherry juice or a serving of fresh or dried cherries before bedtime can naturally help you drift off. Also, remember to finish your evening meal at least two hours before you go to bed, to give your body enough time to properly digest and relax before you settle into a long night’s sleep.

RELATE CAMBRIDGE Seeking help should be the next step – not the last resort.
C
ommunication difficulties, a history of failed relationships, an affair, difficult life events, parenting problems, resolving conflict or dealing with a crisis, can all place quite a strain on relationships. Many of us experience relationship or family problems at some point and may need help, but we don’t always know where to go. Not only that, but there is a huge amount of fear and trepidation about asking for help in the midst of a relationship crisis. So often we will simply battle on – in many cases for years – and so can be left feeling weighed down and emotionally exhausted. The pain and stress that relationship difficulties cause can be minimised significantly with the right sort of help and support. Skills and strategies can be learnt which, together with understanding and encouragement from a trained relationship counsellor, can make a huge amount of difference
to anyone who is struggling with their relationships. To meet growing demand Relate Cambridge has expanded its service by realigning its boundaries to incorporate Peterborough, as well as 80,000 people living in the Fenland area. As part of this recent expansion, a new outpost has also been opened in Stamford. Other local venues include Peterborough Central Library and Awdry House in Wisbech.
For more information or to book an appointment, contact Relate Cambridge T 01223 357424 Mon-Thur 8am-10pm, Fri 8 am-6pm, Sat 9am-5pm (confidential answerphone at all other times) W relatecambridge.org.uk

rown Jewellers recently opened its second store in Peterborough city centre, next to Turtle Bay overlooking St John Church on Cathedral Square. To celebrate, Matt Powell held a Grand Opening, with the Mayor of Peterborough who cut the ribbon and unveil the new store. Fei Liu, the 2016 Designer of the Year award winner, was in attendance to give out the prize to the competition winner of his shooting star pendant piece. Hundreds of people came throughout the day long event and were treated to bubbles, canapĂŠs and free gift bags. There was a Fei Liu Fine jewellery giveaway and many other fantastic on-the-day offers and competitions. Matt and his mum Cathy (pictured) along with the team demonstrated their many different services and discussed their famous brands such as Bulova, Michel Herbelin and the exclusive ChloBo range. Award-winning goldsmith Matt was working outside and talking to the customers, and many were excited to get to talk to the man behind the magic that Crown Jewellers creates! As well as stocking fine jewellery and Matt making stunning bespoke pieces of artwork (including the Dragonfly that has won national awards), it also offer repairs and valuations.

DIY SOS
s e o r e h
Safe Local Trades comes to the aid of disabled victim.
F
ollowing months of stress, financial worry, poor health and anxiety brought on by the actions of a rogue trader, a disabled Peterborough man says he can now enjoy his home again. Brian Gilbert of Orton Waterville, Peterborough, parted with a £1,000 cash deposit to a trader whom he instructed to resurface his 71 square metre driveway in February this year. After taking the money – which equated to half of the fee quoted for the project – the trader completed half a day’s work at Mr Gilbert’s property and then failed to return to finish the job. Mr Gilbert, who uses a mobility scooter to get around, has been unable to contact the trader and/or retrieve any of the money paid. The unfinished driveway has left access to his garage unsafe and resulted in months of stress and worry. Now, five months after the work began, Mr Gilbert says he can begin to enjoy his home once more – following a DIY SOS-style community call by Safe Local Trades, the city-based, community safety service that protects consumers from cowboy and rogue traders. Safe Local Trades owner Eileen Le Voi received a call from Mr Gilbert, unsure of what to do after the trader disappeared with his money and did not complete the driveway work. “Determined to do what we could to help
Eileen Le Voi and Kerry Cooper from Safe Local Trades with Brian Gilbert and Councillor Des Watt Mr Gilbert, we issued an appeal to the local trades community for any support they could give. We were delighted with the offer of help from a local tarmac and asphalt surfacing company to take over the work, and an offer of materials from another business,” said Eileen. Des Watt of Des Watt Roadways from Yaxley stepped in to restore and repair the driveway, with materials supplied free of charge by Alex Smiles MQP of Baston. Mr Gilbert said: “The past few months have been a nightmare. We can’t thank Eileen, and her colleague Kerry, enough for their advice and help which has led to the issue being resolved, and at no additional cost to the original quote.” Eileen added: “My huge thanks to Des, Alex and their teams for their support. Mr Gilbert is certainly not alone when it comes to being duped by rogues – many of whom appear to be completely genuine and not all of which are cold callers.”

great paired with dark furniture. It seems that this year brass will be also the trendiest material for bathrooms while also on the rise are metals painted black creating a strong graphic sign.
METALLICS
Real metals and metallic finishes are proving popular this year. We’ve seen an increase of metallic wall coverings, tiles, accessories and furniture to the market and it’s set to stay. Metals with warm tones and an aged-look like brass are back and trendy with a nod to the vintage retro look. It looks

TEAL
Teal’s popularity has increased 10-fold throughout the year and shows no sign of stopping it. With so many variation of depth to the colour it’s easy to see why the teal trend is booming, and why stop at fabrics and wallpapers? Try implementing teal in your
bathroom or kitchen for interiors with a bold and yet classic timeless twist. The right amount of colour has the power to set the whole tune of a space, adding gold and brass-coloured accessories to a bathroom will heighten the dimension, depth, and luxury. Unlike the traditional shiny ceramic, gold or brass look finished with matte, satin or spun gold will give the space an exotic vibe especially when accessorised with elements of the natural greens of plants.

Iconic chairs CHAIRS
DARK SIDE
MIXING STYLES
Iconic chairs are huge at the moment and widely becoming more common than the traditional three-seat and two-seat sofa combination. Using chairs alongside a sofa creates a sense of space and interest and with so many designs to choose from it’s not hard to see why. Statement chairs are a firm favourite at Hunters Interiors and the fabric houses has not disappointed this year spoiling us to collections full of colour, pattern and textures.
Dark woods, vinyls and brushed finishes, are key trends in flooring for the coming season. Floors are making a statement with dark browns and grey being at the forefront. Dark wood helps to create a classic and glamorous look that can then be paired with nearly any colour for a harmonious blend. Deep walnut parquet floor is enjoying a revival giving a more vintage feel – it’s quite an adventurous statement but one that’s sure to pay off.
Nothing seems more far from Scandinavian minimalism than Bohemian eclectic design, right? Well, you’re wrong. The two actually mix harmoniously together forming a new trend Scandi Boho. These two styles have much common – natural green, wooden furniture, eclectic rugs creating a combination of both Scandinavian cleanness and brightness plus the creative and artful touch of the Bohemian interiors.

diseases next year. Don’t forget to remove the shading from your greenhouse towards the end of the month so that your plants receive the maximum amount of light. Water early on in the day so the
greenhouse is dry by the evening. Damp, cool nights can encourage botrytis. Close vents and doors late in the afternoon to help trap in heat overnight. This will ensure your plants crop for as long as possible.
In the greenhouse Empty pots – old compost and decaying plant material can harbour unwanted pests in your greenhouse and provide ideal shelter for them over winter. Clean out your greenhouse to reduce the risk of pests and

In the vegetable garden Keep harvesting crops. If you have a glut of fruit and veg try freezing, drying, pickling, and storing so that you can benefit from them later on. It’s important to pinch out your cordon tomato plants now if you haven’t already done so. This will concentrate the plant’s energy into producing ripe fruits. Pull or cut off the foliage of maincrop potatoes at ground level three weeks before lifting them to prevent blight spores infecting the tubers as you lift
them. This will also help to firm the skins of the potatoes. Spread newly dug potatoes out to dry for a few hours before storing them in in a cool dark place. Store them in paper or hessian sacks as this will allow the crop to breathe while it is in storage. Only store undamaged, disease free tubers – one rotten potato can ruin your whole crop. Help your pumpkins ripen in time for Halloween by removing any leaves shadowing the fruits.
Looking after your lawn Create a new lawn from turf or seed – autumn weather is favourable for good lawn establishment. Raise the height of your mower blades as grass growth slows down. Now is a good time to carry out essential lawn maintenance to avoid waterlogging and compaction. Try aerating your lawn with a garden fork, removing thatch from the surface with a rake and repairing dead patches. Use a specialist lawn scarifier if you have a large area to cover. You can feed your lawn with an autumn fertiliser now, which is rich in potassium and low in nitrogen.

Place pumpkins and squashes on a piece of slate or wood to raise them off the wet soil and prevent rotting. Pot up some mint and parsley for the kitchen windowsill, to use through the winter. The end of this month is the perfect time to start planting garlic bulbs for cropping next year.
From your armchair Make rough sketches of your flower borders and vegetable plot to help plan for next year. Reflect on what worked and what didn’t! Think about which bulbs you would like for next spring – now is the time to order ready for autumn planting.

BE SAFE The importance of electrical testing in domestic and commercial properties.
T
he electrical system in your home is overlooked and abused, but without it nothing works! Most people would rather buy a new TV or the latest Xbox rather than spend between £180-350 depending on the size of the property to test their homes once every 10 years. The regulations state that for owneroccupied domestic premises the electrical systems must be tested and inspected at a maximum of 10 years, there are different rules for rented property maximum five years, and commercial is different again. Electrical systems need maintenance. The last insurance statistics report 72,000 electrical fires in England and Wales 69,000 were caused by bad electrical systems, faulty appliances or shoddy DIY. Did you know that more than 70% of households
in the UK need to be rewired right now? And the majority are not insured! A simple get-out clause used by insurance companies says something like this in your insurance documents. You are deemed to maintain your building (read home/office/factory) to the current BS and building standards, this includes testing and inspection. If you don’t have a current EICR, technically you’re not insured. Call Safe Electric today for a free quote on the testing of your premises.

KEEP IT
Peters’ Cleaners knows everything there is is know about cleaning!
September’s stain – blackberries
D
ropped your blackberry and apple crumble on your tablecloth? Spilt blackberry juice on your favourite shirt? Here are some top tips for removing the stains: ■ Use an Oxy powder. Dilute some in water and soak prior to washing. Be careful about washing if the stain has not ‘moved’ as washing it could make it ‘set in’. ■ For items unsuitable for a washing machine like upholstery, spray the blackberry stain with white vinegar then lightly dab with a cloth. Keep repeating until the stain has gone. Before using vinegar, be sure to test for colour loss on an area of the fabric that is not visible. Peters’ Cleaners does not generally recommend using bleach as it can turn some cotton pink or yellow. Before treating any stain on your cloths or fabrics check the care label. Bleaches and other chemicals can shrink, distort and discolour some fabrics as can water. If in any doubt, seek professional advice.
Keep moths at bay Take advantage of the fresh September breeze and sun to air all your natural fabrics, especially woollen sweaters, wool-based suits, silks and cashmere – the favourites of moths. Moths love dark (and dirty) clothes so regularly giving them an airing and ensuring they are clean gives you a better chance of avoiding moth holes this winter.
48 48 Peters Cleaner.indd 48
Ask Peters’ Cleaners Q Is dry cleaning dry? A The simple answer is no. The dry cleaning process soaks clothing and fabrics in solvent, the most widely used of which is tetrachloroethylene (commonly known as perchloroethylene or perc).
Q So why is it called dry cleaning? A Simply because when cleaning clothing and textiles no water is used.
Q How do you know if the item is best suited to dry cleaning or washing? A Here are some simple guidelines: P or any ■ Look at the care label. If it has this symbol O other circle symbol with or without a letter, then it is suited to dry cleaning. ■ Natural fibres such as wool and silk are best suited to dry cleaning as they can shrink, distort and even lose colour when cleaned using water. ■ Dry cleaning is less severe on delicate fabrics. ■ Oil or grease stains do not dissolve in water but do during dry cleaning.

lmost 79% of those with workplace pensions would welcome increasing their savings alongside employer contributions, research by Ipsos Mori has found. This finding follows calls to raise the minimum automaticenrolment contribution levels. Scottish Widows called for a 12% minimum contribution by 2020, while Aviva said it wanted a 12.5% by 2028, arguing raising the minimum contribution levels would be a positive step towards helping more people save for retirement. The poll also found the vast

majority (83%) of employees now see saving through a workplace pension as a routine undertaking, and fourfifths (80%) are positive about the benefits of being auto-enrolled. There are now 8.3 million people automatically enrolled into a workplace pension across 700,000 employers, with opt-out rates of less than 10%, according to The Pensions Regulator. Secretary of state for work and pensions David Gauke said: “I want Britain to be the best country in the world in which to grow old and for people to feel
prepared and confident about their retirement. For this to happen we must help young workers plan ahead, while managing the competing demands of day-to-day life. “Automatic enrolment has been a huge success, helping millions more people save into a workplace pension.” So how are you financing your retirement? Are you saving enough to finance your own plans and ambitions for the future?

his month I had the pleasure of driving the Mini Countryman from Sycamore Mini in Peterborough. To say big things come in small packages is an understatement for this little beast! It’s the biggest Mini yet, 20cm bigger in fact. I put it through its paces in the city and countryside, and it was a pleasure to drive in both situations. I felt at home with the whole cockpit experience; this car has
the luxury of a BMW and you certainly know that it has been born from that stable of excellence. The onboard computer is easy to follow and understand. It also includes some fun with changeable lights around the console screen. Do not be fooled by this Mini, the space inside is incredible, the rear seats move forward or back 13cm to either give you more legroom as a rear passenger, or a larger boot for those camping trips or golf clubs. The Countryman is available in a four-wheel or two-wheel drive, and as a hybrid.

TURF WARS Local historian Brian Jones uncovers Civil War happenings in communities outside of Bourn and Stamford.
E
arly in 1642 all men aged 18 and over were required by Parliament to take an oath swearing allegiance to the Protestant faith. The returns for the Deepings are held in the House of Lords Record Office and show that in Market Deeping, 213 men “all willingly” took the oath before the Rector Revd Paul Prestland and other local officials. He also signed the Return naming 312 men at Deeping St James, as the local vicar, Christopher Smith, was absent in London. West Deeping’s Return signed by Hugh Maplisden, vicar, two churchwardens and constables named 57 men, stating “There are not any that have refused”. The Deepings would have had something happening to them even if it was just soldiers of one army or the other passing through their communities. Rector Prestland was Royalist and fled to escape arrest. His family were evicted from the rectory and sought safety in the church, living for some time in the ringing chamber and relying on the charity of others. The Revd Prestland regained his Deeping living 17 years later following the restoration of the monarchy. After Oliver Cromwell’s death

Richard Cromwell
King Charles II in September 1658 it was decided that the Protector had nominated his son Richard as his successor and unanimously declared “the Lord Richard Cromwell” as the new head of state. Richard didn’t like or want the job, and when King Charles’ son Charles returned the following year, Richard went into exile abroad. In 1660 Parliament offered to restore the monarchy if Charles agreed to concessions for religious toleration and a general amnesty. He was not as hard headed as his father, and agreed to the proposals and returned to London on a wave of popular support to be crowned King Charles II on Saturday 29 May. As with churches across the country, many buildings in our

area had been badly ruined. At Market Deeping the wood panelling at the east end of the church had been destroyed while the rest took some eight years after the Restoration to restore it. A significant date for someone in Market Deeping during the Civil War period was Saturday 4 July 1648, as it was skilfully carved on to a wooden beam in their house (now not visible). Possibly it was the date of a marriage, or when the house was constructed. Unfortunately, Market Deeping’s early Parish Register was destroyed and the Bishop’s copy of baptisms, marriages and deaths for 1640 is also missing. Last month we were talking about the troubles at Burghley House. Now the King is back; our churches are returning to their Protestant believers and we can get back to our world as it was, but at Burghley a serious situation arose. In 1678 the 4th Earl died and his son, John, became the 5th Earl of Exeter. As we shall see next month, John’s beliefs did not quite fit into the plans of King Charles II. R E V E R T TO An account of the Commercial School, Cathedral Gateway by local historians and authors June and Vernon Bull.
T
he Commercial School was a private secretarial school located initially at 21 New Road and then it moved to the Cathedral Gateway (near St Nicholas’ Gate). The business was established in 1910 by Mrs Honor Elizabeth Bean, and when her son, Mr Felix Eustace Bean, gave up his job as a builder’s clerk to join his mother’s enterprise – the Commercial School really started to take off. At its height, the school had 60 day-pupils and 150 plus evening students. Pupils received practical training in shorthand (Pitman), typewriting, bookkeeping, arithmetic and English. Felix became proficient in shorthand and went on to achieve a BA in
60 60-61 History.indd 60
Commerce. Visiting teachers attended the school for instruction in French, Spanish, German, Italian and Hungarian. The Commercial School and Typewriting Office held professional and business connections across the city and students were placed in suitable and appropriately remunerative positions when proficient. Felix also owned a shop at 9 Fitzwilliam Street that sold all makes of typewriters, stationery, printing books, business supplies, fountain pens and leather goods. To many who attended the Commercial School Mrs Bean is remembered with affection as she was well spoken and always immaculately dressed.
Bean’s Commercial School c1939
Local businesses benefited from Bean’s Commercial School
It was said that on her 100th birthday she still had a fantastic memory and as a centenarian had managed to retain a laser sharp wit. Her son Felix died at his home 251 Park Road. Bean’s Commercial School ceased business in Cathedral 1966, but it is remembered Gateway c1909 today by those local girls and women who trained there as having given them the best possible start to their working lives. The school also trained junior reporters in shorthand and typing. The latter was essential for them to gain their proficiency certificate in journalism. Yesterday’s commercial schools were akin to today’s apprenticeship schemes September 2017 | E: info@scenepublishing.co.uk

where students are trained in a specific vocation and gain a qualification while in work or seeking permanent work. The history of apprenticeships in England goes back to the Middle Ages. One of the original documents to set out the terms of training was the Elizabethan Statute of Artificers in 1563. The so-called master-apprentices’ relationship was established and grew over the centuries. By the late 1800s apprenticeships had changed from the then more traditional trades such as building, papermaking and printing to

include the emerging sectors such as engineering and shipbuilding. Today, apprenticeships continue to reflect the emerging sectors in the economy such as IT, environmental sciences, genomics, entrepreneurialships et al. Clearly local businesses benefited from those who had achieved proficiency certificates from Bean’s Commercial School in the field of typewriting, shorthand, bookkeeping, languages etc. It is interesting to note that the Commercial School also specialised in individual tuition – so that every effort was placed on achievement. If you have any memories of Mrs Honor Bean and her son Felix, or images of the school, then we would be delighted to hear from you.

Two unmissable films showing now.
Dunkirk
Cars 3 Disney and Pixar are back with their newest blockbuster film, Cars 3 – a franchise that has excited and encouraged children over the last 11 years. Following on from the last film, we find Lightning McQueen (voiced by Owen Wilson) beginning to realise the speed in which technology in his fellow racers has evolved. He finds himself in a race that looks like another easy win until rookie Jackson Storm (voiced by Armie Hammer), in a state-of-the-art smart car, zooms past him effortlessly. In an attempt to try and match up, Lightning pushes himself too hard and is involved in a terrible accident, not too dissimilar to the incident of his former mentor, Doc Hudson. From here the film then takes us on a journey of maturity and acceptance; with some excellent action scenes, which is actually quite refreshing. If you liked the first two, you will find this easy watching, if a little predictable for adults, but with a much more mature feeling around the dialog and delivery. A fantastic film for children to watch again and again. 5/5
Christopher Nolan brings one of the most iconic historical war events in living memory to the big screen in this epic film. Starring Tom Hardy (needs no explanation), Cillian Murphy (Batman Begins), Mark Rylance (The BFG) and Sir Kenneth Branagh (Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets), Dunkirk was touted by many as a potential Oscar winner, but unfortunately leaves plenty to be desired in this critic’s mind. What promises much in the trailer, for me, fails to deliver. That is not to say it is not a good film and worth going to see. It really is. The film is grandiose in scale and action, but lacking in dialog. It is set across three pivotal parts of the fight; on land over the course of a week; on sea set over a day; and by air set over an hour, which is the smartest thing about the film and is what sets it apart from other films. The delivery of each part is very good, and the scenes are a joy to behold in the scale and impact each one has on the viewer. I was not won over by the film overall. However, I would recommend you see it once and decide for yourself. 3/5
You can hear more about the latest films and TV shows by listening in to Richard S weekly radio show on Peterborough’s Hereward Community Radio. This can only be found online via the TuneIn app or website as well as Facebook, iTunes and podcast.

I
f successful, a £1 million investment will see the installation of the biggest ever JCB Young Driver Zone, an attraction which includes a large track for pedal diggers, huge JCB slide, scaffold themed climbing frame and other unique interactive play equipment. The JCB zone recreates a miniature village and construction site and will contain everything from the health and safety briefing classroom for budding operators through to a large track and building site where children can experience both fun and educational play. There will also be a new High Top Hobbit Village wooden climbing and play facility created. Further changes will see a new sheltered infant sand play and seating area. Springfields would also be host to what is believed to be Lincolnshire’s only gold panning activity area.
The proposed new leisure offer will be situated within the Festival Gardens at Springfields and will be accessed via the existing Craft Cafe. The Craft Cafe building itself will be refurbished to house a new American-themed diner. The popular Jurassic themed Dinosaur miniature golf course will also be fully refurbished. SLR Outlets, that operate the Springfields Outlet Shopping Centre has submitted a planning application which, if successful, would deliver a major improvement to the leisure offer at the Spalding-based attraction and create up to 40 new jobs. The planning application will be determined by South Holland District Council.

TIGALIVE Dee Kennedy checks out TigAlive – the Visitor Attraction of the Year
I
was lucky to be invited to a great day at Lincolnshire Wildlife Park, in Friskney, near Skegness on its launch of TigAlive, a campaign to help the conservation of the tiger. In July its doors opened to more than 1,500 visitors who went to see parrots, pumas, panthers and other amazing creatures such at the adorable meerkats and Cecil the tapir. The Bengal Gardens, that opened earlier this year, is home to the 11 tigers currently residing at the park. On the day, TV presenter Michaela Strachan from Springwatch and the Really Wild Show introduced TigAlive with Tony Ross, to raise awareness and funds for the conservation of the Bengal tiger. Part of the activities involved two static cycles, that were ridden by the park owner, Steve Nichols and his team, who took turns to cycle the target distance of 4,500 miles, which is

See the tigers close-up, and even feed them! the distance to the wildlife park to Bengal in India. The wildlife park is open from 10am to 5.30pm daily and has a huge array of cute, funny and entertaining birds, mammals and reptiles. It also has the UK’s largest number of parrots (more than 100 species). There is a children’s play area and lots of places to picnic as it is set in over 11 acres of land, or you can eat at the Rainforest Café. If you are feeling adventurous you can also arrange a Tiger Experience,
One of 11 tigers where you get to see the tigers close-up, and even feed them. Contact the park for details. I enjoyed my special day at the Park, and it is obvious why it was awarded Visitor Attraction of the Year 2017. I would certainly recommend a visit to the park, and try the Tiger Experience – it’s one you will never forget.
