elcome to the May issue of the Scene which is about celebrating the outside with lots of alfresco products available locally. We continue our series of articles on how to achieve great health through fitness and eating the right foods as well as following the journey of a Scene reader through her hypnotherapy session with this month as the conclusion. We dedicate our main section to a topic that either does or will affect us all – Care for older relatives. We are asked by many readers for more advice on this topic, so we reached out to all of our local experts to help guide you on what to do if you are faced with difficult decisions and to outline some of the options available to you, from home care to nursing homes, as well the financial implications and how to avoid paying too much. Our resident feature writers June and Vernon Bull continue with enlightening us on local history and fascinating photos from years gone by and Brian Jones talks this month about Burghley House. If you are looking for local events and places to go, then look at our events diary and if you fancy escaping then our travel pages for home and abroad will give you lots to think about. As always, I really hope you enjoy reading this issue of the Scene and if you have any comments or would like to include information please email me at heidi@ scenepublishing.co.uk

? h s i k c e P g n i l e e F The good people of Peterborough can’t eat enough pizza, or so it would seem with the opening of a second pizzeria on the city’s historical Cowgate. Mania Pizza have taken over the premises which once housed Top Gigio’s, and offer pizzas cooked in a traditional pizza oven, as well as a selection of starters and sides inspired by owner Zuzanna’s

Polish roots, like croquettes filled with mincemeat and sauerkraut, soft cheese and potato filled dumplings, and borscht, a vivid beetroot soup. There are some exciting and unexpected topping combos for the pizza, such as the ‘salmon deluxe’ with salmon, brie, broccoli and mango, and the ‘highlander’ with smoked sheep’s cheese, cranberries and parma ham - which we are very keen to try!

Great dining experiences for you to enjoy!

Talented local chef, Dameon Clark of The Wicked Witch, has been running a series of internationally-themed tasting evenings, which to date have included South American, Spanish Tapas, American and Australian themes, all met with great enthusiasm from regulars and those new to The Wicked Witch dining experience. The taster evenings are held once a month and offer the opportunity to try plates such beef ragout sliders, popcorn shrimp and the exquisite poached fig and pears with rioja sorbet and caramel custard delicious!

Finding great tasting healthy food on the go can be a challenge, but Peterborough’s health-conscious diners are now being catered for by The Good Stuff, a healthy-eating fast food restaurant who have moved into 16 Cowgate. The Good Stuff offer a fantastic selection of healthy breakfasts, wraps, sandwiches and juices alongside filling meal boxes, kebabs, protein pots and pizzas. The ‘nutty chicken’ pizza is topped with peanut sauce, chicken, mozzarella, green onions, shredded carrot, fresh basil and coriander. Fuel your day with the ‘omelette of champs’ - a colossal omelette packed full with spinach, tomatoes, mushrooms, peppers, cheese and tuna, or perhaps the ‘black bean breakfast burrito’ with egg, avocado, black beans, bacon and cheese. If you’re after a lighter dish, go for the Greek yoghurt, honey, fruit and coconut flakes. Whichever meal you choose, they’re all packed full of goodness and designed to keep you fuller for longer.

A modern take on a British cup of tea

I

love a nice cup of tea. I think tea is such a British beverage but it’s also a very Asian drink. So, with both my Asian heritage and British upbringing, it’s a given that I am a tea drinker! However, I think there’s more to drinking tea than JUST drinking tea... there is a whole social side to ‘having a nice cup of tea.’ No matter what’s going on in our lives, we can rely on someone putting the kettle on for that reassuring cuppa. Tea seems to fit all occasions; from offering tea and sympathy to an upset friend to the other end of the emotional scale and celebrating with tea and cake. So, this month I wanted to talk about Indian tea, called chai, which is becoming quite popular. This is a sweet, milky, fragrant tea flavoured with spices such as cinnamon, cardamom and fennel seeds. There are many different recipes for chai and they vary from region to region. I like to keep it quite

simple and just add cardamom. Authentic chai contains sugar, if you’re watching your sugar intake, then halve the quantity, but some sugar is required as it enhances the flavour of the cardamom. Try making my chai for yourself and next time a friend pops over, rather than having a ‘coffee and a catch up’, have a chai and chat.

Chai Recipe Cooking time: 10 mins Makes: approx. 6 cups INGREDIENTS 4 tea bags 6 cardamom pods 1 pint of water 1 pint of milk 4 tablespoons sugar METHOD 1. In a saucepan, add the tea bags, milk, water, sugar and cardamom (split the pods in half first). Stir and bring to the boil. 2. Now turn the heat to low and simmer for 10 minutes. Stir every now and again and keep an eye on the tea in case the milk boils over. 3. Using a fine metal tea strainer, pour tea into a teapot. Serve in tea cups or chai glasses. For a Vegan alternative, use soya or almond milk. For more recipes and Parveen’s cook book, log onto www.ParveenTheSpiceQueen.com For a chat and to taste my food, pop along to the ‘As & When’ event on 15th May at Greyhound Stadium 6pm - 9pm, www.helpasandwhen.co.uk

Connecting the dots... ... Bringing the community together Written by Zoe Phillips | Founder of As and When

I launched As and When in November, to make asking for help and contributing our skills, knowledge and talents an easier process.

I

have to say that the change has been fantastic. When I initially met my client for this editorial she was really struggling to cope with day to day things. Managing home life, separation and juggling children and a job; it’s really no wonder that she was suffering with anxiety and turning to alcohol to cope when things got too much. This way of life just isn’t manageable and also puts us in a constant state of fight or flight. This means that we can be out of touch with our feelings and when stress triggers, we respond with depression, anxiety or anger. These are primitive brain responses to constant negative thought. Working with this client has been a really valuable journey for me as well, building a positive relationship and connection with a client enables me to work better which helps the client respond well. The feedback after just 10 sessions of hypnotherapy has been lovely. My client now feels like she is in control. She can manage not only her separation but knows she holds the power to make the right choices in her life to move forward; thus being predominantly what solution focused hypnotherapy does –

allowing you to choose what small steps you can take to make things better. She is sleeping through the night and now really enjoying exercise. As a Hypnotherapist I notice the subtle changes in people too. Their appearance changes, they look brighter, happier and have a great sense of self-confidence about them. I will leave you with some very heart warming feedback from my client:

If you’re struggling with too much going on in your life, not knowing which way to turn, get in touch. Positive thoughts

“Well what can I say. I came to Hummingbird Hypnotherapy after I was diagnosed with severe anxiety from going through a divorce. During my first few sessions I was an absolute state. I was shaking and could hardly speak. I started to see an improvement after about 5 sessions and now after just 2 months of hypnotherapy I feel like a new person. I am more confident and much happier with myself. This has helped me deal with my anxiety and cope with things that go wrong in life so much better. I definitely recommend this to anyone else who is suffering with depression or anxiety. Thank you so much Nicole for everything you have done for me, I really do feel like a new person.”

Educating you to help look after your skin

S

pring is here and for most people it’s time to spring clean our house, as well as renewing, refreshing and rejuvenating our winter wardrobe. How about also taking stock of your health? I have been writing recently about harmful toxins, not only ‘you are what you eat’ but you are also ‘what you absorb’.

Did you know that nearly all skin conditions stem from the gut and 80% of Serotonin is in the gut? Serotonin is an important chemical and neurotransmitter in the human body. It is believed to help regulate mood and social behaviour, appetite and digestion, sleep, memory and sexual desire. Since 80% of skin conditions stem from the gut, what topical ingredients can we also become educated about to help our skin breathe again? There are no laws that govern the cosmetic society, the ingredients that are put into our everyday products are decided by the manufacturers. One key ingredients is mineral oil and you may be wondering why the word ‘mineral’ can be unhealthy? Minerals ARE healthy however, it is the molecular structure of mineral oil that blocks our pores. The molecules are

1

You are what you eat rb abso too large for the skin so it wraps around your skin like cling film, blocking your pores and interfering with your body’s natural respiration and secretion of toxins. If you have ever wondered why you have had prickly heat in the past, it is not the sun but the mineral oil content in your sunscreen. In fact, 96% of products on the market contain mineral oil. It can be disguised as a different name such as petroleum, petrolatum or paraffin and is often high up the list with a high percentage contained in the product. I highly recommend you downloading an app specifically designed for beauty products called Think Dirty. This app lets you scan a barcode or type in a product name and it will tell you of any potentially toxic ingredients. I just love the app’s interface and its easy-to-understand presentation of product information. Enjoy becoming an educated consumer on finding out about healthier, better, cleaner products that you and your family can use. I shall look forward to continuing our journey in the next issue. 5 reasons you should always remove your makeup at night

W

e’ve all been there – you’ve just got into bed, you’re feeling all cosy and warm, until you realise you’ve still got a full-face of makeup on. Deciding whether to take it off or just go to sleep is a dilemma most ladies have faced at some point in their lives. At the time, it may seem like the easy option to leave it on, but we can’t see the damage we’re doing to our skin.

2

The skin on your face is made up of pores, tiny little holes where sebum is produced, and toxins are removed. If you go to sleep with your makeup on, particularly if you wear a lot, your skin can’t breathe. When your pores become blocked, it causes spots and blackheads to develop.

3

It may cause eye infections

Need convincing? Here are 5 reasons why it’s so important to take your makeup off before going to sleep!

1

It could cause spots

Our eyes are sensitive at the best of times, especially the delicate skin around them. Eye makeup left on overnight is just asking for trouble. As we sleep, bits of product can get into our eyes, causing irritation and eventually, infection. Even if you get away without one, your eyelashes may become brittle and fall out.

Makeup contains chemicals

4

It contributes to aging

As we sleep, our skin goes through a renewal process, regenerating cells and repairing itself. When your skin has makeup on, it can’t breathe, which interferes with the natural repair mechanism. Throughout the day, environmental pollutants stick to your face, which increase oxidative stress if not removed.

5

Your pores will enlarge

Makeup left on overnight causes your pores to become clogged, preventing them from producing all-important collagen. Over time, they become more visible and are famously tricky to remove.

As much as you take the time choosing products suited to sensitive skin or made from organic ingredients, makeup still contains chemicals that can be harmful, especially if they’re left on for a whole day and night. These chemicals penetrate the delicate skin, blocking the natural secretion of sebum – the lubricant and moisturiser your skin makes.

Fresh!

Wash away the spring mud and let your pets be fresh for summer.

W

ith the end of the April showers, May is the time to clean your dog beds, cat beds and horse rugs. Like duvets, animal beds can harbour all kinds of disease causing organisms including bacterial, viral, parasitic and fungal species. Washing them on a regular basis minimises any risk to you and your pet.

What else now winter is over?

If the bed fits in your washing machine wash it at home. Vets recommend washing at a minimum of 60 degrees but check the care label to avoid the risk of damage. If the bed is too big for your machine take it to a launderette or your local Dry Cleaner.

How about trying one of these home-made methods:

As with duvets, animal beds need to be thoroughly dry and aired. Damp beds not only start to smell but can also be unpleasant and cause health issues for your pet.

Over the winter, items you stored may have been affected by mildew or mould which is unsightly and potentially unhealthy. Professional Dry Cleaners should be able to remove it from your items without damaging the fabric. However, excessive mildew may be difficult to remove completely.

1

Mix 80ml of undiluted lemon juice with salt to form a wet paste. Apply to the affected area. Gently scrub with a soft-bristled brush, being careful not to damage the fabric. Wash and dry as normal.

2

Mix equal quantities of warm water and vinegar. Dab or spray onto the affected area and leave for 10 minutes before generously apply baking soda to neutralise the vinegar. Wash and dry as normal.

Something different We love a nice car and so do some of our clients. We washed a car cover for a client’s Aston Martin to ensure the cover and car stay spic and span!

We cannot guarantee this will work but unless you scrub hard they are unlikely to damage cotton etc. We would not recommend these methods with delicate fabrics. Check the care label before treating any mark or stain on your clothes or fabrics. If in any doubt, seek professional advice. It is not advisable to apply water to dry clean only fabrics as it may shrink, distort or discolour some fabrics.

Ask Peters’ Cleaners Q - Can my washing machine harbour germs? Yes! Slowly evaporating moisture can eventually turn the drum into a germ incubator. To avoid the spread of bacteria and odours, pop 50g of baking soda into the drum and 50ml of white vinegar into the detergent drawer then run a 60 degree wash.

Some exciting news from Wilson&Co Homes, your local trusted independent Estate Agent.

W

e are delighted to announce that Wilson&Co Homes have exclusively partnered with Network E - a decision that is set to revolutionise the residential sales market. It’s a hybrid combining the speed and certainty of a traditional auction with the best elements of a private treaty sale - a game changer! All buyers, including those with related sales and mortgages can take part which means any property can be sold this way and with legal packs available prior to auction, bidders undertake their

due diligence before committing. When the auction closes our Exclusivity Agreement grants the buyer time to secure their mortgage prior to exchanging contracts and the seller undertakes not to sell to anyone else. The buyer pays a deposit in return for the Exclusivity Agreement which is forfeited if they withdraw. The sales process is expedited, sales progression is negligible while gazumping and gazundering are eliminated. This will bring some huge benefits to all – we will stand out from other agents and be able

to use Network E as a genuine differentiator in marketing your properties, and in turn, complete more sales! Network E ensures much greater certainty of a sale than a standard private treaty approach. There will be less abortive transactions and quicker completions. If you would like to find out more information about this revolutionary option to sell your home, please call 01733 893520. Solicitors undertake marathon walk in support of local charity

O

ver 25 partners and staff at local Law firm Hegarty Solicitors are preparing to embark on a mammoth 34 mile sponsored walk from Peterborough to Oakham, via Stamford on 9th June 2018. The walk aims to raise much needed funds supporting local charity ‘For Rutland’ to provide an adviser at Rutland Citizens Advice. The adviser offers free, confidential and impartial advice to local people affected by cancer, dementia, strokes and other long-term health conditions. At 34 miles, the walk is almost 8 miles longer than a marathon and is expected to take over 12

hours to complete. Starting out at the Hegarty Solicitors office in Peterborough, the route will take walkers to their office in Stamford, finishing at their office on South Street in Oakham. Sean Rowcliffe, Partner at Hegarty Solicitors says: “I am delighted to see so many staff members participating in the charity walk. The walk will help us raise funds for an exceptional cause. ‘For Rutland’ is our charity of the year and the marathon walk is one of many activities we

will be organising this year to raise vital funds for this great cause. Thank you to those who have donated already.” Donations can be made via the Hegarty Solicitors JustGiving page www.justgiving.com/ fundraising/hegarty-solicitors See more at www.hegarty.co.uk.

s d e e N e r a C e r u t Fu CONSIDERING

In this feature we will be looking at approaches to considering care needs

C

are can be an overwhelming, and daunting topic that we often dread considering or discussing with those we love. This feature will look at how to broach care and relieve some of the feelings we experience with this. Care is a subject that all of us hope we will never have to deal with, however in a world where we are all growing older, it is a subject that we all need more knowledge in. By knowing the options and sources of support available, this can relieve a lot of the emotional worry and stress that can occur. Care is a heartfelt subject that families considering care for loved ones will carry a lot of guilt with. But with some knowledge in knowing your love ones are cared for, and still in a respectful and person-centred way, it can create peace of mind and reassurance that the right decisions are being made. What are the types of care available?

• • • •

Residential Full Time Care Nursing Care – Residential Domiciliary Care (Home care) Day care

nursing based and can support with any nursing needs, whereas residential or retirement homes are purely for personal care support and helping with daily activities. Some care homes however, do have Nurses in the community that visit daily and can therefore provide you with more options. A good starting point when looking at which residential care home Is the right one is to look at the Care Quality Commission website: www.cqc.org.uk. Known as CQC they regulate all healthcare providers, by ensuring that services are safe, effective, caring, well-led and responsive. This website will show all recent inspections giving you a comprehensive summary of how the service is run.

TOP TIP Visit the Care Home, nursing or residential, at different times throughout the day, this will give you a real feel for how the setting runs giving you more peace of mind.

Residential or Nursing Care

Day Care

When first considering going into residential full time care it’s good to know that there are two types that residential care homes can offer. Some care homes are

Some residential and nursing care homes run several services such as respite care, so you can see if it’s a care service that works for your wishes. They also have

coffee mornings and activity days where you can go for a short period of time to get a feel for the setting.

Knowledge in knowing your love ones are cared for Domiciliary Care – Home Care There are lots of care providers who facilitate care visits from 30 minutes a visit to 24/7 or live in care within the comfort of your own home. This is great for those who feel they do not need support all the time but are maybe starting to find certain daily activities, such as getting in and out of the shower, difficult. Care Workers will visit your home at your specified chosen times and support you with domestic chores, personal care, dressing, meal preparation and medication needs as well as providing companionship. This can be a more financially viable option dependent on your needs. They will review your care on a regular basis and can increase or reduce visits as necessary. This focuses on personalised care bespoke to meet your needs. You may only need one visit a week to support you with changing bed sheets for example, or to go to your favourite café in town.

CA R E H E L P & A DV I C E

TOP TIP Ask the care provider to show you some testimonials from current or recent customers. This will give you a feel of who they are and how they run the service.

Home care focuses on enabling independent living surrounded by your loved ones or memories. It can also be an introduction into receiving Care Support and help relieve the worry of facing the need for support further along the line. The legal bit Often the daunting part can be all the legal side that comes with care needs. It is important that the individual receiving care

understands their rights. Or those supporting family members have the correct consent to make decisions on the individuals behalf. Often Power of Attorney is advised – to find out more seek contact with your Solicitor who can give you accurate information on how to ensure you are abiding by the law.

peace of mind and reassurance that the right decisions are being made Everybody should be given the right to make their own decisions about how they receive care. All healthcare providers will operate by regulations to ensure this happens.

39

Probate is often associated and discussed with families and its important to understand what this is and how to ensure you receive the best advice and instruction. “When moving into care, one aspect families often begin to think about is Wills and Probate. Having an up to date Will helps to ensure that a person’s Estate is handled by someone that they trust and that their assets pass to the people they want them to. Probate is not always required to administer an Estate and so it is always worth getting professional advice first, which many companies found online will provide free of charge.” Samantha Wright Wright Care 01780 489227 www.wrightcareathome.co.uk

Would you like to be able to access the community still? Visit the local shops? Go out for the day? Visit a favourite place? Go for a walk? Out for coffee or for a pub lunch? Finish that favourite jigsaw? Enjoy a cup of tea? Or even just have some company in the comfort of your own home?

Companionship Matters As the cold days and dark nights draw in it can be a time where we feel staying indoors is the only option. We can create a care package that is tailored to your needs.

Our team not only support with Personal care, meal preparation, medication needs and domestic chores but with companionship too.

Legal arrangements for paying for care Can your Will help secure your home against care fees?

C

are provision in the UK is changing. Local Authorities may use your assets (if they are above £23,250) to help towards the cost of care, resulting in your home potentially being put at risk. Most couples own homes as joint tenants and leave everything to each other in their Will so that on the death of the first spouse everything passes to the survivor. In this situation one solution is that the home may be sold to pay for residential care.

To stop this happening and to prevent the house passing automatically to the survivor, couples can alter how they own their property to enable their respective shares to pass under their Wills. First they must sever the joint tenancy. Wills should then be altered so that the half that belongs to the first spouse is left in trust for the survivor for life. Ownership of the home will then be between the Trust and the survivor who still has the right to live in the property.

May 2018 | E: info@scenepublishing.co.uk | T: 01778 382762

With the Trustees’ consent, the surviving spouse can sell and move to a new home. If the money from the sale is higher than the Trust’s initial share, it can be invested to provide an income which could be used to pay for care fees, leaving the Trust’s initial capital safe. The benefit of this is that the surviving spouse’s share in the house can be taken into account when the Local Authority are assessing the payment of care fees but the trust capital cannot. Only the surviving spouse’s right

CA R E H E L P & A DV I C E

to the income of the trust capital can be taken into account. In reality, if the Local Authority want the surviving spouse to sell the house they would not be able to as there is not much of a market for half a house! Local Authorities can demand payment for care once the property has been sold from the surviving spouse’s share of the capital but the Trust capital is protected to pass onto children and beneficiaries. However, it should be noted that this does not work if the couple require care at the same time.

41

Is it easier to give your share of the house to your children on first death? Not necessarily. A child may die, divorce, go bankrupt, or even fall out with you. The house could then be sold without the surviving spouse’s consent. Please seek professional advice and contact the Wills, Trusts & Probate Team at Hunt & Coombs Solicitors on 01733 882800 or visit our website www.hcsolicitors.co.uk for more information.

Here, we look at the issues and discussions that families need to have before a person needs care.

L

ong Term Care – three words that provoke anxiety, fear and confusion in the older generation. But it doesn’t have to be like that. Here are some things for your consideration: Who, When and Where. The first conversation you need to have as a family is about attitudes to care. Many people want to be cared for in their own home for as long as is possible. Others may choose sheltered accommodation. Some realise that a care home or nursing home is right for them. Whatever your attitude towards care, make sure it’s known and shared amongst those who may have to make decisions for you. The Cost of Care. It isn’t cheap, whatever solution you choose. A carer visiting the family home for an hour morning, noon and night will cost around £75 a day. The daily cost is for 365 days a year, an additional £27,000 per year on top of your normal household expenses.

Care homes cost on an average around £800 or £41,600 per year. For this you get 24/7 care. When you consider the savings you’ll make from not having normal household expenses and the potential income from renting out the family home, the difference between care in the home and a residential facility is not that great. Be aware that specialist care facilities can cost much more.

your will is one of the best ways to protect your assets for future generations. There are people who offer 24/7 live in care or you can employ staff yourself. But be aware that to cover 24/7 care with the legal minimum wage, and maximum working hours you will need to have a team of five carers. Costs for this would range from £100,000 £130,000 per year. Who Pays. In most cases the person receiving care will pay the bills. If you have over £23,250 in assessable assets, then you are liable to pay the whole cost of care. Below £14,500 and the local authority will pay. What is assessable

May 2018 | E: info@scenepublishing.co.uk | T: 01778 382762

varies depending on your circumstances and the care you are receiving. This is an area where it really pays to take professional advice. People forget they are the customer, not a patient. There is no reason to put up with poor levels of service or shoddy treatment - if you were spending up to £1000 per week on something else, you would expect the very best, most luxurious service. It should be the same with care provision. The Role of the Local Authority. Your local authority will provide a Care Needs Assessment when asked to do so, providing you with a plan for your needs. They will also carry out a financial assessment, judging your ability to pay and what, if any, support you may be entitled to. If you have assets below £14,500 your local authority will fund your care. A warning - recent legislation has removed the local authority’s duty to consult with family so they can make care decisions without reference to your loved ones. LPA Property and Financial Affairs. Lasting Powers of Attorney are essential documents - they allow someone else to make decisions for you when you can’t make decisions for yourself. This one means you bills will get paid and your home will be maintained and insured. Your investments will be managed for your best interests. Ultimately if required, your attorneys could sell your home.

CA R E H E L P & A DV I C E

LPA Health and Welfare. Arguably more important than the financial LPA, although you should have both. It enables your family to talk to your doctor and the people who are treating you which means the people you trust will be making decisions about care for you, not the local authority. Pre-paying your Funeral. Everyone is entitled to a funeral. By paying for it in advance you can reduce your assessable assets meaning that come the end of your life your family will have more to distribute to your heirs. It also means you get your funeral at today’s prices which can mean a significant further saving for your estate. Making sure your Will is up to date. Two thirds of people don’t have a valid up to date Will. You need to ensure that yours reflects

your circumstances and your wishes before you need long term care. Your Will is one of the best ways to protect your assets for future generations. Caring for an elderly relative who has already lost capacity. If you have an elderly relative who needs care but has already

49

lost capacity, it’s not too late. An application to the Court of Protection could see you appointed as ‘Deputy’ for your relative which means you will be able to make financial decisions on their behalf and in their best interests. You may also be able to make the care decisions that need to be taken to protect your loved one. This is a big subject. Will & Probate Services have been specialist advisors in this complex area for some 13 years. We can help you in all the areas mentioned - we can facilitate family meetings and discussions and will ensure all legal documents are correctly drawn up and reflect your wishes. “I like to think we offer choice and provide peace of mind.” We take pride in making sure the service we provide is exactly what is required. For some a quiet chat and some companionship makes all the difference while other people need more specialist, complex care. Q: How does it work? Leisa: When we get an inquiry we make a thorough, initial assessment to understand what a person is looking for. We want to know what practical support they need but also what is important to them and often what is important to their loved ones and family. We often take care of couples or support one of the couple while allowing the other partner to rest as their main carer. They will be assigned an individual carer or a care team who fully understand what is expected of them and have been through rigorous and continuous training at Bluebird Care. We work with GP’s, nurses, occupational therapists and social workers. Q: Why do you do it and what do you love about it? Leisa: We started Bluebird Care in Stamford seven years ago with both Tim and I donning our uniforms and delivering care so we really understand what we do. We know just how important the role of Carer is as a true vocation and a profession and just how important care is to each customer. We have a growing team with over 60 caring Bluebird Care

staff, supporting over 100 customers. It has been very hard work involving long hours and dedication to meet the values and standards of excellence we want but the satisfaction of knowing we are making a real difference to people’s lives and leading the change in our industry is our reward. I feel very privileged to be able to help and so do all our team who are just as dedicated. We succeeded in making all our calls through the bad snow in March though I did have to mount one rescue operation when a carer’s car got stuck, but we made it to all our customer calls throughout the bout of bad weather. I was so proud of my care staff. It is at these times you see the team come together. Q: What area does Bluebird Care Peterborough & Rutland cover? Leisa: We cover a wide area including Stamford, Ryhall, Market Deeping, Peterborough, Castor, Wansford, Oakham, Uppingham, Oundle and all the villages in between. Henry Penn – our 17th & 18th century bellfounder and his foundry works in Bridge Street

CASTING THE BELLS

H

enry Penn (b.1685; d.1729) cast more than 250 bells at his Bridge Street foundry which was on the site of what is now Peterborough Magistrates Court. Back then a canal named Bell Dyke ran behind the foundry which joined the River Nene.

52

June and Vernon Bull – Local Historians and Authors

Most of Penn’s bronze bells were transported on barges and went to over 100 churches, schools and homes across England. Twenty years before his death he cast the first of 10 bells for Peterborough Cathedral. The largest of these weighed 1½ tons and is named The City Bell. The latter strikes out the time on the Cathedral clock. Other bells from the ten cast by Penn in 1709 for Peterborough Cathedral have since found their way to America, as the last surviving Cathedral bells (cast by him) were replaced in 1987.

It is thought that Penn moved to Peterborough in 1708/09 to a row of houses, named Rotten Row (on the east of Bridge Street), owned by his wife’s family - the Shepherds. It was here that he established his foundry. As a master bellfounder, Henry Penn was able to start his new business because he knew there was enough work in the town and its

surrounds, and because he had the right location of premises, as well as the means of transport for it to succeed. Penn was able to take on enough work and it is said that he put the nearest bellfounder – the Norris family of Stamford - out of business. The latter cast some of the bells for Peterborough Parish Church, St John the Baptist, Cathedral Square and it is interesting to note that Henry and his wife Diana had their 8 children baptised at that location.

to have their names cast on the church bells so that their names would live on. He certainly appears to have been very savvy about his customers and their requirements. These attributes made him a great salesman. Penn, ever the self-employed entrepreneur, seems to have ventured into the medical world, as in the few years from 1715 onwards, he started to make a frame for both sexes where they had managed to rupture discs in their spine. These trusses were made of metal plate and held in position with leather straps.

53

Today Henry Penn is remembered by way of a sculpture erected close to his foundry, titled “Voice of the City”. It was unveiled on 20 December 2017 at lower Bridge Street and depicts the stages of a bell being cast. The 5m high sculpture was created by artist Stephen Broadbent. In Penn’s honour the walkway between Bridge Street and the Riverside car park has been renamed “Foundry Walk”. Additionally, the sculpture is sited a few meters away from “Henry Penn Walk” which runs near Rivergate and along the River Nene.

Penn quickly realised that there were many old bells which could be recast and thus there was little need for the tin and copper to be mixed in the foundry to make bronze. He was said to be rugged and hard-working and many deals were made with the shake or clasp of hands, or by a gentleman’s agreement. He would travel far and stay overnight to clinch a deal but always having done his homework first. Penn would always inquire at the local hostelry where the Churchwardens lived before visiting the church and chatting to the vicar to secure a sale. He totally understood that Churchwardens would be happy

Brian Jones – Local Historian

John Cecil and the development of Burghley hile significant changes were happening along the Welland river/ canal in the late 17th and early 18th centuries, a not dissimilar change was happening at the Burghley home of the Cecil family. With the return of the Monarchy, Burghley began to grow again. Born in 1648, John Cecil would have become aware of the Civil War – and the opportunities the return of the Monarchy could offer. This John was different to those that had gone before him and, when he succeeded his father as the 5th Earl of Exeter, he began to change his ancestor’s Elizabethan ideas with things more modern. Those changes were helped by his love of travel. He was one of the very first real ‘Grand Tourists’ making a number of long journeys through France and Italy. He did not travel alone! His first journey began in October 1679 when John was accompanied by his Countess, their 2 sons, 2 gentleman soldiers, Mr Child his chaplain, Culpepper Tanner John’s steward, 5 female

and 14 male servants, 30 horses, a mule, 2 dogs, a carriage, a wagon and a litter! On their way south they visited the Gobelins factory in Paris – a workshop that had been established by King Louis XIV in 1662 to supply furnishings for the French royal palaces. John Cecil commissioned two tapestries, both of which can be seen at Burghley today. There were, however, some difficulties about

This John was different to those that had gone before him the money that Culpepper had to pay. The delay was two years! In Italy they visited Genoa, Leghorn, Padua, Naples, Venice, Florence and Rome and, at each of the last three stopping points, they acquired paintings. John and his staff returned to England in 1681. Meanwhile things were moving on a pace at Burghley. Thomas

Stretch had Culpepper’s role as steward and was managing a wide range of activities. Jean Tijou, a French Huguenot ironworker had arrived in England in the late 1680s and enjoyed the royal patronage of William & Mary having made their gates and railings for Hampton Court Palace. At Burghley he made the Golden Gates for the West Front of the house – and they stand there to this day. Jean’s son-in-law, Louis Laguerre, was a decorative painter and was also ‘at home’ at Burghley. His skills can be seen as you look up to the celling in the Bow Room as you walk round. The third ‘decorator’ we have at this time is one Antonio Verrio who we first met last October at Uffington decorating their staircases, walls and ceilings. At Burghley his project was immense – 5 large rooms looking south across the family landscape. He was working with a team on the project from 1686 to 1697 – 4 rooms with illustrated ceilings and a 5th with illustrated walls as well. It was over, incomplete, when Antonio’s advancing poor sight caused his departure. In August 1700 John was returning on his 4th journey from Italy via France when he developed an acute illness and died of a ‘surfeit of fruit’. It would be some 50 years before Burghley began developing further!

SUMMER HOTSPOTS Dreaming of warmer days? Turning your thoughts to your summer holiday? May - September is such a good time for European travel, with shorter flying time and of course, excellent weather conditions and here is Inspirational Travel’s guide to some of the best hotspots this summer! Greece Rich in culture with stunning scenery and landscapes, a holiday to Greece is hard to beat. With a flight time of just 3-4 hours and British Airways covering most key destinations in the summer months as well as the low-cost carriers flying to most destinations, it’s no wonder that Greece is such a popular choice. Whether you are looking at the natural beauty of the mainland or one of the many islands (there are actually 1,400 split between

the Mediterranean, Ionian and Aegean seas), there is certainly something for everyone. Each island has its own special character and charm and which one to visit really is down to personal choice. The largest of the islands is Crete, which is known for its magnificent landscapes and beautiful beaches, but if you are looking for something a little livelier, Corfu boasts some of the best nightlife in Greece. With a combination of rugged mountains and sleepy hillside villages mixed with action-packed beaches and vibrant resorts, Corfu certainly has all bases covered. For a more romantic destination, stunning

Santorini has picture-postcard white-washed villages and the most incredible sunsets! Away from the popular islands, Halkidiki is a peninsula off the Greek mainland and is great for families, offering the largest stretch of coastline in Greece and fabulous golden beaches. There is a good selection of hotels with kid’s entertainment programmes and warm hospitality guaranteeing a perfect family holiday. With an amazing variety of accommodation, from budget self-catering apartments to luxury villas and the finest 5-star boutique hotels, Greece certainly has it all. So whichever destination you choose, you will not be disappointed!

Each island has its own special character and charm Cyprus Known as the island of Aphrodite, the goddess of love, Cyprus is a picturesque island in the Eastern Mediterranean, with long hot summers and mild winters. The flight time is 4-5 hours and Cyprus has 2 main airports – Paphos in the west and Larnaca in the south east – with flights operated by British Airways, Easyjet, Jet2 and Ryanair from most UK airports. Getting around is easy and if you are planning to hire a car, the good news is they drive on the left-hand side of the road! Rich in culture, history and stunning scenery, Cyprus has a number of popular resorts from young and lively to family-friendly, all with excellent restaurants and traditional tavernas. The local cuisine has a mixture of Greek,

Turkish and Middle Eastern influences and a visit to a Meze Bar (a selection of local delicacies in bite-size) is a must! Ayia Napa is known as the party capital of Cyprus and you can certainly have fun here 24/7 but away from its vibrant nightlife, you will find fabulous beaches and stunning scenery. Paphos is situated on the south west coast and is one of the most popular destinations in Cyprus. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site and is steeped in history and charm and appeals to all ages. A short distance from Paphos is the

famous Coral Bay, known for its beautiful Blue Flag beach, which is perfect for relaxing in the sun. Limassol is Cyprus’ largest resort, with a busy port and charming narrow streets where you will find an excellent selection of shops, bars and restaurants. It’s no wonder the Cypriots are so proud of their island. Whatever type of accommodation you choose, you can an expect excellent standards and service. Combine this with fabulous beaches, year-round sunshine and delicious cuisine, Cyprus is a jewel in the Mediterranean waiting to be discovered.

Holidays to Greece and its islands and Cyprus can be booked through local travel specialists Inspirational Travel. Call 01778 382764 or email info@inspirational-travel.com to discuss your summer holiday plans.

Film Buffs and Bookworms

L

Watch the movie, read the book, or both?!

ike me, you may have an immensely large DVD collection sitting in a drawer somewhere in your home. But did you know that many of them may be based on books? Harry Potter, The Hunger Games, Twilight Saga, Jurassic Park and Divergent aside; because almost everyone knows they are based on books, not many people really pay attention to a book and just prefer to watch the film. Did you know Forrest Gump was based on a book? Yup. Written in 1986 by Winston Groom. What about Full Metal Jacket? Oh yes. Written by Gustav Hasford in 1979 and titled The Short-Timers. How about classic The Godfather? Absolutely. Written by Mario Puzo in 1969, bearing the same name as the film. In fact, many of the most popular films of the last 100 years have been based on an original book. Now, most people have already noticed the differences in the Harry Potter films compared to the books (Neville Longbottom killing Nagini instead of Ron Weasley

anyone?), but does reading the book before the film or after make the most difference? Should you read the book for a film? My answer is undoubtedly yes! Personally, I like to read the book first and then watch the film, although this tends to really annoy me more when I pick out the many different aspects of the film. You see, filmmakers must condense the source material to fit into 2 hours or so, which can be extremely difficult. But do they really need to change the entire way the book played out? Absolutely not! Case in point, Ready Player One! Now I could go on for days about the differences between Ernest Cline’s fantastic book and the excellent film of the same name, but you can listen to my Podcast episode on it, which you can find on the links below. My questions are these: Should the books be given the same love and affection a film is given? Should the books be promoted just as much as the film (RPO was, admittedly, used highly in the marketing for the film) and should filmmakers be more attentive to the plot in the books as opposed to just changing it how they see fit (I am looking

May 2018 | E: info@scenepublishing.co.uk | T: 01778 382762

at you Mr Spielberg!) What do you think? Let me know on Facebook or Twitter. Other notable films based on books: Jaws (1975 by Peter Benchley), A Clockwork Orange (1962 by Anthony Burgess), The Talented Mr Ripley (1955 by Patricia Highsmith), Blade Runner (by Phillip K. Dick and titled Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep).

NENE VALLEY CELEBRATING THE

Exciting plans underway for Nene Park as part of ‘Nenescape’ project

A series of heritage-focused projects are now underway to encourage people to explore new areas of Nene Park in Peterborough. The plans form part of the Nenescape Landscape Partnership Scheme, a Heritage Lottery funded project celebrating the natural and built heritage of the Nene Valley. The Walking in Time project, taking place over the next 5 years, will inspire people to explore the area on foot. The

plans include the creation of a ‘Walking with Romans’ heritage trail, the restoration of Castor Station Master’s cottage garden, improvements to riverside walking The biggest grant-funded project we’ve ever been involved in routes and the creation of new art pieces for Park gateways. Adrian Oates, Head of Fundraising at Nene Park Trust

said: “We’re really excited to be part of this initiative. It’s the biggest grant-funded project we’ve ever been involved in. There will be lots of opportunities for people to get involved - we’ll be seeking volunteers, artists and help in many forms during the project, and in return we can offer new skills, fun, wellbeing and teamwork!” Further initiatives include Growing Skills, which will see the Trust take on two apprentices to learn about greenspace management, and Bringing Nature Closer, restoring ditches on two floodplain meadows and manage water levels so they can be kept wetter for longer to attract wildlife. Interested in acting? Follow in the footsteps of Peterborough student Jess Gioia

I

’ve been running The Young Actors Company (YAC) Peterborough branch for over ten years which has been a thriving Cambridgeshire based training school and agency for creative children for over four decades. What delights me more than anything is to see actors develop more confidence in themselves so this month, I’m highlighting one of my former Peterborough students: Jess Gioia.

It isn’t just about the talent but it’s the opportunity for self-expression and confidence-building

> Peterborough Stage & Screen Academy

Jess was always an enthusiastic and talented actress but having gone on to train professionally, she has received plaudits for her self-developed show Couch Cast - a response to the recent Hollywood abuse scandal. Jess graduates this year and will be another example of our YAC alumni forging a career in the entertainment business. I’m really proud of her and also what we do for young people as a company. It isn’t just about the talent (although that helps!) but it’s the opportunity for self-expression and confidence-building that really sets YAC apart. From September we are becoming the ‘Peterborough Stage and Screen Academy’ and we will be providing four hours of focussed training for young people aged 12 - 18. We concentrate on core acting skills (not musical or dance training) and we seek to develop confidence and ability. Our teachers are working professionals and we lead by example not curriculum.

9:30 - 13:30 Saturdays at Peterborough Regional College Age range: 12yrs to 18yrs

I’m excited to share more about YAC over the coming months in Scene Magazine. If you are interested in more info about YAC, and registering for the summer auditions please visit: www.theyoungactorscompany.com @YoungActorsCo The Young Actors Company
