In this feature we will be looking at approaches to considering care needs
C
are can be an overwhelming, and daunting topic that we often dread considering or discussing with those we love. This feature will look at how to broach care and relieve some of the feelings we experience with this. Care is a subject that all of us hope we will never have to deal with, however in a world where we are all growing older, it is a subject that we all need more knowledge in. By knowing the options and sources of support available, this can relieve a lot of the emotional worry and stress that can occur. Care is a heartfelt subject that families considering care for loved ones will carry a lot of guilt with. But with some knowledge in knowing your love ones are cared for, and still in a respectful and person-centred way, it can create peace of mind and reassurance that the right decisions are being made. What are the types of care available?

nursing based and can support with any nursing needs, whereas residential or retirement homes are purely for personal care support and helping with daily activities. Some care homes however, do have Nurses in the community that visit daily and can therefore provide you with more options. A good starting point when looking at which residential care home Is the right one is to look at the Care Quality Commission website: www.cqc.org.uk. Known as CQC they regulate all healthcare providers, by ensuring that services are safe, effective, caring, well-led and responsive. This website will show all recent inspections giving you a comprehensive summary of how the service is run.
TOP TIP Visit the Care Home, nursing or residential, at different times throughout the day, this will give you a real feel for how the setting runs giving you more peace of mind.

When first considering going into residential full time care it’s good to know that there are two types that residential care homes can offer. Some care homes are
Some residential and nursing care homes run several services such as respite care, so you can see if it’s a care service that works for your wishes. They also have

coffee mornings and activity days where you can go for a short period of time to get a feel for the setting.
Knowledge in knowing your love ones are cared for Domiciliary Care – Home Care There are lots of care providers who facilitate care visits from 30 minutes a visit to 24/7 or live in care within the comfort of your own home. This is great for those who feel they do not need support all the time but are maybe starting to find certain daily activities, such as getting in and out of the shower, difficult. Care Workers will visit your home at your specified chosen times and support you with domestic chores, personal care, dressing, meal preparation and medication needs as well as providing companionship. This can be a more financially viable option dependent on your needs. They will review your care on a regular basis and can increase or reduce visits as necessary. This focuses on personalised care bespoke to meet your needs. You may only need one visit a week to support you with changing bed sheets for example, or to go to your favourite café in town.

TOP TIP Ask the care provider to show you some testimonials from current or recent customers. This will give you a feel of who they are and how they run the service.
Home care focuses on enabling independent living surrounded by your loved ones or memories. It can also be an introduction into receiving Care Support and help relieve the worry of facing the need for support further along the line. The legal bit Often the daunting part can be all the legal side that comes with care needs. It is important that the individual receiving care

understands their rights. Or those supporting family members have the correct consent to make decisions on the individuals behalf. peace of mind and reassurance that the right decisions are being made Everybody should be given the right to make their own decisions about how they receive care. All healthcare providers will operate by regulations to ensure this happens.

Probate is often associated and discussed with families and its important to understand what this is and how to ensure you receive the best advice and instruction. “When moving into care, one aspect families often begin to think about is Wills and Probate. Having an up to date Will helps to ensure that a person’s Estate is handled by someone that they trust and that their assets pass to the people they want them to. Probate is not always required to administer an Estate and so it is always worth getting professional advice first, which many companies found online will provide free of charge.” Samantha Wright Wright Care 01780 489227 www.wrightcareathome.co.uk
Would you like to be able to access the community still? Visit the local shops? Go out for the day? Visit a favourite place? Go for a walk? Out for coffee or for a pub lunch? Finish that favourite jigsaw? Enjoy a cup of tea? Or even just have some company in the comfort of your own home?
Companionship Matters As the cold days and dark nights draw in it can be a time where we feel staying indoors is the only option. We can create a care package that is tailored to your needs.
Our team not only support with Personal care, meal preparation, medication needs and domestic chores but with companionship too.

Legal arrangements for paying for care Can your Will help secure your home against care fees?
C
are provision in the UK is changing. Local Authorities may use your assets (if they are above £23,250) to help towards the cost of care, resulting in your home potentially being put at risk. Most couples own homes as joint tenants and leave everything to each other in their Will so that on the death of the first spouse everything passes to the survivor. In this situation one solution is that the home may be sold to pay for residential care.
To stop this happening and to prevent the house passing automatically to the survivor, couples can alter how they own their property to enable their respective shares to pass under their Wills. First they must sever the joint tenancy. Wills should then be altered so that the half that belongs to the first spouse is left in trust for the survivor for life. Ownership of the home will then be between the Trust and the survivor who still has the right to live in the property.
May 2018 | E: info@scenepublishing.co.uk | T: 01778 382762
With the Trustees’ consent, the surviving spouse can sell and move to a new home. If the money from the sale is higher than the Trust’s initial share, it can be invested to provide an income which could be used to pay for care fees, leaving the Trust’s initial capital safe. The benefit of this is that the surviving spouse’s share in the house can be taken into account when the Local Authority are assessing the payment of care fees but the trust capital cannot. Only the surviving spouse’s right

to the income of the trust capital can be taken into account. In reality, if the Local Authority want the surviving spouse to sell the house they would not be able to as there is not much of a market for half a house! Local Authorities can demand payment for care once the property has been sold from the surviving spouse’s share of the capital but the Trust capital is protected to pass onto children and beneficiaries. However, it should be noted that this does not work if the couple require care at the same time.

Is it easier to give your share of the house to your children on first death? Not necessarily. A child may die, divorce, go bankrupt, or even fall out with you. The house could then be sold without the surviving spouse’s consent. Here, we look at the issues and discussions that families need to have before a person needs care.
L
ong Term Care – three words that provoke anxiety, fear and confusion in the older generation. But it doesn’t have to be like that. Here are some things for your consideration: Who, When and Where. The first conversation you need to have as a family is about attitudes to care. Many people want to be cared for in their own home for as long as is possible. Others may choose sheltered accommodation. Some realise that a care home or nursing home is right for them. Whatever your attitude towards care, make sure it’s known and shared amongst those who may have to make decisions for you. The Cost of Care. It isn’t cheap, whatever solution you choose. A carer visiting the family home for an hour morning, noon and night will cost around £75 a day. The daily cost is for 365 days a year, an additional £27,000 per year on top of your normal household expenses.
Care homes cost on an average around £800 or £41,600 per year. For this you get 24/7 care. When you consider the savings you’ll make from not having normal household expenses and the potential income from renting out the family home, the difference between care in the home and a residential facility is not that great. Be aware that specialist care facilities can cost much more.
your will is one of the best ways to protect your assets for future generations. There are people who offer 24/7 live in care or you can employ staff yourself. But be aware that to cover 24/7 care with the legal minimum wage, and maximum working hours you will need to have a team of five carers. Costs for this would range from £100,000 £130,000 per year. Who Pays. In most cases the person receiving care will pay the bills. If you have over £23,250 in assessable assets, then you are liable to pay the whole cost of care. Below £14,500 and the local authority will pay. What is assessable
May 2018 | E: info@scenepublishing.co.uk | T: 01778 382762
varies depending on your circumstances and the care you are receiving. This is an area where it really pays to take professional advice. People forget they are the customer, not a patient. There is no reason to put up with poor levels of service or shoddy treatment - if you were spending up to £1000 per week on something else, you would expect the very best, most luxurious service. It should be the same with care provision. The Role of the Local Authority. Your local authority will provide a Care Needs Assessment when asked to do so, providing you with a plan for your needs. They will also carry out a financial assessment, judging your ability to pay and what, if any, support you may be entitled to. If you have assets below £14,500 your local authority will fund your care. A warning - recent legislation has removed the local authority’s duty to consult with family so they can make care decisions without reference to your loved ones. LPA Property and Financial Affairs. Lasting Powers of Attorney are essential documents - they allow someone else to make decisions for you when you can’t make decisions for yourself. This one means you bills will get paid and your home will be maintained and insured. Your investments will be managed for your best interests. Ultimately if required, your attorneys could sell your home.
CA R E H E L P & A DV I C E
LPA Health and Welfare. Arguably more important than the financial LPA, although you should have both. It enables your family to talk to your doctor and the people who are treating you which means the people you trust will be making decisions about care for you, not the local authority. Pre-paying your Funeral. Everyone is entitled to a funeral. By paying for it in advance you can reduce your assessable assets meaning that come the end of your life your family will have more to distribute to your heirs. It also means you get your funeral at today’s prices which can mean a significant further saving for your estate. Making sure your Will is up to date. Two thirds of people don’t have a valid up to date Will. You need to ensure that yours reflects
your circumstances and your wishes before you need long term care. Your Will is one of the best ways to protect your assets for future generations. Caring for an elderly relative who has already lost capacity. If you have an elderly relative who needs care but has already
49
lost capacity, it’s not too late. An application to the Court of Protection could see you appointed as ‘Deputy’ for your relative which means you will be able to make financial decisions on their behalf and in their best interests. You may also be able to make the care decisions that need to be taken to protect your loved one. This is a big subject. Will & Probate Services have been specialist advisors in this complex area for some 13 years. We can help you in all the areas mentioned - we can facilitate family meetings and discussions and will ensure all legal documents are correctly drawn up and reflect your wishes. “I like to think we offer choice and provide peace of mind.” We take pride in making sure the service we provide is exactly what is required. For some a quiet chat and some companionship makes all the difference while other people need more specialist, complex care. Q: How does it work? Leisa: When we get an inquiry we make a thorough, initial assessment to understand what a person is looking for. We want to know what practical support they need but also what is important to them and often what is important to their loved ones and family. We often take care of couples or support one of the couple while allowing the other partner to rest as their main carer. They will be assigned an individual carer or a care team who fully understand what is expected of them and have been through rigorous and continuous training at Bluebird Care. We work with GP’s, nurses, occupational therapists and social workers. Q: Why do you do it and what do you love about it? Leisa: We started Bluebird Care in Stamford seven years ago with both Tim and I donning our uniforms and delivering care so we really understand what we do. We know just how important the role of Carer is as a true vocation and a profession and just how important care is to each customer. We have a growing team with over 60 caring Bluebird Care
staff, supporting over 100 customers. It has been very hard work involving long hours and dedication to meet the values and standards of excellence we want but the satisfaction of knowing we are making a real difference to people’s lives and leading the change in our industry is our reward. I feel very privileged to be able to help and so do all our team who are just as dedicated. We succeeded in making all our calls through the bad snow in March though I did have to mount one rescue operation when a carer’s car got stuck, but we made it to all our customer calls throughout the bout of bad weather. I was so proud of my care staff. It is at these times you see the team come together. Q: What area does Bluebird Care Peterborough & Rutland cover?
