THIS

Happy birthday month to me!

O

nce my special day is out of the way, I will have time and energy to focus on Christmas. Many of my friends have already been crimble shopping – but I like to wait so I can enjoy the lights, the music and the mulled wine and immerse myself in the festive spirit. However, for those keen to get a head start, this month’s Scene has lots of Christmas gift ideas. Queensgate Centre has announced its dates for Black Friday, so all you bargain hunters should head to the centre on 24 November where the shops will open at 8am! We introduce a new chef to The Stage in Market Deeping and a new venue in the city – The Light Box, which will offer high-end café service during the day and a wine and cocktail bar by night. On a different note, one of the biggest concerns we have these days is quality care for our older relatives. It is a large part of our lives now and is something we have never had to consider as much as we do today. We have many partners we work with that offer various levels of care at home as well as care in a home. Thankfully the quality of these services

Editor’Ss PICK has improved significantly over the years, and we feel safe in the knowledge that our elderly are very well cared for. We have a 10-page feature to help guide you through the options available locally and where to seek help and advice from the experts. As well as all this, we have usual exciting features on history, homes, gardening, beauty, health and what’s on locally. So, enjoy the read!

MEET ME IN

T

he team behind Michelin Guide-listed Zada, on Stamford’s St Mary’s Hill, has opened a second restaurant in the area, bringing a taste of the Mediterranean, specifically Morocco, to Peterborough’s increasingly diverse food scene. Tavan, which opened midOctober, has taken over the restaurant space at the Pearl Hotel, (previously Mai Thai) at the top end of Lincoln Road and will be serving authentic, home-style Morrocan and Turkish cuisine, with recipes passed down from

the chefs’ mothers and grandmothers. Tavan promises to be an immersive experience for diners, with vibrant dishes abundant in colour, flavour and aroma served in a relaxed, fun environment; if the team’s success at Zada is anything to go by, city diners will be in for a treat.

FESTIVE BIRDS The crafty distillers at Two Birds are spreading the festive spirit with the return of their warming Christmas Spiced Vodka. Smooth English vodka, produced in Two Bird’s purpose-built distillery using English barley and sugar beet, is infused for three days with a blend of cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg and dried fruit, then dispensed into hand-decorated bottles. Christmas Spiced Vodka is available in 20cl or 70cl (£15/ £37), or as part of a Christmas gift pack which includes the quaffable After Dinner Mint Vodka (£24 for 2x20cl), or maybe a bottle of Cherry and Almond Vodka (£32) – perfect enjoying on its own or in a bakewell tart martini. Two Birds also sells gin gift packs (£24), a gin trilogy (£32.97) and for serious gin-ests, a threehour masterclass with a Ginstructor in the Two Birds Workshop (£110).

SAY CHEESE! The Stamford Cheese Cellar is one of my favourite shops to visit in the lead up to Christmas, not only does it sell a wonderful variety of hard and soft cheeses – perfect for those festive cheese boards – it also has a fantastic selection of crackers and condiments. The knowledgable staff and owners Karen and George Brammer are always on hand to give recommendations and suggest cheese/ cracker/chutney pairings. The Stamford Cheese Cellar has an array of beautifully presented artisanal gins kept under lock and key in display cabinets, alongside vodkas, ports, whisky and sparkling English wines. It’s the perfect place to pick up a special Christmas tipple to share at the table.

SILENT Cholesterol – do you know your numbers?

D

o you consider yourself to be healthy? Eat a healthy diet, don’t smoke and take regular exercise? Then you also likely feel high cholesterol isn’t a concern for you. However, it is estimated more than half of adults in England have a higher than recommended cholesterol level – are you one of them? High cholesterol is known as the silent killer as it doesn’t have any symptoms – until it is too late. So take a few moments to learn about cholesterol, what it is, what your level should be and what you can do about it. WHY IS CHOLESTEROL A PROBLEM?

Cholesterol is a fatty substance that is needed by your body to function and is carried around in the body by two proteins – high density lipoprotein (HDL) and low density lipoprotein (LDL). HDL carries cholesterol away from cells to the liver where it is broken down and so it’s termed the good cholesterol. LDL transports cholesterol from the liver to body cells. Problems arise when levels of LDL are too high; cholesterol builds in your arteries causing blood flow to slow down or stop due to a blockage, which can cause a heart attack or stroke.

KNOW YOUR NUMBERS If you are over 40 you should have your cholesterol levels checked every five years and the healthy levels are:

Combat cholesterol

Most people can name foods we should eat less of such as saturated fat, but do you know the foods you need to eat more of to combat your cholesterol? A healthy diet including 15-25g SOYA per day has been shown to lower cholesterol levels. SWAP cows’ milk and regular yogurts for soy alternatives. Replacing peas for edamame beans (80g) will meet half your recommendation and replacing meat with either soya mince or tofu will provide the other half.

OATS and BARLEY are high in beta glucan – a soluble fibre known to bind to cholesterol in the gut preventing it from being absorbed. Aim to eat at least one to two portions of oats daily. SWAP bran flakes for porridge, digestives for oat cakes or choose flapjacks over doughnuts. OILY FISH such as salmon, mackerel and trout are rich in Omega 3 fatty acids and can form part of a Mediterranean diet. This style of eating has been shown to reduce your risk of high cholesterol. Aim for at least two portions of fish per week, one of which is oil rich (pregnant women should have no more than two portions of oily fish per week). SWAP cheese on toast for sardines on toast or beef for prawns in a stir fry.

VEGETABLE PROTEINS such as nuts, beans, seeds and pulses like chickpeas should be a regular in the diet as they are low in saturated fat and high in soluble fibre. SWAP crisps for unsalted peanuts and include the aforementioned foods more regularly – chickpea curry instead of chicken or simply add lentils to casseroles and stews. You might be more familiar with viewing these as cholesterol lowering food products. PLANT STANOLS and STEROLS have a similar structure to cholesterol and compete for absorption, blocking the absorption of cholesterol. Daily intakes of 1.5-2.4g have been shown to reduce cholesterol by 7-10% over two to three weeks. This can be achieved by using drinks, spreads or yogurts from brands such as Benecol, Flora Pro Activ or supermarket own brands. However, you need to take 1.5g per day regularly to achieve the benefit!

Fight your sugar addiction demons.

C

hristmas is just around the corner so inevitably the race to shed a few pounds is on, but instead of partaking in the latest exercise trend or teatox, just eliminate the one ingredient that has been proven to be the primary factor for weight gain – sugar! We all look to our fave celebs for inspiration, but rather than those who make the front page following their dramatic weightloss, it’s the likes of A-list movie stars such as Eva Longoria and Kate Hudson who we cannot help but envy. Even as they age, they appear to be in better shape than ever and it’s not down to any form of quick fix! Their secret? No refined sugar! Yes, it’s simple but tricky as refined sugar is addictive. Nothing works as effectively as a balanced, healthy diet and regular exercise, but for those who have more than just one sweet tooth, here a couple of weird yet wonderful ways in which you can help satisfy that niggling sugar craving on the go.

14 14 Sugar.indd 14

Take time out with Tetris

If a craving flares up midday when you least expect it, replace your 11am Instagram scroll with a quick game of Tetris. It may sound slightly peculiar but following a shed load of research, it has been proven that thinking and concentrating on other visual imagery is an effective way to curb hedonic hunger.

Stretch it out

Another somewhat unconventional way to curb a craving is by indulging in a quick five-minute yoga session. Particularly good poses to attempt are child’s pose and standing forward bend. So next time you’re sitting at your desk and find yourself tempted to reach for the biscuit tin, take 5-10 minutes and stretch away the sugar craving!

eterborough city centre is continuing to surge with new eateries, cocktail bars and real ale pubs as well as the resurrection of the Broadway Theatre. The social landscape improves all the time and is quite exciting. This month we had the opening of the Lightbox located next to Puzzles Bar on Bridge Street. LIVE LIFE

“By changing nothing, nothing changes” “Decisions determine destiny”

D

o you want to have a happier, more fulfilling life? Most people have a dream or wish they could make lifestyle changes, but perhaps don’t believe it’s possible or know where to begin. Getting started can seem overwhelming, and those that do manage to go it alone, often become demotivated and give up after a short time, which leads to feelings of failure and ‘not being good enough.’ This perception could not be further from the truth; everyone has the capacity to achieve almost anything. Belief that it is possible, and taking action are two of the key factors to change. It doesn’t matter how big or unrealistic your dream might seem right now, we’ll work with you to explore your options and create an action plan that will keep you motivated to keep moving forwards.

Reinvention from Within

In addition, we incorporate NLP techniques to help you overcome fears or negative beliefs and thought patterns that could be holding you back. Our mission is for you to get the results you want! One to one coaching sessions are available in Market Deeping or remotely via Skype. We offer a FREE initial consultation to enable you to decide if coaching is right for you. Discounted introductory rates available for a limited time. Take action today and get the life you want!

An exciting 12 week evening course in personal development, that uses coaching and NLP strategies to provide you with a solid foundation in making life changing decisions and acting on them. Jam packed with content, the topics covered include: • Mindset and breaking through fears • Identifying your ‘why’ and life purpose • Goal Setting and taking action This course promises to be informative, engaging, motivational, inspiring and above all.... fun! MiSight Children’s groundbreaking contact lenses reduce short-sightedness.

S

immons Optometrists in Burley Road, which has a reputation for its involvement in cutting edge contact lenses and children’s eyecare, has been selected to use the MiSight one-day contact lenses, which is the first licensed product with scientific proof that myopia (the professional term for shortsightedness) can be controlled and myopic development slowed. Optometrist James Alexander, who runs the practice with his wife Manjula and a team of optometrists, has been involved in the management of myopia for several years. The MiSight one-day is the first soft contact lens shown to reduce myopia progression in children by 59% on average. These lenses are the first to actively slow it down and as they are daily lenses they are

BODY WELL-BEING

better suited to children’s lifestyles. The team at Simmons has always been pro-active in fitting contact lenses for children, some as young as eight-years-old. Children’s eyesight can change quickly at any age so if myopia is caught and managed in the early stages, it will make a huge difference to their prescriptions later in life. “Not only do contact lenses give children complete freedom they can also have a huge impact on boosting their confidence,” said James. “Parents are often surprised by how easily and quickly their children learn to insert and remove contact lenses and their initial apprehension soon goes.”

Enjoy the many benefits of a Thai massage.

1

Reduces muscle tension and spasms The applied pressing technique in Thai massage pinpoints areas of built-up muscular tension, to release tension so that muscles may be further manipulated and lengthened effectively. Mobilises the joints The use of yoga-style manipulation releases tension in the joints, adding mobility and enhancing the range of movement. Improves blood circulation The rigorous nature of Thai massage and its multifaceted method – incorporating touch, muscular and skeletal manipulation and acupressure – effectively boosts the circulation. Balances and increases energy Thai massage technique works along the energy meridians of the body. In Chinese medicine it is believed physical stimulation of specific areas

of the meridians can help to shift areas of stagnant energy, allowing for a more healthy flow of energy. Treats sciatica, headaches and neck pain Acupressure, joint manipulation and release of energy meridian flows work together to release tension, ease nerve irritation and alleviate pain. Reduces stress Thai massage has been found to reduce stress and enhance a sense of overall well-being.

As well as new brand openings, existing quality retailers Radley London, Weird Fish, Hallmark and Cotton Traders have recently agreed new leases and are investing in new store fit outs. The outlet centre is celebrating 12 consecutive years of growth and receiving planning consent for a £1 million investment into the leisure facilities on the site, including the UK’s largest JCB Young Driver Zone.

s e m ti MOVE WITH THE

Eileen Le Voi of Safe Local Trades reflects on life before the digital age.

Y

ellow Pages helped JR Hartey to find his fly fishing book and gave a step up to the little girl seeking a kiss under the mistletoe, but the bulky local business directory as we know it is coming to end – and from next year onwards it will no longer be published on paper. There was a time when no home would want to be without the Yellow Pages, in case of an emergency flooding or that last-minute delivery of flowers. But after more than half a century – the directory will continue only in an online format, with the final print run next January. I suppose that owner Yell has recognised that this is a sign of the times, and from the view of Safe Local Trades – our business, brand and reputation has largely been built online, born in an age when websites are a virtual shop window. As a consumer-facing business, we – along with many other businesses – realise that making the journey as quickly and as easily as possible for the customer will put a tick firmly in your box. Having a user-friendly website that can be navigated with ease is what people want when

looking for a service. Offering transparent feedback and customer reviews also helps to engage the customer and offer confidence. To have a mobile-friendly, online service is crucial in today’s busy and fast-pace life; whether you want to book an oven cleaner in your lunchbreak, make contact with a plumber while waiting on the platform for your train, or book an appointment with a landscape gardener on the school run. And, of course, along with the website comes the social media element – certainly not around in the days when the young man using Yellow Pages in the TV ad was looking for a French polisher! While there may be an element of nostalgia associated with Yellow Pages, our mobile lives mean we let our fingers do the tapping and swiping rather than the walking!

Make your hallway an inviting space says Rachel Grant.

Present a focal point

Y

ou don’t get a second chance to make a first impression and the same rule applies – your hallway is more often than not the first room a visitor lays eyes on and yet it is frequently the most neglected. Hallways are an important transitional space within our homes, so it has to work perfectly with the rooms that lead off of it. Many are overly cautious with colour and use neutral pale shades that flatten the atmosphere

leaving an unassuming, uninviting bland corridor. POINTS OF INTEREST

Your hallway has to suit the functional purposes of your lifestyle, but that doesn’t mean you have to play it safe. There are plenty of solutions for your storage and other items in the hallway without it looking like a dumping ground. A beautiful console table in a hallway with points of interest such as a statement mirror or a picture can

brighten up the entrance hall and is easy to achieve. Hallways are typically smaller spaces, but you can add a little colour which will offer a warm welcome to your visitors. ADD PERSONALITY

If you want to create a more dramatic environment, select colours that conjure up strong immediate emotional responses – deep and rich shades like aubergines and plums will make an impact. If you’re not confident

Vertical stripes add height enough for an intense colour all over then a strong block of colour on doors will add personality without overwhelming the space. AVOID PRIMARY COLOURS

Hallways, by nature, are typically dark, so brown, green, grey, telephone box red, and any of the primary colours in full hue should be avoided. These are dark and strong colours and will make the hall feel smaller when you want to create a sense of light and space. T: 01778 382762 | November 2017

Hallways normally lack natural light so light reflective colours work a treat to make the space feel bigger and more welcoming. White or light greys are great options, or light patterned wallpaper. INTRODUCE STRIPES

Often hallway space is limited, leaving little room for accessories or other decorative items. Adding wallpaper is an ideal way to add a design feature and personality to the area without taking up

Embrace pattern in large hallways valuable space. Stripes are a classic choice for homes and can be used to create the illusion of space in a hallway. Horizontal stripes will lead the eye upwards and vertical stripes will elongate the area. Gardening jobs before winter.

T

he leaves are falling, as well as the temperatures, and the rain has started to come more often. Yes, winter is definitely on its way. But, that doesn’t mean there aren’t any jobs to be done in your garden in November Autumn is often treated as a time to hack everything back for a big tidy up before winter really sets in. However it’s actually not a good time to prune many trees and shrubs – you are better to do this late in winter, or in early spring. Saying this, there are some plants that should be pruned in the autumn – these include beech, hawthorn and hazel trees, as well as climbing

Gardening idea for this month Late autumn is a great time to move established deciduous shrubs and trees. It’s hard work, but it’s worthwhile. Prepare the new planting site first, so you can replant quickly, provide a support stake if necessary, and water the moved plant thoroughly once it’s in.

and shrub roses. In addition vigorous growers like buddleja, dogwoods and lavatera can be reduced by half to lessen problems of wind rock over the winter. The most important part of autumn pruning is removing dead, diseased, or misplaced branches. Always aim to make a clean cut, either back to a bud on living wood, or back to the stem it’s growing from. After pruning, scatter a few handfuls of bonemeal around the root area of shrubs to stimulate root growth over winter, and mulch with garden compost. As long as the ground is not frozen or waterlogged, keep

w for Plant no soms los spring b planting out pot-grown hardy climbers, shrubs and trees – and, you must remember to water them through the winter. It’s your last chance to plant some tulip bulbs. By planting them this late in the year you’ll have a much better chance of preventing the bulbs from being infected with the fungal disease tulip fire. Just don’t leave it too late – if you can, get them planted right at the start of the month.

Check your fuel

M

ost issues with non-starting walkbehind mowers and ride-ons at the beginning of the season are down to stale fuel. Modern unleaded petrol has a short shelf life and goes stale very quickly. Some inhibitors are available to help slow down the process, but it’s better to add fresh new fuel at the start of the next season. Always refer to your operator’s book or contact your local authorised service dealer.

Clean it first If your mower wasn’t cleaned at the end of season then baked on dead grass underneath your mower or ride-on cutting deck will slowly erode your deck if its metal or aluminium as well as effecting the way your mower is designed to perform. A deck that is covered in a thick crust of last year’s grass will not be able to disperse the cuttings correctly and will clog and not collect as well as it should. Read your operators manual to make sure you follow correct procedures for cleaning your machine as if done incorrectly you may cause damage to the machine or harm to yourself. If in doubt contact your local authorised service dealer.

T: 01778 382762 | November 2017

43 Lawn Care.indd 43

Treat your mower right and it will last for years.

Easy rider Most ride-on lawn mowers use a battery to start the engine, during the season, they hold their charge sufficiently but during the winter months they tend to lose their charge. Most modern ride-on machines are supplied with a trickle charger to plug into the battery to keep it topped up during the winter months.

Go easy

Don’t be tempted to cut too much in one go during the first-cut-of-the-season. It’s better to just take the top off, then gradually over the next few cuts, go a little lower each time until you reach the desired finished height of cut.

Winter service

Book early for your winter service with your local authorised service centre such as Fentons of Bourne Ltd to beat the rush once the grass starts to grow again in the spring.

So by replacing the glass or polycarbonate roof with a Guardian Solid Warm Roof the appearance is improved and you will have a fully insulated soundproofed roof that is exactly what you always wanted.

Mud

Top cleaning tips from Peters’ Cleaners for November

Before washing an item with mud on, allow the mud to dry and brush or hoover off what you can. Once the excess is removed, if the item is washable, soak it in diluted fabric detergent (liquid is better than powder) for an hour, gently rubbing the muddy area at regular intervals to shift the mud. You can then wash it in your machine. You may need to soak and wash again if the mud stain is not fully removed or use a stain remover. Water may damage some fabrics so before treating any mark or stain on your cloths or fabrics check the care label. If in any doubt, seek professional advice. It is not advisable to apply water to dry clean only fabrics as water may shrink, distort and discolour some fabrics.

Get your summer duvets cleaned

Now is the time to swap your light summer duvet for your winter one. Launder your duvet so it will be fresh for summer and reduce the risk of mites and bed bugs. If washing at home ensure you dry it thoroughly as if it is damp it will start smelling. Do not store in a plastic bag as the duvet may ‘sweat’ causing it to smell or go mouldy. Large, silk and wool duvets can be cleaned by a professional cleaner.

Ask Peters’ Cleaners

Q

How can I ensure my white shirts stay white? A White fabrics should be laundered regularly and not allowed to get too dirty. Once dirt is ingrained in fabrics it becomes very hard to remove, although soaking overnight in a diluted detergent and giving collars and cuffs a good scrub can help. Most supermarkets sell ‘whitening’ products many of which contain a bleaching agent so these should be used with care and

50 50 Peters Cleaner.indd 50

not on delicate fabrics. Bleaching fabrics is not recommended as it can turn some cottons pink wor yellow. P symbol it should be If the item has a O professionally dry cleaned as washing could potentially damage the fabric.

Q

My cotton/linen shirts always look creased after ironing. Why? A Washing cotton or linen in very hot water can damage natural fibres and cause the fabric to ‘crack’. This means the fabric has the appearance of being creased and as the fabric is damaged it will not iron out. Applying steam can rather than direct heat can help improve the appearance of the fabric.

NOVEMBER’S ITEM OF THE MONTH We had to take great care cleaning a client’s wedding dress that had belonged to her great grandma. The dress was made of delicate lace and was more than 70 years old.

ith age and the unfortunate event of illness or conditions that can affect our daily routines can come the realisation that we may need some support. This can be a daunting time and can naturally be an apprehensive and anxious period not for just the individual but also for those involved such as families, loved ones and full-time carers. There are many reasons why we may feel the need for support, this could be due to a decline in health, living with a terminal illness, living with dementia, elderly age, reduced mobility or loneliness. The problem many of us will face is that we are unaware of where to start the process of seeking support. Many of us feel that going into a care home may be the only answer. This is often due to feeling as though we may be a burden to our families.

Finding care that suits you ■ ■

Wright Care at Home was recently awarded ‘Good’ overall in its recent first Inspection. With an ‘Outstanding’ awarded for Well-led and has recently had its report published by the ‘Care Quality Commission’ following its first comprehensive inspection of its services.

Nursing care Live in-home care

WHERE DO YOU START? The best starting point is a conversation with your GP, who will be able to refer you to be accessed to what support you may need. In local surgeries, you will often find in the waiting areas,or if you ask at reception, some information on local organisations such as care homes, nursing care, voluntary services and also domiciliary home care providers that can visit you in your home. The internet is also a great resource and if you search for ‘Care providers’ within your postcode area it will bring up all the places available, with the contact number and address with their local website.

FUNDING You often hear that if you have a certain amount of savings you are not entitled to any government help, well your GP can give you more information and then a social worker can access this. You can also contact independent social workers with free obligation who will tell you if you are entitled to this.

CA R E DOMICILIARY CARE OR HOME CARE

TIPS AND ADVICE You can find reliable and professional care via the Care Quality Commission website who regulate and ensure all care services are safe, provide good practice and follow legislation, policies and procedures. This site is: http://www.cqc.org.uk/

This a great source of care should you wish to remain in the comfort of your own home yet feel you don’t need full time care support. Home care providers can support with ■ Personal care ■ Washing and dressing ■ Medication ■ Nutrition ■ Support into the community ■ Shopping ■ Domestic chores ■ Assistance to appointments ■ Companionship support. After making an initial enquiry a manager from the service will come to the home for a meet and greet and to explain the service. An assessment will then be completed to ascertain what you require and the times preferred. Most care providers offer 24/7 care.

Every provider of care must display their inspection result. It’s advisable to read these reports to understand what the organisation is about and to help you choose the right care. If you are looking at a care home it is always a good idea to turn up to look around rather than making an appointment. You will get a real sense of how and what the care looks like, talk to residents, ask to look at testimonials and check events they hold and when they occur. This is residential care that can support personal care like getting washed and dressed; prepare and provide assistance with all meals; and store and assist with medication.

T 01780 489227 W wrightcareathome.com

Would you like to be able to access the community still? Visit the local shops? Go out for the day? Visit a favourite place? Go for a walk? Out for coffee or for a pub lunch? Finish that favourite jigsaw? Enjoy a cup of tea? Or even just have some company in the comfort of your own home?

Companionship Matters As the cold days and dark nights draw in it can be a time where we feel staying indoors is the only option. We can create a care package that is tailored to your needs.

PLAN? T Retain choice and control. he statistics are sobering – one in three of us will need some form of long-term care as we age. Despite this, only 7% of people take any form of advice before they enter into a care situation. Put simply, most people get what they are given. It doesn’t have to be that way, but faced with a raft of care needs assessments, financial assessments and the complexities of the NHS continuing care rules most people opt for the path of least resistance and take the solution that the local

58 58 W&P.indd 58

authority offers. So, what do you do if you want to retain choice and control. Simply, get some good professional advice on your situation. Make Lasting Powers of Attorney so that your family can make decisions on your behalf if you can’t do it yourself. If you are caring for a loved one, make sure that you can speak on their behalf. If not, your local authority can impose solutions on your family. When you face a local authority assessment, get help. It can save you and your family tens of

thousands of pounds. Never rely on the local authority to tell you everything. In the past 12 years we have helped hundreds of families facing up to care. Should you be next? If you have any worries or questions feel free to book a meeting and talk to us. We can tell you what your options are and help you put the right plan in place.

Two vitally important sets of documentation.

ome people are reluctant to make a Will, either because they do not like contemplating their own death or because they think it is something that they can put off until they are older. It is advisable for everyone to make a Will and to review it at least every five years, or if there is a major family change such as a divorce or a remarriage. A Will can also help to avoid care fees, provide for the appointment of a guardian to your young children and, if wished, make sure money is left to charity and friends. It can also ensure your assets pass in the most tax-efficient manner.

LASTING POWER OF ATTORNEY A person’s mental capacity can fluctuate from time to time. Certain medication can affect your physical and mental health and even short-term ailments can mean that decisions can become difficult or impossible. Lasting powers of attorney are legal documents that let you appoint one or more people to help you make decisions or make decisions on your behalf so that your financial and/or welfare affairs are dealt with if you lack the mental capacity to deal with them yourself. WHO PAYS I t is clear that the country is facing a challenging time and there is a great deal of government talk regarding the nation’s finances. There is ever-increasing pressure on local authorities to balance budgets and the ongoing costs of long-term care will remain under the spotlight. Long-term care is a complex, emotional and a highly charged matter as loved ones come to terms with the changed physical or mental capabilities of those they hold dear while at the same time dealing with the financial consequences of someone living in care.

You need to be certain that you are paying what you should, that you are receiving the allowances you are entitled to, that you clearly understand what you are being told by the NHS or the local authority and, importantly, that you are not paying for what you should not. You need to consider your own plan as our experience shows that the most effective planning is often left too late, which typically leads to higher financial costs. So, our message is clear: ■ If you have existing capital and property and wish to plan for the consequences of long-term care, then we can help

If you would like advice on longterm care planning, or further guidance on any financial matter, then please contact our office today to arrange a FREE initial consultation.

■ If you require Lasting Powers of Attorney documents or you are dealing with the Office of Public Guardianship, then we can help ■ If you have been asked to complete assessments for the local authority, then we can help ■ If ‘the cash is running out’ and you need to appeal to the local authority, we can help ■ If you need specialist advice about the local authority/NHS rule books, then we can help

FRENCH Motoring journalist, Tim Barnes-Clay puts the Gallic Renault Koleos through its British paces.

T

he Renault Koleos won’t rock your world, but it’s a decent enough SUV. I got behind the wheel of the flagship trim level – the Signature Nav, which has a generous amount of kit; comprising 19-inch alloy wheels, a sat-nav, a touchscreen and leather-bound seats. The car’s infotainment system, accessed via the touchscreen, is self-explanatory to use and the Renault is practical, offering cubbyholes and four USB slots, for instance. What’s more, the Koleos is endowed with good quality, soft-touch plastics and the hide wrapping the seats and steering wheel is top notch. There is a lower trim version, too. This is named the Dynamique S Nav and it’s furnished with goodies, such as a panoramic sunroof and a rearparking camera. The top-of-the-tree 2.0 dCi 175 AWD X-Tronic Koleos I drove really is the bee’s knees in terms of out-and-out technology and cabin refinement. The layout is well thought out for driver and passengers, and room is more than respectable. The wheelbase is the same as the Nissan X-Trail’s at 2,705mm – and this equates to awesome legroom. Better still, the Koleos’ load area is 29 litres bigger than the Nissan’s – measuring 579 litres. Alas, take a tape-measure to the similar-looking Skoda

68 68 Renault V2.indd 68

Kodiaq and the Czech-made car’s boot is 630 litres. Oh well, you can’t have everything. On the road, the Renault Koleos is well-behaved and easy to like. Zero to 62mph arrives in 9.5 seconds and the top speed is 125mph. The Koleos has 174 horses under its ample bonnet to provide such power, and this helps tug the car along, even with five-up and a fully laden boot. The auto ‘box isn’t bad, even though it’s a continuously variable transmission (CVT). This means it shifts through a constant range of ratios. Alas, CVTs don’t always work as seamlessly as they should, resulting in a rather jerky driving experience. Nevertheless, I’m pleased to report Renault has stuck an advanced CVT into the Koleos that uses technology to copy a sequential ‘box, making the car painless to operate. The Koleos’ ride is super-comfy, with its soft suspension making you all but forget the existence of potholes. But the squidgy springs don’t wreck the handling; if anything, the French SUV comes across as predictable and steady. The Koleos is a car that is roomy and wellappointed. It also flutters the luxury SUV flag for the company. This means it could attract fresh customers to the brand who are looking for a sport utility vehicle with a bit of French flair.

earchlights and antiaircraft guns located at Horsey Toll (just outside Stanground) gave a clue as to what was nearby during World War II. The primary duty of both was to protect the Civilian Repair Depot (CRD) located at a former private landing field at Shortacres Farm (2.5 miles east of Peterborough), belonging to Kenneth Whittome. The airfield was licensed in May 1930. The Horsey Toll airfield was closed on the outbreak of the World War II, later becoming a CRD that repaired aircraft –

Hawker Hurricane Hurricanes and parts of Wellingtons. Remember that RAF Westwood was also close by. It was in 1940 that Lord Beaverbrook, the Minister of Aircraft Production, established an organisation in which a number of manufacturers were seconded to repair and overhaul battle-damaged Hurricanes. The Civilian Repair Organisation (CRO) also overhauled other battle-weary aircraft, which were later sent to training units or to other air forces. One of the companies involved

Horsey Toll airfield and converted the aircraft hangars into factory units where cotton fabric was used on aircraft wings and then doped. Aircraft dope is a plasticised lacquer that is applied to fabric-covered aircraft. It tightens and stiffens fabric stretched over airframes, which renders them airtight and

weatherproof. Typical doping agents include nitrocellulose, cellulose acetate and cellulose acetate butyrate. Liquid dopes are highly flammable – nitrocellulose, for instance, is also known as the explosive propellant guncotton. Dopes often include colouring pigments to facilitate even application and are available in a range of colours. One such worker at Horsey Toll was Kathleen Church who is pictured here with her treasured wing badge and part of a Hurricane wing made into a wooden key. She worked with six other women within one

Horsey Toll workers carrying out salvage and repair work on a wing

Horsey Toll today section of the Civilian Repair Unit. She recalls Mr Wainman as the Manager, and the Foreman being Mr Stonebridge. Horsey Toll CRD would repair aircraft engines, air frames, broken fuselages, tail planes and ailerons. The CRO fixed the most damaged aircraft. Across Britain, in mid-July 1940, it was returning 160-a-week to service and it had put back into service a total of some 4,955 aircraft by December 1940. So, a little-known local factory helped the war effort in a way that is much forgotten today. NEXT ISSUE: A fascinating story of a Peterborian who discovers gold, diamonds and alum in Brazil.

John, 5th Earl of Exeter

BRIAN JONES – LOCAL HISTORIAN

T

he 17th century was drawing to a close and all the communities along the miles of local roads and trackways, and the Welland River itself, were settling into a regular life again. Traders were travelling along the Great North Road, with many stopping to trade with the population of Stamford and other travellers. Celia Fiennes visited the area in the summer of 1697 and records that ‘Stamford town is as fine a built town all of stone as may be seen, it’s on the side of a hill which appease very fine in the approach; several very good Churches with high Spires and Towers very ornamental. It is not very large but much finer than Cambridge, and in its view has several good houses. On the right hand of Stamford is a house of Mr Neal’s in a pretty, neat paled in park. The house not very big but looks well. On the side of the hill over against Stamford and on the left hand over against the town stands my Lord of Exeter’s Burghley House – eminent for its curiosity. The situation is the finest I ever saw. On the edge of the hill and several rows of trees of several acres above it quite to the road, it stands in a very fine park which is full of deer and fine rows of trees.’ Celia leaves with a note in her book: ‘The great variety of the rooms, and the fine works, took me up to two full hours to go from one room to another over the house. It is esteemed the finest house and situation that is in England and will be very

completed when finished.’ Celia’s Lord of Exeter – John Cecil – was a notable Grand Tourist and had filled the house with treasures purchased on his travels through France and Italy. However, the Burghley work of the past 30 or so years was coming to an end. Antonio Verrio had finished his work, (or was it the work that has finished him?) and John, the 5th Earl, having had an audience with Pope Innocent XII, was returning from his fourth journey to Italy. However his returning journey to England ceased on Sunday 29 August 1700 at Issy in Paris when John died on eating ‘a surfeit of fruit’. He would be buried at St Martin’s in Stamford on 20 October 1700. John had accumulated a significant debt and it would be some 60 years before the family at Burghley came to the fore again. However, at this same period of time, just a short way from the declining Burghley, was Uffington, the new estate bought by the Bertie family in 1673 and now expanding. ‘ The house which I am now building “in the afternoon of my age” you must If you’re not call a fine house: interested in more but I hope it will be stories of our local big enough for a history check out younger brother’s www.talkinghistoryblog.com family.’ It would be impressive It will cost you nothing and will throughout the always have some additional coming centuries. stories to go with each month’s Scene story.

PROS CONS C

&

A beginner’s guide to Comic Cons.

omic Cons are big business – but what are they? Comic Cons are a spectacle to behold and, for film and TV fans, they are a Mecca for meeting and conversing with likeminded enthusiasts. Visitors can immerse themselves in the world of film and TV; from traders and guests, to memorabilia and everything in between. These events are a full-on explosion of sounds and colour; energetic and supremely busy. They have a way of bringing together people from all walks of life and from all around the world. BIG AND SMALL

Cons are beginning to appear in almost every major UK town. The large, main Cons of Showmasters and MCM, along with Em-Con, operate out of the major cities, and offer the high-

end actors and actresses from well-known TV shows and films. However, they can be expensive and leave you feeling a little bit lost. This also goes for the more specific Cons, such as Walker Stalker (mainly The Walking Dead actors) and Heroes & Villains (Arrow, Flash etc). It is the smaller, less-publicised Cons that tend to be the best for value for money and have more specialised guests that many people would never usually get to meet. These can be a real joy to be a part of for anyone who is a novice all the way to seasoned Con attendee. There was also a specialist Cons for those with disabilities, Feel the Force Day, which was

held here in Peterborough and was possibly the most humbling experience I have ever had, through doing live Facebook streams and interviews with the celebrity guest as well as mingling with the attendees. DRESSING UP

The major attraction for all Cons are the Cosplayers. Cosplayers take on the persona of a film or TV character, dress up as them, and act out as that character. The skills and intricacies in not only creating the costumes but also the depiction of the character’s persona is enthralling. They really make the Cons enjoyable and are happy to have photos taken with you, as long as you ask first!

The Film & TV Show, hosted by Richard S, is a weekly radio show on Hereward Community Radio, as well as a highly successful Podcast, which you can subscribe to on iTunes. FTVShow @TheFTVShow
