FROM THE EDITOR

It starts right here. Your journey for the right school begins with this very issue you are holding in your hands right now. I know firsthand that school search can be daunting. But I Elizabeth Rivas also know from my Editor-in-Chief own experience that the correct information is crucial in making a confident decision. I also learned that many paths can lead to success. I am almost positive that you will encounter competing interests but take heart because this is a good thing. Listen to your gut but don't forget to also listen to your child. Celebrating 10 years of dedication to our community, Oxbridge Academy marks this milestone with the announcement that they will be adding a middle school. We are excited to see how their committment to quality education propels them into the second decade of shaping future leaders. Congratulations and thank you for your many years of dedication to the inclusive growth of South Florida.

In this issue, we highlight the importance of participation in extracurricular activities. It is through these programs that children learn to explore interests while growing into wellrounded adults. I saw my three girls learn so many valuable lessons through sports and clubs. They are still passionate about some of these activities and it makes me grateful to see them enjoy these things as adults. I strongly believe that through extracurriculars, most children find their real passions and themselves along the way. Some even turn them into careers!

We did our best to highlight some of these signature programs and unique offerings in our featured program profiles. This section is near and dear to me because it is what I always wished I had when trying to choose a school for my girls. As a working mom, I didn't have the time to look at every school and compare the information. If you are a parent considering private education or looking to make a change, I hope this guide makes school search easier and allows you to make the most informed and confident decision for your family.

best strategies to support dyslexic students both in and out of the classroom. As approximately 20% of students have dyslexia, teachers in nearly every educational environment interact with dyslexic students. Teaching strategies for dyslexic students have shown the ability to help those without dyslexia as well. These versatile and beneficial lessons allow teachers to support all the students while also ensuring that dyslexic students receive the instructions they need. With the right kind of support and training, teachers can pinpoint the strengths and challenges of dyslexic individuals, plan lessons that benefit the entire classroom, offer support that builds confidence, and help dyslexic children prepare for success.

Dyslexic Thinking and the Future of Work

or decades, educators, parents, and employers have only thought of dyslexia as a learning challenge that makes it more difficult for children to learn how to read. However, with the evolution in research, teachers and parents understand more than ever about how the dyslexic brain works and how to teach dyslexic students more effectively. There is much more to the value of dyslexic thinking today than was previously recognized. With improved education alongside targeted support can give an array of targeted support to help individuals with dyslexia.

Creativity, initiative, leadership, social skills, critical thinking, emotional intelligence, and analytical thinking are essential skills in the developing workplace. These are skills that many dyslexic individuals inherently carry with them. As these skills are not easily taught or replicated by technology, many companies focus on finding job candidates who are intrinsically strong in these types of crafts. Neurodiverse teams offer a safe space where new ideas can flourish, and innovative thinking leads to success. There is no argument that dyslexia causes challenges for students learning to read and write. However, there is also clear value in dyslexic thinking that makes dyslexic individuals essential in the working world.

More t han a School

Elisabela A. Valls, Ed.D.

CEA shapes boys and girls into strong young men and women who are actively exploring interests, methodically honing talents, and passionately advocating ideas. More than a school, CEA is a transformative experience that transcends the conventional idea of school, tests and textbooks. Conchita Espinosa Academy aims to create a learning environment that works like a microcosm of life, a community where children can bring their full selves and feel a sense of belonging and love, where learning is not siloed, but rather, children learn through living a multitude of life experiences and have the opportunity to try different things and become multidimensional human beings. In addition to the school’s K-8 program, in which all students participate in music, dance, theatre, visual arts, and sports alongside the academic curriculum, CEA offers a wide-ranging after-school life for its students. The athletic program offers competitive and non-competitive sports, as well as cross-training opportunities, for students as young as K4 and through the eighth grade. The athletic program is thoughtfully designed to increase offerings as students mature. The Athletic Department aims to develop and challenge students in a developmentally appropriate way, while trying to instill a sense of confidence, develop each player’s emerging abilities, establish a sense of community, and underline the importance of sportsmanship. CEA is proud to hold several regional and state titles in Cross Country for both elementary and middle school boys and girls, as well as multiple soccer and volleyball championships, among others.

14 l PRIVATE SCHOOLS GUIDE / 2021

The Conservatory of the Arts, which functions within the same campus, offers students from CEA and the community at large the opportunity to continue their education in the Arts through private and group classes in music, dance, theatre, visual arts, and martial arts, under the instruction of professional and renown faculty all under one roof. “Arts and sports, they really make that child kind of stand out a little bit. You see students walking in with their book bag, their lunch box, their guitar, their dance bag. Those people are going to be people that, later on in life, are not going to be overwhelmed.” – Upper School Teacher Not only is it a convenient system for parents, who more often than not find themselves functioning as their children’s chauffeurs, as they drive from one child’s soccer practice to another’s violin lessons or dance class, but having a unified educational program that functions within the same campus does wonders for a child’s sense of pride, belonging, and sense of self. “I think that our children become receptive to everybody, they become open-minded and accepting of other people. They support one another because they realize that yes, I may play the piano and I may be good at math, but my best friend is a great dancer and she’s a great reader. Students learn to see and accept people for who they are, and since we value it all at CEA, not just one aspect of who they are, we value them as a whole, we show them that everything about them is important.” – Lower School Teacher When a child’s teacher or principal has the ability to peek into a piano room, or speak to the coach, or attend a dance or theatre performance in the school theatre, that teacher has gathered an incredible amount of insight about his or her students. When the guitar teacher knows what a child

is working on in social studies and can collaborate with the academic teacher and help that child prepare a piece to present in class, that teacher gives that child an opportunity to shine in a very unique way. When a teacher sees a student completely transform onstage and can access and use that knowledge and that intimacy to bring out the best in a student, to tailor a lesson to the interest or talent of a student, it allows for that child to experience a very curated learning environment that feels personalized, that feels like home.

“I try to go to every after-school activity related to the arts, just to see the work they put into it… And every time I go to a show, I am blown away by how good they are, how professional they are… And the kids always love when you go.” – Upper School Teacher The Conservatory of the Arts extends beyond a traditional after-school class or activity. Students learn to cultivate a passion. They develop a deep respect for their discipline, whether it is dance, music, art, martial arts, or theatre, and have opportunities to collaborate with students who specialize in other areas. Students are held to high standards of both artistry and technique, and are guided by the faculty to become better versions of themselves, as artists and as people.

Three Benefits of Extracurricular Enrichment

Experiences That Matter

Learning is not something that only happens within the four walls of classrooms.

There is a growing argument that some of the most meaningful learning might be happening outside the classroom. This idea does not mean to imply that exceptional learning is not happening in classrooms, nor does it mean to imply that all learning outside of classrooms is meaningful. Kevin Bushweller is the Executive Editor of EdWeek Market Brief, addressed college and workforce readiness in a special report exploring pressing trends in education. " ... there is a growing argument that the most powerful, relevant learning for today’s students is happening when they connect with the rapidly changing world beyond the classroom walls to solve problems, explore ideas, rally for a cause, or learn a new technical skill." Perhaps this is one of the reasons why top universities look at way more than just test scores and perfect grades. Top universities rely on this information to get a better understanding of a student outside the classroom. They want to see proof of tremendous ambition, initiative, and well-rounded individuals with authentic personal narratives. These activities indicate that a child has gone beyond their intended area of study to maximize their passions and make a difference. While extracurricular activities can make a student more competitive, students should choose activities that help make connections and develop necessary skills to create opportunities even after they graduate. Extracurricular activities began in the United States in the 19th century with literacy clubs among the first instance known in schools. Extracurricular activities are defined as academic or non-academic activities that occur under the support of the school but

34 l PRIVATE SCHOOLS GUIDE / 2021

take place outside of regular classroom time and are found in all levels of schools. These activities are not part of the curriculum but rather complement academic teaching. That is why schools emphasize getting involved early and learning new skills. Understanding factors that contribute to student success have always been of great interest to educators. Recent research suggests that children who participate in extracurricular activities have far-reaching benefits that touch on many aspects of child development. These experiences also prepare them for the real world while teaching them to embrace failure. They help explore their passions in an organized structure that revolves around doing something that brings joy and connection.

Ready for Failure Failure is an inevitable speedbump in every road to success. In sports, athletes have to learn to respond well to setbacks and failures to achieve their goals. Participating in competitive activities teaches children to persevere in the face of failure and disappointment. It is hard to override our automatic response to failure but learning to pivot (and doing so quickly) develops a mentally tough attitude that will allow children to reach their potential. Therefore one of the benefits of participating in these activities is the vast opportunities they provide to fail―perhaps one could even say it is one of its unique features. Learning to fail well is one of life's ultimate lessons that we often learn too late―if at all.

Ready for the Real-World Choosing extracurricular activities should serve as an extension of what interests your child, while also preparing them for the real world. For example, a student participating in speech and debate has to build arguments around a particular opinion and then civilly support them or change them. Participation in debate teaches students to research their ideas, support them with evidence, and address claims against them. Debate is unparalleled when it comes to building skills required of thoughtful global citizens. Participating in debate improves critical thinking. It requires the ability to conduct research, assess sources, and encourages the ability to communicate civilly. It also builds on the ability to connect with others through collaboration. Another activity with a long-lasting impact is student government or student council. While it may not necessarily lead to a political career, participating in student government provides a window into how our democratic republic works. It teaches students about voting on important issues and the right and wrong way to fight for causes. Student government also cultivates skills that will be useful in the workforce, such as working with those you disagree with for the interest of the greater good.

Ready for FUN! Perhaps the most overlooked benefit of participating in extracurricular activities is that it is good, healthy fun! These interactive activities provide children the opportunity to explore their passions without the pressure of tests or grades. We know that experiences such as playing, laughing, singing, and dancing trigger a flood of chemicals that produce good feelings in a child's brain. Having fun produces those pain-killing, feel-good chemicals that reduce stress, increase creativity, improve memory, and even lead to better sleep. Fun is important work! And this important work is best facilitated and fostered through participation in extracurricular activities. Understanding the benefits of extracurricular activities can help students identify which activities to participate in to support their academic and personal development. They will influence the path for college and career choice and prepare your child for the future. "All work and no play doesn't just make Jill and Jack dull, it kills the potential of discovery, mastery, and openness to change and flexibility and it hinders innovation and invention."

FAMILIES RELOCATING TO FLORIDA ARE

DISCOVERING OXBRIDGE A

s families continue to relocate to Florida from the Northeast and points west, a primary concern is finding the right school for their children. With its foundation of a culture of kindness and respect, a hands-on approach to learning, an individualized teaching philosophy, and the addition of seventh and eighth grades, more than 30 families from a dozen states have enrolled their children in Oxbridge Academy in West Palm Beach for the 2021-2022 school year. One of the new Oxbridge ThunderWolves is freshman Koury Dowd, whose family relocated from New Jersey. While looking for a high school for Koury, a lacrosse player and the youngest of their four children, parents Jennifer and Matt Dowd heard only rave reviews about everything from Oxbridge’s culture of kindness to the food. “We wanted a school that felt like family, offered interesting, atypical classes such as aviation and Chinese, and had a strong lacrosse program,” says Koury’s father, Matt. “Oxbridge made our move one of the best aspects of the move.” Relatively new at only a decade old, Oxbridge is an institution that is expanding in response to demand. This year, in conjunction with entering its second decade, the school added seventh and eighth grades, enabling students to benefit earlier from its world-class curriculum and culture of kindness. The school’s 10-year milestone coincided with other important factors: More families were moving into the area and there was in increased demand for private school education. The timing was right, but so is the mission. “Adding middle school grades means preparing students at a younger age to be world citizens and future leaders who are caring, confident, compassionate, critical thinkers,” explains Oxbridge Head of School Ralph Maurer. “It gives younger students from all walks of life the opportunity to benefit from a culture that nurtures and instills values such as integrity, honesty, respect, and gratitude.” Oxbridge has expanded and upgraded in several other ways. A more user-friendly

admission and advancement office has been constructed. The new design and location will provide prospective families with a more streamlined process to visit and apply. A new merit scholarship program ensures that exemplary, qualified students have the resources to enroll. The football program and cheerleading squad, both dormant for several years, are also being reinstituted. Businessman and philanthropist William I. Koch founded Oxbridge in 2011 with the goal of providing an excellent education to any student who wanted it, no matter their financial constraints. That’s why more than 40 percent of the student body benefits from financial aid. He wanted learning to occur in an environment where social class and cliques were irrelevant and where the traits that really mattered were compassion and cooperation. Koch also envisioned a school that featured the best teachers and state-of the-art learning technology and emphasized hands-on, experiential instruction over note taking and memorization. Academically, Oxbridge can boast a faculty, of which 70 percent have advanced degrees, including 19 percent with doctorates. Oxbridge is also proud of its unique, signature programs: Artificial intelligence, Aviation, Cambridge (England) Scholars, and Independent Research. The school’s Model United Nations and debate teams and its theater students consistently bring home awards and trophies. The number of extra-curricular options grows as students are encouraged to bring to the administration new ideas for clubs. Oxbridge also emphasizes community service, which includes tutoring students, clothing and toy drives, and beach cleanups. Oxbridge is proud of its 35 athletic teams that compete in sailing, equestrian, and girls flag football, as well as basketball, volleyball, soccer, and lacrosse, among others. During the past decade, many Oxbridge student-athletes have received scholarships to play for college teams, including Division I schools. It’s your turn to discover Oxbridge.

Oxbridge Academy kicks off its Football program starting in Fall 2022.

An Oxbridge education goes beyond the classroom by encouraging all students to participate in athletics and offering a well-rounded program that is an integral part of the Oxbridge experience. Register for an Admission event to learn more at oapb.org/visit.
