minds, engaging hearts, and empowering leaders. Since its establishment in 1982, Spanish River Christian School has offered our community an education based on biblical principles that focuses on the areas of spiritual, academic, emotional, social, and physical development. Today, this milestone is a testament to the dedication and prayers provided by its teachers and school community.
One such program is Miami-Dade’s oldest, continuously-operating private school renowned for its celebration of diversity, idealism, innovation, and vision. For almost a century, The Cushman School has evolved its programming to ensure that students reach their full potential as innovators of change. This year they launched a new online division to meet the needs of today's global students in a more personalized way. Cushman Virtual offers the same world-class Cushman education with a flexible, remote learning opportunity that is self-driven and independent as well as community and globally focused. We celebrate this launch with them and are proud of all that they do in our local community -and now globally!
We are so inspired by the resilience and innovations of all of the programs you will find in this issue. They have made us reflect and challenged us to think about new ways that we can support your family! In this issue, you will see a new section called Growth + Development. We know that education is the vital foundation but we also know that learning and growth don't only happen in classrooms. With the goal of supporting your family's growth and development, we are introducing a directory of programs and services that we know will be beneficial to your family's wellbeing. This invaluable resource will feature programs that offer enrichment classes, after-school programming, tutoring, test prep, therapy and rehabilitation, educational consultants, museums and cultural centers, and so much more! Because we are in the early stages of launching this guide, we are eager to hear from you! We value your feedback, even more so, your criticism if it helps us make positive changes.
We also want to congratulate Spanish River Christian School as it celebrates 40 years of enriching
We wish you all a rewarding new school year, from all of us at Private Schools Guide of South Florida.

iami-Dade’s oldest, continuously-operating, private school continues to meet the demands of today’s students while remaining rooted to its near-century-old traditions and character-first approach to education. “We consistently evolve to find innovative ways to engage, teach and inspire our students… We’ve seen an increased desire for personalization and flexibility to accommodate our students and their families. This demand has driven us to offer the Cushman Experience beyond our campus boundaries,” explains Dr. Ar vi Balseiro - third Head of School in 98 years. Cushman’s main and high school campuses are located in historic MIMO Miami on Biscayne Blvd., and educate a diverse, international student population of approximately 8 0 . The launch of Cushman Vi rtual means that more students from anywhere can now benefit from The Cushman School’s education and hallmark learning environment. Established in 1924, Cushman is known for its intentional culture defined by strength of character, kindness and inclusivity, a positive self-aware attitude and its legacy of fostering students as “innovators of change.” This mindset and robust social programming also differentiate the school’s newest division, Cushman Vi rtual, and complement its dynamic offering of small-sized, online classes taught by leading educators. A team of counselors is also available to ensure the academic and social-emotional success of its tight-knit community of learners. - MF

Learning & Literacy Series
Early Literacy and Foundational Skills "Literacy is the jump-off point from which all of life's successes take flight."
- Lauri Fortino
In its simplest definition, literacy is best described as fluency in reading and writing. It is fundamental to mastering any subject in school but the demands of the 21st century require literacies beyond written language. Literacy has evolved from just a means of reading words into a tool for creating innovative spaces. Informational literacy, social literacy, multicultural literacy, digital literacy, and financial literacy are all parts of today's modern definition of literacy. As communication globally has become more accessible, these are the skills all students must begin to learn and practice to best prepare for the future. This ability to participate more fully through access, comprehension, and communication will enable students to better understand themselves, their environments, and their role in society. Early Literacy and foundational skills Learning to read and write starts well before preschool. It starts with the early development of skills through literacy-rich experiences such as learning how to hold a book, tell

stories, and sing songs. To develop literacy skills, children need to start with strong language skills- phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. These language skills lay the foundation for literacy skills required to listen, speak, read, and write. Listening is a core skill that allows children to detect and discriminate between different sounds by drawing on three separate processes-- the sense of hearing, reacting to noise, and attending to sounds. Whereas speaking is the action of conveying information or expressing one's thoughts and feelings in spoken language through vocal variety including projection, enunciation, pronunciation, and pace. Children verbally communicate what they hear and understand through speech. Often referred to as oral language, listening and speaking are considered the most developmentally foundational skills. Through oral language, children learn a variety of skills critical to reading and writing, both of which are needed for further stages of literacy development.
Reading and Writing Development As children grow older, they demonstrate key stages of literacy development, such as alphabetic fluency, that aid in reading and writing. Reading starts with phonemic awareness, the awareness of sounds that make up words, and recognizing the arrangement of letters to make these words. The decoding then begins by working out the relationship between letters and sounds and breaking them down by these varying sounds (consonants and vowels) to say a written word. Finally, reading comprehension is understanding the meaning of words being read and being able to make inferences from text. This communication skill strengthens an active and passive vocabulary--a building block of literacy and learning. Children move through the stages of attention development at varying rates, so it is important to plan activities that encourage the next stage.
Six ways to encourage fluent transcription skills. 1.
Encourage sustained and regular practice. Practice makes permanent.
2.
Provide specific and clear feedback. Focus on the how.
3.
Point out improvements from previous work to encourage and support further effort.
4.
Make praise meaningful by using it sparingly, honestly, and specifically to acknowledge effort, strategy, and mastery.
5.
Provide specific guidance instead of rescuing them. Help them embrace mistakes as opportunities to learn.
6.
Teach spelling strategies such as phonemic awareness, prefixes, suffixes, root words, chunking, rhyming, and rulebased strategies.
Five stages of development while learning to read: 1.
The emerging pre-reader (6 months to 6 years old) plays with books and gains the ability to name letters.
2.
The beginner reader (6 to 7 years old) is learning initial reading, writing, and decoding.
3.
The decoding reader (7 - 9 years old) can read with increasing fluency in this learning-to-read phase.
4.
The fluent, comprehending reader (9 - 15 years old) has entered the reading-to-learn phase through specific comprehension strategies
5.
The expert reader (16 years and older) is synthesizing information and applying multiple perspectives required to access, retain, critique, and apply knowledge and concepts.
If reading is knowledge, writing is power. Writing is a form of communication where letters or characters help articulate ideas, words, and symbols. In the same way that reading literacy involves several skills, writing requires skills like spelling, grammar and punctuation, vocabulary, and comprehension. The ability to clearly communicate ideas through writing happens through transcription (spelling and handwriting) and composition (articulating ideas and writing them down). Writing is a physical task as well as an intellectual one. It
FEATURE
begins with accurate letter formation which leads to fluency. When children are fluent in their handwriting, they're able to concentrate on the writing composition rather than the mechanics of the process. Writing is a tool for agency and influence through self-expression. It is through writing that language becomes visible. Developing these skills is crucial to children's success as research confirms that early literacy positively impacts academic achievement, life-long learning, and overall success. However, there is an emphasis on a developmental approach to literacy because it is sensitive to the variated and long journey of acquiring and developing these rich skills.
A Foundation for Future Skills Every aspect of life has been affected by the 21st century's technological advancements in information sharing through media. The bar for students today is no longer set at just completing high school as it is no longer just about consuming and regurgitating information. Graduates today must be equipped with learning skills, literacy skills, and life skills to prepare for college and a career. They must be able to process and analyze large amounts of information to express informed views. They must know how to apply facts and ideas to think critically and creatively. They must use interpersonal skills and communication to connect and collaborate with others. They must understand how information is produced and distributed to use technology effectively and purposefully. They must understand and apply financial skills to manage money effectively. They must be life-ready. Therefore, information literacy, digital literacy, financial literacy, and cultural literacy have become increasingly valuable skills to possess. The knowledge and application of these skills will have a profound impact on people as they have the power to connect us. ▪

The Educational Experience
Experiential Learning E
32
xtending the learning experience beyond the traditional classroom allows for learning through instruction or study outside of four walls. In the spring issue, we investigated how the role of education has a history of changing with the needs of society. Those needs led to summer sessions, which paved the way for summer camps and enrichment programs. In this issue, we look at experiential learning, or learning by doing. Learning outside of the classroom walls is beneficial in bridging the gap between what is learned in a textbook and real-world experience.
According to Vanderbilt’s “Teaching Outside the Classroom” guide, benefits of experiential learning include:
There are four widely known learning styles for students: Visual, Auditory, Reading/Writing, and Kinesthetic (learning by doing). The first three styles tend to take place in the classroom. Since each student is different, the best way to guarantee a wellrounded education is to incorporate each type of learning style.
5. Inspired students to continue in a field (for University students)
| PRI VATE SCHOOLS GUIDE / 2022
1. Enhanced learning, fostering personal and social development 2. Increased levels of motivation 3. Higher recall levels of the material 4. Improved academic performance in the class
These lessons, outside the traditional learning environment and in scenarios that create authentic learning experiences, connect students with
communities and practices that allow them to acquire a broad range of knowledge and a thorough understanding of different subjects. There is no doubt that experiential learning helps keep students engaged.
Through education-based travel, students can see the bigger picture-- how what they learn in the classroom relates to real life and why it is important.
Field Trips/Field-based learning
School Gardens / Garden-based Learning
Field trips are perhaps one of the best examples of experiential learning. Some students will absorb information in a traditional classroom setting through lectures, course readings, and homework assignments. Others will have difficulty and not understand it at all. Once a student loses interest, they will simply stop paying attention. Field trips provide an immersive experience to reinforce what they’re learning in the classroom. When children are presented with information in a way that engages their interests and involves some kind of interaction, they are more likely to retain it.
School gardens are hands-down (literally in some dirt) my favorite approach to experiential learning. School gardens are living laboraties that give students of all ages a real-time appreciation of how food is grown. From planting to harvesting and preparing, there are so many long-lasting lessons (and benefits!) to having a school garden.
2. Better information retention
Gardens can serve as living laboratories in which students see and experience firsthand what they are learning and, in turn, apply that knowledge to realworld situations. When students engage in hands-on gardening lessons, they will likely show an increase in interest and engagement of learning material. That is, when students are able to take part in a project that has a clear beginning and end, like watching a seedling become a tomato, it can deepen their sense of purpose and provide an intrinsically motivating reward.
3. Deeper engagement and renewed sense of learning
Long-lasting benefits of school gardens:
Five ways field trips enhance your child's education: 1. Encourages academic growth
4. Fosters social and cultural awareness 5. Student-led learning that is driven by interest, not just curriculum Field trips are exciting experiences that allow students to explore, investigate, and discover.
Studying Abroad/Education-based Travel Traveling is an immersive experience that can expand your worldview. Studying and traveling abroad provides students with both education and opportunity, making the world their literal classroom. Five ways studying abroad enhances active learning: 1. Language Learning through participation 2. Cultural Immersion through connection 3. Open and global-minded viewpoints through appreciation of differences
1. Provides an outdoor respite and fosters exploration 2. Critical role in shifting perceptions of food 3. Develops analytical abilities and promotes STEM 4. Positively correlated with a reduction in depression, stress, and anxiety 5. Builds confidence by helping them feel capable and competent It is natural to focus on science in the classroom garden, but it can also serve as a springboard for experiential learning of mathematics, history, language arts, visual and performing arts, and health education. If experience is indeed the the best teacher, then real world experience might be the most successful learning method for all learning types. Experiences stimulate, provoke and engage children through diversity, curiosity, and creativity to learn better−and learning is the whole point of education.
4. Greater career opportunities through new relationships 5. Personal development through independent thinking 2022 / PRI VATE SCHOOLS GUIDE

GROWTH + DEVELOPMENT
Growth O Development Welcome!
If you haven't heard about our newest section, you've come to the right place! We are expanding our guide to include a directory of programs and services that directly support families in the growth and development of their children. Our goal is to help you build a support team to meet every area of your family's needs. Here is how that support team might look! This looks like a school community that provides quality education on a personalized level with a whole-child approach. This looks like an after-school enrichment program that helps a child explore interests and encourages risk-taking and independence. This looks like training programs or skill-specific classes that help develop and hone your child’s talents and skills. This looks like a tutoring or test prep center that helps your child become an independent learner by teaching them notetaking skills, study habits, and test-prep strategies. This looks like a therapist or counselor that offers support with communication or developmental concerns. This looks like a parenting coach that uses play to teach your family coping methods for big and new emotions. This looks like a pediatric dental office that gives you something to smile about by encouraging good dental hygeine at an early age. This looks like a zoo, garden, or museum that offers family activities for those days where you want to grow closer and learn together! This looks like any program, service, and center that supports your family's wellbeing and we are so excited to put this directory together to help you find just that!

Talking About Tragedy
I
n an ideal world, parents would be able to shield their children from all the negative news that constantly bombards them. But our world is far from ideal. Shielding
our children is challenging because not only does news travels faster than ever, but the line between truth, satire, and fake news is so blurred. Childhood should be a carefree time but it can also be riddled with stress, especially when kids are constantly exposed to news of crime, violence, and tragedy. Stress is the body’s reaction to situations that occur within and outside the body. Stress can be helpful and has been hard-wired into our human physiology for survival. The body’s stress “fight-orflight” response is beneficial to help you survive a potentially life-threatening encounter by pumping adrenaline and cortisol into your bloodstream to help you fight harder. However, stress can go
44
| PRI VATE SCHOOLS GUIDE / 2022
from being helpful and life-saving to harmful and life-damaging. We know that childhood is an especially sensitive period of development for their brains and bodies. Children are particularly sensitive to repeated stress activation which is why exposure to distressing news can be traumatic and hurt their overall well-being. These tips will help prepare you to have hard and honest conversations with your children.
Process
This is the most important step of this process and it requires that you, as the adult, set the tone. Heavy news triggers emotions that need to be processed. You have to take note of your feelings before diving into heavy conversations with your kids. Why? Because children are extremely sensitive and attuned beings. They will pay attention to your tone, pace of speech, and body language for guidance. Their sense of safety comes from you. They are going to
look at you to make sure that you are calm, that routines are still happening, and most importantly, that boundaries are still being held. Your actions and your attitude are way more important than any actual words you say and that requires that you sit down with your emotions first.
Pause
Once you process your feelings, take a moment to consider your child's age and developmental stage. Some kids may mature faster than others, and some kids may be more resilient, but consider the fact that their brains are still developing. Brain development continues well into our 20s! We know through thorough research that trauma and stress can also overload and permanently affect a child’s developing system. This "pause" is not only to consider their age but also to think about what is happening in their bodies (i.e. hormonal changes) and what is currently going on in their lives. If your child has been under a lot of stress at school, it may not be an appropriate time to go into a deep discussion about school shootings. Young kids also have trouble deciphering real vs. fake so in some cases, even if the information is age appropriate, holding off is best.
Prepare
This is the point where you anticipate how you will respond to tears, fear, and maybe even anger. Although it is hard to anticipate what children will ask, it is a good idea to be prepared to both ask and answer some hard questions. Ask them how the news of whatever you just shared makes them feel. Validate those feelings even if they seem illogical to you. Reassure them that it is ok to feel sadness and grief, and remind them that there is so much good in this world too. Fred Rogers shared that when he saw tragic things on the news, his mother would say to him, “Look for the helpers.” Ask them if they can name some good people and the good deeds that they do? Ask them how they might be able to do something good for someone. Answer questions slowly. It’s ok to acknowledge the gravity of their questions out loud. Answer slowly, “let me think about that.” Use your regular voice and unless they first verbalize that they don't feel safe, try to avoid emphasizing “you're safe” because that raises the question
“wait, was I not safe"? One of the biggest concerns most kids face when learning about the news is how it will impact them. Stating the implications and context can help ease their stress. For example, if your child hears about an impending snowstorm and gets worried, you can explain that this is happening in another part of the country and that it will not directly impact him. When there are instances that do have a direct impact on them (like when everyone had to stay home because of COVID-19), frame it in a way that is realistic yet optimistic. “For the health of everyone, we will need to stay home. I know you will miss your friends, but this is temporary. We can bond as a family and work on puzzles together if you’d like.” Be prepared to give your kids extra comfort and attention. It is normal for kids to display regressive behaviors (bed-wetting, trouble sleeping, being clingy, lack of trust, intense fears, tantrums) when they are feeling anxious so making the extra effort to be their physical and emotional shoulder to lean on is vital. Teens are more likely to minimize and downplay their emotional distress as a way to not be a "burden". Encourage them to talk but don't pressure them. You may also need to educate yourself on how best to support your teen. Accept that grief can trigger many unexpected emotions and learn to recognize the difference between grief and depression. This is also another opportunity to check in with your own emotions. Be aware of how you are reacting because kids will feed off of your emotions.
Protect
This is, perhaps, the most complex part of the process. You don’t want them to hear a version of tragedy from any voice other than your own first, but the reality is that they will talk to peers (maybe even other adults) and see things online before you even get a chance to talk to them. Protecting them starts with honesty. The most common temptation among parents is to lie, but lies eventually thin out and expose the truth, leaving a cloud of mistrust that never really settles. Kids don’t need you to paint a detailed picture
"When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, 'Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping. " - Fred Rogers 2022 / PRI VATE SCHOOLS GUIDE

for them but they do need honesty and truth. Tell the truth to the extent of the knowledge you have and explain that you may not have all the answers. Answer in context to their age, which means using the correct language and pace. The goal isn’t to eliminate their negative feelings or to calm their fears, the goal is to acknowledge and address them. Warn them that they may hear a version of the truth that can be scary and encourage them to talk to you about it if they do. Leave the door open for conversation and honestly share your own feelings. Another way to protect them is allowing them to categorize the news you've shared. News is simply information we have that can be many things at once. It will be experienced differently for each of us, so what might feel like exciting, good news to you might evoke different feelings for someone else. The point is that you are better off not qualifying it as good or bad news for your child, simply say you have news. Qualifying information you have to share can make your child doubt that how they are interpreting what you've shared is incorrect.
46
| PRI VATE SCHOOLS GUIDE / 2022
Lastly, a proactive approach to processing news is a great way to protect your child. Teach them about misinformation, disinformation, and how to use credible sources. Although some news travels by word of mouth or social media, it is best to teach your kids to use credible sources to validate any news they encounter. Common Sense has a great free resource that helps kids decipher fake news vs. real news. They focus on two main points: 1. Analyze the source - by Googling the author of an article to ensure there is no bias and 2. Corroborating (or validating) the news by looking for multiple sources. Look out for sources like Wikipedia that should be used with caution, as their pages can be edited by anyone for free. Teach them to avoid articles or news that are opinion-based, using words like “think” or “feel” or “I heard”. Steering away from assumptions can help alleviate anxiety, as assumptions of what is to come in a news story are usually blown out of proportion, mostly written as clickbait.

Parent The word parent is also a verb. In this context, we will say that it means taking action. Cultivate open space for restorative play: if your child has been exposed to some stressful news, their play, attitude, and demeanor may change. They need you to slow things down and bring your full attention back to them. What better way to do this than to make time for play−play is always therapeutic. You may also want to resist the urge to schedule a lot of things. Your child, in the wake of stress or conflict, is going to need less going on. It is in the busyness that they don’t get a chance to process all their feelings. Allowing for some boredom or play can be restorative. Taking action can also look like finding ways to do something to help your child feel connected to their community, locally and globally. For example, letter writing can 48
| PRI VATE SCHOOLS GUIDE / 2022
be therapeutic for the writer as well as the recipient. Another intentional way to feel connected during misfortune is by taking up a cause. Purposefully creating goodness from suffering helps children deal with tragedy and derive some meaning from it. The reality is that everyday, life ends tragically or brutally for many people around the world. Just bearing witness and showing that we care in times of tragedy or suffering is extremely meaningful−especially when we feel powerless. Although discussing tragic events (such as school shootings and war) is extremely challenging, being honest with yourself and your child will encourage open communication. Whatever steps you decide to take, encourage your kids to ask questions and come to you for clarification on confusing news. Aim to listen to their concerns, and address their questions calmly. Remember that kids are forming their views of our world so it is important to intentionally share positive news happening in our world, too. Remind them to "look for the helpers". ▪
