STUDY ROOMS ARE BACK!
Our Study Rooms (previously called “Discussion Rooms”) are open for business at all three Library locations, with protocols in place to keep everyone as healthy and safe as possible. We welcome you to use them, even if you are not a Schaumburg Library cardholder. Please keep in mind that only one person at a time may use a Study Room. We know family and friends like to work together, but for now, this rule will remain in place until further notice. Masks are required in Study Rooms and throughout the Library. Reservations are encouraged, but walk-ins will be accommodated based on availability. To make a reservation, complete the form at SchaumburgLibrary.org or call (847) 923-3347. Please note: there is a two-hour limit and only one reservation per day, per person, is allowed. Teen Study Rooms, for teens only, will be open Monday through Thursday from 2-8 p.m.; Fridays from 2-5 p.m.; Saturdays from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.; and Sundays from noon to 5 p.m. These cannot be booked online. Study Rooms will be cleaned by staff and have an air purifier, and disinfectant wipes will be available for those who want to also wipe down the surfaces themselves.
ALL AGES FEATURING... OUR SEED LIBRARY
Grow flowers, herbs, veggies and more by visiting our free Seed Library this spring! Come to any of our three locations beginning Thursday, April 1 to get up to three packets of seeds. You can even come multiple times! No library card required, but seeds must be picked up in person and cannot be placed on hold. The Seed Library will provide packets on a first-come, first-served basis until supplies run out. Imagine planting your tiny seeds in April and having your own fresh vegetables a few months later to eat as is, in salads, or cooked in soups and stews. Or…seeing your flower seeds blossom, adding color and beauty to your yard. Perhaps they’ll even attract hummingbirds or butterflies! Whether you’re a novice or seasoned gardener, a few planting tips always come in handy. Here are some from Better Homes and Gardens:
seed library • Know your USDA Hardiness Zone. Use it as a guide so you don’t plant trees, shrubs, and perennials that won’t survive winters in your area. • Prune spring-flowering shrubs, such as lilacs and large-flower climbing roses, immediately after the blooms fade so you don’t remove next spring’s buds.
• Grow vegetables in a location that gets at least 8 hours of direct sunlight every day. If you have some shade, try growing cool-season crops: lettuce, spinach, radishes. To get your seeds, simply stop by any of our three locations during Library hours. Please Note: Due to Covid-19 restrictions, we cannot accept any donated seeds.
• Perennials generally need three years after you plant them to achieve their mature size. • Deadheading is a good practice for perennials and annuals. Removing spent flowers encourages plants to use their energy to grow stronger leaves and roots.
