INTRODUCING WORKSHOP Have you checked out Workshop? This glass-walled, flexible programming room, located just off the lobby in The Commons (audiovisual area), was created specifically for creative programs and performances, including crafts, robotics, movie showings and much more. In addition to scheduled programs led by a presenter or instructor, Workshop will also be open for drop-in programs designed for a wide variety of interests. Over the next few months, these drop-in opportunities will include DIY comic panels, puppet making, blackout poetry, seed bombs, kite-making, coloring and much more.

On April 1, the same day as our Prom Formal Wear Giveaway, we’ll have Nail Art in Workshop, so prom-goers and others can learn to creatively design their nails with expert guidance. During our May 20 Environmental Fair, Workshop will house a special earth-friendly drop-in event, in addition to all the displays, programs and interactive

SOLVING THE MYSTERY “Can you help identify this photo?” Reference Librarian Jane Rozek posted the question on the library’s local history blog, suspecting the 1981 aerial photo to be a mall, but unsure of which one or its exact location. A note on the back simply listed the date and words “Once upon a time.” Two blog readers saw the post and came to the rescue. Matt Walsh of Carol Stream and another reader identified the photo as Stratford Square Mall, under construction. A former Schaumburg resident, Matt said, “I’ve always enjoyed reading this (local history) blog, especially when Jane explains the process she went through when trying to identify old photos or businesses. I look at every post, and find them pretty interesting.” Jane was impressed with the way Matt compared the library’s photo with a Google satellite image. “He boxed things out and drew lines, all the while making connections between the two photos.” Matt said he had fun researching the photo. “I work in engineering, so a lot of

what I do is problem solving. I looked at the photo and everything around the structure, then looked at Google maps and just used the tools I had available.” With Matt’s involvement, Jane was able to make the identification. To follow up, she contacted the Bloomingdale Public Library for additional assistance, which was graciously provided by librarians Leslie Drewitz, Maretta Britt and Abby Budznynski. They sent a photo noting the locations of future stores and entrances at the mall, the farm in the background and future streets and roads. “People love being part of the detective process,” Jane said. “When I need help with a photo or a fact or a date, it’s nice to be able to turn to the collective brain of the blog’s readers. A JOB WELL DONE This May, we will say a heartfelt thank you and goodbye to two retiring Library Board trustees. Robert Frankel joined the Board in 1977 and graced the library with his management and financial expertise. He simultaneously served as president of the North Suburban Library System and was a delegate to the 1990 White House Conference on Libraries and Information Services. Ruth Jonen became a trustee in 1985 while working as Director of Food Services for High School District 211. She was also a founding member of the American Association of University Women. Ruth’s dedication to the community and passion for promoting literacy led her to leadership positions in District 54’s Community Advisory Committee, Prince of Peace Lutheran Church and the School Nutrition Association. Both played integral roles in the growth of the library, including building the Central Library in Schaumburg’s Town Square, as well as two branch libraries in Hanover Park and Hoffman Estates. “The Schaumburg Township District Library has been so fortunate to have two such dedicated, thoughtful, and long-serving board members as Trustee Frankel and Trustee Jonen” said the Library’s Executive Director Monica Harris. “We are grateful for their years of guidance and service to the community.”
