SEEDS OF KINDNESS SEED LIBRARY We are excited to announce the launch of a seed library at the Schaumburg Township District Library. You will find a variety of seeds in our library, from flowers to herbs. The seed library will be available anytime that the Library is open, and you do not need a library card to check out seeds. As your gardening skills grow, you can bring back saved seeds that can be planted next season. Don’t worry if you can’t bring any back at first; you won’t be penalized. Through this project we hope to foster a sense of sharing and sustainability within our community. Please invite your friends and neighbors to participate, as the more seeds we receive, the more self-sustaining the seed library becomes. If you would like to make a seed donation, please contact Stephanie Driscoll at sdriscoll@ stdl.org or (847) 923-3395.

ADULT PROGRAMS
“Once again, Thank You for a wonderful week of library programs. I came three nights in a row and each program was excellent and so different.” - Camille S., Roselle
Got Questions? Just Ask! From bus routes to volunteer options to local history, our library staff can help you find the information you seek. “We love to help people with research for school or work, genealogy, topics of personal interest, and anything book-related, of course,” said Reference Librarian Jane Rozek, who said she was recently contacted by a student from Whitney Young Magnet School in Chicago. “He was looking for information on Motorola for a project he’s doing for the Chicago Metro History Fair. We have years of Motorola’s annual reports, so that was a big help to him.” When another patron asked about historic stock quotes for reporting capital gains on his income tax form, Jane had just what he needed, too. She said many library visitors will turn to old newspapers, another popular research tool, for historical information. “Our collection goes back to when many of the newspapers first started publishing,” she said, adding patrons use them to look up obituaries, crimes, or a family incident that made the news.
Maybe you need a place to meet, instead of information. If that’s the case, staff at the Information Desk on the library’s second floor are ready to lend a hand. Information Desk Assistant Pat Heinen says “people are sometimes surprised to learn they can book their own meeting rooms online.” But if you prefer a personal touch, stop at the desk and ask. Staff are happy to book rooms for non-profit groups, including Scouts, homeowner association boards, knitters, writers, robotics groups and more. Anyone with an Schaumburg Library card in good standing is welcome to book a room. What can you find in our Computer Assistance area? Computers, of course, along with scanners and printers, but there are some lesser known gems as well. “We’ve got some resources that people don’t realize they can use,” said Computer Assistance Coordinator Ed Moy. “Phone chargers are one. We keep those at the desk. Another is cassette and vinyl converters. People can come to the CA Desk and we’ll be happy to show them how to use the equipment to convert cassettes and vinyl to MP3.”

On the Library’s first floor, kidsZone is a popular place to read, see puppet shows, come to storytimes, and play on the computers. But parents might be interested in knowing there are other valuable resources in kidsZone. “Parents sometimes ask about daycare options in the area and it’s great that we can hand them our Preschool/ Daycare Directory,” said kidsZone Desk Assistant Nicole Martinez. “People love it because finding child care can be challenging, and this directory is updated every year, so all the information is current. We also get questions about fun places for kids that are free or inexpensive. Of course, that’s in addition to all the book-related questions, which our librarians are always ready to answer.” Got a question? Need research materials you haven’t been able to find? Looking for a database, an old community photo, insight on a business or instructions for an old board game? Stop by any of the Library’s public desks, where someone will be ready and willing to help you get the information you need.
