YOUTH PROGRAMS

New Look, New Resources, New Toys! You may have noticed painters hard at work in kidZone earlier this summer as we brightened and energized the room. The new look included some rearranging of furniture and artwork, which provided more play space at the entrance. There you will find an exciting variety of interactive toys as well as more space behind the Enchanted Forest for early childhood toys. These include a weaving wall, magnetic ball run and a car track. “Our goal with the department refresh was to make the space welcoming

and engaging for youth of all ages,” said Youth Department Director Amber Creger. “The Library recognizes that children learn best when they have access to an environment that allows them to explore, discover and play. We look forward to continuing to offer quality opportunities to nurture a child’s curiosity and sense of wonder.” Another great new resource is the Library’s subscription to Miss Humblebee’s Academy, an interactive online learning program to help prepare preschool children for kindergarten. It

teaches language and literacy, math, science and social studies, and art and music through videos and games. Access it from our website to create a free account, then track your child’s readiness for kindergarten. “Miss Humblee’s Academy is a great resource for parents of preschoolers,” Amber said. “It’s the perfect supplement to support concepts learned in daycare or preschool.” We invite families to visit kidZone, check out books or toys, meet our helpful librarians…and see what’s new!

Librarian Lends a Hand When a patron needed to create a resume, she couldn’t locate the name and address of a company for which she once worked. Long out of business, its information did not even appear on Google. She was nearly ready to give up, but decided to try one last strategy: call the Schaumburg Library. Her call was answered by Virtual Branch Coordinator Kristin Moo, who searched for Flywheel Chicago Technology, the patron’s former employer. “Google is a great resource, but as librarians we’re trained to identify and search sources that Google doesn’t

reach,” Kristin said. “By using other sources, including LinkedIn, I was able to ascertain that the company had changed its name.” Kristin found the company’s CEO on the Internet. Armed with the new name, the patron was able to get all the information she needed for her resume. “Sometimes answering a reference question is like working out a puzzle,” Kristin said. “It’s so satisfying to put the pieces together and provide solutions for our patrons.”
