In the Mother’s Room, located next to the Program Room, you and your child can relax with a rocking chair, calming colors and walls void of artwork, except for one small butterfly painting by children’s illustrator Gail Gibbons. There is even a floor-based light

Great Family Resources For nearly a decade, the Rojas family has been learning, playing, creating, and doing homework at the Library. Christine and Armando moved to Schaumburg when their daughter, Alexandra, was just a toddler, and her little brother, Ryan, was an infant. Through the years, they attended magic, craft, storytelling, Read to a Dog and gaming programs, checked out books from kidsZone, then Teen Place, and participated in many summer reading challenges. Christine, an occupational therapist at the Early Learning Center in District 54, says she has enjoyed attending travel presentations and making ceramics and holiday centerpieces at the Library. She also used the meeting rooms for her scout
troop when she was a Girl Scout leader, as well as to work on projects with co-workers. “The Library offers every resource we need,” Christine said. “It offers a place to relax and enjoy reading by the fireplace, or with a snack in the coffee shop. The staff are extremely helpful in finding whatever you’re looking for, and if they don’t have it, they’ll get it for you from another library.” Now 17 and 15 years old, Alex and Ryan meet with friends in Teen Place to socialize and study, and the whole family still comes to check out books and movies. “It’s clean and comfortable and in a great location,” Christine said about the Library. “Plus the hours are user-friendly. We’re happy it’s here.”

Discover Illinois! Curious about Al Capone, Illinois state parks, Abraham Lincoln, or local ghosts? These subjects and many more can be found in our Illinois Collection, located on the Library’s second floor. Here you will find historical scrapbooks, municipal codes, immigrant stories and biographies of the people who shaped Illinois…for better or for worse. Peruse the shelves for topics on all things Chicago, from its famous river and vibrant music scene to its immigrants, politicians and architecture. Or wander into the Prairie State’s small towns via country histories and photo books of picturesque barns and farms. “Records, videotapes, the Don Brannon Humor Corner, and paintings have all come and gone as special
collections at the Library, but the Illinois Collection remains,” said Local History Librarian Jane Rozek. “If you’re looking for books on Illinois travel, architecture, true crime, Chicago and its suburbs, TV, radio and theater, then you’ll definitely want to explore this special collection.” Three of our popular books are Chicago Eternal, which explores the cemeteries of Chicago in a full sized, photo filled book. Pizza City U.S.A., by Steve Dolinsky, aka “The Hungry Hound,” takes you on a tour of some of the area’s best pizza spots. The pictures alone will leave you ravenous. The Breakaway, by Bryan Smith, is an inside look at the Wirtz family and their ownership of the Chicago Blackhawks.
This is just a sampling of what you’ll find as you browse the fascinating histories, biographies, records, and photos of the Library’s Illinois Collection.
