PROGRAMS FOR

ALL AGES WINTER CHALLENGE DEC. 1-JAN. 31 TAKE THE CHALLENGE

HELP US GIVE BACK

JOIN TODAY

Join us in reading great books and completing activities that are good for our bodies, brains and world. This family-friendly Winter Challenge incorporates reading goals and activities for all ages, and makes it simple for families to participate together.

This year, Beanstack (our online reading log software) has teamed up with Dallas Mavericks Owner/Businessman/Shark Tank personality Mark Cuban and extended an offer to participating libraries: read a total of 50,000 books and one million minutes in January and Cuban will donate $25,000 to First Book, a national charity that provides books to children in need.

Sign up at SchaumburgLibrary.org/read or go to any Library location.

How it Works: • Earn badges by reading or completing activities. You earn your first badge just by joining the program! • Track your progress online, or use a paper log to track your reading and activities. • Upon earning five badges, kids and teens win a prize of a book and adults will be entered into a drawing to win a $10 gift card to Half Price Books (35 gift cards available).

Let’s do our part and log lots of reading this winter!

Congratulations to Campanelli Elementary School for winning first place in the Library’s School District 54 Summer Reading Challenge! Campanelli had the most participants, many of whom are pictured here.

HOME BUYING AND SELLING

In Search of Schnitzel Wiener Schnitzel. There’s no lack of recipes for it, but Hoffman Estates resident Helen Beers wanted a very specific recipe – the one she used to make every year for her husband on their anniversary. The problem was…it was from a 1963 Better Homes and Gardens cookbook she had given to her daughter. A cookbook that went up in flames when her daughter’s condo burned several years ago. But Helen, a Schaumburg Township District Library patron since 1973, knew just where to go for help with her dilemma. She went straight to our Reference Desk and relayed her situation. “Librarian Jane Rozek overheard the conversation and said she thought she had the book at home,” Helen said. “She didn’t, so she sent a different recipe, but it wasn’t quite the same.” Jane enlisted fellow librarians to help with the search, and together they found a PDF of the cookbook

online; this time with the exact recipe Helen wanted. “I made it the other day for our anniversary, and it was delicious!” Helen said she’s been a Library patron since the Hoffman Estates Branch was located in the village’s former fire station. She has fond memories of taking her children there to check out books, and now uses both the branch and Central Library locations. “When I need help finding something, I know just where to go,” she said. “Jane was beyond helpful with looking for that recipe. She was so nice, and other librarians have been so nice, too.” Whether you’re looking for a recipe, a biography, a how-to book, the history of Hollywood, tips on job-searching or the indigenous species of the Amazon rain forest, our Reference librarians can steer you in the right direction. Visit the Central Library or branches in Hoffman Estates and Hanover Park, call the Reference Desk or go online and ask via live chat. Bring your questions to us – we love a challenge!

“Reading is one of the great loves of my life,” said Barb, a regular at the book club. “With the book club, I’m introduced to books I would never pick up on my own.”
