Letter from the Executive Director I hope this letter finds you and your loved ones staying safe and healthy as we all prepare for winter and another new year. Since July 2020, all our locations have been open, working hard to safely offer all the Library services you know, love, trust and rely on. If you haven’t been to any of our Library locations since the pandemic began, we invite you to come back whenever you feel comfortable to do so. Or, try out some of our newer services, like the Pick-Up Lockers at our Central Library that give you 24/7 access to pick up items you place on hold. Soon, these lockers will also be installed at our branch locations – we all have been patiently awaiting their arrival! Things may look a little different around the Library these days – masks are required for all visitors age 2 and up regardless of vaccination status, and we now have many contactless service options available – but you’re welcome to browse and check out items, attend in-person or online programs or even sit down to study, work or relax. Before you stop by, you can always review our hours of service, safety guidelines and contactless service options at SchaumburgLibrary.org/plan-your-visit. In the midst of many transitions and challenges, we’re preparing to roll out a new strategic plan for our Library in the coming months. In the fall, you provided your feedback through surveys, focus groups and listening sessions and we heard you! Since then, our staff has been working hard to create a plan based on the needs of our community, and we’re excited to put it into action over the next few years. It’s been a while since we’ve seen some of you, so we’re glad to come back into your homes with our Guide. You can expect to hear from us quarterly, with news of what’s happening at your Library, along with information about upcoming programs. We’ll see you around the Library! Annie Miskewitch Executive Director

Once Book, One Community is a community-wide event which gets participants reading and talking about themes that are shared among the books for all age groups. Families will discuss the same topics even though their age groups’ titles are different. To determine which books will be on the list, a committee of librarians starts meeting six months before the program begins. “We discuss various book options,” said Creative Services Librarian Stephanie Driscoll. “We want to make sure that our books are by exciting authors and the themes are relevant to our community and what’s

books for younger readers because they touch on the themes of identity, family, racism and belonging. “It’s important for our Library to continue to showcase and amplify all voices and to encourage community discussion and dialogue.” Many patrons participated in our previous One Book, One Community event, which featured Pachinko by Min Jin Lee as the adult selection. We hope even more will join the fun with this year’s selections: The Vanishing Half for adults, You Should See Me in A Crown for teens, Class Act for tweens and Black is a Rainbow Color for kids.

DON’T SEE WHAT YOU WANT? TRY ILL! Even with 432,000 items on our book and audiovisual shelves, and thousands more in our digital collections, there’s a chance you may not see what you want. Not to worry! Our Interlibrary Loan (ILL) Service staff will contact libraries nationwide in an effort to get that item into your hands. If you are searching online, Get started at SchaumburgLibrary.org/services/interlibrary-loan. Even better, you can request up to 15 items at one time! The list is endless!” Dr. Kannan said the materials he requests include DVDs, books and scientific papers. “I love the ILL team,” he said. “They are very prompt, friendly and professional. They have often renewed materials for me and have found some amazing videos and technical papers. I feel very grateful.”

To request an ILL, you’ll need to log in with your Library card information. If you are in the Library, our librarians will be happy to assist. From home, you can call (847) 923-3322 for help with this process. Please be sure to return ILL items on time. Although Schaumburg Library is fine free, the lending library may charge late fees for which you will be responsible.

Pam Wilson began using the ILL service when she was getting her master’s degree and needed books that were not in the Library’s collection. When she learned about ILL, her problem was solved. “Academic books are often too expensive to purchase,” she said. “I’m now working on my PhD and I get better service from the Schaumburg Library interlibrary loan department than my own university.” Additionally, Pam said the ILL staff members are “fantastic,” and even negotiated longer loan times for her from other libraries.

Dr. Sudesh Kannan uses the ILL service several times a month and said he thinks of it as having all the USA libraries at his

Bill Maniates has been using the ILL service for the past two years to research legal history. Retired, he finally has time to explore American history, his college major. He was surprised and happy to receive the 1873 edition from the Military Academy at West Point. He has additionally requested
