Letter from the Executive Director I hope this letter finds you and your loved ones staying safe and healthy as we all prepare for winter and another new year. Since July 2020, all our locations have been open, working hard to safely offer all the Library services you know, love, trust and rely on. If you haven’t been to any of our Library locations since the pandemic began, we invite you to come back whenever you feel comfortable to do so. Or, try out some of our newer services, like the Pick-Up Lockers at our Central Library that give you 24/7 access to pick up items you place on hold. Soon, these lockers will also be installed at our branch locations – we all have been patiently awaiting their arrival! Things may look a little different around the Library these days – masks are required for all visitors age 2 and up regardless of vaccination status, and we now have many contactless service options available – but you’re welcome to browse and check out items, attend in-person or online programs or even sit down to study, work or relax. Before you stop by, you can always review our hours of service, safety guidelines and contactless service options at SchaumburgLibrary.org/plan-your-visit. In the midst of many transitions and challenges, we’re preparing to roll out a new strategic plan for our Library in the coming months. In the fall, you provided your feedback through surveys, focus groups and listening sessions and we heard you! Since then, our staff has been working hard to create a plan based on the needs of our community, and we’re excited to put it into action over the next few years. It’s been a while since we’ve seen some of you, so we’re glad to come back into your homes with our Guide. You can expect to hear from us quarterly, with news of what’s happening at your Library, along with information about upcoming programs. We’ll see you around the Library! Virtual Artist in Residence: Ashley A. Jones

Ashley A. Johnes is a big fan of Brit Bennett and The Vanishing Half, and we’re so excited to welcome her as our Virtual Artist in Residence for One Book, One Community. Ashley is known for her illustrations and portraits, which speak to the history and present-day challenges of Black identity in America. She currently serves as an art faculty member at St. Edmund’s Academy in Pittsburgh. Her work on identity and colorism in the African American community has been exhibited nationally and internationally and is in numerous private and museum collections.

Not to worry! Our Interlibrary Loan (ILL) Service staff will contact libraries nationwide in an effort to get that item into your hands. If the lending library allows it, you may renew each item up to two times.

The list is endless!” Dr. Kannan said the materials he requests include DVDs, books and scientific papers. “I love the ILL team,” he said. “They are very prompt, friendly and professional. They have often renewed materials for me and have found some amazing videos and technical papers. I feel very grateful.”

Although Schaumburg Library is fine free, the lending library may charge late fees for which you will be responsible.

Pam Wilson began using the ILL service when she was getting her master’s degree and needed books that were not in the Library’s collection. When she learned about ILL, her problem was solved. “Academic books are often too expensive to purchase,” she said. “I’m now working on my PhD and I get better service from the Schaumburg Library interlibrary loan department than my own university.” Additionally, Pam said the ILL staff members are “fantastic,” and even negotiated longer loan times for her from other libraries.

Dr. Sudesh Kannan uses the ILL service several times a month and said he thinks of it as having all the USA libraries at his
