Sharon Ogorzalek moved to Schaumburg 38 years ago. “I got my Library card immediately after moving,” Sharon said. “I’m still a frequent flyer at the Library, but first and foremost, I enjoy finding interesting new books to read at the Library.” Earlier this year, Sharon was thrilled to learn we’d be reading Pachinko by Min Jin Lee for One Book, One Community. “I read Pachinko in the fall of 2018,” Sharon said. “It’s beautifully written and is a testament to universal truths. We like to select a book that we believe our community will relate to and will get them talking. Sharon thinks Pachinko will do just that, noting there’s much to discuss about this “unique, sweeping generational story filled with unforgettable characters who struggle with questions of right and wrong, survival, loyalty and deceit.” Sharon is particularly looking forward to author Min Jin Lee’s visit on Thursday, Feb. 20 at the Al Larson Prairie Center for the Arts. Sharon notes that she has many questions she’d love to ask the author, but she’s particularly curious to know if life is any better today for people of Korean ancestry living and working in Japan. Read the book and join Sharon in the conversation.

“I don’t believe in the kind of magic in my books, but I do believe something very magical can happen when you read a good book.”

This Family Loves the Library Hanover Park resident Ernest Boehm and his family have been using our Library for books, movies, programs and classes since 2006. His wife, Wei Ning, even took citizenship classes at the Library after moving to the United States from China, and participated in the Library’s 2017 Naturalization Oath Ceremony, where she officially became a U.S. citizen.

Ernest explained that he occasionally wants to read a specialty book from one of the university libraries, a particular art book, or hear a recording of an opera performance, and can’t find it within the library. “That’s when I really appreciate having the Interlibrary Loan program.” Ernest also likes the “suggest a book” function on the library’s website.

Ernest said he usually makes a beeline for the books – his primary reason for coming to the library. “I’m a pretty heavy reader,” Ernest said, “and I like using the Interlibrary Loan system when I want something that isn’t on the shelves, but that doesn’t happen too often.”

His children, ages 10 and 13, use the library for DVDs during most of the year, but in summer they participate in the Summer Challenge, “which really gets them to read a lot more,” Ernest said. They also enjoy the special events, like Comic Con, and used to love the puppet shows and storytelling when they were younger.
