And your whole family can participate because we’ve selected the picture book Dear Juno by Soyung Pak and chapter book Listen, Slowly by Thanhhà Lạại with similar themes so your kids can be a part of the fun and the conversation. Did you know the average age in Schaumburg Township is 39.7, and that 51 percent of the population is female? Our highest race percentages are white, Asian and Hispanic, respectively, and we have a high school graduation rate of 93.8 percent. Veterans comprise nearly five percent of our population, and just over 30 percent of us were born in a foreign country. All of the above information hailed from the 2010 census, which means it is outdated by a decade. Every 10 years, the U.S. government counts the number of people living within its borders. Beginning in March, everyone in the United States will be required by law to answer census questions. The statistics gathered from the answers determine many factors vital to our system of government and our community services and resources. For example, the census determines how many representatives will be sent to Congress from each state. It also plays a key role in the annual distribution of billions of dollars in federal funds. These funds support state, county and community programs that impact housing, education, transportation, employment, health care and public policy. As you can imagine, counting our continually growing population is a massive undertaking that requires years

of planning, a lot of workers, and the cooperation of everyone living in the U.S. Each of us can help smooth the process by answering the questions in a timely and accurate fashion. Fortunately, there are many ways to do this: online, by phone or on a paper form. Here at the Library, we’re ready to assist! You can drop in to our “Census 2020” sessions scheduled at all three Library locations for one-on-one help with filling out your form. See page 17 for details. You are also welcome to attend “Census 2020: Be Counted,” on March 5 to learn more about why the census is important. If you have a question and can’t get to the Library, call the Reference Desk and one of our reference librarians will help you find the answer.

“I like everything here because this library is very cool and I also like the books.”

Get Healthy, Stay Healthy Health and wellness – these terms encompass a wide range of meanings including physical, mental and emotional. The path to achieving any of these forms of health are even broader, from certain types of food and medicine to exercise, yoga, vitamins, meditation, and knowledge. Here at the Library, you’ll find a plethora of resources to help you achieve or maintain all varieties of wellness.

If it’s healthy recipes you seek, head toward the 641.5 section of the stacks for nearly 800 titles from which to choose. Whether you seek low calorie, high protein, heart-healthy, low carb, vegan, or low sugar, you’ll find it there. You can check out the books, use the Library’s copiers to copy the recipes you like, or whip out your cell phone and take a photo of the recipes that sound good.

Let’s start with books. (All numbers mentioned refer to the Dewey Decimal System and are printed on the book spines and listed on the bookstack endcaps.) Medical topics can be found in the 610 - 618 section in the reference area on the second floor and at our branch libraries. To find a specific topic, type it into the online catalog, or simply ask a librarian for assistance. Information on illnesses from aortic aneurysms to zoonotic hookworm can be found in these bookstacks. If you want to learn about the causes, symptoms, standard and alternative treatments of diseases, disorders and injuries, as well as home remedies and ancient remedies, this is the section you need. If you’re interested in prevention, exercise, pregnancy, mental health and prescription drugs, this is still the section you need. And if you’re a teen, stop by Teen Place for health-related books designed just for you.

Prefer to hear from living, breathing experts, or get screened by professional nurses? Come to one of the many free health and wellness programs held right here in the Library. In February and March, we’re offering blood pressure and bone density screenings. Also, in March, you can learn about Medicare in a way that will make it easily understandable. Other topics offered throughout the year include stress prevention, tools for managing your health, caring for aging parents, preventing falls, and much more.

We’ve also refreshed our Fiction and Youth areas in recent years.

23 SCHAUMBURG TOWNSHIP DISTRICT LIBRARY • February/March 2020

Due to the size of our Library, we split our renovation projects into phases to be sure we can continue to serve you while we work on improving various areas of our building. All of these projects are part of an architectural master plan for our building that looks to accommodate the changing ways you use our Library. It’s important to remember that our building is 22 years old now and we see about 1 million visitors each year. That’s a lot of usage and general wear on our well-loved Library! So updates like this are necessary so we can keep our Library in working order for you. Your comments and questions are welcome throughout this renovation project. Just send an email to renovation@stdl.org. And keep up with all the latest renovation news at SchaumburgLibrary.org/ renovation.

THINKING MONEY

Money. We save it, spend it and work hard for it. The abundance or lack of it determines our lifestyle and influences our choices for housing, education, healthcare and more. Thinking Money, a traveling exhibition created by the FINRA Investor Education Foundation in partnership with the American Library Association, teaches kids and their parents and caregivers about saving and spending.
