Turkish born Gerard Cakan embarked on his journey toward becoming a U.S. citizen when he moved to the Schaumburg area in March 2016 to marry his girlfriend of three years. He was at the Library reading a flyer on English as a Second Language classes when a librarian told him about the Conversation Club. Out of curiosity, he went over to where the group meets and immediately saw Helen Stewart, community engagement librarian. “I felt discouraged to come to the class, and kind of shy, but then I met Helen and she said ‘you’re coming to the club,’ and so I came,” Gerard said. “It just happened that the club was about to begin.”
Gerard, who has an excellent command of the English language, said he likes the Conversation Club because “it’s not a formal class for grammar. You learn about the things people are talking about.” Recent topics have been the Chicago Cubs, Bob Dylan and holidays. They also learn about our nation’s history and the special days on which we commemorate historical events. “This gives me knowledge of common things to talk about with other people,” Gerard said. But anyone in the Conversation Club will tell you that learning is only one part of the experience. “When you come from another country, you don’t know lots of people or have connections,” Gerard said. “Then you make friends in the group and you realize you’re not the only one struggling to learn English and integrate.”

GROWING BUSINESS When the Chicago Wolves needed business resources, they turned to Business Liaison Librarian Patti Smolin. Wolves staffers Leslie Metcalf, B2B & group event specialist; and Dan Komarchuk, group event executive, met Patti at the Daily Herald Hospitality/Business Ledger Expo. “They were interested in business sources, so we scheduled a Book-a-Librarian appointment,” Patti said. “They were impressed with the selection, particularly Reference USA.” The Chicago Wolves representatives plan to visit the Library monthly to use the resources.
13
“We found the database demo and information extremely helpful,” Leslie said. “Patti answered our questions and navigated our concerns expertly. We now have an ‘ace up our sleeve’ in terms of securing new prospects for our business. This is a fantastic way for libraries to co-exist with businesses.” Dan agreed, saying the Library’s resources will save him a lot of research time. “This will be my new main source of prospecting for new business,” he said. STDL cardholders are welcome to make a 30-minute Book-aLibrarian appointment by calling (847) 985-4000 or signing up online at SchaumburgLibrary.org.

WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH It began as Women’s History Week in 1982, but five years later, Congress expanded it to the entire month of March, thanks to a petition by the National Women’s History Project. It is also celebrated in the United Kingdom and Australia. Throughout March, schools, libraries, museums and various organizations pay tribute to the invaluable contributions women have made to science, technology, art, education and society. If you would like to learn how women throughout history have shaped our world, browse the 921 book stacks or DVDs for biographies, or ask a reference librarian to help you find other types of books about women in history.
