One Book, One Community is a time for us all to read the same book, sparking conversations about the book and its themes. Read the book. Join the conversation. It’s that simple! Join us this winter, December – February, as we read Room by Emma Donoghue, the bestselling novel that was adapted into an Oscar-winning film. Let’s come together to discuss the book’s themes: community, family ties, isolation and resilience. Your whole family can join in! We’ve selected a picture book, a chapter book and a YA novel with themes similar to Room, so kids can also be part of the conversation. • Ivan, The Remarkable True Story of the Shopping Mall Gorilla by Katherine Applegate – a picture book recommended for ages 5-8 • The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate – an illustrated chapter book recommended for ages 9-12
• Stolen by Lucy Christopher – a novel recommended for ages 12-19 Books are now available to check out. A limited number of free copies of Room and our books for young readers will be available on a first come, first served basis beginning Jan. 2 at all Library locations. These special copies of Room have been signed by author Emma Donoghue! This year’s One Book, One Community titles were chosen because they offer an opportunity for individuals and families to discuss some compelling issues that we’re all facing right now. ONE COMMUNITY POSTCARD PROJECT Saturday, Jan. 2 – Thursday, Feb. 18 Four local artists each created a work of art based on our four themes of family, community, isolation and resilience. We’ve turned their beautiful work into postcards for you to take and share with friends and loved ones as we all struggle to deal with the burdens of isolation. Pick up a pre-stamped postcard at any Library location, add your own message and send it along to someone who may need a word of encouragement, love or support. Not sure who to send to? Steyn Family Chrissie said, adding they also “pop over for some resources” when Everly gets interested in something new. “She’s really into the 50 nifty states right now,” Chrissie said. “She’s memorized a song about the states so we are trying to teach her more about the states, like where they are, etc. The library has great resources for that.” Toys, books and learning devices are just a few of the Library offerings used by Schaumburg residents Chrissie and Marthinus Steyn and their two young children. A psychotherapist, Chrissie said they love coming to the Library to choose books, check out baby toys, and let the children play in Youth Services. “During the initial quarantine, we picked up a huge stack of books every week. Now we are back in school, so we request a few books weekly that line up with the theme of Everly’s classroom,”
Marthinus, who manages the food and clothing programs for the Care Center at Willow Creek Community Church, said they like to check out a learning tablet for Everly before going on a long trip. “It’s great to have that option available,” he said. Chrissie agreed, saying she really appreciates the Library’s free resources. “I love knowing I don’t have to hold all the stuff in our home and can rotate toys, books and learning devices. It’s a huge gift.”

Dr. Ewing’s most recent work, 1919, is a unique collection of poems exploring the story of the Chicago Race Riots of 1919, an event largely neglected in modern discourse. She is also the author of the 2018 nonfiction work, Ghosts in the Schoolyard: Racism and School Closings on Chicago’s South Side, which examines the 2013 wave of targeted school closing in Chicago’s predominately low-income and African-American south side neighborhoods, resulting in severe educational inequity and a disproportionate lack of resources.
