July 6, 2021 marks one year since we reopened our Library buildings to you after being closed for an Annie Miskewitch, unprecedentExecutive Director ed 16 weeks. I want to take a moment to pause and recognize how much has changed, how far we’ve come, and how we’ve continued to serve you in that time. Within days of closing, we launched online programming and quickly had dozens of virtual programs available for you to join each week while you stayed safe at home. We’ve continued to offer online programs and now have some limited in-person programs available. We recognized the hardship that COVID brought to many in our community. We are now fine free and also passed a $1.5 million abatement, putting a little extra money back into your pockets. We outfitted all our locations with plexiglass, hand sanitizer, masks and stay safe protocols as we welcomed all our staff members back to work on June 1, 2020. We continue to follow safety guide-

lines from public health officials to ensure our Library remains a safe place for all. We developed a Curbside Pick-Up program from the ground up and have completed more than 25,000 transactions through this brandnew service. This service continues at our Branches. We safely reopened our buildings to you on July 6, 2020. Though things looked different, many came back to browse and check out items, and use our computers. Throughout 2020 and into 2021, we’ve gradually expanded our hours, services and capacity limits. Now, nearly all our services are restored to pre-pandemic levels and processes. We completed a renovation on our first floor! If you haven’t seen it yet, please stop by when you feel safe doing so – it really is beautiful and very functional. While the last 15 months have not been easy, we’ve been challenged to think in new ways, try new things and really listen to what our community needs. It’s been a time of innovation and progress in many ways, and we hope to hold onto that spirit to continue to serve you in the best ways we can.

Mom’s Library Roots Began in College the Schaumburg Library on visits home from Milwaukee, where she was attending UWM. Back then, she would use the library’s resources for homework, but these days her time at the library is usually spent in Youth Services with her 7-year-old twins and 11-year-old daughter. “They enjoy the activities and checking out books,” she said.
Amanda Prellwitz of Hoffman Estates remembers coming to
While her daughter searched for a title on the online catalog, Amanda talked about bringing her kids to the library for the past
three years, and how much it has helped with their reading skills and homework. “They really like the Summer Challenge,” she added. “It has a lot of fun things for them to do, and the books, of course.” Like Amanda’s children, anyone can register for the Summer Challenge, which continues through Sunday, Aug. 1.
