AVOID THE SUMMER SLIDE
No, we’re not talking about the slides at the playground or waterpark. Go ahead and have fun with those slides all summer long. The slide to avoid is the reading skills slide – the result of too little reading over the summer, which results in reduced reading skills when kids return to school. At the beginning of each school year, teachers have to spend precious classroom time re-teaching skills that had been learned the previous school year. The good news is…the summer slide is very easy to avoid, and we have just the resources you need all for free!
The Scholastic Parents website suggests students read six books over the summer to keep their reading skills intact. Books should match a child’s age, interests and abilities. Here at the Library, you’ll find plenty of choices. We’ve got about 75,000 titles in kidsZone and over 8,000 in Teen Place! We also have a great Summer Challenge lined up, featuring Chuck Jones Summer of Creativity. Be sure to sign up for fun incentives to read and participate in other activities. You can find out all about the Summer Challenge on the next two pages.
Parents of preschoolers can start building reading skills by bringing kids to the Library’s storytimes or using our fun online program, Miss Humblebee’s Academy. Geared toward children ages 2-6 years, this online program is accessible through the Online Learning page of the Library’s website: SchaumburgLibrary.org. Children ages 6 years and up are welcome to participate in Ready Readers, where they can pick up a ticket to read aloud to one of our Summer Squad volunteers for 15 minutes. Young readers might also enjoy Book Explorers – a monthly book club for ages 5-8 years. Other Library book clubs for kids are Between the Lines, for ages 9-12 years, and Who Was, a non-fiction book club for ages 8-14 years. We know summer is packed with vacations, staycations, sports and many other activities, as well it should be! But we hope that, in between, you’ll use the library’s many resources and programs to help your children avoid the summer slide.
