ALL AGES FEATURING... GRAPHIC NOVELS
Whether your fiction reading preferences lean toward horror, mystery, sci fi or romance, there’s a graphic novel for you! This form of writing has grown significantly in recent years, drawing readers of all ages and covering every genre. With a collection of approximately 9,000 graphic novels at the Central library, and another 1,800 at each branch, we have offerings to suit nearly everyone’s interest. “The explosion of graphic novel adaptations on TV and in cinemas over the past couple of decades has certainly added to the popularity of graphic novels, particularly with older audiences,” said Fiction Manager Emily Vinci. “Furthermore, we now see pop culture that starts as a TV show (Stranger Things and Buffy the Vampire Slayer are some examples) and then gets a graphic novel adaptation, giving fans another way to access the stories and characters they love.”
Titan, Demon Slayer, Haikyu, My Hero Academia, and Naruto, while some favorite adult titles are Saga, The Boys, Batman and Watchmen. “It’s been a common misconception for a long time that comics and graphic novels only appeal to younger audiences, but as the medium has expanded to include more genres including nonfiction, it is just as popular with adults,” Emily said. “There’s also great value in graphic novels for individuals who struggle with reading, including those learning English as a second language and reluctant readers.” Graphic novels are found in the Fiction, Teen, and Youth areas with a call number that includes GN. If you have tried them yet, consider checking one out. You may be surprised!
Some of our most popular titles for kids include Amulet, Wings of Fire, Phoebe and her Unicorn, and The Babysitter’s Club. Teens are drawn to Attack on

Library Board President Receives Leadership Award even to those living outside the service area,” according to the Government Technology website. “To assist the community, the Library also cancelled all fines and passed a $1.5 million abatement on the property tax Library line item, resulting in a 9.4 percent reduction in taxes.”
Congratulations to Library Board of Trustees President Anita ForteScott, who received the Special Districts Leadership in Technology Innovation Award from Government Technology, an AT&T program. This year, the organization sought notable examples of how special districts applied innovative technologies and leadership to COVID-19 response and recovery efforts. Ms. ForteScott was chosen because “she spearheaded the extension of the Library’s digital resources to school and high school district students and their families, and
Elected to the Library board in 2005, Ms. Forte-Scott played key roles in opening the Hanover Park Branch Library, the merger of five area library systems, the construction of Teen Place and major renovations to the Central Library. She also served as the Library’s Trustee representative on the North Suburban Library System Board of Directors from 2007-2011. “During my years as a Library Trustee, I have greatly appreciated the opportunity to learn from other professionals about ways in which we can strive to provide more meaningful services to our
patrons,” she said. Noting the Library’s extensive growth since its “humble beginnings in 1963,” Ms. Forte-Scott says she credits the dedicated staff and leadership of the trustees. “Our vision of being ‘A Bridge to Your Future’ is most notably seen by the generations of families who continue to utilize all that STDL has to offer.” Always looking ahead, Ms. ForteScott said she’d like to see the Library “continue to transform its spaces into ones that are attractive, meaningful, and build and sustain memories through the promotion of equity, arts and culture, creativity, and community engagement.” The Library is grateful to Ms. Forte-Scott for her 15 years of service and her valuable contributions to the Library and community.

SEE “PICTURING WOMEN INVENTORS” EXHIBIT IN MARCH Throughout American history, women with diverse backgrounds and interests created inventions that changed lives every day. But women haven’t always had equal opportunities to be inventors or received as much recognition. For these reasons, the Library is proud to host “Picturing Women Inventors,” a poster exhibition that explores the inventions of 19 highly accomplished American women, presented by the Smithsonian and the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Astronauts, computer pioneers and businesswomen join athletes, engineers and even teenagers in this remarkable group of featured inventors. The eight posters will be available to view on the first floor of the Central Library throughout March, which is Women’s History Month. “Picturing Women Inventors” is distributed at no cost to schools, libraries, museums and community organizations by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service in collaboration with the Lemelson Center for the Study of Invention and Innovation and the United States Patent and Trademark Office. It’s sponsored by Lyda Hill Philanthropies IF/ THEN Initiative and Ericsson.
