THE BIAS INSIDE US EXHIBIT Saturday, May 29 - Sunday, June 27 • 11 years & up Central Library Bias is an innate human trait; we all have it. The Bias Inside Us brings us an exploration of implicit bias to help us all become aware of our own bias so we can recognize its influence and impact on our behaviors and worldview. The Bias Inside Us is divided into six, interactive sections that will introduce you to implicit bias, show you examples of implicit bias in real life, reveal the serious consequences of implicit bias and help you retrain your brain to overcome your own biases. The Bias Inside Us is organized by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service. Major support is provided by The Otto Bremer Trust. SUMMER CHALLENGE REGISTER MAY 18 • Tuesday, June 1 - Aug. 1 Schaumburg Library is excited to celebrate diversity this summer! Join us for reading and activities with our Summer Challenge: Reading Colors Your World, and start logging your progress June 1. This summer-long learning program is a great way for kids to have fun with their families, all while experiencing the benefits of reading. Find ways to connect, design and inspire as you earn badges and work towards a final prize. This year, we’ll also be making a contribution to support a local charity of your choice when you complete the adult or teen Challenge. The more adults and teens who complete the Challenge, the more the Library can contribute to the chosen charities. You can participate entirely online if you choose, making it easy to have fun with the Summer Challenge while still keeping yourself and others safe. Teen Volunteers Make CardzforKidz When the pandemic hit and the Library closed, we developed new ways to serve the various segments of our community. For teens, that meant creating a new online teen volunteer program – Virtual Volunteens – that began last July. One of the group’s main projects is CardzforKidz, “a Chicago-based nonprofit organization that hand delivers hope and love by card to sick and recovering children, elderly, and traumatized patients across the US and increasingly more overseas,” according to CardzforKidz.org. Making the cards has been a way for teens to earn volunteer hours from the safety of their homes and has been a popular choice from the available options.

The purpose for sending cards is to help patients and families focus on something beside their current situations. Our Volunteens will do this by creating colorful and creative cards with encouraging phrases and fun puns. We’re hoping local teens will make a positive impact this summer by reaching our goal of 1,000 homemade cards.

Couple Uses Zoom to Learn & Connect Schaumburg residents for 40 years, Geri McCall Barrath and her husband, Paul, have long enjoyed using the Schaumburg Library, and that didn’t stop when the pandemic closed our doors and ended in-person programs. In fact, it increased their involvement in programs and even inspired Geri to start something new. “We enjoy anything historical, anything related to the arts, cooking, travel, Dann & Raymond’s Movie Club, biographies – you name it, we’ve probably Zoomed it,” Geri said. “Since the beginning of the pandemic, I have been writing a weekly newsletter of free things to watch from home. I have about 100 subscribers. The Schaumburg Library, along with dozens

of libraries across the US and UK, provide the bulk of my material.” During all the changes resulting from COVID-19 restrictions, Geri made lemonade from lemons by using the Library and Zoom to learn, be entertained, and meet new people. “It’s been great getting to see programs from historians and presenters as good as local ‘stars’ Jim Gibbons and Leslie Goddard,” she said. “I would never have seen these folks if it weren’t for (1) the pandemic, (2) Zoom and (3) the wonderful library system.” But Geri said there’s still one thing that’s always better in person.
