Food for Fines It’s a win-win! When it comes to our Food for Fines program, the saying holds true. If you owe fines for overdue Library materials, you can pay them off with non-perishable donated food items from Friday, Nov. 24 to Sunday, Dec. 31. Each donated item removes $1 in Library fines, with a limit of 10 items per visit. Please keep in mind that expired food will not be accepted, and food donations will not be accepted for lost or damaged items or collection agency fines. The best part about Food for Fines? All donations go to the Schaumburg Township Food Pantry. “By participating in Food for Fines, you reduce your fines and help out someone else who uses the food pantry,” said Kathy Morgan, director of circulation services for the Library. “It’s a great way to get a great result.” Some of the best items to donate are canned meats, canned pasta, canned soup, juice, snacks and crackers, baking items, tomato products, paper goods and hygiene products.

A Different World
Bucharest, Romania is a world away from Schaumburg, but Cristina Marcu decided to bridge that gap in order to be with family. After 20 years of working as a journalist in her native country, Cristina moved to the U.S. to live with her sister, who had been living here
for 16 years. Nearly a year later, she joined the Conversation Club at the Library, with Community Engagement Librarian Helen Stewart at the helm. Although she had learned to speak limited English in college, Cristina wanted to become fluent and learn more about her new country.
Cristina to apply for a job at the real estate company where she works. Inspired by that conversation, Cristina took a two-week real estate class.
“The Conversation Club helped me to improve my English,” Cristina said. “I discovered a lot about American traditions. It was like a breath of fresh air. I met many people and made friends.”
Cristina said she is glad for the connection that may lead to a new job, but even more, she is grateful for her new friends and all she has learned from attending the Conversation Club. “This is a wonderful library,” she said. “It is helping me reach my goals.”
One of those friends, a Japanese woman, encouraged
“I have to pass a test to receive the real estate certification,” she said. “After that, I hope to get hired and sell homes.”
