CULINARY CURIOSITY PROGRAMS
EXPERIENCE THE CULINARY CURIOSITY EXHIBIT!
DROP IN • Central Library Friday, Oct. 4 - Sunday, Jan. 5 Through the Culinary Curiosity exhibit , you’ll learn about working on a farm in the 1900s and discover where present day food comes from, how far it travels and how it’s produced. The Cutting Edge section showcases old-time devices that sliced meats and vegetables, and sausage presses that extruded ground meat while extracting juices. The Farm to Fork section displays tools used long ago by farmers to spray insecticide, pick fruit, prepare seeds and plant crops. Culinary Curiosity celebrates technical innovations in cooking. Drawn from the personal collections of Mel and Janet Mickevic, this exhibit is on display for public viewing for the first time. Arlington Heights Memorial Library, Aurora Public Library and Gail Borden Public Library District are also hosting elements of this large exhibit. In all, more than 250 items are included throughout this exhibit displayed at the four libraries.

Ready for Home Delivery? I like to go to the Library for programs, too, but it’s tougher these days.” At 82, it’s not as easy for Marlene to get around as it once was. That’s why she’s so grateful for the Library’s home delivery service.
Marlene Jones has always made it a priority to stay connected and active in the community. “I work with my church group to bring in presenters,” she said. “I love the programs and book clubs at The Barn. And
“I love to read mysteries, just like my mother did,” Marlene said, noting some favorite authors are Linda Castillo and J.D. Robb. Just at this visit, Marlene was returning a Stuart Woods book and outreach associate Sandy Kurth brought her one of Lee Child’s newest titles. Marlene admits she’s no tech-whiz, but she does have a computer and emails her requests to Sandy, who always comes through with a new batch of items every two weeks. She also keeps Sandy’s card handy and has a magnet
on her refrigerator with the Library’s home delivery phone number, so she can easily stay in touch. Sandy has been making home deliveries for just over a year. “I love being out in the community and connecting with people. There are some deliveries I make where I feel like Ed McMahon, handing out a check for a million dollars – people are just so happy to get books and movies from the Library brought right to their door.” Our home delivery services are available to anyone with mobility concerns, or vision or hearing impairments. Contact Sandy at skurth@stdl.org or (847) 923-3392 to see if you qualify and to start having Library books, movies, music and games to your home.

Make A Difference Want to make a difference in the world? How about starting with one person? The Library has partnered with the Elgin Literacy Connection to offer a new tutoring service for literacy and ESL learners. Through this partnership, Library community members complete a 12-hour training program and are matched with a learner on the waitlist. Once matched, they meet for one or two hours a week at their mutual convenience. How does this make a difference? Learning to read in English can be a life changer for adults who never learned this skill, as well as those who are new to our country. It builds confidence and
leads to job opportunities, which in turn leads to income and more opportunities for a better quality of life. For immigrants, it can set them on a path toward U.S. citizenship. “We’re excited to begin this volunteer tutoring service at the Library,” said Literacy Coordinator Claudia Baranowski. “There are many people who need help to improve their English or basic skills. Some are educated professionals in their home countries and want to practice their professions here in the U.S. Others have children in school and want to communicate better with their teachers. And many want better paying jobs.”
17 SCHAUMBURG TOWNSHIP DISTRICT LIBRARY • October/November 2019
Are you interested in helping to change the course of someone’s life? If so, see page 15 for details on when and how to become a literacy tutor. “As a former tutor, I found it was a very gratifying experience to work one-onone with a student,” Claudia said. “It is a wonderful feeling to know you’re making a difference in someone’s life.” Do you know people who can benefit from this service? Please share this information and have them call the Elgin Literacy Connection at (224) 215-6515 to be added to the waitlist for a tutor.
