September-November 2022 CELEBRATE OUR 60TH PAGE 4 BOOK & DISCUSSIONSMOVIE PAGE 19

It’s been almost a year since many of you joined our strategic planning process by taking part in a community survey. You shared some amazing ideas and feedback with us, especially on how we can help support a lifetime of learning for you and everyone in Schaumburg Township.

In our current strategic plan, the “future ready” area of focus encourages exploration, lifelong literacies, sustainability and more to help all of us prepare for the future and live life to its fullest.

1 SCHAUMBURG TOWNSHIP DISTRICT LIBRARY • SEPTEMBER-NOVEMBER 2022 Letter from the Executive Director

We look forward to this renovation beginning in the spring of 2023, just after we cele brate our Library’s 60th anniversary of serving our community. We know you already have a lifetime of memories and we want to help create new memories for the future. We’ll share news and updates about this renovation as they are available, and we hope to keep disruptions to a minimum for us all. Keep an eye on our website and our social media channels to stay in the loop. I’ll see you around the Library!

This portion of our strategic plan includes activities we’re really excited about, like ex panding our already popular Library of Things where you can check out board games, laptops, microphones, umbrellas and more; and taking our technology training sessions on the road to senior living facilities and community partners for hands-on training where it’s most convenient for you. It also includes a renovation of the second floor of our Central Library. Our Central Library is nearly 25 years old, and with about 1 million visitors each year... well, let’s just say the carpet up there has seen better days.

To be able to support your personal journey of lifelong learning, our spaces need to reflect the current times and anticipate the future. We’re excited for newer technology, flexible spaces and, of course, plenty of informative, educational, authoritative or simply fun books on all the subjects you’re interested in reading about.

Also, the needs of our community have changed so much in the last 25 years. Back in 1998 when the Central Library was built, Google had just been founded, the very first MP3 player was released and WiFi didn’t exist yet as we all endured the crazy sounds of dial-up modems. Wow!

Having a read ing log to track them helps us all stay accountable, even on week ends when life sometimes gets in the Theway.”Gloria family comes to the Library just about every week to show their reading logs to our staff. “I can see how proud they are of their progress as they walk up to the librarian to show them what they accomplished,” Amanda Oncesaid. they get stickers for their logs, it’s off to choose new books to check “Currently, out.my 7-year-old is enjoying the series Unicorn Princesses, and my 6-year-old is reading the series Dragon Girls. Friends and teachers definitely have a big impact on what they choose to read,” Amanda said. “And I choose books with my 2-year-old based on what’s she interested in that week – colors, animals, potty, numbers.”

READ ALL YEAR LONG

Cardholders since 2016, the Glo ria family really loves our Library.

Amanda has even been inspired to read more herself lately.

“With three kids to keep track of, it’s hard to stop to find a book for myself,” Amanda said. “The Hot Picks section is great because I can easily find popular books without much effort! I started en joying reading so much, I actually just started my own book club.”

Big news: our Library turns 60 this September! On September 8, 1962, voters passed a referendum by a vote of 430 to 69 to create their own public library in Schaumburg Township. In the spring of 1963, our Library first opened in a 1,000-square-foot house north of the corner of Roselle and Schaumburg roads. We’ve come a long way since then, but we’re forever grateful to those voters who were eager to have a library for their com Wemunity.have a few fun things hap pening this September to help us all celebrate: Interviews with Trustees Head to SchaumburgLibrary.tv to watch interviews with Library trustees past and present to learn about the history of our Library, the importance of public libraries and much more. Chase has opened up more and will make jokes and allow ev eryone to feel comfortable and enable others to be themselves just as he is himself.”

“When I first met Chase, he was shy yet curious about the pro cess of making music,” Jalen said. “As I helped Chase to learn the music production software and develop his sound, he evolved into a brilliant music producer who is pro active, confident and passionate about making music.

Chase also didn’t have to worry about costs of equipment as the Library’s Digital Production Stu dio is fully stocked with every thing he, and other teens learn ing to produce music need. “This class will get you far. Jalen is so patient and connects with us teens. He’ll help you get to where you need to be,” Chase said. “And the Library has been very nice and supportive. They even play my music in Teen “MusicPlace!” is for everybody, and I love that Schaumburg Library provides teens with the space to create and be themselves,” Jalen said. You can find Chase’s album on Spotify, and Jalen’s on all music platforms under the artist name Obs3rve. Best of all? Our Digital Produc tion Studio is equipped to help you with all your media projects - from making music, to recording a podcast, to using a green screen, to creating a video. It’s available for all ages to reserve and use the equipment to take your next project to the next level. CREATING MUSIC AT THE LIBRARY

“The Library has made a hugely positive impact on our family.” – The Foszcz Family

“I definitely did not think I’d ever create and produce music at all, let alone at my Library,” said 15-year-old Chase of Hoffman AndEstates.yet Chase is a standout of our Teen Record Label Proj ect, becoming the first artist to release an album on Spotify through the Library. The Teen Record Label Project was started in the summer of 2019 thanks to a Project Next Generation grant the Library was awarded through the Illinois State Library. It was at that point the Library started working with professional sound engineer Jalen Little to help teens learn audio recording, beat making and more. “I really enjoy enabling stu dents to imagine themselves in a position where they can create the music that they have in their mind,” said Jalen. “The ultimate joy is seeing students’ faces when they look on a music streaming platform and see their music posted for the world to Chase, hear.” under the artist name Dr. Airwaves, released his first album The Battle Collection, Vol. 1 on Spotify earlier this year.

TEEN PROGRAMS

Thanks to the Library’s record label, any and all proceeds made from streaming the song will go directly to Chase. “I actually want to be a writer when I grow up,” Chase said. “My first album correlates to a book I’m writing. The album tracks work on their own, but they’re also kind of a soundtrack to the book.”
