READ THE BOOK. JOIN THE CONVERSATION.
IT’S THAT SIMPLE!
ONE BOOK, ONE COMMUNITY IS A TIME FOR US ALL TO READ THE SAME BOOK, SPARKING CONVERSATIONS ABOUT TOPICS THAT MATTER TO OUR COMMUNITY.
LEARN MORE AND GET INVOLVED AT SCHAUMBURGLIBRARY.ORG/ONE-BOOK
Join us this winter as we read This Tender Land by William Kent Krueger, the New York Times bestselling, historical fiction novel. Let’s come together to discuss the book’s themes: family, home, identity and belief.
With the feel of a modern classic, This Tender Land is an enthralling, big-hearted epic about four orphans journeying together on a search for a place to call their own. “A picturesque tale of adventure during the Great Depression... a journey over inner and outer terrain toward wisdom and freedom.” —Minneapolis Star Tribune
This Tender Land gives a broad and universal picture of undertaking a journey to find where you belong while our One Book, One Community selections for young readers focus on Native experiences of that same search for home, family, identity and belief.
MEET THE AUTHOR
Our One Book, One Community will conclude with a visit from award-winning author William Kent Krueger at the Al Larson Prairie Center for the Arts on Feb. 16. Join us for a talk and Q&A with the author, followed by a book signing.
EXHIBIT
From Dec. 12 - Feb. 16, our Central Library will host “Dorothea Lange’s America,” a focused exhibition of 30 original lifetime prints by the legendary documentary photographer. Lange’s empathetic images of migrant workers, suffering families, and tortured landscapes seared the faces of the Great Depression into America’s consciousness.
TINY ART SHOW
Create a mini masterpiece based on our One Book, One Community themes of family, home, belief and identity. Register to pick up a kit with supplies, then return your submission to any Library location by Jan. 9 to be featured in our Tiny Art Show, on display through Feb. 16.
BOOKS FOR YOUNG READERS

Parents and caregivers: join us to learn about prospective preschools, daycares and home daycares in the area. Representatives from each preschool and daycare will be available to give you information and to answer your questions.
Michele Hedlund of Schaumburg has been coming to Schaumburg Library for many years. She loves reading and particularly likes fantasy and romance books. Michele listens to audiobooks while working around the house and reads a bit just before bed, too.
So what’s so special about Michele and her reading habits, you ask? She does her reading with Libby – the eBook and eAudiobook app.
“It was an easy transition to eBooks,” Michele told us. “The only challenge is when I have to wait for a book I put on hold.”
We can all relate to the frustration and anticipation of waiting for our holds to come in!
Michele made the switch to eBooks about six years ago.
“I was searching for a book I want ed on the Library’s website and saw the alternative ways I can check out books,” Michele said.
Michele shared that she likes the convenience of eBooks and loves how many titles are available through Libby.
“I recently read Howl’s Moving Castle with my kids, and House of Sky and Breath for myself. I’m currently listen ing to Clockwork Angel.”
Ready to give eBooks a try? Head to the eLibrary at SchaumburgLibrary. org to get started with Libby.

MEET 1:1 WITH A LIBRARIAN
When Kathy Reynolds of Roselle first connected with our Local History Librarian Jane Rozek about 10 years ago, she wasn’t quite sure what to expect. She brought with her some old family photos and diary entries from her grandmother Estelle Link, wife of Adolph Link, namesake of Link Elementary School.
“The diary was not detailed,” Kathy said, “but there was an entry for almost every day. Jane was thrilled to read those.”
More recently, when Kathy came across more of her grandfather’s things, she knew just what to do.
“I came back to the Library with my brother and those items,” Kathy shared. “We sat across from Jane, handing her items. She’d look at each item carefully and ask us questions.”
Jane was particularly interested in hand-drawn cards Kathy’s grandpa created each year, like the one shown here, to send their family and friends season’s greetings.
“I felt like Jane was genuinely interested in me and my family,” Kathy said. “She was pleasant and curious and asked so many great questions that got us thinking.”
Kathy’s appointment with Jane is what we call Book A Librarian. Whether you’re interested in preserving local history, like Kathy, have a detailed research project you’d like help with, are looking to grow your small business, or want to improve your tech skills, our librarians are ready and available to help with 1:1 meetings tailored to suit your particular needs.
