FROM THE DIRECTOR
We have a lot of exciting things planned for spring and summer of 2022! Movin’ on Main kicks off on Sunday, April 3 from 12 – 4 p.m. It’s an open streets event and we’ll have fitness demonstrations, health & wellness vendors, DJ music, kids’ activities, and food trucks. Bring your bikes, scooters, strollers, and get movin! Our popular Adult Social League is back with kickball starting up this month. Sign up online at Schertz.com and we’ll place you on a team.
We’ve got some exciting park development projects happening this spring that should be completed in time to enjoy this summer. We’re adding a playscape feature and a picnic pavilion available for birthday party reservations at Ashley Park. We’re also converting the small pool at Wendy Swan Memorial Park into a small splash pad feature! Both projects are expected to be completed in June.
The first section of the Great Northern Trail is substantially complete, and contractors are working on punch list items. We look forward to hosting a grand opening event soon as we continue to work on adding trail sections in the city.
Finally, July is National Park & Recreation Month, and we’ll be celebrating by hosting two Float & Flicks at Pickrell Pool and every Thursday night in July, we’ll have a fun event in the park, such as Pup-sicles in the Park, Tactical Laser Tag, Pickleball Play, and a Glow Party in the Park. Be sure to follow Schertz Parks and Recreation on social media for more details about our month-long celebration!
We hope you have FUN exploring everything your Schertz Parks & Recreation Department has to offer!
Lauren Shrum, Director of Parks & Recreation

GUADALUPE COUNTY MASTER NATURALISTS
The mission of the Texas Master Naturalist program is to develop a corps of well-informed volunteers to provide education, outreach, and service dedicated to the beneficial management of natural resources and natural areas within their communities. The Guadalupe chapter serves the Guadalupe County area, including numerous projects in Seguin as well as Schertz. The group sponsors the Nature Discovery Series held at Crescent Bend Nature Park and has plans to help with invasive species removal and citizen science projects like bird counts and water quality monitoring of Cibolo Creek. If you’re interested in joining the Master Naturalists and their work at Crescent Bend Nature Park, see their website at txmn.org/guadalupe.
CRESCENT BEND NATURE PARK – SCOUT CAMPGROUND RENTAL
Are you and your scout troop looking for a camp site to host your next adventure? A great local campground is at our very own Crescent Bend Nature Park. This area includes a fire pit, 4 picnic tables and mulch tent pads for camping that can host up to 40 campers. APRIL 29
–
The City Nature Challenge is an international effort for people to find and document plants and wildlife in cities across the globe. There is nature all around us, even in our cities! Knowing what species are in our city and where they are, helps us study and protect them, but the ONLY way to do that is by all of us – scientists, land managers, and the community – working together to find and document the nature in our area. By participating in the City Nature Challenge, not only do you learn more about your local nature, but you can also make your city a better place – for you and other species!

EAGLE SCOUT PROJECT OPPORTUNITIES
The Park and Recreation Department partners with Eagle Scout candidates on many different projects. These projects not only help better our local community but also teach our scouts about project management, leadership, community service and other useful development skills. In years past, the scouts have created sanitation stations, built fences and created Project Flag Line for Schertz Parkway in preparation for the annual Fourth of July Jubilee. For further information, please email parksandrec@schertz. com or call the Parks Department at (210) 619-1850.

PARK DEVELOPMENT
The City of Schertz strives to continue developing the areas around the City with more beautiful parks and facilities. With the growth of the City's population, the Parks & Recreation Department has many future projects.
SCHERTZ SOCCER COMPLEX IRRIGATION STORAGE UPGRADES
The current irrigation storage at the Schertz Soccer Complex is inadequate for the needs of the complex. An upgrade to storage capacity and the well pump is in design phase with construction estimated to start in mid-summer. The project includes increased storage capacity above ground level, a new submersible well pump, new well casing, and electrical upgrades.
ASHLEY PARK PHASE 3 IMPROVEMENTS
UNDER CONSTRUCTION! In 2019, city staff completed Phase I of the renovation project at Ashley Park which included reconstructing the basketball court, replacing playground equipment, a cosmetic update to the restroom facility, and providing an accessible route to the new features. The existing asphalt loop trail was not replaced at that time due to limited funding.
Phase II of the renovation included demolition of the existing failing asphalt trail and reconstruction of a concrete loop trail in its place that is fully ADA accessible, and extends the accessible route to the restroom, the toddler playscape, and to one picnic area. Phase III of the Ashley Park renovation includes an additional playscape feature and a picnic pavilion available for party reservations which is scheduled for construction this spring.
PARK DEVELOPMENT City of Schertz Parks & Recreation SPRING / SUMMER 2022 24
HILLTOP/HOMESTEAD PARK CONCEPTUAL PLAN
City staff is still working on this project and developing funding options for construction. A grant application was submitted in October 2021 and the project was not selected for funding at this time. City staff continues to look for other grant opportunities and will revise our proposal and resubmit the project in the next funding cycle. Early conceptual plans call for a hilltop overlook/ observation platform, a fishing pond with pier, walking trails, mountain-biking trails, nature-based playscape, picnic pavilions, restrooms, and interpretive signage. Construction date still TBD.
VETERAN’S MEMORIAL PLAZA LANDSCAPE RENOVATION
COMPLETED! New landscaping beds were added in a symmetrical ring around the plaza and feature various types of roses to give the plaza a more formal look. Limestone blocks and earthen berms were used to create an amphitheatereffect two-tier seating area on both sides of the plaza. An accessible sidewalk was constructed from the back of the plaza to the parking area at the Aquatic Center and an accessible parking spot was created adjacent to two Purple Heart Recipient parking spaces. Pavers are now available to purchase online at schertz.com and are installed twice a year in March and September.
WENDY SWAN MEMORIAL PARK SPLASH PAD
COMING SOON! City council has approved the permanent closure of the small pool at Wendy Swan Memorial Park and its conversion to a small splash pad feature. With a splash pad, a longer operating season is possible and it can be open from March – October versus the traditional summer season (Memorial Day – August). The cost savings from staffing the pool will be used to pay back the reserves for the construction of the splash pad and the existing pool filtration systems is being utilized for the splash pad, resulting in further savings. Construction is estimated to start in late April and the project will take about 6-8 weeks. Stay tuned for information on the Grand Opening Celebration later this summer!

TRAIL DEVELOPMENT
City staff is working on expanding the trail network in Schertz and with that comes the development of a trail branding program. The Schertz Trails logo, trail mile-marker signage, and trail maps will all be developed as we add more trail networks to the system. Long-range plans include the Cibolo Creek Trail, Dry Comal Creek Trail, and the Woman Hollering Creek Trail. Stay tuned to Schertz.com for more information on these exciting projects.
SCHERTZ PEDESTRIAN ROUTES & BIKE LANES PROJECT, CITY-WIDE
SUBSTANTIALLY COMPLETE! This project added sidewalks along both sides of Live Oak Road from Schertz Parkway to FM 3009. The project also included bike lanes and proper signage along both sides of Savannah Drive and Woodland Oaks Drive for the many school children who bike to Paschal Elementary and Wilder Intermediate. The last part of the project included a decomposed granite trail from Schertz Parkway to Wiederstein Road (which is the 1st section of The Great Northern Trail) and pedestrian crossing improvements at Wiederstein Road to connect to Forest Ridge Park. The contractor is working on punch list items now and the pedestrian crossing system is not yet activated.

THE GREAT NORTHERN TRAILFIRST SECTION
COMPLETED! Grand Opening Celebration coming soon!
THE GREAT NORTHERN TRAILSECOND SECTION AT FM 1103
City staff has secured a trail easement from Cibolo Valley Baptist Church to construct an approximately 0.2 mile section of trail. Construction is set to begin this spring with the work only taking a few weeks. This section will eventually connect to the FM 1103 pedestrian improvements that TxDOT is planning along with the roadway improvements. TxDOT is planning to start construction on FM 1103 this summer.
THE GRE AT NORTHERN TR AIL
THE GREAT SPRINGS PROJECT
City staff is very excited to be working with the staff at The Great Springs Project to help further their mission of a regional trail system connecting four of Texas’ Great Springs: Barton Springs, San Marcos Springs, Comal Springs, and San Antonio Springs. The goal is to create a green corridor and trail network from the Alamo to the Capitol. Schertz’ trail plans for The Great Northern Trail, the Dry Comal Creek Trail, and the Cibolo Creek Trail are important connecting pieces in this greater regional trail network. City staff recently hosted a Trail Connect meeting where a group of staff from the cities of Schertz, Cibolo, Selma, Universal City, Garden Ridge, and New Braunfels shared trail plans and discussed future connections between the cities. Stay tuned for more good trail news to come!

FROM THE LIBRARY DIRECTOR
This FUN Guide should be reaching you at the beginning of April, just in time for National Library Week, April 3-9. First sponsored by the American Library Association in 1958, National Library Week is a time set aside to celebrate our nation’s libraries, library workers’ contributions to their communities, and promote library use and support. This year’s theme, “Connect with Your Library” encourages you to connect to technology, media, programs, classes, and all the other various resources we offer in addition to books. The theme is also a call to action—an invitation for community members to join, visit, or advocate for their local libraries. Most importantly, it’s a reminder that libraries connect people—to ideas, to each other’s stories, and the world at large.
Melissa Uhlhorn, Library Director
