The folks over at Burton have been designing innovative boards for three decades, trying to produce smaller, yet still top-notch performance boards. Their latest feat, the Super Hero, takes a jab at the tired saying that a good board’s length should come close to its owner’s chin. To build this 1.5m toy, weight and materials have been reduced, but the board still packs a serious performance punch thanks to its finetuned geometry and new Flat Top technology, which ensures you’ll keep your balance no matter what obstacles lay ahead.
De mensen van Burton Snowboards ontwerpen al dertig jaar lang vernieuwende snowboards. Ze proberen kleinere boards te produceren die nog steeds uitstekend functioneren. Burton’s laatste ontwerp, de Super Hero, haalt uit naar de afgezaagde uitspraak dat een goed board tot de eigenaars kin zou moeten komen. This snow extravaganza isn’t your average theatre experience, and it’s all the better for it. Led by arguably the best clown in the world, Russian Slava Polunin, the eponymous Slava’s Snow Show has toured the world multiple times, including successful stints on Broadway. After a 15-year absence from the London stage, the masterpiece will return to London for a three-week season that ends on 8 January. If you feel like letting your inner child run wild, then hop on the next direct flight to the British capital, just an hour away from Schiphol. 8

A 12th-century dairy farming village in France is the setting for one of the best winter experiences out there. Les Gets has 650km of slopes that make up the Portes du Soleil ski domain, one of the largest in the world, spanning 15 stations in two countries. There’s no need to worry about accommodation as there are dozens of chalets, apartments, hotels, B&Bs and camping spots in the region. In case you feel like celebrating, each month there’s a special event in store: in February you can dine in a romantic télécabine high above the lit-up village, and in March you can watch some of the best riders take to the slopes in the Ebouelle Contest and then let loose at the Rock the Pistes international pop-rock festival.

Een twaalfde-eeuws melkveedorp in Frankrijk is de setting voor een van de beste bestaande winterervaringen. The Sapporo Snow Festival in Japan’s fourth largest city draws about two million visitors each year. For a week in February, the Odori Park becomes the city’s main attraction, with scores of impressive snow and ice sculptures dotted around. Meanwhile, at the Sapporo Tsudome, you can check out what winter feels like in Hokkaido and storm down snow slides or get lost in mazes. If you can’t get enough of the ice sculptures, the Susukino site features some designs with real crabs, squid and salmon. Sushi, anyone?

Het Sneeuwfestival in Japans vijfde grootste stad Sapporo trekt ieder jaar ongeveer twee miljoen bezoekers. Voor één week in februari is het Odori Park dan de grootste trekpleister van de stad, en staat vol met tientallen indrukwekkende beelden gemaakt van sneeuw en ijs. If there’s one winter memory from childhood that outshines the rest – it’s got to be trying to build an igloo with your friends. While we’re sure you constructed a pretty nifty fort back in the day, the SnowCastle of Kemi in the Gulf of Bothnia in Finland takes igloo design to a stratospheric new level. It takes local constructors five weeks to build the castle, using pipes to make snow out of sea water, which creates a much stronger type of snow. The 2012 edition opens its doors on 28 January and will welcome you with not just cosy rooms, but also a fully functioning restaurant, chapel, snow-tube slide and a merry-go-round. Als er één winterherinnering van de kindertijd is die de rest overtreft, dan is het wel die van het bouwen van een iglo met je vrienden. Hoewel we er zeker van zijn dat je vroeger een behoorlijk mooi fort hebt gebouwd, brengt het SnowCastle in Kemi (Botnische Golf, Finland) het igloontwerp wel naar een erg stratosferisch niveau: het kost de lokale makers vijf weken om het kasteel te bouwen. Amy Winehouse’s highly anticipated posthumous album Lioness: Hidden Treasures is a collection of 12 tracks that range from alternate takes and rare songs to unreleased tracks. It was supposed to fill the void of her departure, but instead serves as a stark reminder of Amy’s squandered talents. Gem ‘Our Day Will Come’ is classically nostalgic just as ‘Between the Cheats’ is as cheeky as she often was. ‘Body and Soul’ is a rich and poignant duet featuring Tony Bennett with grippingly worn vocals. The remainder of the misnomer sadly only hints at what Amy could have been and all too often ends up sounding familiar, but sadly unfinished.
Sex sells and Rihanna is a pro when it comes to peddling records. The theme of RiRi’s 6th album, Talk That Talk, is sexiness and does best when it sticks to synth-heavy dance-pop. ‘We Found Love’ featuring Calvin Harris proves the power of repetition works and beckons you to a dance floor nearby. It’s through the myriad of different musical influences, however, that the record is clouded. Metallica and Chase & Status awkwardly rub shoulders with The xx and Jay Z, and melancholic ballads high five R&B anthems resulting in a scattered end-product that doesn’t live up to Rihanna’s past albums.
Singer songwriter Taio Cruz is back with TY.O, a title born out of resentment with the mispronunciation of his name. The star-studded 11-strong record features the likes of Flo Rida on the bouncy anthem ‘Hangover’ and Ludacris and Guetta on the electrifying ‘Little Bad Girl’. With its finger on the pulse of current dance-pop, the influence of producers like Steve Angello and Dr. Luke doesn’t go unnoticed. Only six months after his sophomore record it’s foolish to expect anything groundbreaking, but much like a long island ice tea: it’s nothing new, annoyingly addictive, but sure to make you drink more and dance harder.

The last moment of the track ‘A Song for You’ on Amy’s Lioness: Hidden Treasures features a short recording of Amy where she says: ‘Donny Hathaway like… he couldn’t contain himself. He had something in him, you know.’ The legendary soul singer was one of Amy’s major influences and is referred to on her hit record Rehab about despair and alcoholism. Cullen Bohannon is a violent, gritty and classically Western man. This renegade sinner is a southern soldier who, in post Civil War America, seeks vengeance on the northern killers of his wife in AMC’s new Hell on Wheels. Corruption, boozing and prostitution are staples of the morally bankrupt town home to the Union Pacific Railroad workers Cullen is forced to join. While the first transcontinental railroad is being built, tensions between natives, ex-slaves and a divided America bubble to the surface. The show occasionally veers off track, but what remains after the first five episodes is a beautifully made portrait of a turbulent, but riveting time.
The Gallagher family has hopped the pond from their council estate in Manchester to the burbs of Chi-Town for Showtime’s remake of Channel 4’s Shameless. The dramedy follows a family of almost-orphans left to fend for themselves by their alcoholic father Frank (William H. Macy). The show is at its best when it allows the characters to experience liberation through deprivation and as such has them deal with sex, race and class relations in an enviably cavalier manner. Gritty urban realism and a dollop of black humour are what make this show honest, obtrusive and unapologetically shameless.
The fourth season of Californication continues in the glamorous L.A ditch that Hank Moody - part addict, part writer and two parts asshole - fell asleep in last season. The show salutes rock bottom and winks at success by treading a tightrope between melodrama and slapstick. Mouthy, cable-only dialogue is the show’s forte and season four returns with wit cocked and lexical punches packed. Unfortunately the show sometimes relies too much on vague boobs-out misogyny. Hank’s tenacious ignorance for simple cause and effect also makes it hard to sympathise. Californication remains, however, cleverly written and well acted entertainment.

De serie is op zijn best wanneer het de personages op een benijdenswaardig nonchalante manier om laat gaan met seks, ras en klassenverhoudingen. Resoluut stedelijk realisme en een scheutje zwarte humor maken deze serie oprecht, opvallend en shameless.
Het vierde seizoen van Californication zet zich voort in de aanlokkelijke goot van Los Angeles, waar Hank Moody – één deel verslaafde, één deel schrijver en twee delen klootzak – in het laatste seizoen in slaap viel. De serie verwelkomt het dieptepunt en knipoogt naar succes door heen en weer te dansen tussen melodrama en grove humor. Seizoen vier keert terug met gespitste humor en rake lexicale klappen. Helaas rekent de serie soms te veel op vage ‘boobs-out’ vrouwenhaat. Californication blijft echter slim geschreven en goed geacteerd amusement.

‘I just got back from a month-long trip visiting a friend in St. Petersburg, Russia. My flight was cancelled due to bad weather so I have ten hours to kill here. St. Petersburg was very cold, but also beautiful. The architecture was especially amazing. My most memorable moment was climbing to the top of St. Isaac’s Cathedral where you can get a view of the entire city. Three hundred steps are very difficult to climb if you’re a heavy smoker!’

THE BEDROOM IS STRANGE. Unfamiliar. I don’t know where I am, how I came to be here. I don’t know how I’m going to get home. I have spent the night here. I was woken by a woman’s voice – at first I thought she was in bed with me, but then realized she was reading the news and I was hearing a radio alarm – and when I opened my eyes I found myself here. In this room I don’t recognize. My eyes adjust and I look around in the near dark. A dressing gown hangs off the back of the wardrobe door – suitable for a woman, but someone much older than I am – and some dark-coloured trousers are folded neatly over the back of a chair at the dressing table, but I can make out little else. The alarm clock looks complicated, but I find a button and manage to silence it. It is then that I hear a juddering intake of breath behind me and realize I am not alone. I turn round. I see an expanse of skin and dark hair, flecked with white. A man. He has his left arm outside the covers and there is a gold band on the third finger of the hand. I suppress a groan. So this one is not only old and grey, I think, but also married. Not only have I screwed a married man, but I have done so in what I am guessing is his home, in the bed he must usually share with his wife. I lie back to gather myself. I ought to be ashamed. I wonder where the wife is. Do I need to worry about her arriving back at any moment? I 24

imagine her standing on the other side of the room, screaming, calling me a slut. A medusa. A mass of snakes. I wonder how I will defend myself, if she does appear. The guy in the bed doesn’t seem concerned, though. He has turned over and snores on. I lie as still as possible. Usually I can remember how I get into situations like this, but not today. There must have been a party, or a trip to a bar or a club. I must have been pretty wasted. Wasted enough that I don’t remember anything at all. Wasted enough to have gone home with a man with a wedding ring and hairs on his back. I fold back the covers as gently as I can and sit on the edge of the bed. First, I need to use the bathroom. I ignore the slippers at my feet – after all, fucking the husband is one thing, but I could never wear another woman’s shoes – and creep barefoot on to the landing. I am aware of my nakedness, fearful of choosing the wrong door, of stumbling on a lodger, a teenage son. Relieved, I see the bathroom door is ajar and go in, locking it behind me. I sit, use the toilet, then flush it and turn to wash my hands. I reach for the soap, but something is wrong. At first I can’t work out what it is, but then I see it. The hand gripping the soap does not look like mine. The skin is wrinkled, the nails are unpolished and bitten to the quick and, like the man in the bed I have just left, the third finger wears a plain, gold wedding ring. I stare for a moment, then wiggle my fingers. The fingers of the hand holding the soap move also. I gasp, and the soap thuds into the sink. I look up at the mirror. The face I see looking back at me is not my own. The hair has no volume and is cut much shorter than I wear it, the skin on the cheeks and under the chin sags, the lips are thin, the mouth turned down. I cry out, a wordless gasp that would turn into a shriek of shock were I to let it, and then notice the eyes. The skin around them is lined, yes, but despite everything else I can see that they are mine. The person in the mirror is me, but I am twenty years too old. Twenty-five. More.
This isn’t possible. Beginning to shake, I grip the edge of the sink. Another scream starts to rise in my chest and this one erupts as a strangled gasp. I step back, away from the mirror, and it is then that I see them. Photographs. Taped to the wall, to the mirror itself. Pictures, interspersed with yellow pieces of gummed paper, felt-tip notes, damp and curling. I choose one at random. Christine, it says, and an arrow points to a photograph of me – this new me, this old me – in which I am sitting on a bench on a quayside, next to a man. The name seems familiar, but only distantly so, as if I am having to make an effort to believe that it is mine. In the photograph we are both smiling at the camera, holding hands. He is handsome, attractive, and when I look closely I can see that it is the same man I slept with, the one I left in the bed. The word Ben is written beneath it, and next to it Your husband. I gasp, and rip it off the wall. No, I think. No! It can’t be ...I scan the rest of the pictures. They are all of me, and him. In one I am wearing an ugly dress and unwrapping a present, in another both of us wear matching weatherproof jackets and stand in front of a waterfall as a small dog sniffs at our feet. Next to it is a picture of me sitting beside him, sipping a glass of orange juice, wearing the dressing gown I have seen in the bedroom next door. I step back further, until I feel cold tiles against my back. It is then I get the glimmer that I associate with memory. As my mind tries to settle on it, it flutters away, like ashes caught in a breeze, and I realize that in my life there is a then, a before, though before what I cannot say, and there is a now, and there is nothing between the two but a long, silent emptiness that has led me here, to me and him, in this house.

A mere three hour flight from Amsterdam, Moscow is closer than you think. Immerse yourself in a mesmerising metropolis caught between Europe and the former Soviet-Union.

December had just started and it was already minus two degrees celsius, the drizzly wet snow a sure sign of what laid ahead. Each year, winter takes the Russian capital in a stranglehold with temperatures easily dropping to 25 below zero. Come back in July and you may experience a blistering heatwave. Yes, Moscow is a city defined by incredible extremes of which its climate is but one example. On our dark drive from the airport, chauffeur Dimitri took a detour trying to beat Moscow’s notorious traffic jams. Every Friday afternoon, hundreds of thousands of people head for their family mansions outside of town while others come to the city to party their weekend away. We crossed several villages consisting entirely of one-storey buildings before finally catching a glimpse of stereotypical suburban Russia in the 21st century: concrete apartment blocks from the 1960s mingling with shiny shopping centers that popped up everywhere after the

fall of Communism in 1991. And then, suddenly, solid Soviet structures appeared, unmoved by any type of weather. We had arrived. RED SQUARE Being a proud history nerd, I was anxious to see Red Square, the setting of two of the 20th century’s most significant military parades. In 1941, Soviet troops left the square with much fanfare for a decisive battle against the Germans, who came very close to conquering Moscow in those days. Four years later, Joseph Stalin ordered the famous 1945 Victory Parade, celebrating the defeat of Germany by throwing Nazi banners at Lenin’s Mausoleum. Today, the Mausoleum is one of the city’s top attractions. People come from all over the world to admire the embalmed body of the founder of the Soviet Union. It’s a sight that contrasts sharply with the rest of the square, which hosts pop concerts in summer and features an ice-skating rank in winter. But things get even weirder. Right across the mausoleum stands the GUM, a monumental mall offering expensive western brand clothing. If Lenin only knew... Towards the south end of the square, I saw a man sitting on a folding chair, looking very depressed indeed. Sadly, no one wanted to have his or her picture taken in front of Saint Basil’s Cathedral, the officious symbol of Moscow and Russia as a whole. Depending on your taste, this extravagant Orthodox church is either the most beautiful or most ugly structure in the city. The jobless photographer seemed long past the point of caring about aesthetics. It could be hours before he made some money in this drowsy, windy weather. МАКДОНАЛДС Moscow is not an easy city to travel around. Signposts are rarely bilingual and the locals hardly speak a word of English. Even ‘McDonald’s’, one of the most recognisable brand names in the world, was translated when

If the employee understands your order. That may sound off-putting, but there’s something strangely alluring about a city still capable of making you feel like you’ve come to a whole other world. One that is clearly stuck 28

RODE PLEIN Als trotse geschiedenisnerd wilde ik graag het Rode Plein zien, decor van twee beroemde militaire parades uit de 20ste eeuw. In 1941 verlieten Sovjettroepen het plein met veel bombarie voor een beslissende slag tegen de Duitsers, die Moskou op een haar na veroverden. Vier jaar later hield Stalin de overwinningsparade van 1945 op het Rode Plein. Soldaten vierden hun triomf door Nazivlaggen als trofeeën op Lenins mausoleum te werpen. Tegenwoordig is het mausoleum één van Moskou’s topattracties. Vanuit de hele wereld komen mensen naar de stad om het gebalsemde lichaam van de oprichter van de Sovjet-Unie te bewonderen. Het mausoleum vloekt nogal met de rest van het plein, dat in de zomer gebruikt wordt voor popconcerten en waar in de winter een ijsbaan staat. Maar het kan nog gekker. Recht tegenover het mausoleum vind je GUM, een monumentaal winkelcentrum waar je dure westerse merkkleding vindt. Lenin moest eens weten... Toen ik naar de zuidkant van het plein liep, zag ik een man op een klapstoel zitten die behoorlijk ongelukkig uit zijn ogen keek. Niemand wilde door hem gefotografeerd worden met de Pokrovkathedraal, het officieuze symbool van Moskou en Rusland als geheel. Afhankelijk van je smaak is deze extravagante Orthodoxe kathedraal het mooiste óf het lelijkste gebouw van de stad. Maar de werkloze fotograaf leek zich al lang niet meer druk te maken om trivialiteiten als smaak. In dit groezelige, winderige weer zou het nog uren kunnen duren voor hij een paar roebels verdiende. МАКДОНАЛДС Moskou is geen gemakkelijke stad voor een toerist. Plattegronden en bewegwijzering op straat zijn zelden tweetalig en de lokale bevolking spreekt nauwelijks Engels. Zelfs ‘McDonald’s’, één van de meest herkenbare merknamen ter wereld, werd vertaald toen de fastfoodketen twintig jaar geleden de Russische markt betrad. Hier koop je je hamburger bij Макдоналдс. Als de werknemers je bestelling begrijpen tenminste. Dat klinkt misschien ontmoedigend, maar het heeft iets bijzonder aantrekkelijks om een stad te bezoeken waar je het gevoel krijgt in een heel andere wereld rond te lopen. Moskou zit duidelijk gevangen tussen twee universums. De grote neonletters op veel Sovjetgebouwen voelen misplaatst, alsof Stalin zelf elk moment uit de dood op kan staan om die afschuwelijke symbolen van kapitalisme te vernietigen.
Russian winters are the stuff of legend. Both Napoleon Bonaparte and Adolf Hitler tried to conquer the country, but had to withdraw their heavily weakened armies because the cold made it impossible to keep fighting. If it wasn’t for the extreme climate, Moscow would probably look very different right now... On average, Moscow sees 144 days of snowfall a year. But you’d be sorely mistaken if you think Russians allow the elements to dictate their everyday life. They’re Russians! From 15 October through to the end of March a committee of experts meets daily to discuss the weather reports and decide on necessary actions. No less than 50,000 workers and 15,000 snow ploughs are employed to keep the city up and running in decimeters of white terror.
WINTER IN MOSKOU Russische winters zijn legendarisch. Zowel Napoleon Bonaparte als Adolf Hitler probeerden het land te veroveren, maar moesten hun hevig verzwakte legers terugtrekken omdat de kou het onmogelijk maakte om door te vechten. In een milder klimaat zou Moskou er nu waarschijnlijk heel anders uitzien. Gemiddeld sneeuwt het 144 dagen per jaar in Moskou. Maar als je denkt dat Russen hun leven laten beheersen door de elementen heb je het mis. Het zijn Russen! Van 15 oktober tot eind maart komt een comité van experts dagelijks bij elkaar om het weerbericht te bespreken en de noodzakelijke maatregelen te treffen. Liefst 50.000 arbeiders en 15.000 sneeuwploegen staan gereed om de stad begaanbaar te houden.

CITY BREAK EXTREME MEASURES Even though Moscow is far more efficient (and experienced) in dealing with harsh winter conditions than say London or Amsterdam, the Russians are always on the lookout for more effective measures to beat the cold. In 2009, Mayor Joeri Loezjkov proposed to have army jets inject snowheavy clouds with a liquid that makes them drop their flakes before they reach the city. As you can imagine, inhabitants of nearby farmer villages were none too pleased about the prospect of having their land covered with snow meant for the capital. Loezjkov has since resigned and his plans were put on hold. They weren’t that unrealistic though. Whenever a big parade is planned in Moscow, jets already spray rain clouds with liquid nitrogen to keep perspiration at bay. Could be a health hazard, but what the hell, right? In SovietRussia, health ruins you. EXTREME MAATREGELEN Al gaat Moskou veel efficiënter om met winterweer dan bijvoorbeeld Londen of Amsterdam, toch zijn de Russen altijd op zoek naar nog effectievere maatregelen om de kou te bestrijden. In 2009 stelde burgemeester Joeri Loezjkov voor om sneeuwwolken door legervliegtuigen te laten injecteren met een chemisch goedje waardoor ze hun vlokken laten vallen voor ze Moskou bereiken. Je kunt je voorstellen dat de bewoners van omringende boerendorpjes niet zo blij waren met het idee dat voor de hoofdstad bestemde sneeuw op hun land terecht zou komen... Loezjkov is inmiddels afgetreden en zijn plannen werden in de ijskast gezet. Toch waren ze helemaal niet zo onrealistisch. Als er een grote parade gepland staat in Moskou worden regenwolken nu al besprenkeld met vloeibare stikstof om de neerslag op afstand te houden. between universes. The large neon signs attached to many old buildings seem out of place, as if Stalin himself might show up at any moment to tear down those awful displays of capitalism. Again, that’s mostly appealing. Moscow is very much alive, its current ambivalent incarnation as interesting as the city’s turbulent past. Stay in a luxury hotel and you may find yourself having breakfast while a lady in evening gown plays the harp. Visit Soho Rooms, the current nightlife hotspot, and you’ll see beautiful, near-naked girls dancing on a bar. Just don’t be surprised if you also catch an elderly museum guard downing a sneaky sip of vodka when he thinks no-one is looking. THE MOSCOW KREMLIN Adjacent to Red Square, the Moscow Kremlin is, of course, the fortified historical city center with its government buildings, palaces and cathedrals. Oddly enough there doesn’t seem to be a whole lot of security around president Medvedev’s office. I could get pretty close to the building with only two guards in sight, although my guide Olga assured me I would be ‘in intense pain’ the moment I tried to cross the street. With Olga I could never really tell whether she was joking or not, so I settled for a picture.

KREMLIN VAN MOSKOU Het Kremlin van Moskou, dat grenst aan het Rode Plein, is het versterkte historische centrum van de stad met zijn overheidsgebouwen, paleizen en kathedralen. Gek genoeg lijkt er weinig beveiliging te zijn rond het kantoor van president Medvedev. Crossing streets inside the Kremlin, even the ones you’re allowed to, is an unnerving experience anyway. The whole place was almost empty when I visited, but ignoring the manned zebra crossings is not recommended. At any moment, a limousine carrying Medvedev and company can come cruising by at 200 kilometres an hour and if it does, the chauffeur is probably not very concerned with saving tourists’ lives. The Kremlin alone can keep you busy for at least a day. Even if you’re not a big museum lover, the Armoury is worth checking out for the gorgeous displays of royal wedding dresses and carriages. Apparently I came too close to one of them, because a hidden loudspeaker creaked to life and a very pissed-off sounding voice warned me to back off. ‘KGB is watching you!’, Olga chuckled. That woman... CITY OF ELEGANCE Some people think of Moscow as a gritty city but there is also a very elegant side to it. Art

Zelfs als je niet zo van de musea bent, is de Wapenkamer bijvoorbeeld de moeite waard vanwege de prachtige koninklijke bruidsjurken en koetsen. lovers will have a blast inside world-class galleries like the State Tretyakov, which houses an impressive collection of 20th century Russian paintings. Sure, the typical socialist images of strong men and women looking after their farms are present, but you can also find works of avant-garde artists such as Malevich and Popova in the Tretyakov. The Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts, on the other hand, focuses on foreign art from ancient times to modern day. The lines can be horrific, though Russians themselves don’t seem to be too interested in the 19th and 20th century collections housed in a separate building. I’d consider focusing on those if you’re short on time, because the Pushkin’s selection of European Impressionist paintings gives the Orsay in Paris a run for its money. Like the performing arts better? You’re in luck because the famous Bolshoi Theater recently reopened after an extensive six-year, 500 million euro renovation. Money well-spent, because it is positively stunning. The theater was in serious danger of collapsing before the overhaul, but now it’s grand enough to make you feel guilty for wearing jeans. To give you some idea: the walls are covered with handmade linen. The perfect atmosphere for an evening of opera or ballet.

COMMUNISM VS. CAPITALISM It’s not just the sights, though. Moscow has the most lushly decorated metro system in the world. Stalin ordered architects to design subway stations that would make the working class feel like royalty. The subway was constructed as a temple for the masses and a propaganda machine for Stalin at the same time.

Communism is still very visible all through the city and while the majority of westerners think of it as an evil ideology, some Russians would go back to the Soviet-Union in a heartbeat. Twenty years of wary democracy hasn’t convinced them. What good are nice clothes if you’re unemployed and can hardly put food on the table? For others, younger generations in particular, capitalism has opened up a lot of new possibilities. The tension between those two camps is tangible in Moscow’s streets and makes the city truly unique. Go now before it changes.

I travel a lot so it only took me about two hours to pack this big suitcase. I packed lighter winter clothes since its warmer where I’m going and formal dresses for the wedding. Most of my suitcase is filled with gifts though.

“Are you from Holland? My grandparents can still speak Dutch!” says the man who pushes our backpacks on the luggage belt at Bali’s airport. Fortunately he has no hard feelings about my colonial roots in his country. I’m headed for the deep turquoise water of Nusa Tenggara, dotted with little islands and surrounded by white strips of sand. The beautiful islands of Lombok, Flores, Sumbawa, Sumba and West-Timor form the Nusa Tenggara, and encompass a wide variety of culture, wildlife, beaches and underwater worlds

CATHOLICS AND MUEZZINS The port of Labuan Bajo, the capital of West Flores, is the launching point for boat tours to nearby Komodo and Rinca Island, the best place to spot rare and unique Komodo dragons. Walking through Labuan Bajo reveals a mix of different cultures. Originally Catholic by its Portuguese roots, the Islamic muezzin who leads the call to prayer is a clear example of Muslim life on the island. The port town used to be a sleepy fishing village, but today it’s crowded with boat trip companies. The main street still holds its romantic charm, with its old buildings and fresh seafood restaurants.

BANANA PANCAKES The following day the boat adventure begins. The crew of three men welcome me aboard as I jump on a local fishing boat, ominously called ‘The Armada’ (a Spanish/Portuguese word meaning ‘armed’). We set sail for Rinca Island, which is surrounded by the mountainous landscape of Flores and other smaller islands. Rinca is not far from Flores and the easiest way to spot the Komodo dragon. Near the entrance to the park you can spot these deadly reptiles with teeth similar to those of great white sharks. It’s not as good as spotting them in the wild, but it provides a good introduction to the Island’s famous dragon. The boat crew cook delicious fresh banana pancakes and nasi campur (mixed rice). After lunch we have our first snorkelling stop, which is an instant success. After just 15 minutes we see a giant turtle, a reef shark and a huge manta ray. Back on board the crew carry mattresses onto the deck along with some pillows. Watching the sun set on the horizon from the deck of a local fishing boat is an amazing experience. TRAPPED After sunset we have dinner at our anchorage, somewhere near a bat cave. The crew make our deck beds ready for the night. The next morning our captain drops us off at Komodo Island for our four-hour-long hike. Our guide is a small guy armed with only a long, thin stick

to protect us against possible dragon attacks. “Last year a little boy from the village got bitten,” he says as we start to sweat climbing the slippery hills. We pass a forest where we spot the first dragon. The greenish lizard is around three metres in length and is the largest reptile on earth. “He died within minutes after being bitten,” continues the guide. Not much later he loses radio contact with basecamp. “Contact, contact”, he repeats in vain. We come across a memorial for someone who disappeared on the island in the seventies and begin to feel a little uncomfortable.

We passeren een woud waar we onze eerste draak spotten. De groenachtige varaan is ongeveer drie meter lang en is het grootste reptiel op aarde. “Hij stierf binnen een paar minuten nadat hij gebeten was,” vertelt de gids verder. Niet veel later verliest hij radiocontact met het basiskamp. “Contact, contact,” herhaalt hij tevergeefs. We komen langs een monument voor iemand die in de jaren zeventig van het eiland verdween, en ik begin me een beetje ongemakkelijk te voelen.

He hands us his guardian stick while he starts searching. “I think we got lost,” he whispers, appearing distressed when he returns. Since it’s Ramadan he is less alert than usual, he explains. There’s no other option than to fight our way through the thick bush. First our guide asks Allah for forgiveness and then takes a big sip of our bottle of water. We begin to push through the forest as sticks and leaves beat on our faces. Just when I begin developing claustrophobia at the idea of being lost on an island with 1200 dragons, our guide finds the way. He thanks Allah by falling to the ground and raising his arms. A few hours later we arrive at our boat. Our guide decides to have a ‘Ramadan day off’ after so much commotion and joins us for lunch. We are delighted to arrive on bounty island Kanawa later that day. It is a breath-taking white-sand beach surrounded by starfish, octopus and turtles that swim near the shore. After an exciting day we watch the stunning sunset with a beer on the beach. Hiking on Komodo Island can be a real adventure in more ways than one; you can also opt for a shorter hike or alternatively avoid Ramadan. Taking a boat trip to these islands is a priceless expedition into the wild parts of this mysterious and beautiful region. 42

Hij geeft ons zijn bewakersstok terwijl hij begint te zoeken. “Ik denk dat we verdwaald zijn,” fluistert hij bij terugkomst, en hij lijkt van streek. Omdat het ramadan is, is hij minder alert dan normaal, legt hij uit. Er is geen andere optie dan om onze weg terug door de dichte bossen te vechten. Eerst vraagt de gids Allah om vergiffenis en dan neemt hij een grote slok van onze fles water. We banen ons langzaam een weg door het woud terwijl takken en bladeren tegen onze gezichten slaan. Net als ik claustrofobisch begin te worden van het idee verdwaald te zijn op een
eiland met 1200 varanen, vindt onze gids de weg weer terug. Hij valt op de grond en dankt Allah met zijn armen in de lucht. Een paar uur later arriveren we bij de boot. Onze gids besluit om een ‘ramadanvrije dag’ te nemen na zoveel commotie, en luncht met ons mee. We zijn erg opgetogen als we later die dag eindelijk arriveren op bounty island Kanawa. Het is een adembenemend wit strand omringd door zeesterren, octopussen en schildpadden die dicht langs de kust zwemmen. Na een opwindende dag bekijken we de prachtige zonsondergang vanaf het strand met een biertje in onze hand. Een trektocht op Komodo Island kan een behoorlijk avontuur zijn, op meer dan één manier. Je kunt ook kiezen voor een kortere trektocht of anders gewoon de ramadan vermijden. Een boottocht langs deze eilanden is een onbetaalbare expeditie naar de wilde gedeelten van dit mysterieuze en prachtige gebied.

Patchett’s fifth novel could be called an elegant cross between The Heart of Darkness and The Island of Doctor Moreau: a tale that brings together the darkness of the jungle and the even murkier boundaries of (medical) science. Marina Singh is a 42-yearold researcher at a Minnesota pharmaceutical company who stumbles reluctantly into adventure when her lab partner Anders Eckman seems to have died in the Brazilian Amazon. Anders is on a mission that she now has to complete: to find Doctor Annick Swenson, who’s been working on a revolutionary drug based on the discovery that the women of a local tribe remain fertile and child-baring well into their seventies. An ‘ability’ which, harnessed in a pill, would be worth billions. Problem is: the eccentric scientist refuses to report on her progress and whereabouts. Marina eventually finds her, of course. This isn’t to say her discoveries in the jungle aren’t surprising. Patchett excels in evoking the beauty of nature and the moral dilemmas her characters have to face, in a novel that hurls towards a feverishly thrilling finale. Published by: Harper
[SIC] JOSHUA CODY Yes, he was. Very sick, in fact. When a pulled muscle in his neck brought him to the doctor’s office, the author found out he had a malignant tumour. Initial chemotherapy failed, which led to a harrowing year of treatments, including full radiation and a bone marrow transplant. Cody lived to tell the tale, obviously. But don’t expect his account to be the usual misery memoir complete with life-affirming coda. It’s something much more disturbing, absorbing and oddly more beautiful than that. He writes about the panic and anxiety that leads to cocaine-fuelled excess, romantic and sexual entanglements with a stripper/dominatrix and a female member of his ‘pain team’ who turns out to be frighteningly insane. And about despair and the hallucinations of a morphine-clouded mind. But this trained composer and art-lover is also big on digressions. He rhapsodises in gorgeous, melodic prose on anything from Mahler to the beauty of New York and the frazzled genius of Ezra Pound. Cody’s self-conscious irony can at times border on the annoying and yet, almost despite himself, he’s produced the most moving and inspirational book you’re likely to read all year. In confusing times for the publishing industry two recent newspaper articles certainly didn’t help. On 12 December Reuters reported: ‘Reading is alive and increasingly electronic.’ Neighbourhood bookstores might be in decline, the story went on, but, thankfully, e-books were ‘nurturing bookworms who hunger for everything from blockbusters to literary fiction’. Fair enough. However, on the very same day The New York Times headlined: ‘E-books, Schmee-books: Readers Return to the Stores.’ In the initial weeks of Christmas shopping, Julie Bosman wrote, ‘brick-andmortar booksellers’ saw a souring increase in sales of as much as 16 per cent compared to the previous year. And high priced tittles didn’t deter the buying customers either, with glossy coffee table books and tombs like impressive art-catalogue The Louvre flying off the shelves. So, which is it?! Is print dead or dying? Or is it set for a miraculous comeback? Either way, the good news is: books may yet have a bright future in 2012.

Squids rarely get to be game heroes, but this mobile game allows eight of them to shine. Mysterious black ooze turns innocent sea creatures into fierce enemies, which results in a tactical role-playing game. You control your squids like catapults. By hurling them at rogue crabs and shrimps, you defeat your opponents and collect pearls. With these, you can upgrade your characters and buy armour. The game ends quite suddenly, after 21 levels, but it seems like more levels are in development. One thing is for sure: the creators at The Game Bakers have made a wonderful debut. TETRIS NINTENDO 3DS
This new version of Tetris, released by Nintendo on the 3DS handheld, may be the most complete version ever. It contains more than 20 modes of play and even makes use of the device’s camera. It also offers the option to use your Mii characters. The downside? It’s Tetris. Again! If you call yourself a gamer, you’ll already own at least half a dozen other versions.
SCRIBBLENAUTS REMIX iOS
Warner Bros. Interactive released Scribblenauts in 2009 for the Nintendo DS. Two years later, the publisher brings the game to your iOS device as well. The game design hasn’t changed: by spelling out the names of objects, animals and people, they appear as in-game objects. You have to use this gimmick to complete the assignment you get in each level. Experimenting with the dictionary, however, can be fun in itself. Given the many possibilities, absurd combinations are waiting to be made. What about a zombie president riding a bull? Just spell out the words and they’ll pop into existence. The Ibiza of the Alps At the crack of dawn I roll groggily out of bed, put on my snowboard boots, splash some water on my face, chuck a croissant in my mouth and take the first gondola up to a comfortable 2320-metre altitude. The white gold beckons and the sun is shining: it’s snowboarding time!

Opinions are divided, but phonetically Ischgl sounds like ‘Iskol’, though most people will understand if you say ‘Isgol’ or ‘Iesjol’. There are more than one million annual Ischgl wintersport visitors, but despite this the town still looks like a traditional Austrian village with charming streets, quaint shops and, of course, a big church. Highrise buildings are strictly limited and you can discover the entire village on foot. The main street is even car-free and makes for a nice relaxed stroll. Ischgl and the Swiss village Samnaun make up part of the Silvretta Arena, home to the largest connecting ski region within Europe (with 238km of slopes). The highest piste is the Greitspitze at 2872 metres. The area is snow-guaranteed and not just because of the relatively high altitude of most of the slopes: Ischgl has over 1000 snow guns that are utilised when Mother Nature fails to cooperate. Besides the many ski slopes, there are several snowshoe walks and there’s a reasonably extensive ski network in the lower areas and villages around Ischgl. And as for the apres-ski... this tradition is indispensable in Austrian resort towns and Ischgl is no exception. In fact, Ischgl is often called the Ibiza of the Alps, and for good reason. Around noon the stuben, bars and restaurants become full of happy skiers who celebrate the day with folk music, schnapps and beer. Try the Kuhstall or the Schatzi Bar to get a taste of the action. And if some resorts’ apres-ski ends around 7pm, in Ischgl it keeps on going and the nights are long (or short, whatever way you look at it). You can dance until dawn at many of the clubs dotted around - the most famous clubs being Pacha and the Trofena Arena. VIP desks, female dancers, champagne and a swirling dancefloor are all the right ingredients for a pretty wild night. There is a comfortable atmosphere among partygoers from Austria, Germany, the Netherlands and England, but you’ll also find more and more Eastern Europeans and Russians partying together.

De hoogbouw is beperkt en je kunt het gehele dorp te voet verkennen. De dorpsstraat is zelfs autovrij, dus het is er heerlijk slenteren. Ischgl maakt samen met het Zwitserse Samnaun deel uit van de Silvretta Arena en herbergt zo’n 238 kilometer aan pistes. De hoogste piste is de Greitspitze op 2.872 meter. Het gebied is gegarandeerd sneeuwzeker en niet eens vanwege de relatief hoge ligging van de meeste pistes: Ischgl heeft ruim 1.000 sneeuwkanonnen die ze kunnen inzetten wanneer Moeder Natuur achterblijft met de sneeuw. Naast de vele kilometers aan skipistes zijn er diverse sneeuwschoenwandelingen mogelijk en is er een redelijk uitgebreid langlaufnetwerk in de lager gelegen gebieden en dorpen rond Ischgl. En dan de apres-ski… Onmisbaar in een beetje Oostenrijks skigebied en Ischgl is daar geen uitzondering op. Integendeel. Ischgl wordt ook wel het Ibiza van de Alpen genoemd en dat is niet voor niks. Rond het middaguur stromen de stuben, barretjes en restaurants vol met vrolijke wintersporters die de dag afsluiten met knallende hosmuziek, schnapps en bier. De Kuhstall is befaamd, evenals de Schatzi Bar. En waar in andere skigebieden de apres-ski rond een uur of 7 ‘s avonds eindigt, gaat in Ischgl alles gewoon door. De nachten zijn dan ook lang (of kort, het is maar net hoe je het bekijkt). In de talrijke clubs kun je dansen tot het ochtendgloren. Meest aansprekende en bekende clubs zijn de Pasha en de Trofena Arena. VIP-desks, danseressen, champagne en een kolkende dansvloer zijn hier de ingrediënten voor een mooie wilde avond. Er heerst overal een gemoedelijke sfeer waar gezellige feestgangers uit voornamelijk Oostenrijk, Duitsland, Nederland en Engeland samen feest vieren.

BOARDS UP, DUDE Back to the snowboarding. I chew hastily on my croissant and enjoy the magnificent views of the Silvrettabahn. At 1400 metres this super gondola (which fits 24 individuals per car!) brings you in just 20 minutes to Idalp, located at 2300 metres. The journey up leads through the forest, a beautiful valley and the ever-mighty mountains. From the Idalp you can literally go in any direction and the most logical thing to do is to go even higher. Because the higher the mountain, the longer the descent. A little under 100 metres to the right and we enter the Idjochbahn, which brings us via the Greitspitzlift up to 2872 metres. And now it’s party time! 48

BOARDS UP, DUDE Terwijl ik haastig mijn croissantje wegkauw geniet ik van het schitterende uitzicht in de Silvrettabahn. Vanuit Ischgl op 1.400 meter brengt deze supergondel (24 personen per bak!) je in een kleine 20 minuten naar de Idalp op 2.300 meter. De tocht naar boven voert dwars door het bos, door een mooie vallei waar het Mittelstation op 1.683 meter ligt en langs de steeds kaler worden machtige bergen. Vanaf de Idalp kun je letterlijk alle kanten op en de meest logische is om nog hoger te gaan. Want hoe hoger de berg, hoe langer de afdaling! Board onder en een kleine 100 meter naar rechts stappen wij vlot de Idjochbahn in die ons via de Greitspitzlift naar 2.872 meter brengt. En dan is het knallen!
GUARANTEED SNOW Ischgl is a guaranteed snow area, made possible by the incessant creation of new snow by more than 1000 snow cannons. No effort is spared when it comes to covering the slopes with a nice layer of groomed snow. SNEEUWZEKER Ischgl is gegarandeerd sneeuwzeker: de seizoensopening dit jaar is, ondanks dat er geen enkele natuurlijke vlok sneeuw is gevallen, mogelijk gemaakt door het onophoudelijk aanmaken van verse sneeuw door de ruim 1.000 sneeuwkanonnen die Ischgl rijk is. My first run is wonderful. I start with a Red descent to Swiss village Samnaun with the Ravaischer Salaas valley to my right. The morning sun pierces the clear blue sky and visibility is optimal. I feel as happy as a child as I take my first jumps on the sides of the track and shave down the snow cannons. The adrenaline is howling through my body and my legs are already spent. From the Alp Trida Eck we take the Videljoch elevator back to Idalp. We pass a snow park that hasn’t opened yet, but despite the red gates there are four snowboarders who are going wild. Tricks like the backflip, cliff drop, fakie, fakie nose ride, snaking, ground spin 360, re-entry, chicken salad, tweaking, lean, alley-oop and many more crazy moves are thrown around by these guys.
Hoe heerlijk om weer de eerste sporen te trekken. We beginnen met een rode afdaling richting het Zwitserse Samnaun met rechts het Ravaischer Salaas dal. We boarden in de ochtendzon tegen een strakblauwe lucht, dus het zicht is optimaal. Als een kind zo blij ‘pak ik mijn eerste jumpies’ aan de zijkanten van de piste en scheer ik langs de sneeuwkanonnen. De adrenaline giert door mijn lichaam en mijn bovenbenen vertonen al sporen van verzuring. Vanaf de Alp Trida Eck pakken we de Viderjoch lift terug richting de Idalp. We komen hier langs een nog niet geopend snowpark, maar ondanks de rode hekjes zijn er 4 snowboarders die helemaal los gaan. Tricks als de backflip, cliff drop, fakie, nose ride fakie en nog veel meer spectaculaire tricks laten deze boarders zien. Goed toeven is het tijdens de lunch in het Pardorama restaurant. Je hebt hier een weids uitzicht en een heerlijk zonneterras met ligbedjes waar je weer genoeg energie op kunt doen voor de middagafdalingen. En natuurlijk voor de apres-ski...

If you’re getting hungry at this point, the Pardorama restaurant is a great spot for lunch - you have a panoramic view and there’s a lovely sun terrace with sun beds where you can gain your strength for the afternoon runs. And for the apres-ski... TOP OF THE MOUNTAIN CONCERT The name suggests that this is a concert on top of a mountain. This isn’t entirely true, unless you want to see it metaphorically as a ‘top concert’. Each year the winter season in Ischgl is opened with the Top of the Mountain Concert. International stars such as Mel C, Alanis Morissette, Peter Gabriel, The Corrs, Bob Dylan, Bon Jovi, Tina Turner, Sting, Rod Stewart and Elton John perform here for more than 20,000 people. This year, Roxette performs with a spectacular rock concert and sing-alongs. After the concert we are served a hearty meal in the Pardorama restaurant and then the night began - and ended - in the Trofena Arena in the centre of Ischgl. Despite having just three hours sleep, I went up the mountain in the morning to do a few runs. I’ve always known that no sleep and too much schnapps isn’t a good combination, especially when snowboarding the next day. My weak legs give way and I suffer a hard fall. Lucky I’m wearing a helmet!
TOP OF THE MOUNTAIN CONCERT De naam doet vermoeden dat het hier een concert op de top van een berg betreft. Niet helemaal waar, tenzij je het metaforisch wilt zien als een topconcert. Het winterseizoen wordt in Ischgl elk jaar groots geopend met het Top of the Mountain Concert. Wereldsterren als Mel C, Alanis Morissette, Peter Gabriel, The Corrs, Bob Dylan, Bon Jovi, Tina Turner, Sting, Rod Stewart en Elton John traden hier eerder op voor ruim 20.000 man! En dit jaar geeft Roxette acte de présence met een spetterend rockconcert en bekende meezingers als Joyride en Must have been love (jeugdsentiment voor deze 30-jarige jongen). Na het concert nuttigen we een stevig maal in het Panorama restaurant op de Idalp om vervolgens de nacht te beginnen - en te eindigen - in de Trofena Arena in het centrum van Ischgl. Ondanks de kleine 3 uur slaap ben ik toch rond 9:00 uur de piste opgegaan. En dat heb ik geweten ook: te weinig slaap en teveel schnapps maakten dat mijn slappe benen ‘HOHO’ zeiden. Waarop ik een enorme smak maakte. En dan ben je blij dat je een skihelm draagt!
A good alternative for days like this is to book a paragliding flight. From the Pardatschgrat near the Pardorama restaurant you have some stunning paragliding opportunities and if you opt for a duoflight you don’t need to use your weak (hungover) legs. Because of its extensive slopes network, exciting nightlife, beautiful scenery and extreme sports opportunities, Ischgl is a place you have to visit at least once in a lifetime.

Vanaf o.a. de Pardatschorat bij het Pardorama restaurant kun je schitterend paragliden en tijdens een duosprong heb je die slappe benen toch niet nodig. The name Holland, although generally accepted, is not actually the name of the country. Holland makes up two of the 12 provinces in the Netherlands. Near the border of Holland’s most southern appendage, Limburg, lies Snowworld Landgraaf, home to the world’s largest indoor winter sport resort. Considering that most of Zeeland is below sea level, soaring down a 220m slope with a 41m-drop is unlikely. However it’s a viable option at Snowbase in the ‘sea-lands’ a few hundred metres from the border with Belgium. Snowbase is home to a fun park with grinds and jumps that attract a lot of snowboarders, but skiers need not fret, as there is plenty of room for them too. If there’s one winter activity that’s quintessentially Dutch it’s ice-skating. Unfortunately the climate in Holland doesn’t allow for Dutchies to enjoy wearing their skates on frozen lakes and rivers often. FlevOnice designed a fitting solution: 5km of artificially frozen ice (open from the end of November until early March). Throughout the season old-fashioned Dutch treats like poffertjes, classic meals like stamppot and traditional pea soup are served.

The biggest and longest running theme park in the Netherlands is all about fairytales and magic. For added mystique you must visit during Winter Efteling, which runs from 10 November to 5 February. 250,000 kilograms of ice get you? Apparently the biggest, and arguably the most beautiful, collection of ice sculptures in Europe. Ice artists from all over the world have travelled to Zwolle wielding pick axes and chainsaws to turn all that ice into elaborate figures. This year the festival is more interactive allowing people to touch the statues and even chop their way through some of them.

BANNER XPRESS Balloons are cheesy, flowers are girly and presents don’t pack that required punch when you’re picking someone up at the airport. You need something exciting, affordable yet still personal. Banners are pretty much perfect. But who wants to get paint everywhere only to find the exclamation mark won’t even fit?
Ballonen zijn cheesy, bloemen meisjesachtig en cadeautjes dekken net niet de lading wanneer je iemand op gaat halen van het vliegveld. Je hebt iets spannends nodig, betaalbaar en toch persoonlijk. Spandoeken zijn daarvoor tamelijk perfect. Maar wie wil er nou overal verf morsen, om er vervolgens achter te komen dat het uitroepteken niet eens gaat passen?
Thibaud Bruna (30) and his school friend Olivier Jansen (31) were well aware of these qualms when they began designing their selfproclaimed ‘first banner kiosk in the world’. The banner machine takes you through five simple steps and within minutes the canvas is ready. Expletives aside, you can print whatever you want on the banner, which comes in three different sizes: 40cm, 130cm and 3m. And although there is only one font, the thematic options range from Delfts Blue and taxi driver signage to flowery prints.

De spandoekmachine werkt in vijf simpele stappen, en binnen een paar minuten is het doek al klaar. Behalve scheldwoorden en ziektes kun je alles op het spandoek laten printen. De spandoeken hebben drie verschillende maten: 40 centimeter, 130 centimeter en 3 meter. En ook al is er maar één lettertype, de thematische opties verschillen van Delfts blauw en verkeersborden tot bloemetjesprint.
Since 2 November the unique machine has graced Arrivals 2 at Schiphol and has been hugely popular - an estimated 40-50 banners are printed every day. Expansion is imminent for the school friends, especially after various platforms like Reuters, The New York Times and CNN reported on the invention. Requests for BannerXpress machines have since rolled in from as far away as Australia. The next project Bruna and Jansen are working on is a mobile version of the kiosk that can be rolled into temporary events.

Thanks to the water tap station at Schiphol, a water pump will be built in Bangladesh that will provide an entire village with clean drinking water. Walls and tiles are made of waste materials Before a range of food and coffee were made available, their origins were critically reviewed and wherever possible, recycled and reused materials have been incorporated into the design of the outlet concept. Its walls are constructed of waste materials such as old wood, disposable pallets, old tiles and telephone wires. New tiles are made from ground waste rock and incorporated into the counter top, and the furniture consists of old cabinets and tables. 70
