Course Description
HONR 3000/ENGL 3200/GEOG 3910 Traveling and Telling: Mobility and the Art of Narrative, 3 credit hours Instructors: Dr. William Decker, English Dr. Tom Wikle, Geography Magdalene College, Cambridge, England July 8 - July 20, 2012 (The final project is due October 20, 2012, making this an OSU Fall course) The Scholar Development summer course in Magdalene College, Cambridge, is nearly a decade old now and involves two weeks of study on a topic prepared by OSU faculty, with completion of the course project in mid-October for fall, 2012 credit. (3 hours). Typically students will spend 4-5 hours per day in class during the week, and leave Cambridge on the weekend for travel around the U.K. and beyond. This year, for purposes of the course content, that time will be extended for students to visit sites in groups for observation and analysis, and then reporting on return to Cambridge. This course structure has been highly successful before on this program, and this year’s topic seems ideal for a similar educational experience—as planned and taught by professors Bill Decker (English) and Tom Wikle (Geography). In order to take full advantage of the short time in Cambridge, reading assignments will be made before-hand, and meetings to discuss class focus and travel sites will be held in the spring semester of 2012 for those selected to attend. One of our goals is to introduce students to methods of observing foreign cultures in ways that allow them to relate the past to the contemporary moment. Another is to demonstrate how, as travelers to these sites, they not only observe and record their responses to artifacts, but interact closely with residents. Their observations and interactions will form the basis of the writing for this course. In preparation for the trip, students sample a wide spectrum of travel narrative drawn from various literary genres (essay, journal, letter, poem, short story, blog) depicting American travel in the UK and on the European continent. While immersed in the experience of the foreign sojourn, students will begin to compose a narrative of their travels. In developing their own individual travelogues, students themselves will be free to determine the genre and method of this document for its final production.
Grants
The Office of Scholar Development, thanks to generous alumni donations and outstanding support of the Henry Bellmon Endowment and the Lew Wentz Foundation, will give each student enrolled in this course a $1,725 grant to offset the course costs. Additional grants above the automatic $1,725 level will also be available based on financial need. See "Applying for Grants" on page 1.
Course Costs
The actual expenses for this course are expected to be $3,225/student. With a minimum grant of $1,725, the cost to you will be approximately $1,500 (if you are applying for, and are awarded, an additional grant above the basic $1,725, the cost for you will be lower). This will cover tuition and fees for 3 undergraduate credits, housing at Magdalene College for 14 nights (arrive Cambridge July 7 and depart July 21) and daily continental breakfasts. Not covered are airfare to and from the United Kingdom, additional meals and miscellaneous expenses. OSU Tuition Waivers do not apply to Outreach travel courses since all fees collected are applied to course expenses.
Billing
All tuition and applicable program fees, along with the grants you receive, will appear on your Bursar account at the beginning of the Fall semester in August, 2012. Note: May 1, 2012 is the deadline to drop this course with no financial penalty. After that date, you will be responsible for all the course costs, including tuition, even though it will not appear on your Bursar account until August.
This is a statement of interest. It is NOT an official OSU registration form. Completion of this form will only allow you to be considered for acceptance in the program.
