INTRODUCTION You’re ready to be interviewed for a new job. You’ve practiced for the interview many times, ready to answer any question that the interviewer would throw at you. You breeze through many of the questions, feeling confident that you’ve got this! However, you’re stunned when the interviewer suddenly asks you this: “What is your personality type?”

What is a Personality Type? For those of you who don’t know, a personality type is a psychological classification of different types of individuals (16 Personalities). The difference between a personality trait and a personality type is that a type encompasses a larger group of behavorial traits (16 Personalities). Personality typing is the best way to identify an individual’s character while categorizing personalities into subdivided groups. The most popular personality typing structure that many people use to discover their personality type is called the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator®, or MBTI®.

What is the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator®? The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator® is an instrument, specifically a questionnaire, that provides your personality type and type description based on the results. These questions derive from real-world applications and how you perceive the world. The MBTI® is a widely used personality test around the world, ranging from corporate HR departments to colleges and employers. In fact, recent studies show that “1 in every 5 Fortune 1000 companies use it in the hiring process” (Marketplace).

6 Introduction

A Brief History of the MBTI® The MBTI® was developed by Katharine Cook Briggs and her daughter, Isabel Briggs Myers, in the 1960s (Truity). Inspired by Carl Gustav Jung’s Psychological Types theory, Myers and Briggs formed their own personality indicator. As a teacher, Briggs was interested in personality typing and utilized Jung’s writings to develop a simpler, more convenient way for personality typing (16 Personalities). As a result, Myers and Briggs created the four-letter acronyms.

The Basic Structure of the MBTI® The MBTI® uses an acronym format to simplify identifying personality types. The system uses the same theory proposed by Carl Jung that there are four principal psychological functions that help describe how people experience the world (16 Personalities). The MBTI® is divided into four categories: Introversion/ Extroversion, Sensing/Intuition, Thinking/Feeling, and Judging/Perceiving. When an individual takes the assessment, they take one aspect from each category, resulting in 16 personality types to be divded into. I recommend Gifts Differing: Understanding Personality Type by Isabel Briggs Myers if you would like to read more about the Myers-Briggs theory in detail.

Introduction 7

INTRODUCTION (CONTINUED) Ways to Take the MBTI® Assessment

The Importance of the MBTI® The MBTI® instrument allows people to develop self-awareness. It is beneficial to build one’s selfawareness so that an individual can improve upon their weaknesses and grow with their strengths. We can learn a great deal about who we are as individuals and learn about the people around us through awareness. This basic and fundamental human understanding can allow us to initiate change in ourselves and others, have better empathy, and acknowledge our own beliefs, values, strengths and weaknesses. All of these qualities are important to have in the workplace, at home, when meeting new people, and, most importantly, in yourself.

8 Introduction

The most popular approach to discovering your personality type is taking the test online. However, there are many different approaches that organizations use to sort the personality types into different categories. It is important to review the model of a test before comparing results with others. For example, the company NERIS Analytics Limited uses their own model to help divide the personality types. The NERIS® model utilizes the MBTI® while adding in an extra letter to make five categories for more accurate results (16 Personalities). As this was the test that I took online to discover my personality type, and is often the first recommendation when looking for the MBTI® test, I will be using the NERIS® model and site as my main source of information for my book. I highly recommend taking the test at the link provided here: www.16personalities.com

The Four Dominant Personality Aspects

The Type Groups

There are four dominant personality aspects that help determine the personality type: Mind, Energy, Nature, and Tactics (16 Personalities).

There are two groups that categorize the personality type: Roles and Strategies (16 Personalities). Roles help determine our goals while Strategies show us our preferred methods of performing goals. Combining them together gives us four distinctive type groups.
