BIOGRAPHY Grace Hopper is a pioneer in her own right and a lot of people may not know who she is or her impact on the world of computer science and engineering. In the 1950s, Hopper was one of the very first computer programmers to this date and she was also a great mathematician as well. Her contributions to the world of technology should not be frowned upon and be looked at as great achievements.

Born: December 9, 1906 Died: January 1, 1992

BIO (CON.) Grace Hopper joined the Navy in 1943 around World War II. While being with the Navy, this is where a lot of major accomplishments were made. Her strong mathematical background allowed her to become of the Bureau of Ordance Computation Project at Harvard University.

This where her computer programming career would eventually take off and she would go on to program on the Mark I Computer.

CONTRIBUTION #1 Grace Hopper played a huge part in designing the first commercial electronic computer known as the UNIVAC I. She was the head programmer in the full design of this computer. (Image of Univac (Center))

CONTRIBUTION #2 She help create terms like “bugs” for computers and the word compiler which if you are a programmer these are two terms you may hear quite frequently.

6

CONTRIBUTION #3 She created the first compiler (A-0) which allowed you to be able to turn code into software. This was complier layed the ground work for COBOL or the Common Business Oriented Language which was later on created.

CONTRIBUTION #4 She proposed the idea of writing programs in words and she worked on making the first English languauge complier. This was called FLOW-MATIC.

MONUMENT The monument’s design includes the very first compiler ever from COBOL and The coding languauge that can be found on the left side of the UNIVAC I. The monument should also have under it the years Grace Hopper lived and her contributions and bio would be found next to that for people to read about.
