WHO IS MARIO? The use of makeup to express, conceal, and entertain has been imbedded into the lives of so many men and women of all ages and walks of life since the beginning of humanity. In today’s day and age, makeup has taken on a life of its own, an art form really. Like any art medium there are those individuals who specialize their craft in said medium. A painter works with paint, a potter works with clay, and so a makeup artist works with cosmetics. One of the most renowned, game-changing makeup artists of the twenty-first century is Mario Dedivanovic.

MARIO THE MAKEUP ARTIST Mario Dedivanovic was born on October 1st, 1983 in The Bronx, New York to Albanian immigrant parents. He first got his start in the makeup industry as a teenager working a beauty counter at Sephora, a multinational retailer of personal care and beauty products. He would later go on to become a true worldwide pioneer for makeup artistry. He now boasts an impressive and extensive career, spanning 20 years. Dedivanovic has worked with some of pop culture’s most respected sensations like Jennifer Lopez, Salma Hayek, and his most loyal celebrity client, Kim Kardashian West. His trademark beauty style, soft glam, is centered on accentuating a woman’s natural features rather than hiding or morphing them. In past interviews Dedivanovic has stated his biggest inspirations include Marilyn Monroe and other actresses of Hollywood’s Golden Age whose makeup was typically very natural yet very glamorous. His minimalistic approach to makeup has taken the beauty world by storm as now most women and men don’t feel they need makeup in order to look or feel beautiful, but rather use it as an accessory or as a method of expression. Dedivanovic holds “makeup masterclasses” in cities all over the planet where makeup enthusiasts interested in learning from the master himself, can.

MONUMENT For his major contributions to the beauty industry and for his work uplifting makeup- loving women and men from all over, I believe we as a society are indebted to Mario Dedivanovic. I think that a token of our appreciation would be best demonstrated by a statute of his face. Stone or steel, marble maybe. Neoclassical perhaps, a bust. Something minimalistic yet beautiful much like his work would represent him and his art form best. The statue would be appreciated most in an area surrounded by art like the Art and Design Building at George Mason University.

MONUMENT CONT’D A place even more suitable for such a piece would be his home city, New York. Specifically, Central Park.
