Who is Ted Leonsis?

He was born on January 8th, 1957, in New York City, New York. At 18 years old, he became the first in his family to attend college. He started and finished his university studies at Georgetown Univerity, in Washington D.C.

Eventually, into his business career, Leonsis became the executive CEO of AOL, a website service. Moreover, Leonsis founded and still currently overlooks Monumental Sport and Entertainment, which owns the Washington Capitals, Wizards, Mystic, and Valor.

Ted’s Family

Leonsis has a wife, Lynn Leonsis. Their marriage created two children, daughter Elle and son Zachary.

Education

Ted Leonsis studied and majored in American Studies as an undergraduate at Georgetown University.

Leonsis also continues be involve himself in the education community by returning to Georgetown Univerity as a guest speaker to students.

His path to Monumental Sports

Leonsis sold his start up company to AOL. Evenutally, he worked his way up the ranks until he became the CEO. However, Leonsis’ stint at AOL would come to an end. This allowed him to chase a passion that caught his eye: Sports. This sparked a business idea within Leonsis, the creation of Monumental Sports and Entertainment.

What Monumental Sports Does

Monumental Sports promotes and advertises some of Washinton D.C’s major sports teams. They promote the teams that they have ownership over:

Washington Capitals

Washington Wizards

Washinton Mystics

Washington Valor

Because Ted Leonsis is the founder and owner of Monumental, he also is the majority owner of these sports organizations.

How Leonsis Turned D.C Sports Around

Leonsis prioritized the continuous increase of advertising these professional sports around the greater D.C area. This included billboards, televison commericals, promotional events, and much more.

Leonsis also prioritized a better in-person fan viewing experience, with the remodeling of Capital One Arena, where all of these sports call home. He added a better jumbotron, more fan interaction for game-time, and even new concourse options for food and drink.

How Ted Leonsis Created a Winning Culture

Ted has emphasized healthy partnerships with each of his teams. He has ensured and provided the resources to help these teams accomplish winning seasons and championships. These relationships are built from trust from all staff on both sides. Ted Leonsis cares about the jobs of people involved with these teams. Leonsis finds the value from everyone: from a President of a team, all the way down to the equipment managers.

A Statue to Tribute his Passion and Ressurection of D.C Sports

Without Ted Leonsis, there is no winning sports culture in Washington D.C. A statue will be placed outide of Capital One Arena in D.C. Additionally, the same statue will be placed outside of Eagle Bank Arena on the campus of George Mason University. The locations for these statues is based off of the fact that Monumental Sports and Entertainment owns these venues.

Moreover, the statue itself will be a larger than life-sized full body staue of Ted Leonsis. In the statue, he will be wearing one o his patented suits. The grim smile of the statue will be a reflection of that same smile Ted Leonsis is seen walking around with.
