LIFE DRAWING CLASSES–DROP-IN

– Day courses start at 10.00am and finish at 4.30pm. – All materials are included in day courses. – Overalls are available although we still advise that

Tucked within a charismatic nook of this thriving artist community, the renowned Porthmeor studios are home to the St Ives School of Painting whose colourful history dates back to 1938.

summer workshops During the Summer we run a series of practical art workshops for adults, families and children (aged 5-12).

Intro

Every year hundreds of students of all levels of experience and from all round the world come to study at the School. Learning is immersive in small friendly and dynamic groups. High quality structured tuition is provided by experienced practicing artists and all materials are provided. The unique opportunity to absorb the rich atmosphere of a creative space that has hardly changed since artists first occupied the building in the late 1800s, bring people back year after year.

mixed media Into the Wild 15–19 Jul £355 – includes all materials Tutor: Mixed – Days: 5 Time will be spent out in the rugged and beautiful landscape around St Ives gathering material in sketchbooks. Back in the studio, the transformative process of combining sketches with memory, imagination and the senses will encourage you to find your own personal visual language.

Abstracting Landscape 29 Jul–02 Aug £355 – includes all materials Tutor: Mixed – Days: 5 The Penwith coastline and its mining architecture will be the inspiration for this painting abstraction course. Time will be spent out in the landscape exploring the enigmatic structures and ruins on this wild coast while being introduced to varied techniques for collecting visual notes. Back in the studio these will be transformed into expressive mixed media paintings with a focus on moving work towards abstraction.

The Art of Keeping it Simple 05–07 Aug £225 – includes all materials Tutor: Marion Taylor – Days: 3 Focusing on artists associated with St Ives, including Ben Nicholson, William Scott and Patrick Heron, this course will be based on still-life – the perfect genre for learning and experimentation. It will aim to show how simplifying the essence of both subject and content can lead to strong composition, beautiful drawings and paintings.

One Artist in Search of Another On the Trail of Ben Nicholson 16 Aug £75 – includes all materials Tutor: Alice Mumford – Days: 1 This is a one day course which will take us around parts of the town of St Ives. This exploration will give an understanding of the fundamental ideas and influences behind Ben Nicholson’s work. Students will translate this experience into a painted textile following a tradition of textile making by other St Ives artists including Patrick Heron and Terry Frost.

£225 – includes all materials Tutor: Liz Luckwell and Marion Taylor – Days: 3 This three day course is inspired by a renowned trio of women artists who worked in St Ives at the height of the modernist era. The abstracted forms of Barbara Hepworth, the vibrant collages of Sandra Blow and the intense mark making of Wilhelmina Barns Graham, were all inspired by materials and forms. Students will be immersed in the same environment with visits to the Hepworth Garden and working in the Porthmeor studio complex overlooking the sea. Time will be spent developing personal responses using painting, drawing and collage.

£225 – includes all materials Tutor: Marion Taylor – Days: 3 This course is about understanding how to make colour work within your painting. As your starting point, artist Marion Taylor will reference international artists such as Matisse, Morandi, Bonnard and Patrick Heron. Based on still life, the perfect genre for learning and experimentation, the course will equip you with practical approaches to colour that can aid strong composition and create beautiful drawings and paintings.

£225 – includes all materials Tutor: Jo Salter – Days: 3 This course will guide you through the skills and techniques needed for portraying landscape in a considered and immediate way as well as looking at composition and perception of space within the picture. Students will learn to create fresh and dynamic paintings both out in the landscape as well as working from images and studies back in the studio.

Rooftops in St Ives 27–29 Aug

Portraiture Painting 14–17 Oct

£225 – includes all materials Tutor: Gary Long – Days: 3 The rooftops of St Ives have been a source of inspiration for numerous artists over the years. Seeking out elevated view points around St Ives, students will make sketches with colour annotations and recordings of sun directions and shadows. Back in the studio, equipped with these notes, students will develop charcoal and gouache studies that can then worked up into a painting in oils.

£320 – includes all materials Tutor: Gary Long and Hilary Jean Gibson – Days: 4 This four day course will be an opportunity to examine in-depth approaches to portraiture using artists such as Lucian Freud and Stanley Spencer as the initial inspiration. Our tutors Gary Long and Hilary Jean Gibson will lead the course. Examining the visual language Spencer and Freud created, students will work from direct observation with a clothed and nude model, using drawing as well as painting with gouache and oils to explore the essence of portraiture.

£225 – includes all materials Tutor: Marion Taylor – Days: 3 St Ives is considered by many to be the cradle of British abstract painting. Through practical exercises and inspirational guidance, students will be led through an exploratory process, looking at scale, composition and materials, in the context of the postwar St Ives modernist movement.

£225 – includes all materials Tutor: Liz Luckwell and Daniel Barnard – Days: 3 In the spirit of the St Ives modernist painter Peter Lanyon, this workshop will respond to landscape through dynamic drawing and the creation of three dimensional sculptures. Students will be experimenting with space, form and composition, adopting truly transformational approaches and responses to the world around them.

Spirit of Place 05–07 Oct £225 – includes all materials Tutor: Jo Salter – Days: 3 This three day course will explore responses to landscape, place and time. Through techniques and approaches designed to stimulate and challenge, you will find ways of conveying energy and immediacy in your work. There will be a combination of experimental drawing, collage and painting both out in the landscape and back in the studio. This will be an ideal course for those seeking to experiment with their approach to landscape painting and drawing.

Lanyon’s Landscape 31 Oct – 1 Nov £155 – includes all materials Tutor: Liz Hough – Days: 2 Students will sketch out in the landscape at Little Travalgan, Peter Lanyon’s favourite spot in West Penwith, with stunning 360° panoramic views of the peninsula. Back in the studio, sketches will be transformed into dynamic compositions using paint, mixed media and collage.

Dreamscapes and Memories Exploring Consciousness. 18–21 Nov £295 – includes all materials Tutor: Kate Walters – Days: 4 Using a range of materials, along with techniques to enhance bodily awareness and being fully present, students will learn to explore, express and develop internal visions in their work. Artists and poets who have worked in this way such as Frida Kahlo, William Blake and Anselm Kiefer will be key references throughout. You will need to keep a record of any inspirational dreams you have in the weeks preceding the course as well as any memorable dreams from any part of your life.

The Human Touch - Roger Hilton 25–27 Nov £235 – includes all materials Tutor: Marion Taylor – Days: 3 Roger Hilton’s work was imbued with a human presence and sensuality, regardless of the subject matter. Inspired by Hilton’s exploration of a new kind of figurative painting that involved both representation and abstraction, this is a course that encourages an expressive, energetic quality to drawing and painting.

Introduction to Mixed Media Painting 13–16 Jan 2014 £295 – includes all materials Tutor: Mixed – Days: 4 Ideal for total beginners this course has been specially designed by our tutors to set you on the path to painting with confidence. Inspired by the methods and techniques of St Ives artists like Ben Nicholson and Peter Lanyon, you will be taught simple and dynamic approaches to painting using a mixed media approach incorporating acrylics, oils, simple printmaking and drawing.

Waterbased Beginners Watercolour 31 Jul–02 Aug £225 – includes all materials Tutor: Hilary Jean Gibson – Days: 3 This course covers the basics of this complex, rewarding and beautiful medium. Students will learn to lay washes, understand the various qualities of watercolour pigments, their transparency, opacity, granulations and the use of body colour, understand the varieties of watercolour papers and which brushes to use. Through demonstrations, theory and practice students will develop confidence in basic techniques that will be a springboard for enjoying this medium to the full.

Sea and Sky 12–13 Sep

£150 – includes all materials Tutor: Hilary Jean Gibson – Days: 2 Artist Hilary Jean Gibson will lead you through how to capture the sea and sky using watercolour. The moods of the landscape surrounding the studios have long inspired marine painters - from the turquoise waters of a still day to wild Atlantic storms. The course is an ideal follow-on for those who have attended an introductory watercolour workshop or course before and would like to develop their skills further.

OIL painting An Introduction to Oils 09–12 Jul £295 – includes all materials Tutor: Mixed – Days: 4 Ideal for total beginners, this course has been specially designed by our tutors at the School to set you on the path to painting with confidence. You will be taught simple and dynamic approaches to painting in oils with a focus on both responding to landscape as well as working in the studio from still life. This will provide you with a thorough introduction to this versatile and accessible medium.

Expressive Oils 16–18 Jul £225 – includes all materials Tutor: Gary Long – Days: 3 This course will guide you through developing a rich and expressive approach to oil painting, to capture the shape, colour and the essence of the flower as still life. Working from bold colourful arrangements in the studio on both canvas and board using brush and palette knife, you will be guided through the use of oils to develop your own rich painterly style.

Oil Painting in St Ives 12–14 Aug £235 – includes all materials Tutor: Alice Mumford – Days: 3 Capture the renowned light and colour of St Ives and experience the iconic locations of the historic harbour, Porthmeor Beach and the views of Godrevy Lighthouse. An ideal course for beginners to be guided through the practicalities and challenges of working with oils en plein air.

Connecting with NaturePainting Outdoors 02–04 Sep £225 – includes all materials Tutor: Lucie Bray – Days: 3 Porthmeor Studio artist Lucie Bray will share techniques and approaches to the challenge of working outdoors. She will advise you on how to combine observational and intuitive responses to achieve oil paintings that have an energy and connection with nature.

Dynamic Oils 05–06 Sep £150 – includes all materials Tutor: Jo Salter – Days: 2 Artist Jo Salter will guide you through the skills and techniques needed for using oils to capture life in a fast and immediate way. Students will create fresh and dynamic studies both in the studio and out in the landscape, as well as exploring contemporary approaches to finishing their paintings.

Bonnard the Revolutionary 09–11 Sep £235 – includes all materials Tutor: Alice Mumford – Days: 3 Picasso said Pierre Bonnard was ‘a piddling little artist’ due to his fascination with the domestic over the grand and his dedication to recording the physical sensation of light. However his approach revolutionised painting. Bonnard’s legacy was to change the way the viewer interacts with the painting, influencing a whole generation of artists including Rothko. Working from still life you will gain an insight into his use of colour and composition.

Where Sea Meets Land 30 Sep–03 Nov £295 – includes all materials Tutor: Gary Long – Days: 4 Explore a painterly approach to capturing on canvas the dramatic encounter between the sea and the land. There will be visits to nearby beaches to observe and sketch the ocean, working with gouache and making annotations on colour and weather. Back in the studio you will develop these visual notes and sketches into oil paintings.

Winifred Nicholson and Colour 21–23 Nov £235 – includes all materials Tutor: Alice Mumford – Days: 3 The artist Winifred Nicholson beckons us to discard old conceptions that colour must be tacked down to release its true vitality. With references to her works, students will explore Nicholson’s favourite subjects colour, still life and the window.

Pierre Bonnard and Winifred Nicholson, who each found their own solutions. This course examines particular problems to do with space in paintings and how to overcome them. Over the three days students will paint still life, views of Porthmeor beach and St Ives from the studio windows.

Drawing Insight Into the Figure 16–18 Sep £235 – includes all materials Tutor: Gary Long – Days: 3 The figure is a vital and enduring feature of the visual arts and forms the basis of many artistic fields and disciplines. This course takes an in-depth approach to exploring the human figure using the nude model as its focus. The course will help students achieve their own visual language through harnessing mark making techniques in a lively, expressive and energetic way. Exploring tone, light and shade, negative space, proportion and structure you will work using a range of fluid mediums such as gouache and ink.
