St Ives School of Painting is a place of retreat, a space for you to come and open up your creativity. Our passion is for the simple yet limitless medium of painting and drawing. It is part of the fabric of our studios where artists have made work for more than a 100 years including Francis Bacon, Patrick Heron and Ben Nicholson. Our courses take place in the recently renewed Porthmeor Studios, “with the best sea views in Britain� steeped in a hundred years of artistic practice. We have been teaching in this creative space since 1938. Come and join us, whatever your level of experience or background. Our students who travel to us from around the UK and internationally, regularly tell us their experience with us is the best they’ve ever had. This international reputation is based on our carefully designed stimulating courses and our experienced and passionate tutors. Whether you are with us for one day or a week, your time spent with us painting and drawing will develop a deep knowledge about the world around you that can last a lifetime.

Exploring PaintingTowards a Personal Practice 10–12 Mar | Mixed Media £235 Jesse Leroy Smith Explore the diversity and potential of painting and in particular, discover your own personal approach. Work on different scales both individually as well as collaboratively and with different media. You will be challenged and inspired to loosen up your way of working. Where Sea Meets Land 17–20 Mar | Oils £295 Gary Long Explore an expressive and energetic approach to capture the dramatic encounter between the sea and the land. You will visit nearby beaches and work with gouache to create visual notes on colour and weather to develop into a larger canvas back in the studio. You will experiment with different scales and bring in mixed media to loosen up your technique. Constructing Landscape 14–17 Apr | Mixed Media

£295 Liz Luckwell + Daniel Barnard This workshop will respond to landscape through dynamic drawing and the creation of threedimensional sculptures. Inspired by the approach of St Ives modernist painter Peter Lanyon, students will move from building constructions inspired by landscape into drawing and painting. You will experiment with space, form and composition, adopting transformational responses to the world around you.

Expressive Oils 22–24 Apr | Oils £235 Gary Long Develop your own rich, painterly style and capture the shape, colour and the essence of the flower as still life. Working from bold colourful arrangements, you will be guided through the mixing of colour palettes, working on both canvas and board and using different tools such as brushes and palette knife.

Inside Outside 28–30 Apr | Oils £235 Alice Mumford Looking through windows as a subject has long fascinated and challenged artists including Vermeer, Pierre Bonnard and Winifred Nicholson, who each found their own solutions. This course examines the particular challenge and excitement of playing with space. You will work towards a final large painting, increase your confidence in working with oils and learn to produce confident and bold compositions.

Simplicity and Form 01–02 May | Mixed Media

Artists such as Winifred Nicholson, Mary Fedden, Georgia O’Keefe and David Hockney will be our starting point for two days of exploring a lively still life. Time will be spent in the Hepworth Sculpture Garden and on Porthmeor Beach. You will produce a large amount of experimental drawings, monoprints and paintings ideal for future development.

Lyrical Landscape 02–04 Jun | Oils £235 Alice Mumford This adventure in drawing and painting will explore how to connect with the elements around you. You will learn how to take your oil painting out into the rugged and beautiful landscape of St Ives and develop your own intuitive approach. This is a lively fast paced course with much of the time spent outdoors. You will produce lots of quick dynamic studies in oils.

Porthmeor Artists Now Studio Perspectives 16–19 Jun | Mixed Media £295 Naomi Frears, Phil Medley, Iain Robertson, Sam Bassett Over four days, four artists working today in Porthmeor Studios will open up their studio practice to you. You will explore with each artist their approach to generating ideas, embracing the unexpected and moving ideas forward. The Maritime Artist 27–28 Jun | Water-based £155 Hilary Jean Gibson Develop your skills in drawing and waterbased illustration. You will use as inspiration the installation by international artist Mark Dion in the historic Porthmeor Studios. This impressive collection of objects and memorabilia from fishing and artistic heritage makes for a fascinating study.

Abstracting the Figure in Paint 30 Jun–03 Jul | Mixed Media £325 Gary Long + Marion Taylor Using oils, mixed media and drawing; you will work from the nude and clothed figure and explore the exciting relationship between abstraction and representation. The work of the Bay Area Figurative movement of the 1950s will be your starting point, moving between a recognizable subject and boldly coloured, abstract arrangements.

Turner’s Sea & Sky 07–09 Jul | Water-based £235 Hilary Jean Gibson JMW Turner, the pre-eminent painter of water, with his unique ability to represent the elemental power of the sea, will be the inspiration for this course. In particular, his rapidly made and highly expressive watercolours, sometimes referred to as colour ‘beginnings’. You will learn to create vibrant watercolour, denote the sky, sea and beach, and transform unadulterated colour into a boundless seascape.

Dreamscapes and Memories 08–11 Jul | Mixed Media £295 Kate Walters Learn to explore, express and develop internal visions through the creative process using a range of materials and techniques including painting and monoprinting. A vital part of this process is being fully present, alert, and in tune with one’s inner world, and developing awareness through breath work, group walking and dream studies.

Bonnard the Revolutionary 14–16 Jul | Oils £235 Alice Mumford Pierre Bonnard inspires our use of colour, light and composition on this course. Picasso accused him of being ‘a piddling little artist’ due to his fascination with the domestic over the grand. Bonnard went on to influence a whole generation of artists and changed the way the viewer interacts with the painting. You will produce lots of work on this course and come out energised and inspired.

The landscape of St Ives will be the starting point. The clothed figure will be drawn in the studio and outside, moving towards a representational painting using mixed media, gouache and oil. Learn to convey mood, drama or subtlety and create characters that engage curiosity and tell a story.

Abstracting Landscape 29 Jul–01 Aug | Mixed Media £295 Marion Taylor + Liz Luckwell The Penwith coastline will be the inspiration for this painting abstraction course. Time will be

spent out in the landscape exploring this wild coast while being introduced to varied techniques for collecting visual notes. Back in the studio you will translate these into expressive mixed media paintings with a focus on moving work towards abstraction.

Illustrating St Ives 04–06 Aug | Water-based £235 Gary Long Explore the architecture and landscape of St Ives using water-based media and drawing as ideal sketchbook tools. Students will explore a range of techniques to bring sketchbook work alive, capturing vivid visual notes that can be returned to later for developing work in the studio.

Our tutors have specially designed this course to share with you simple and dynamic approaches to painting, incorporating acrylics, oils, simple printmaking and drawing.

Paths to Abstraction 18–20 Aug | Mixed Media £235 Liz Hough Explore in depth ways of seeing abstraction in nature and the world around you. Demystify the process of abstraction using a mixed media approach, including collage and acrylic painting. You will move from observation to abstraction over the three days and leave with a tool bag of approaches to develop your own personal approach to abstraction.

Oil Painting in St Ives 25–27 Aug | Oil £235 Alice Mumford An ideal course to be guided through the practicalities and challenges of working with oils en plein air. Capture the renowned light and colour of St Ives and experience the iconic locations of the historic harbour, Porthmeor beach and the views to Godrevy Lighthouse. You will spend most of the time out and about and generate lots of quick and vibrant studies in oils.

Marking Time 26–28 Aug | Mixed Media £235 Liz Luckwell The St Ives modernist artist, Wilhelmina Barns Graham, is the starting point for this course, with her crisp drawings of rocks, landscapes and buildings. Using the immediate landscape around Porthmeor Beach, you will explore the movement between representation and ‘joyous invention’ that so characterised Wilhelmina’s work. Using drawing, monoprinting and mixed media painting techniques you will investigate how to create powerful and evocative responses to your environment.

COURSES IN ITALY St Ives School of Painting on holiday in Tuscany, Italy. We are delighted to offer our students the opportunity to work with our experienced tutors in the inspirational setting of the Verrocchio Art Centre, which is situated on the fortified walls of the charming hill-top village, Casole d’Elsa in Tuscany. We have formed a strong relationship with The Art Centre based on shared principles and a friendly, relaxed atmosphere for our students to work in. We will be following in the footsteps of many of the St. Ives modernists who visited this area of Italy and received huge inspiration from the stunning surroundings. These creative holidays include six days’ tuition, materials are provided and the studio is open for students to develop their work each day and evening. There are opportunities to visit San Gimignano and Siena and sociable evening meals on the terrace to discuss ideas with like minded people while enjoying the wonderful views and Italian food and wine. Painting the Tuscan Landscape 17–27 May £445 Gary Long This is a beautiful time of year to capture the spring-time Italian landscape as well as explore the ancient architecture of the town and the bustling life in markets and cafes. Students will have opportunities to explore these varied subjects incorporating the natural landscape with Italian life and architecture using drawing, gouache and oils.

The Spirit of Tuscany 24 Jun–5 Jul £460 (Includes trip to Siena) Liz Hough This inspirational course will get you truly immersed in the spirit of Tuscany, capturing the evocative Sienese colours and exploring the approaches artists have made to the same environment, ranging from the subtle tonality of Morandi to 14th century frescoes. There will be

tutored studio time to develop personal ideas from sketch books as well as drawing and using collage and acrylics to experiment and explore.

Personal Journeys in Tuscany 13–23 Sep £445 Liz Luckwell and Marion Taylor You will develop an experimental approach to looking, drawing and painting in the stunning surroundings of Casole d’Elsa on the FlorenceTuscan border. Embark on an individual artistic journey using a mixed media approach designed to open up your personal expression. The olive grove landscapes and 15th century city walls, doors, gateways and passageways that make up the townscape provide a rich supply of inspirational source material to work from.

Daniel is a master in ironic quirky sculptures using found objects. With a BA Hons in Fine Art he teaches our Constructing Landscape course and figure drawing classes.

Gary is a figurative painter, known for his landscape paintings, still life and figure studies. He lectured at Falmouth University for over ten years and exhibits widely across the UK and Worldwide.

Alice’s intimate light-filled interiors and observational paintings are regularly exhibited in London and Cornwall. She studied at Camberwell School of Art and her studio is in her rural family home in Cornwall.

Emma’s simplified paintings include animals, still life motifs and landscapes. She gained an MA in Painting at Chelsea College of Art and exhibits regularly at Cadogan Contemporary in London and Cornwall Contemporary in Penzance.

Hilary specialises in illustration, watercolour and print-making, showing work at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition and Mall Galleries. She studied at St Martins School of Art followed by a postgraduate teaching qualification.

Jesse’s paintings explore the subtlety of colour and touch using different forms of mark making such as pouring, burning and staining. He trained at the Royal Academy and is part of TAap artist collective, resident in Porthmeor studios this Spring.

Kate studied Education and Fine Art as a postgraduate at Brighton and Falmouth. Her interest in the subtle world led her to working with a shaman for several years and the significance of the feminine in all spiritual traditions resonates deeply within her work.

From plaster to wax, to metals and paint, Liz works with a range of media. She trained at Dartington College of Arts and exhibits widely in group and solo shows.

Jo is primarily a painter inspired by stories of people and places. He studied at Gray’s School of Art in Aberdeen and also gained a postgraduate teaching qualification. He spent most of his life in the Western Isles creating art and teaching.

Liz studied Fine Art at Manchester Polytechnic and the Royal Academy Schools. Her work takes inspiration from Cornwall’s charismatic scenery and she has won many awards, exhibiting widely throughout the UK.

Marion is based in the Porthmeor Studios and produces large abstract paintings that subtly hint at landscape. She exhibits widely in the UK and is a highly respected figure in West Cornwall’s art scene.

Our first life drawing class was established nearly 30 years ago. Today our tutored figure classes are ideal for those wanting to learn and improve, build a portfolio or for beginners who would like to just have a go.
