Johanna Senfter made a name for herself as a composer of symphonies and church music. She followed in the footsteps of her teacher, Max Reger, with whom she undertook postgraduate studies in Leipzig following the completion of her courses in composition, violin, piano and organ in Frankfurt. In 1910, she passed her final examination with honours and was additionally awarded the Arthur Nikisch Prize. She later initiated a new concert series in which she sometimes juxtaposed her own compositions with works by Johann Sebastian Bach, and composed a total of nine symphonies.
