Hallfríður Ólafsdóttir

Hallfríður Ólafsdóttir was principal flautist of the Iceland Symphony Orchestra for over twenty years and also performed with the ensemble as a soloist. She gained an international reputation for her books on a clever mouse and its encounters with classical music. Her works Maximus Musikus entdeckt die Musikschule and Maximus Musikus rettet das Ballett have been published by Schott alongside Maximus Musikus besucht das Orchester which remains a popular work for children’s concerts. The award-winning musician, composer and author died in ReykjavÍk at the age of only 56.

Hallfríður Ólafsdóttir war über zwanzig Jahre erste Flötistin des Isländischen Symphonieorchesters und trat mit ihm auch als Solistin auf. International bekannt wurden ihre Bücher von der schlauen Maus und ihren Begegnungen mit der klassischen Musik. Maximus Musikus entdeckt die Musikschule und Maximus Musikus rettet das Ballett sind ebenso bei Schott Music erschienen wie Maximus Musikus besucht das Orchester, das ein beliebtes Stück für Kinderkonzerte ist. Die vielfach ausgezeichnete Musikerin, Komponistin und Autorin verstarb mit nur 56 Jahren in ReykjavÍk.

Peter Eötvös: BBVA Award

Peter Eötvös has been honoured with a Frontiers of Knowledge Award in the Music and Opera category from the Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria (BBVA) Foundation. The awards have been presented annually since 2008 for eight different categories to recognise accomplishments in fields such as fundamental research, ecology and computer science. Each winner is endowed with the sum of € 400,000. Previous winners of the Music and Opera category include Pierre Boulez, Sofia Gubaidulina and most recently Arvo Pärt.

Peter Eötvös wurde mit dem 13. Frontiers of Knowledge Award der Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria (BBVA) in der Kategorie Musik und Oper ausgezeichnet. BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Awards werden seit 2008 jährlich in acht Kategorien für Verdienste in Bereichen wie Grundlagenforschung, Ökologie und Informatik verliehen und sind mit jeweils 400.000 € dotiert. Zu den bisherigen Preisträgern in der Kategorie Musik und Oper gehören Pierre Boulez, Sofia Gubaidulina und zuletzt Arvo Pärt.

Pēteris Vasks: European Church Music Prize

For many decades, spiritual works by Pēteris Vasks have enjoyed great popularity among choirs and church musicians across the world. The German city of Schwäbisch Gmünd has now honoured the Latvian composer by awarding him the Preis der Europäischen Kirchenmusik [European Church Music Prize] which the city has presented annually at the festival of the same name since 1999. Previous prize winners have included Sofia Gubaidulina, Arvo Pärt, Krzysztof Penderecki, Wolfgang Rihm and John Rutter.

Seit Jahrzehnten erfreuen sich die geistlichen Werke von Pēteris Vasks bei Chören und Kirchenmusikern auf der ganzen Welt großer Beliebtheit. Nun honoriert die Stadt Schwäbisch Gmünd den lettischen Komponisten mit dem Preis der Europäischen Kirchenmusik, den sie seit 1999 jährlich innerhalb des gleichnamigen Festivals verleiht. Zu den bisherigen Preisträgern zählen Sofia Gubaidulina, Arvo Pärt, Krzysztof Penderecki, Wolfgang Rihm und John Rutter.

Toshio Hosokawa: Goethe Medal

The Goethe Institute honours individuals who have distinguished themselves in the field of international artistic exchange with the Goethe Medal: ‘The unique tone of Hosokawa’s music has a transcendental effect, transforming the concert hall into a space of global encounters. While drawing on his own traditions, he also succeeds in blending specific cultural forms of listening to music into an extraordinary tonal work of art’, was the jury’s verdict. Previous prize winners include György Ligeti and Rolf Liebermann. We offer our congratulations!

Mit dem offiziellen Ehrenzeichen der Bundesrepublik Deutschland ehrt das Goethe-Institut Persönlichkeiten, die sich in besonderer Weise um den internationalen Kulturaustausch verdient gemacht haben: „Der besondere Klang von Hosokawas Musik transzendiert und macht den Konzertsaal zu einem Ort globaler Begegnung. Dabei gelingt ihm, unter Wahrung der eigenen Traditionen, kulturspezifische Hörweisen von Musik zu einem außergewöhnlichen Klangkunstwerk zu verbinden“, schreibt die Jury. Zu den vergangenen Preisträgern gehörten György Ligeti und Rolf Liebermann. Wir gratulieren!

Jörg Widmann: Würth Award

Jörg Widmann will be awarded the Würth Prize of Jeunesses Musicales Deutschland on 7 September. The honour will be given by Prof. Norbert Lammert, former President of the German Bundestag. The Jeunesses Musicales International is considered the largest musical and cultural youth organisation in the world and is active in over 50 countries. The universal musician will receive a further accolade with the presentation of the Music Prize of the City of Munich 2021: ‘Jörg Widmann [...] is one of the most versatile and exciting musical individuals of his generation and an ardent advocator of the international standing of Munich as a city of music’ was the jury’s verdict.

Am 7. September wird Jörg Widmann mit dem Würth-Preis der Jeunesses Musicales Deutschland geehrt. Der ehemalige Bundestagspräsident Prof. Dr. Norbert Lammert hält die Laudatio. Jeunesses Musicales International gilt als die größte musikalische Jugend- Kulturorganisation der Welt und ist in über 50 Ländern aktiv. Eine weitere Ehre wurde dem Universalmusiker mit dem Musikpreis der Landeshauptstadt München 2021 zuteil: „Jörg Widmann [...] gehört zu den vielseitigsten und aufregendsten Musikerpersönlichkeiten seiner Generation und steht wie kaum ein anderer für die Weltgeltung von München als Musikstadt“, so die Jury.

Xiaogang Ye: various appointments

The Chinese composer Xiaogang Ye has been appointed as the founding Dean of the School of Music at the Chinese University of Hong Kong in Shenzen. Ye has also been made the new artistic director of both the Suzhou Bay Grand Theatre and the Nine Trees Artistic Centre in Shanghai.

Der chinesische Komponist Xiaogang Ye wurde zum Gründungsdekan der School of Music an der Chinese University of Hong Kong in Shenzen ernannt. Darüber hinaus ist Ye der neue künstlerische Direktor des Suzhou Bay Grand Theatre und des Nine Trees Artistic Centre in Shanghai.
