HERRICK DISTRICT LIBRARY Opportunities for Giving 2012 - 2013
The gift of literacy in our community Our vision: To welcome all people to a lifelong journey of enrichment and an exploration of ideas.
Public libraries exist to bring a broad array of materials to enrich the lives of all who live in their communities, from those just discovering the joy of reading to those who turn to libraries to find answers to questions that have puzzled them for years. We try to have on hand what you will need or might enjoy before you even know that it will resonate with you. This work is rewarding for all of us‌ even if it has become harder as our revenues have fallen. We are grateful that there are those in our community who have contributed through the years to keep our resources stronger than they would be if we had only tax resources to depend upon. In fact there has never been a year in which individuals, non-profit organizations or businesses across the community have not provided gifts to the Library. Their gifts
have enriched the experience of using this Library for every one of us. The library staff has assembled a list of ideas that we recommend for your consideration as an opportunity to expand the wonder and service offered by your community library. Please know that no gift is too large or small to help with the services we provide. If you can imagine a more wonderful Herrick Library‌ please, help us create it. Sincerely,
Tom Genson, Director Herrick District Library
Books or DVDs for Children and Teens Each month, Herrick District Library patrons check out approximately 7500 books and DVDs for children and teens. Donations toward the library’s collection allow us to add the materials we need to keep up with that demand. Children’s library books are also used in a number of our programs. Programs
at the library include five ongoing story times in English and one in Spanish, as well as library events. Books are also used by Literacy Heroes, volunteers trained by library staff members to read individually with at-risk children in community locations like the Rock at Holland Rescue Mission.
SUGGESTED DONATION 3 and up - $25 USD
Sponsor a Great Decisions Program Great Decisions is America’s largest discussion program on world affairs, highlighting eight of the most thoughtprovoking foreign policy challenges facing Americans each year.

The Library partners with the World Affairs Council of Western Michigan to bring this Foreign Policy Association program series to life in Holland. Eight policy questions of national interest are chosen and discussed nationally and locally. From cyber-security to geopolitics, the current state of the world is explored in topics ripped from today’s headlines.
SUGGESTED DONATION - $400 USD -
A mix of renowned and local experts make our program unique and a perennial favorite in the community.
Provide Seating for Youth Services The main library renovated its teen space in 2011, creating a teen friendly place for youth to read, work and hang out. The Herman Miller tato series of brightly colored poof chairs has been
a popular feature for teens using the space. So popular, in fact, that we could use more of them!
SUGGESTED DONATION - $800 to $1300 USD -
A donation toward seating in youth services will help provide enough seats for youth visiting the library.

Help the Story Come to Life “Our kids really saw the story come to life meeting Llama Llama. Thanks!”

Storybook character visits are great opportunities to inspire children toward reading. Since character visits are offered in conjunction with story times featuring the character and other similar books, they expose children to the library’s print collection in a fun and interactive manner.
SUGGESTED DONATION - $200 USD -
eBooks, eAudio Books and Online Books The use of eBooks, eAudio Books and online books by Herrick District Library cardholders continues to rise exponentially. Last year 41,700 eBooks were checked out or downloaded through the Library. Reference staff at the “Ask Here desk answer approximately a dozen eReader related questions per day, and library programs explaining how to access eBooks on library devices are offered on a regular basis. With offerings for children and adults in formats compatible with multiple devices, a donation to the digital collection fund will help HDL continue to offer something for everyone.
SUGGESTED DONATION - $25 USD for an eBook -
114 eBooks are checked out or downloaded through Herrick District Library each day.

Express Books and DVDs for Adults Express books and DVDs allow patrons to access the same new releases featured in bookstores. The express collection is the most popular area of the adult collection. Due to the popularity of the express program, there are not always enough options available for patrons to choose
Each month, Herrick District Library circulates over 5500 DVDs 8
to adults, children and teens.
an item that is new to them and fits their interest. Donations toward the express book and DVD collection will make it easier to keep more materials on the express shelves for patrons.
Bring Information Into the Digital Age A significant portion of the library’s genealogy collection is available on microfilm, a medium that is difficult to use and to copy. It is also challenging for some Herrick District Library patrons to read. The addition of a digital microfilm scanner would allow patrons to obtain high quality images in electronic format.
A high quality digital scanner for microfilm would bring this data into the electronic age, with the ability to save and share scanned documents saved as pdf files. Sponsorship of a ScanPro 2000 digital scanner will help Herrick District Library enhance the genealogy resources, making them easier to find and share.
“I’ve built up a sense of how this place has grown, responded to challenges and emerged as a leading city in West Michigan. Without Herrick District Library’s collection, how could I find all these avenues to understanding?” - Sara Leeland
SUGGESTED DONATION - $11,500 USD -
Herrick District Library Endowment
“Every gift to the Library makes it possible to serve the community with excellence.” Cynthia Kleinheksel, President, Herrick District Library Board of Trustees
This Library’s Board of Trustees is fortunate to have received generous gifts from the Herrick Family Foundation to create an endowment in the years shortly after the Library opened. This endowment is dedicated to help maintain the building and augment the Library’s services to the community as the Trustees may determine. More recently, other families in the Holland community have established separate funds with the Holland Zeeland Community Foundation to support specific collections in the Library.
