2013-2014 annual report (July 1, 2013 - June 30, 2014)
On March 20, M.Div. student Elisha Young led the morning chapel service using a large painting she had created representing the hands of God. The painting remained on display in the Student Services office for the rest of the school year as a visual reminder of what had been given to God.
During the prayer time I asked us to face the tension that comes between things we know about God but don’t always feel in our heart due to certain circumstances or situations. I asked people to confess those situations by writing them on slips of paper and then to physically release them by getting up and pinning them to the hands. Symbolically, the painting represented the hands of God, so as we pinned, we gave unto Him. We wrote our confessions on scrap paper, paper that doesn’t seem to be good for anything but is still waiting to be used for something. We wrote with permanent marker—once written, it was not meant to be taken back. And last, we used push pins, something very sharp and meant to pierce the hands. —Elisha Young
In last year’s report I said, “If I had to use one word to describe the past year, I would say we were ‘waiting’— waiting to see what the Lord would do.” The needs were great: the healing of our colleague and brother in Christ, Dr. Todd Billings, the successful launch of a new M.Div. program, and finding just the right people to fill empty spots on the faculty. While that was an appropriate word for last year, this year’s word simply has to be “blessing”— blessing the Lord, for our waiting has turned to rejoicing!
A Word from the President Dr. Timothy Brown
Back then we were waiting to see how the Lord would answer our prayers for Todd Billings, a brilliant young teacher and theologian diagnosed with incurable cancer. And now we are blessing the Lord that, although still under treatment, Todd is in remission and back to a full teaching load at the seminary. Then we were waiting to see if we could successfully launch a new Master of Divinity degree program, and now it is sailing out of the harbor, followed by a new Master of Arts degree program. Both of these programs already have many genuinely gifted students in them. “Bless the Lord, oh my soul!” Then we knew we needed to fill huge shoes left behind by retiring faculty, and by the end of the academic year we had not only successfully incorporated five new faculty members into our school, but we had also hired two bright, gifted young theologians for the 2014-15 school year. They know their disciplines exceedingly well and have great hearts for Jesus and for their students. That is an unbeatable combination! And I simply have to say that one of the instruments the Lord has used to accomplish all of this is you—your generosity and soulful prayers. All of which is to say, “Bless the Lord, oh my soul!” Grace and peace,
Dr. Timothy Brown President and Henry Bast Professor of Preaching

On June 30, Jeanette Beagley-Koolhaas retired from her position as International Student Advisor. The seminary celebrated 25 years of Master of Theology program directors, shown L to R: George Hunsberger, Dawn Boelkins, Wendell Karsen, Jeanette Beagley-Koolhaas, and David Stubbs. The Master of Theology program invites post-graduate students from around the world to come to WTS to research specific topics within a cross-cultural context. They enrich our community and return to their home countries to minister in deeper ways.
THE REV. DR. DENNIS VOSKUIL’S
LAST LECTURE Dr. Dennis Voskuil Retires On April 29, 2014, the Rev. Dr. Dennis Voskuil gave his last lecture entitled, “Back to the Future: History, the Church and Post-Christian America,” to a room packed full of friends, family, colleagues, former and present students, staff, and hundreds of people whose lives he has touched. Although he presented sobering evidence that the church has lost credibility and influence in America, Dr. Voskuil remains extremely hopeful and confident about the future of Christianity in America, saying,“Christ will not abandon the church, the Gospel will continue to capture hearts and minds, and God is full of surprises!”
Dennis Voskuil
Dr. Carol Bechtel of WTS and Dr. Jeff Tyler of Hope College gave responses to his lecture. To watch the lecture and responses, go to www.vimeo.com/94535397. Generations of students at Hope College (1977-94) and at Western Theological Seminary (1994-2004) have been inspired by the teaching and genuine care of Dr. Voskuil.

RESPONSES
Prior to joining the Religion department at Hope College in 1977, Dennis served Trinity Reformed Church of Kalamazoo, MI for three years, and he also served as acting senior pastor at his home church, Third Reformed Church of Holland, MI from 1990-92. He chaired the Religion department at Hope College for many years and left in 1994 to take up the leadership mantle of Western Theological Seminary. He began his presidency with the vision of connecting strongly with church congregations. His pastoral presence released an enormous amount of creative energy for productive work, and the seminary thrived under his leadership. After handing over the reins to Dr. Timothy Brown in 2008, Dr. Voskuil returned to his first love—teaching—as the Marvin and Jerene DeWitt Professor of Church History for the six years that followed. He retired on June 30 and will continue to teach part-time as an adjunct professor.

Academics Every ten years we go through an accreditation process with the Association of Theological Schools. This process takes months, with preparations beginning about a year and a half prior to the visit by the accreditation team. Academic year 2013-14 was our year to go through this again, and I am happy to report to you that Western Theological Seminary passed with flying colors and is fully accredited for another ten years.
Update from the Vice President of Academic Affairs
Leanne Van Dyk
I am also very pleased to report that the academic year you helped to support was a big success. There were significant transitions: we began a new degree program, the Master of Arts; we continued to live into our new Master of Divinity curriculum that gives students greater choices of electives; and we experienced loss in the retirement of Dr. Dennis Voskuil and joy as we welcomed new faculty.
Let me say a word more about those faculty changes. Dennis Voskuil is so beloved by all of us—students, staff, and faculty alike—that it is hard to imagine our life without him. Fortunately, although he is retired, he will still teach now and then and remain connected with the community that he loves so much. The new faculty appointments have brought wonderful vitality and expertise to our seminary. We were delighted to welcome five new faculty this year! Dr. Ben Conner and Dr. Kristen Johnson are our new professors of discipleship. Dr. Theresa Latini is our professor of practical theology. Dr. Chuck DeGroat is our professor of pastoral care and counseling, and Dr. John Brogan is serving as the Dean of Formation for Ministry. All of these people are already valuable, committed, and engaged colleagues. And then, of course, our wonderful students are what make our work so joyful and meaningful. We are often amazed at the wisdom, thoughtful reflection, and deep commitment of our students. Our students are also smart, funny, and remarkably talented. We consider ourselves blessed to be a part of their formation for ministry. We are all aware that none of this would be possible without your faithful support. We want to express our sincere gratitude to you for joining us in this high calling. On behalf of the faculty, thank you for your faithful support.

Journey Center for Learning Journey Center for Learning creates learning communities that serve the church in three areas: Leadership, Preaching and Discipleship. This past year over 700 people were served through opportunities such as peer learning groups, online courses, retreats, and conferences. Leadership: Ridder Church Renewal (RCR) is designed for pastors and congregational leadership teams who seek personal and corporate transformation. We offer RCR in partnership with the Reformed Church in America and the Christian Reformed Church. Ridder is active in Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, New York, and Ontario, Canada. Soon we will expand into Iowa, South Dakota, Nebraska and Minnesota. The response has been amazing as we see leaders and congregations live into faithful and fruitful missional living demonstrated both personally and corporately. During 2013-2014, 65 churches involving 415 leaders took part in Ridder.
Update from the Director of Journey Center for Learning
Steve VanderMolen
In April we hosted the annual “Transition into Ministry Summit,” designed for seminary graduates of the last five years. These new leaders appreciated this year’s theme, “Hugging Porcupines: Learning to Navigate Situations with Prickly People.” This annual summit reflects the seminary’s commitment to support our graduates in ministry. Preaching: In the fall of 2013, WTS received a generous grant from Lilly Endowment, Inc., to expand our preaching initiatives. We hired the Rev. Lindsay Small to be the Associate Director for Bast Preaching Initiatives and began to shape networks of preaching peer groups among pastors, seminary students, and college students. These groups will kick off at the 2014 Bast Preaching Festival in November, featuring Rev. Eugene Peterson. Discipleship: Under the capable leadership of the Rev. Pam Bush, a variety of groups were formed under themes like: writing from faith, culturally aware discipleship, robust engagement with the sacraments, and spiritual fortitude in leadership. I am excited to observe the many ways Western Theological Seminary links with pastors and congregations, offering quality resources to assist in cultivating transformation in Christ, preparing those whom God has called to lead the church in mission. Thank you for your partnership with us!

Finance The financial structure of the seminary can be visualized as a three-legged stool. The first leg is tuition, the second is investment return, and the third is donor gifts. I am happy to report that the three legs were oak solid during the past year. The student headcount, which correlates with tuition income, was the highest in the school history; the seminary portfolio earned 16.9%; and Update from the Vice President contributions totaled $5.5 million. It was a great year. of Finance As helpful as the metaphor of a three-legged stool may be, it is not totally accurate. Contributions are at the core of Norman Donkersloot each leg. Students pay tuition with scholarships (from your generosity) as well as from their own resources and by taking out loans. These payments are bolstered by gifts from parents, grandparents, churches and friends. Endowments produce earnings, but they start as gifts. All three legs supporting the seminary are infused with generosity and shaped by grace. During the past year your generosity started or added to 47 endowments; it reduced seminary debt; it provided for new programming; and it paid utility bills and salaries. It also helped us cover the unexpected expense of dealing with a record-breaking 10 feet of snow during the winter! All this helped to keep our tuition rates affordable and, most of all, educated 275 students who will make vital contributions to the church. Thank you for your critical support. It is greatly appreciated.
Just how much does a hard winter cost? Between plowing, salting, snowblowing, shoveling, loading and trucking snow away, removing ice from roofs, and paying for added heating costs....about $75,000 was added to our expenses last year.

Advancement Western received $5,482,506 in gift income last year, marking the third consecutive year of seminary giving over $5 million. Every gift makes a difference. I was so moved a few months ago when a recent graduate in his first month of ministry received his first paycheck and gratefully sent a portion back to Western. Stories like that happen again and again, and one of the joys of my position is that I get to hear them. I wish I had time and space to tell them all. Please Update from the Vice President of know how thankful I am for you and your gifts to the seminary. Operations and Advancement
Jeff Munroe
We did receive several major gifts in the 2013-14 fiscal year that are significantly helping us advance the mission of the seminary.
Two of those gifts came in the forms of grants from Lilly Endowment, Inc., of Indianapolis, IN. Lilly Endowment, Inc., is a major funder of theological education across North America, and we gratefully received a $500,000 grant to help us improve the quality of preaching (see Steve VanderMolen’s report on page 6) and a $250,000 grant to help us combat the issue of student debt. The problem of student debt is widespread, and we are one of 67 seminaries to receive this grant. Many students enter seminary with large amounts of undergraduate debt and then add to that debt while at Western. Carla Capotosto leads our student debt initiative, and we’ve been researching existing student and recent graduate debt levels. We plan to implement programs in personal and congregational financial management along with financial counseling. This is a complicated problem without quick and easy solutions, but we’ve already seen progress. On a related note, this was a fantastic year for increasing the amount of aid we can offer students through grants and scholarships. Several new scholarships were established and significant gifts were added to existing scholarships. All told, over $900,000 was added to our scholarship funds during the 2013-14 fiscal year. Western was blessed to receive a $200,000 grant from the Arthur Vining Davis Foundations to expand Ridder Church Renewal. Ridder is simply remarkable, and, once again, I refer you to Steve VanderMolen’s report on page 6 for more information. I want to make special mention of Dana Daniels and the persistent work she did in helping the seminary secure this grant. We had applied to (and had been turned down by) the Arthur Vining Davis Foundations for 20 consecutive years before this grant was made. Dana’s stick-to-itiveness is admirable, and the congregations being blessed by Ridder Church Renewal are the happy recipients of her good work. Finally, we received another $500,000 toward funding the Gordon H. Girod Research Chair in Reformed Theology that is held by Dr. J. Todd Billings. His work is bearing fruit and he has several publications forthcoming. I am grateful to you for praying for us, for sending us your sons and daughters to train for ministry, and for your financial gifts that help support us.

Admissions Few people wrestle to define Jesus’ words “follow me” as much as prospective Western Theological Seminary students. They sense God’s call and long to know what it means for them. The decision to go to seminary isn’t made lightly; it is costly and life-defining. The ministry of Western’s Admissions Department is to creatively enter conversations and walk alongside those who are discerning what “follow me” means. Update from the Director of Admissions
Our ministry of vocational discernment and seminary enrollment has never been more challenging. According to the Auburn Center for the Study of Theological Education, enrollment in seminaries peaked in 2004-05 and has been declining each year since. These national trends seem bleak and many seminaries are struggling. However, this does not define reality at Western Theological Seminary.
Mark Poppen
Our enrollment has been increasing steadily while other seminaries have declined. Total enrollment in the 2013-14 academic year was 275 students, compared to 216 in 2004-05.

There are many reasons why WTS is doing well. Western’s creative initiative to launch Distance Learning degrees of exceptional quality has helped us thrive. There is a new surge of interest in our highly flexible Master of Arts degree from the staff of Young Life. Our partnership with City Church San Francisco is connecting church planters and city center leaders with theological education at Western. Emerging relationships with church leadership networks and parachurch ministries continue to support our enrollment.
This past year we began a national advertisement campaign, and each ad has the tagline, “Visit westernsem.edu and see for yourself why Western is thriving.” Although the task of increasing seminary enrollment has never been more challenging, “thriving” defines enrollment at Western Theological Seminary. Across the page you see the fruit of the admissions team’s labors, the men and women of the Class of 2014 who have heard and responded to God’s call. Their lives illustrate what Jesus meant by, “Follow me.” None has complete clarity, but all are committed to follow. They will herald Jesus’ invitation to those they serve for the rest of their lives. Western Theological Seminary has equipped them to be effective leaders. Jesus continues to say, to them and to us, “Come and follow me!”

Copyright 2007, John August Swanson Gift from the Class of 2014 The Class of 2014 wanted to give back to WTS in a tangible way. In appreciation of the way Hebrew is taught at Western, which incorporates imagery and dramatic enactment, they chose to purchase “Procession”by John August Swanson. In this beautiful serigraph, Swanson takes up a theme present throughout the Scriptures. He depicts all the people of the world coming together and approaching the throne of God. Isaiah sees such a procession of people coming to the temple in Jerusalem at the end of time, and his vision of this procession is part of the new Hebrew curriculum. Swanson’s serigraph will be used to help students image, embody, and interpret Isaiah’s vision.
