2012-2013 annual report (July 1, 2012 - June 30, 2013)
If I had to use one word to describe the past year, I would say we were “waiting”—waiting to see what the Lord would do. The needs were great: the healing of our colleague and brother in Christ, Dr. Todd Billings, the successful launch of a new M.Div. curriculum, the enfolding of our first cohort of students in our new WTS-Newbigin Distance Learning Master of Divinity program, and finding just the right people to fill empty spots on the faculty. We leaned on the promise of Isaiah that “those who wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength.”
A Word from the President Dr. Timothy Brown
I am happy to report that our prayers have been answered favorably on all accounts! Todd’s cancer is in remission, students are pursuing their specific interests through the flexibility of the new curriculum, the Newbigin cohort of students brought with them a whole new level of energy surrounding church plants and urban ministry, and by May we had four stellar candidates to recommend to the Board of Trustees for appointment to the faculty. As this was happening, we welcomed our largest incoming class ever. Their gifts for ministry are significant and their potential in the Lord seems almost limitless. I bless God for them all, and I pledge that my colleagues and I will do everything in our power to fulfill our mission to “prepare Christians called by God to lead the church in mission” and see that they receive the best training possible. The rhythms of the school year don’t change, and we rejoice in the graduation of another class of WTS students, pictured on pgs. 14-15. Hidden in their faces are the gifts of God for the emerging church, and they have all come to the kingdom “for such a time as this!” I need you to know that none of our teaching, mentoring, worship, counseling, challenging, and praying could have been accomplished without your prayers and generous support. I could not be more grateful, and the churches that our graduates will serve one day will soon join me in this gratitude. Thank you! Grace and peace,
Dr. Timothy Brown President and Henry Bast Professor of Preaching

BEFORE A Year of Prayer In many ways, the 2012-13 school year was one of prayer, rallying around one of our own as we asked for healing. The seminary community learned last September that our dear colleague and professor, Dr. J. Todd Billings, had Multiple Myeloma, a blood cancer with no known cure. By February he had gone through five regular rounds of chemotherapy and was at a critical stage of his treatment: the stem cell transplant. Facing the prospect of losing his own hair, he challenged the rest of the seminary to shave their heads with
him, as a donor was offering $100 per head to the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation. Fifteen brave ones accepted the challenge, including the president, four professors, one staff member, and eight students. Rev. Jon Brown, son of President Timothy Brown, took up his father’s challenge to fill an empty seat, putting the total to 16. Out in Kansas, Dr. Tom Billings, Todd’s father, also shaved his head in solidarity with his son. When all the hair had fallen to the floor, $3,335 had been raised for cancer research.

AFTER In March Todd was taken to the brink of death through high dose chemotherapy before receiving “a second chance at life” through stem cells previously harvested from his own body. He spent the next three months in quarantine, as he did not have a functioning immune system. We waited in anticipation to see what God would do.

Faculty Highlights 2012-13 Kyle Small, Associate Professor of Christian Leadership, served as Interim Director of Formation for Ministry during academic year 2012-13. (In June 2012, Matthew Floding, Dean of Students and Director of Formation for Ministry, left WTS to direct ministerial formation and field education at Duke Divinity School in Durham, NC.) Dr. Small led the Formation for Ministry team through the year, implementing the new formation curriculum in both residential and distance learning modes. Carol Bechtel, Professor of Old Testament, was involved in the special committee to produce a new hymnbook, Lift Up Your Hearts, and a new psalter, Psalms for All Seasons. Dr. Bechtel wrote several new texts that are included in these publications, which are produced by FaithAlive. J. Todd Billings, Gordon H. Girod Research Professor of Reformed Theology, and I. John Hesselink, Albertus C. Van Raalte Professor Emeritus of Systematic Theology, co-edited Calvin’s Theology and Its Reception: Disputes, Developments, and New Possibilities (Westminster John Knox Press). The book gives a unique approach to interpreting and using Calvin’s theology, both for the academy and the church. In December of 2012, George Brown, Jr. retired from his positions as Associate Dean, Director of the Master of Divinity Program, and the G.W. and Eddie Haworth Professor of Christian Education. Throughout 24 years teaching at WTS, Dr. Brown inspired students to develop a hunger for learning to sustain them as Christians and to nurture their continued growth as disciples of Jesus Christ. Beginning in January, Kyle Small stepped into the role of Associate Dean. The Master of Divinity Program is now led by Kyle Small and Academic Dean Leanne Van Dyk. James V. Brownson, James and Jean Cook Professor of New Testament, published Bible, Gender, Sexuality: Reframing the Church’s Debate on Same-Sex Relationships (Eerdmans, 2013) out of his desire to help the church come to a vision for human sexuality that is deeply grounded in Scripture. After seven years of service, George Hunsberger stepped down as Director of the Doctor of Ministry program. He continues his work as Professor of Missiology at Western. Kyle Small assumed the leadership of the D.Min. program and welcomed new and returning students at the D.Min. seminars in May.
The Board of Trustees appointed Chris Dorsey as Assistant Professor of Theology and Preaching effective July 1. Professor Dorsey came to the seminary in 2011 as a Faculty Fellow and was a visiting professor in 2012-13. After 28 years as Director of Beardslee Library, Paul Smith retired June 30, 2013. Rev. Smith also served as Associate Professor of Theological Bibliography. On his departure, he noted that his biggest challenge was charting a course through the sea of databases, websites, books and journals so that ultimately as students worked through the information they would truly hear God’s word speak to them at a deep level. Ann Nieuwkoop has been appointed Interim Director of Beardslee Library. Since becoming Associate Director in 2003, she has coordinated, implemented and supervised all aspects of the day-to-day operations of the library. Four new faculty members were approved by the Board of Trustees for permanent appointment, and one member was approved for a one year appointment, all effective July 1, 2013: Kristen Johnson - Dr. Johnson comes from the faculty of Hope College; she earned her Ph.D. in political theology at St. Andrew University in Scotland. She is now the Associate Professor of Theology and Christian Formation. Chuck DeGroat - Dr. DeGroat was on the pastoral staff of City Church San Francisco, headed the Counseling Center there, and co-founded the Newbigin House of Studies. He has a Ph.D. in Pastoral Care and Counseling and is Associate Professor of Pastoral Care and Counseling and Senior Fellow of Newbigin House of Studies. John Brogan - Dr. Brogan comes to us from Northwestern College in Orange City, IA, where he was Dean of Students. His Ph.D. is in New Testament. He is the new Dean of Formation for Ministry. Ben Conner - Dr. Conner earned his Ph.D. in missiology at Princeton Theological Seminary. He served as the Young Life Area Director in Williamsburg, VA. He is the Associate Professor of Christian Discipleship. Christopher Dorn - Dr. Dorn is a 1999 graduate of WTS and earned his Ph.D. from Marquette University. He is our Visiting Assistant Professor of Theology and Ethics. He most recently worked at the World Communion of Reformed Churches in Geneva, Switzerland.
Gordon H. Girod Research Chair in Reformed Theology
INAUGURATION
New Research Chair In 2012 the seminary received the first $500,000 of a $2 million commitment from the Dave and Carol Van Andel Foundation to establish the Gordon H. Girod Research Chair in Reformed Theology. Rev. Girod graduated from WTS in 1945 and was most notably the esteemed and beloved pastor of the Seventh Reformed Church in Grand Rapids, Michigan from 1958-1980.
J. Todd Billings
On April 17, 2013, Dr. J. Todd Billings was installed as the first Gordon H. Girod Research Professor of Reformed Theology. His inaugural address was entitled, “Rediscovering the catholicReformed Tradition for Today: A Biblical, Christ-Centered Vision for Church Renewal.” The inauguration was held at First Reformed Church in Holland, MI and included lecture responses by guest speakers Dr. James K.A. Smith, Professor of Philosophy at Calvin College, and Dr. Matthew Levering, Professor of Theology at the University of Dayton.
First Reformed Church, Holland, MI April 17, 2013
RESPONSES
Dr. Billings started teaching Reformed theology at Western Theological Seminary in 2005. His experience in Christian ministry includes community development in Uganda, teaching theology in Ethiopia, working on staff at a Boston area homeless shelter, and serving his local church in various leadership roles. He is an ordained minister in the Reformed Church in America. Dr. Billings has written several awardwinning books, is published widely in scholarly journals and periodicals, and has lectured in Europe, South Africa, and the United States. An endowed chair is very significant in the life of a school. In this particular case it provides the funds to ensure a future of faithful theological engagement in teaching, scholarship and scholarly publication. Dr. Billings is currently completing a book about providence and lament in light of his own journey with the blood cancer Multiple Myeloma. He is also in the midst of writing a book that explores how a renewed theology and practice of the Lord’s Supper can deepen our delight in the gospel.

Academics After a two year process of revision, a new curriculum for the Master of Divinity program was implemented in the fall of 2012. The “heartbeat” of the curriculum is its biblical, theological, Reformed, sacramental, formational, contextual and missional values. In addition, the members of the faculty are excited to offer more electives for students to pursue their deep interests. Update from the Vice President of
This past academic year was one of transition and preparation, as four long-serving professors left (two by retirement, two by way of other opportunities). Throughout the year we searched to fill several open faculty positions, and by May we were pleased to make recommendations Leanne Van Dyk to the Board of Trustees for four permanent appointments. We are also happy to report that Prof. Chris Dorsey, who came to us through the Faculty Fellows program in 2011, has been appointed as a regular member of the faculty. This brings our total faculty count to 22, and our professor/student ratio to 1:11. Academic Affairs
Responding to the need for a more flexible degree program, the faculty of Western Theological Seminary created our new Master of Arts degree. This program can be completed in two years with an equal combination of required courses and electives, allowing students to focus on what interests them most. We designed the M.A. to provide men and women with the resources for thoughtful and competent Christian leadership in a broad range of ministry settings. The Commission on Accrediting of the Association of Theological Schools has approved this Master of Arts program, and the first cohort of students began in August of 2013. Western Theological Seminary is becoming a much more diverse community in terms of race, age, gender, and geography. Our distance learning programs are reaching people all across the U.S.; now 45% of our student body is from outside Michigan. This contributes to a rich learning environment of God’s people called to be leaders for Christ’s church. On behalf of the faculty, thank you for your faithful support.

Journey Center for Learning Journey Center for Learning exists to create learning opportunities that serve the church in three broad categories: Leadership, Preaching, and Discipleship. Journey offers a wide variety of options annually in two primary formats, either through group process or by event. Ridder Church Renewal, Journey Groups and Theme Groups are built on the model that people learn best when they learn together, over time, in and out of their context, and as they share their learning with others.
Update from the Director of Journey Center for Learning
Ridder Church Renewal expanded over the past year and now serves four regions: Wisconsin, Ontario, New York and the Great Lakes. 67 congregations are involved in a two-year process, which includes five retreat experiences with pastors and leadership teams from each congregation.
Keith Derrick
Journey Groups of 5-8 pastors meet five times for three days over the course of two years. These groups often travel to meet with various resource people to help them dig deeper into their chosen topic. Last year we had Journey Groups focused on discipleship and social justice. Theme Groups meet monthly in one location over nine months. Last year Theme Groups met to learn more about the topics of hospitality and leadership. We also hosted various events during the year, including the seminary’s Transition into Ministry summit (involving recent graduates), the Bast Preaching Festival, the Youth Ministry conference (done in partnership with the RCA), several lectures, and the Cook event in Christianity and Literature. We also facilitated a week-long spiritual practices retreat in West Michigan and offered a retreat experience in Cincinnati, OH featuring noted biblical scholar and author, Walter Brueggemann.

Finance I recently attended meetings with representatives from seminaries from across North America. The stories I heard were the stories I often hear—it is a challenging time for seminaries. Student debt is rising dramatically, enrollments are declining, and denominational support is waning. Those thoughts produce anxiety for many in the seminary world. When I lay those thoughts next to our experience at Western Theological Seminary in 2012-2013, I feel a rush of gratitude for our growing student body, your faithful generosity, and a tepidly recovering economy. Growing enrollment meant tuition income rose during 2012-2013. Your giving was remarkable at over $5.2 million, and there was enough economic and market strength Update from the Vice President for our endowments to earn 13.1%. What a year! We know of Finance there are no guarantees for the future—as this report is being written the U.S. government is in shutdown and the financial markets are cautious. As always, the future remains uncertain. Norman Donkersloot But we give thanks to God for a great year in 2012-2013.

Your gifts are crucial—they keep the lights on, pay salaries, maintain facilities and keep tuition rates affordable. They also build endowments, offices and classrooms. As you can see in the pictures below, we were able to rework two spaces to accommodate faculty and staff that would join us in 2013-14. But your gifts do more than all that—they support a piece of God’s kingdom work that starts in Holland and touches the world. Thank you for being a steady partner.

Advancement Perhaps you know that I’m a baseball fan. One of my favorite baseball players was Billy Loes, the eccentric former Brooklyn Dodgers pitcher. Billy is famous for saying he lost a ground ball in the sun in the World Series and also for telling reporters he dropped a ball in his windup because he’d put too much spit on it. His most famous quote, though, was what he said when he was asked why he’d never won 20 games in a season, the hallmark of excellence for a big league pitcher. “My goodness,” he said. “If you do that once, you’re expected to do it every year.” Update from the Vice President of Advancement and Communications
Success can be a harder act to follow than failure. Billy Loes is the patron saint of those that want to set the bar low.
Jeff Munroe
Thankfully, that is not our reality. Through the grace of God and your faithfulness, Western Theological Seminary had another very successful year in 20122013. The other pages of this Annual Report tell about enrollment growth, new faculty and new degree programs, along with the expansion of our exciting Ridder and Newbigin initiatives. All of this consumes material resources, and the Advancement team at WTS works hard to secure the financial resources the seminary needs. By all measures we had a successful year raising money. Total giving to all seminary funds was over $5.4 million, following a year with giving over $5.3 million. These are the only “non-capital campaign” years in the seminary’s history when giving topped $5 million. We are so grateful for your generosity. We also are very aware that none of this takes place without the blessing of the Holy Spirit. Things happen that amaze us. A great illustration of this occurred last December when friends of the seminary took out a $2 million charitable gift annuity, the largest in our institution’s history. CGA’s are a “win-win,” providing income for both the donor and the seminary. They are a no-risk investment, providing greater returns than other guaranteed investments, and are especially attractive for retirees. (Interested in knowing more? Give me a call at the seminary.) There were several other significant gifts to the seminary last year. Highlights include gifts that funded expansion and renovation in our atrium and academic offices and gifts that allowed us to begin a new endowment in Christianity and literature in honor of our beloved late professor, Dr. James I. Cook. Another highlight was the work of the Class of 1963 to secure over $400,000 in bequest commitments to the Faculty Development Endowment Fund in celebration of the 50th anniversary of their graduation. The need for financial resources never wanes, and we have begun a strategic planning process that will culminate in launching a new capital campaign sometime in the next year. We are looking at the challenges caused by success and how to best use our space and facilities. Continued growth will also mean we need to grow our endowment funds and increase the number of student scholarships we have available. It’s been 13 years since the seminary has initiated a capital campaign. We’ll be in touch later to share our plans as they are finalized. Thank you for helping make 2012-2013 a great year for Western Theological Seminary.
