Scope Activities Blackpool 2013 July - September (including summer holiday) We arrange exciting activities for disabled children and young people – after school, at weekends and in the holidays. We are delighted to bring you lots of ideas of exciting activities for disabled children and young people to take part in. These activities are just a taste of what’s on offer. We continue to add new ones to our new and updated website all the time, so check them out. And if there’s something a child really enjoys and others will too or there’s an activity a child always wanted to try, but can’t find anywhere to do it, let us know. Booking Some activities will have limited places so it’s best to book as soon as possible. Places will be confirmed by the providers themselves and can be contacted directly. Full details are provided inside this programme. Support Adult supervision is provided on the activities. If dedicated one to one support is needed, a carer may be required to accompany the child. Join us for a wild day out at Blackpool Zoo! The Together Centre and Blackpool Carer’s Centre are having a day out at Blackpool Zoo and would like you to join us! There’s no charge - all you need to bring is your food for the picnic! Wednesday, 14th August, 10am—4pm We will meet at the entrance of the zoo at 10am. Once we are into the main zoo, you are free to visit the enclosures at your own leisure, by yourself or as part of a larger group. We will then all meet up at lunch time to eat our picnics. Blackpool Bears multi disability sports Take part in exciting activities such as cycling, boccia, new age curling, archery, dance, rebound therapy, climbing, athletics, table tennis, badminton and ‘wheels’ for all cycling. All activities are suitable for every child and it is encouraged for siblings and friends to attend and join in too. All sessions are supervised by trained and qualified coaches and volunteers that have all been CRB checked. Supported by Blackpool Council, the club encourages parent and carer participation and strives to achieve a warm, friendly and fun environment. The management committee includes parents and carers who meet regularly organising events and managing the regular weekly sessions as well as recruiting staff and volunteers. FUNPOD Foxes multi sports group A new two hour multi sports session with a mixture of activities that will enhance speed, agility, hand and eye coordination and fitness. FUNPOD aims to improve interaction and social skills with an emphasis to have lots of fun! Our qualified and experienced sports coaches focus on trying new activities with the children, which they enjoy and can learn to be part of a team, a player and a FUNPOD Fox member. The FA Tesco Skills Running for over five years this is a nationwide programme aimed at improving young players for the future. Over the years The FA Tesco Skills has developed players to go onto play for Morecombe FC, Blackburn Rovers FC and Blackpool FC. The weekly training and holiday sessions run alongside a child’s normal club training and will not be used to develop a new team. The focus of the training sessions is based around individual ball work and game understanding to help improve overall footballing ability. 8 Urban Dance Project (UDP) UDP specialises in teaching street and break dance to children of all ages and abilities. It also delivers community projects teaching dance in all styles. Safe play centre A small, friendly multisensory venue, designed specifically for disabled children and adults. The centre is hired out on a private, pre booked basis to families and organisations who wish to use the facilities. Children and young people are able to play and relax in a safe, secure and non-judgemental environment. There is interactive equipment, sensory room, soft play and the opportunity for participants to bring own food. Blackpool Circus School Activities are divided into two sections – beginners and advanced. The beginners start for one hour and have to qualify in six basic disciplines that include the diabolo, plate spinning, mini tightrope, poi, scarf juggling and flower sticks. They are then invited to join the two hour advanced class which includes the low wire, unicycles, globe balancing, stilt walking, ball, club and ring juggling, acrobatics. Further advanced tricks can be learnt with the diabolo and unicycle basketball alternating with unicycle hockey. Students attend to either have fun or develop their skills to a professional level. Some have gone onto tour with travelling circuses, work at the tower in Blackpool and some are even working in the USA. Fylde Sharks Disability Swimming Club One to one support is offered in the swimming pool to all children and abilities. There’s swimming lessons to build up water confidence, swimming strokes and techniques as well as developing communication which involves bringing interaction skills to the 30 minute session. Play is also a huge part of the swimming sessions and every swimming teacher is qualified and experienced. The families who attend the club are happy knowing that their child is safe whilst having fun. Cheetahs Cheetahs is a wheelchair sports club that has been set up specifically to bring together disabled and able bodied children to play a variety of sports (in sport wheelchairs) together on a level playing field. We run a weekly multi sports session, £1.00 per session, in Thornton, which allows disabled children to play sport, both competitively and for fun, with their friends and siblings. The Cheetahs provides free refreshments in an environment that allows parents and carers to have a break and gain support from other parents, safe in the knowledge that their children are having fun and exercise. The sessions are for all ages and cover a multitude of sports, however; we would like to offer a more specialist wheelchair basketball session, in addition to our Friday night multi sport session, to run on a different night of the week. Further to this we intend to set up a wheelchair basketball team to play competitively against other teams. SeeSaws SeeSaws is a stay and play session for children with disabilities or additional needs and their families. Children will participate in arts and crafts, sports, ICT, music and cooking. In warmer weather children will be encouraged to play outside in the secure area. The sessions are theme based and the resources available will reflect this. Parents and carers are encouraged to interact with the children. Parents gain support from other parents. The A Team Youth Club The A Team Youth Club is for young people with Autism aged 12-25 years. Blackpool Youth Service run the club and is supported by the Communication, Learning and Autism Service (CLAS). At the club you will have fun and make friends using games and activities provided. You will also participate in evening events with visits to the cinema, bowling etc. Previously there have been opportunities for the young people to attend weekly activity weekends away in the Lakes. There is an emphasis on teaching appropriate social communication and interaction skills. The GFS Platform The GFS (Girls Friendly Society) Platform meet each Friday and do a variety of activities, for example, drama, music, dance, crafts, games, discussions (with older girls), work towards competitions day that we attend in the diocese, meet other GFS girls at these events and also have weekend and holidays away. Beatz Meetz Beatz Meetz Community Drum Circle is a non-profit Community Music Group that meet once a week. Beatz gather as a group each Thursday and play all kinds of percussion instruments. The first hour is used learning a number of different rhythms – with the aim to perform them as a group in the summer. TramShed TramsShed offers fully inclusive workshops for children; young people and adults aged 4 years upwards, with a specific focus on individuals living with a disability, social/emotional need or from a disadvantaged background. Our workshops are open to EVERY individual and anyone who has an interest in performing arts is encouraged to apply. In our weekly workshops we cover drama, music, dance, physical theatre, lyric writing, devising and much more. We work towards two main performances each year and write all our own scripts and music around the members involved to ensure everyone is included. Our specialist team of Arts Practitioners ensure the workshops are exciting, fun and enjoyed by all who attend. The team are trained in BSL to Level 3 and have experience with Makaton and PECs. Offering fun, exciting and interactive activities that are child and young person led. These activities are aimed at individual ability levels of the children and young people, in a safe and secure environment. 18 Play Inclusion Project (PIP) The project offers children with significant or complex needs the opportunity to attend PIP Activity Club during the school holidays. Children and young people get the chance to participate in a number of exciting activities, interactive computers, gaming sessions, cooking, sensory light room, bubble tubes, vibrating bed, swing and music, arts and crafts and sensory garden. PIP provides a fun, interactive day inviting music, movement and sports teachers to engage the children. Solaris Centre The Solaris Centre offers the opportunity for groups to explore the habitats and wildlife within the grounds including pond dipping using our raised pond after the Whit half term holiday. We can also offer rockpool exploration on the beach all year round for groups. Events will be dependent on the tides and suitable clothing should be worn for the conditions. Inside the Solaris Centre we can offer groups an interactive tour and talk about sustainability, climate change, renewable energy, waste, pollution, natural resources and biodiversity. 21 Blackpool Carers’ Centre Blackpool Carers’ Centre is an independent, local charity and network partner of Carers Trust. We provide a range of services to support and enhance the lives of unpaid carers of all ages throughout Blackpool. A carer is someone, who without payment provides help and support to a parent, partner, child, relative, friend or neighbour, who could not manage without their help. This could be due to age, physical or mental illness, substance misuse or a disability. There are thousands of Carers in the area. Many juggle, work, school or other commitments along with their caring role, and most don’t think of themselves as carers, nor realise the range of services available to help them. Blackpool Carers centre provides emotional and practical support for, Adult Carers, Parent Carers, Young Adult Carers (aged 16-25) and Young Carers from the age of 5, including additional support from our specialist team for the whole family. Autism Friendly Film screenings We offer Autism Friendly Film screenings in partnership with Cineworld, ODEON and Vue Cinemas. Every month, each participating cinema shows a different film from a selection of new releases and classics including Pixar animations, Disney adventures and other fantastical adventures suitable for all age ranges.

What makes the screenings autism friendly?     

The lights will be on low The volume will be turned down There will be no trailers at the beginning of the film You'll be able to take your own food and drinks You'll be able to move around the cinema if you like**

**Guests are reminded not to run inside the cinema and children are to be supervised at all times.
