sport & P.E Sport & Physical Education- AS/A2

Exam Board: WJEC

Are you driven to find out how you can improve your performance in sport? Are you interested in how our bodies push themselves to their physical peak? Are you keen to understand what gives Olympic champions the psychological edge over their competitors? Are you intrigued by why nearly one billion people would watch a single sporting event?

Is Physical Education for you? You have achieved at least 5 GCSEs at grade C or above, including at least a grade C in English Language, a Science subject and P.E. if you studied it at GCSE. You want to further your knowledge and understanding of the importance of exercise and activity to a person’s physical, social and mental wellbeing. You want to develop your performance as a performer, coach and/or official.

You are already a regular player in a sports team outside of college. You need to be committed to your sport, willing to improve your own ability and explore how to analyse your performance. You have a passion for Sport and a good level of practical ability.

What will I learn? A2 Year

AS Year Component 1: Exploring Concepts in Physical Education

Course content for the A2 year is currently under review. This content will be available from February 2016, please check www.bsfc.ac.uk for further details.

You will learn about the lifestyle choices that we make and the effects that they can have on health and well-being. These concepts will be then developed to explore the energy systems, sports nutrition, training methods and adaptations as a result of them. You will then consider the impact that psychological factors can have on sporting performance and finally the role that acquisition of skill plays when developing athletes. For the assessment you will answer contextualised questions that include data response. Each question will assess a particular area of the specification. There will be a range of question types including multiple choice, short answers and extended answers.

Component 2: Improving Personal Performance in Physical Education This is the practical element where you will complete a personal performance in the role of player/performer or coach. You will evaluate your performance through the production of written analysis and produce a Personal Performance Profile, identifying, targeting and monitoring your own performance. This must be linked to your practical performance and to appropriate theoretical subject content.

You will have the opportunity to participate or represent College in a wide range of sports through the College’s extensive sports enrichment programme which will support the practical elements of the course. You will also be encouraged to develop further your application of the theoretical concepts learnt through awards such as the Community Sports Leaders Award. There are also a wide variety of trips and visits to take part in. Past students have visited the Chill Factore indoor ski and snow centre in Manchester, Glyndwr University in Wrexham and Chester University. The College has lots of exciting enrichment and C.V building opportunities including the chance to earn the Duke of Edinburgh’s Gold Award, learn a new skill, learn a language, join a club, take up or develop a sport or take on a new challenge. See the College Prospectus for further information about what is on offer.

Where does it lead?
