“Memory erases into music” –
Ocean Vuong
INTRODUCTION TO FILMMAKING FELLOWSHIP + LAB The filmmaking fellowship serves as a vessel, carving path ways for artist-filmmakers, and weaving the vivid tapestry of Leimert’s stories through the loom of experimentation and dialogue. Together we will embark on a journey to empathize and connect with the essence of filmmaking. So we ask, “How are we shaped by two horizons?”—helping develop our curiosity not for what we are seeing, but instead feeling, through all of our senses in cinema. Dub Cinema can be softly defined as a mesmerizing blend of cinematic artistry and dub-poetry, entwining to gether intricate illusions and poignant memories. Guided by your own Leimert inquiry, each storyteller will bring forth a profound Black cinematic manifesto response. In the end it will be displayed in a multi-channel installation and beyond. We invite each story to reflect and enter a deep con templation of Leimert Park’s profound influence. Through the creative fusion of experimental film, evocative sound scapes, captivating photography, dynamic animation, and historical archives, these films transport us to wayward time-lives, offering an anthological escape into the lim inal space between the past, present, and future worlds that Leimert embodies. Each film becomes a conduit for intergenerational storytelling, carrying a non-linear song fulness that reverberates across generations and fosters meaningful exchanges.
05
Ethos: — The films should be engaging and visually compelling in response to the theme. — The films should reference, and contribute to the past, present our future vision of Leimert. — The films should have a clear point of view and make a comment on an element or experience of the Leimert’s community. — The films should be visually impressive, and aim to make an emotional connection with the viewer and not shy away from difficult issues. — The films can be experimental and can develop their own nonlinear language outside of what we have learned about storytelling
The ultimate culmination is the installation “Dub Plat forms” which stands as a prototype, shouldering films as the inaugural satellite location broadcasting the works of each artist. Unfazed by the passage of time, this installation fearlessly reiterates our stories, time and (time) again. 06

Our upcoming filmmaking fellowship is an exciting journey of creative exploration and collaboration. We see this as a conversation– an opportunity to develop a unique visual language that may resonate with your existing work and spark entirely new ideas on how we make films together. Throughout the fellowship, we’ll delve into all three critical phases of filmmaking: pre-production, production, and post-production, in a series of three sessions. Each of these sessions serve as chapters in the development of your project, and we’ve designed them to fit in rhythm with the Deep Work Cycles. While we encourage everyone to attend these labs in person, we understand that life comes with complications. Rest assured, we’re flexible and can provide accommo dations via Zoom if any issues arise. Labs will take place at SCI-Arc while most of the filmmaking will take place in Leimert. During the labs, you’ll have access to SCI-Arc tools and support needed to bring your vision to life. We’re eager to witness your unique voice and perspective as you define what filmmaking means to you.
Please refer to the FAQ sheet for more questions about the Filmmaking labs. 08

DEEPWORK CYCLES Thabisile Griffin will facilitate a series of “Deep Work Cy cles,” an unbounded version of work study circles that instead prioritize non-linear learning and exploration. From January to March, we will meet three times, oscillating between, and in rhythm with both R&D sessions and film workshops. For the Work Cycles, an original booklet will be made and distributed as a reference reader, for each fellow to keep with them and use during our meet-ups and throughout the entire creative process. Reference booklets will function as a book of spells and incanta tions, intended for both catalyst and reminders of what has come, and what is possible. The book will be mostly textual with some visual components, including social and political histories of Los Angeles and 20th centu ry primary documents and photographs. Page excerpts will include work from Edwidge Danticat, Edward Said, Fred Moten, Kelly Lytle-Hernandez, Toni-Cade Bambara, Gwendolyn Brooks, and Jamaica Kincaid, along with other poets, intellectuals, historians and visual artists. Deep Work Cycles will be loosely organized into a temporal framing of past|present|future, in relationship to a filmic process of pre|during|and post production. Each session will involve reading, study, listening, and conjuring, and will include invited guests to co-facilitate. Our Deep Work Cycles will provide the necessary insistence that creative improvisation is only possible after deep work and deep study, preferably done collectively. It is guided by an ethos of gathering and study as fundamental to the creative process.

INSTALLATION BUILD Architect Mira Henry and Matthew Au are coordinating the design intervention in a public space in Leimert Park to hold space for social and cultural activation on the Peo ple’s Street plaza. Designed in collaboration with Arrey and Tré, bringing their in-sights as skaters and youth mentors to bear on a manner of structuring the urban platforms with a freestyle in-teractive spirit in mind. The versatile structures provide shade and a framework for technical installations to both literally and figuratively support the films, and the culture in the streets, where so much of Leimert’s cultural life thrives. The installation is best envisioned as both a plat form and a frame, serving as the canvas where the art will be projected and embraced within its structure. From a designer’s perspective, we conceive of this as a pli able system, one that gracefully accommodates mobility and transformation. Much like Erick Mack’s installation, this project embodies the qualities of a soft system that gracefully adapts to change. In alignment with Lorraine Grady’s vision, our aim is to create framed perspectives that capture the interplay of light, people, and shifting viewpoints throughout the day in Leimert. Drawing inspiration from other creative minds, such as Rodney McMillian’s sculptures and Minnesota Studio’s Dream The Combine in their construction for MoMA PS1, our current interests have been shaped by diverse refer ences in considering the possibilities of this installation. This creative endeavor will unfold during the fellowship. We warmly invite fellows to engage in this process if it complements your filmmaking journey, though there’s no obligation for all fellows to contribute to the construction. The primary focus remains on crafting the films for this unique installation. Artist Eric N. Absolutely, you’re welcome to use your own equipment, provided it can be formatted for the final delivery as specified in the film lab section. All resources listed within the packet are available for your use.
What benefits do Screening Artists have?
Screening Artists will have the opportunity to showcase their work during the final exhibition. Each submission will be reviewed by our team to ensure it aligns with the project’s goals.
What happens at the end of the fellowship? Will I still have access to SCI-Arc?
After November 2024, you can enter SCI-Arc during business hours. However, please note that access to amenities such as files, the computer lab, and the library will no longer be available after this date.
How experimental can we be, what other mediums can be used?
We encourage you to embrace a broad interpretation of the term “film,” considering this as an experimental space for storytelling by any means conceivable. We extend an open invitation to explore mediums that span photography, soundscapes, and even AI-generated animations. The overarching aim is to view the exhibition as a canvas for showcasing works that encompass the essence of the cinematic—defined by the fluidity of moving images, whether singular or in a sequence.
